Family adventures

Welcome

When was a kid my family holiday was usually a week in Devon in a caravan and while that may not be as exotic as our fantastic range of family adventures, it was just as magical and enriching as any holiday should be and sowed the seed of my passion for exploring the world.

didn’t know then that one day would have the privilege of offering families some of the most wonderful experiences in the world, and the chance to see our beautiful planet and the people who inhabit it through the eyes of our children.

Experiencing another country and culture with your children has to be one of the most joyful, and rewarding things life has to offer, for them and for you. Last year took my daughter on Explore’s Turkey Family Adventure, and it may well have been the best travel experience of our lives. My daughter still talks about it almost every day.

This year’s brochure is packed full of inspirational travel tips and tales, as well as our family-first range of exciting adventures. hope whichever one you choose to go on it is as happy and memorable as our trip to Turkey was.

Here’s to a healthy, happy and adventurous 2025 with you and yours.

Michael

What to expect from a family adventure

Ages and stages

Our family groups are as varied as the kids who join us; we very often have tweens and teens, with 11-16 probably being most common – old enough to understand “this is a different kind of holiday” and be wowed in a really positive way. We do also happily welcome 7–10-year-olds and can let you know the general ages of other children on a specific holiday you’re interested in. We’d always encourage you to consider your child’s maturity, adaptability and ability to enjoy the trip before you book.

Immersed in the subject

It’s a holiday first and foremost, of course, but it’s not without its educational benefits. These holidays can be classed under ‘horizon widening’. Want them to learn about climate change? Take them to a rainforest. Want to bring history to life? Walk among temples built thousands of years ago. Want them to understand human differences and similarities? Visit a totally different culture. There is nothing quite like the deep, immersive nature of a small-group adventure to open their eyes to the wider world.

Expert Tour Leaders

Our Tour Leaders are brilliant at what they do, and lovely people to boot. They’re very experienced and super-passionate about the country and culture. They know their way around, can handle the unexpected and will work hard all the way through the trip in order to make sure you and yours have the smoothest and most unforgettable of holidays.

WOW!

This could be a word you hear a lot. How else does someone with limited experience of the wider world respond to snorkelling in secluded coves, wandering through Roman ruins, canyoning down a gorge, eating with locals, searching for crocs, bustling through souks, hanging out in an oasis, staying on raft houses or ziplining through rainforests...? Maybe yours will use a different word, but it’ll mean the same thing – WOW!

School holiday planner

Pace your people

Our ‘Relaxed’ holidays have some chilled mornings and dedicated pool days; ‘Moderate’ trips have a little less down-time and ‘Full On’ trips have some early starts and longer days... you choose what works for your family. We mix where you stay, from family-friendly hotels to tree tents and from homestays to houseboats and can usually configure things so you’re all together (or not, if you’d prefer!).

Our world

Let us share some of the lovely news and shenanigans Explore have been up to in recent months...

We’re a Certified B CorpTM

We’ve had sustainable travel in our DNA since Explore first launched in 1981, so achieving B Corp Certification this year was a huge moment that we’re super proud of.

Explore’s tours have always had sustainability at their heart - we want to ensure that our small groups have minimal footprint and maximum positive impact on the places we visit. That’s why we choose small, locally owned and run businesses to support – from local partners and tour leaders, to hotels and restaurants. It’s why

our groups always meet and interact with locals on their holidays. It’s why we support charities and initiatives all over the world, and why we set up the Explore Foundation to bring our customers and the destinations and communities that we visit even closer. We’re committed to being a force for good in the industry, and are continually striving to make improvements on our trips, in our office, and in our operations. We want to protect our planet for families to enjoy for many generations to come.

Child prices extended to 16!

For 2025 and beyond, we’re delighted to be extending our child prices to all children aged 16 and under travelling on our Family Adventures. Our active tours are ideal for active kids and busy teens, and now you’ll benefit from child pricing for even longer. All our adult and child pricing can be found on each of our trip webpages.

NEW! Wildlife grading

We’ve graded our wildlife tours to make it easier to choose the holiday that’s right for your family. From chance encounters and memorable sightings to full immersion: look out for these new icons on trip pages.

While wildlife viewing isn’t the primary focus of these trips, you’ll enjoy chance encounters and memorable sightings as you engage in other activities.

Expect more frequent and planned opportunities to observe wildlife, and a balanced mix of wildlife experiences and other holiday activities.

These tours are entirely centred around wildlife viewing, with every aspect of your holiday designed to maximise wildlife encounters.

What’s trending?

Our wildlife holidays (particulary safaris) and trips in Asia are proving extra popular with our family customers this year. Meanwhile, in Europe, Albania has been our fastest-growing tour for 2024. Magic in every

Family time is precious, and never more so than when you’re on holiday without the worries of school or work. Explore’s range of European breaks, all a short flight away, and based in one or two centres for ease, will help you create memories to treasure, whether you are travelling as a single parent or as a multigenerational unit. Here are six great-value trips for once-in-a-lifetime European adventures.

Kekova Island kayaking

Our Family Turkey Coastal Active Adventure is all about making the most of the sea and rivers around Kas, a picturesque port on the Turkish Riviera, in the southwest of the country. Among the highlights are a kayak trip to uninhabited Kekova Island, which will take you over the remains of the Sunken City, destroyed by an earthquake 2,000 years ago; canoeing along the river to the ancient city of Xanthos –a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and a scenic walk in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. There’s also plenty of free time to enjoy the beach, hotel swimming pool, or to join optional trips to Myra and the Greek island of Kastellorizo.

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay

If you prefer somewhere closer to home, then ever-popular Portugal is always a good choice. The Family Active Portugal itinerary is packed with terrific things to do, including rafting on the River Minho, exploring Peneda Geres National Park on foot, and enjoying a wild swim in the natural rock pools there, plus a fascinating city tour of Port. The action-packed day at the Pena Adventure Park is a highlight for many, with its 1.5km zipwire, and thrilling alpine coaster. And then there’s a two-hour

surfing lesson at Praia de Ancora, which has some of the best surfing conditions in Europe.

River deep, mountain high

Another top contender for watersports lovers is our Pyrenees Multi-Activity Adventure in Spain. Your base for the 8-day holiday will be Sort, a charming mountain village with lots of excellent restaurants and cafés offering plenty of choice for everyone, no matter their budget. It’s a great place to spend your free time and to add more adventures to your itinerary. Your planned activities include a walk through Aigues Tortes National Park, which will take you past lakes and waterfalls en route to your viewpoint to admire the spectacular lakes and gorges below.

On other days, the itinerary will pick up tempo, with a rough and tumble whitewater rafting expedition on the Noguera River, kayaking in a different part of the same river while looking out for bearded vultures – a species that is close to extinction in Europe – and abseiling, jumping and sliding down the Estaron Canyonn near the Guingueta reservoir.

All aboard the paddle board

One for waterbabies the Family Dubrovnik and Croatian slands Adventure trip includes sea kayaking, cave swimming, cliff jumping and stand-up paddle-boarding, with plenty of free time for snorkelling and sightseeing.

Your base is the island of Lopud, from where you’ll set off to explore other islands by kayak, finding golden beaches and hidden grottos as you paddle, or stopping off to play beach games such as picigin – one of Croatia’s most popular sports. More fun is guaranteed on your full day’s stand up paddle boarding, whether you’ve done it before, or are a beginner. After an introductory lesson, you’ll set off on your board, gently paddling in the warm waters of the Adriatic. Add to this sightseeing tours of Dubrovnik, Sipan island –which you’ll be able to explore on bikes – and dinners at traditional restaurants, and you’ll have a family trip to remember for many years to come.

New horizons –discovering Albania

Caroline Phillips says she and her husband chose the Family Albania Adventure as a way of introducing her 13-year-old twins, Matthew and Emilia, to an emerging destination.

Albania is only now fully opening up to tourism, so we thought it would be a good time to go. The twins are now of an age where they are taking an interest in local culture, foods and traditions, and Albania was an ideal choice – it’s both similar to Greece and Italy and very different. And, always a bonus, more affordable.

Sleep in a tree

Active families will relish this thrilling Family Sicily Multi-Activity Adventure that includes sea kayaking in Isole Ciclopi Marine Park, climbing, snorkelling, hiking on Mount Etna, archery. After a gentle start to your holiday –exploring Palermo, a city with Greek, Roman and Byzantine influences, and making gnocchi and ravioli for your dinner – you will enjoy an action-packed day in Madonie Adventure Park, where you can try zip-wiring and archery. For the fearless, there is also the power fan experience, which involves jumping off high platforms – while attached to a safety harness, of course. The day ends above ground – in tents resting in trees.

As a balance to your forest adventures, there is a day at Etna Land water park. It has 14 slides for you to slip, slide and plummet down, and the largest wave pool in Europe.

The kids are sporty so we needed an activitypacked itinerary

Added to that, were all the activities. The kids are pretty sporty so we needed an activity-packed itinerary. We took a cable car up to Djati Adventure Park to do the high ropes obstacle course, we went whitewater rafting along the Vjosa River, took a dip in the natural Benja Thermal Pools, and wild swimming in rivers that are still pristine. We also took a rib boat trip to the uninhabited peninsula of Karaburan. We all found that fascinating, mainly because of its communist history, but also because it is not much known about – not even by Albanians.

I also have to mention our Tour Leader, Tedi. He was only in his twenties, and so related to all the kids on the trip brilliantly.

5 smart ways to

Travel with Teens

They may not be tricky toddlers anymore, but once your children hit the teenage years, travelling can feel as challenging to navigate. Good news! With a little expert planning, family adventures just got way more fun (for everyone)!

ASK FOR HELP

Organising a family holiday is hard work, right? Using travel experts that plan holidays and logistics based on family needs will relieve the stressit’s your holiday too! And it’s not just the pre-planning – Explore tour leaders will set the agenda daily while you are away, so you (and your teens) won’t have to think about a thing.

1 3 2 4

BE FLEXIBLE

One great thing about an Explore family trip is that there’s always down-time built into the schedule, with options to skip activities to do your own thing. So, if one day your teen just isn’t in the zone, that’s OK. Do nothing. Do something else. Your tour leader will have ideas, from hiring bikes to family-friendly beaches.

INVOLVE THEM

Your teenagers are old enough to have an opinion, so why not get them involved in the planning too? If they’re helping choose the trip, they’re investing in it, and are less likely to be grumpy later. Researching a destination they’ve seen in a movie, finding an activity they’ve watched on YouTube – it’s all good learning. Watch the pre-holiday excitement levels rise!

LOOK THROUGH THEIR EYES

Of course, they’ll want Wi-Fi. A teenfriendly place to stay, hopefully with a pool. Nothing overly fussy, no dress-code, that’s a given. But don’t under-estimate your teen when it comes to journey times. Rather than avoid time on the road, it can be a great way to reset. Quiet, cool, a break from the sun, time-out, and a chance to switch o . And watching a very di erent world go by is part of the experience.

BE IN THE MAGIC

Family time gets more precious as they grow, and holidays are where the magic happens. So, why not try some unexpected, shared experiences and be in the moment with them. Thai boxing? White water rafting? More than anything, make those once-in-a-lifetime memories. Then watch them plan your next adventure together.

Born and raised in Costa Rica, Juan Carlos Rodríguez takes enormous pride in introducing families from all over the world to the wonders of his homeland

Juan Carlos Rodríguez

Our local tour leaders are the key to unlocking the heart of a destination. Their expertise and passion enhance our guests’ experience, while their meticulous planning ensures that our holidaymakers have the stress-free, transformative break they hoped for

 How did you become a tour leader

The groups are small, which means I get to know everyone time

As often happens in life, it was luck that set me on this path some 30 years ago. I was in my 20s, and was planning a different career, when a friend asked me to help with some tours he was running. It was little more than showing guests around, but it opened my eyes to the possibility of working in tourism. Twenty or so years after that, I began working with Explore. It’s the best decision I ever made.

 ou must meet so many people. How do you keep the passion alive

That’s easy – I love people, I love my country, and I want to introduce one to the other. That moment when I see a guest’s eyes sparkle with excitement as they awaken to the beauty and miracle of nature –that is always so rewarding. For some of our families, coming to Costa Rica is a once-in-a-lifetime experience – it has to be the best it can be, and it is my job to make it so. Some people arrive wondering how the children will cope without 24-hour internet access, or what will happen if something goes wrong, so the first thing I do is reassure them. The groups are small, which means I get to know everyone and talk to them individually. They can tell me if there is anything they are worried about. I like to keep things flexible for families. If, for example, they decide something is not for them, then that is fine. I always have a Plan B.

What do you en oy most about your ob Again, it’s the people. I’m often asked if I ever tire of leading the same tour, and I say: never! It’s a different trip each time – the families are different, and even if I walk the same trail, or visit the same river, the truth is it is not the same. The weather, the light, the season will be different. Something will have grown or died or changed.

I also like to share my knowledge, and to impress on our visitors that we are merely custodians, that it is up to us and to future generations to protect our planet. My generation – I am 58 – did a lot of damage. Now it is up to the children who come on Explore’s trips to put things right. One little girl a few years ago was already in love with nature. She arrived knowing so much about Costa Rica, the plants, the wildlife. I could see that she and her parents made very precious memories on that trip. Five years later, they are still in touch with me.

 Do you have any favourite places

That is too big a question. I love nature, and Costa Rica is all nature, so it is difficult for me to isolate one aspect of something that is so so special. Instead I will say that many, many of the guests love their time in San Gerardo and the Trogono Lodge. If ever there was a place to find elves and fairies, that would be it.

If Juan has inspired you to visit Costa Rica, then you might like to consider our 14-day Costa Rica Rainforest and Wildlife Adventure that will take you to volcanoes, and into cloud forests, with the chance of meeting monkeys and sloths, and to hike for miles, or try white-water rafting.

Connecting with nature

Take a walk on the wild side

Sarah Humphrey and her husband Paul took their two children, Ella and Oliver – then aged 15 and 9 – on Explore’s Family Botswana and Zimbabwe Safari Adventure. A year later, the family is still talking about their adventure… and planning their next!

My husband Paul and had done a couple of safaris when it was just the two of us, and they’d made such an impression on us that we said we’d do another… one day. Then the children came along, and any plans for another big adventure gave way to o a ea a d a ca o e e a six-year age gap between Ella and Oliver, so e eeded o a e a o d e o o enjoy a more grown-up holiday, and last year, e e a e e e e e a We wanted to make it as easy for ourselves as possible so chose Explore. We wanted the ease of being picked up, and taken from one camp to the next, and to know that we would be in safe hands. Even though we wanted the c d e o ee e e e o a e c safari adventure, within reach almost of wild animals, we obviously needed the reassurance that we would be well looked a e a d a e e eca o o d e taken to ensure our safety. From the moment we started our trip we met our guide in Zimbabwe for a visit to Victoria Falls before ead o o o a a o e e e said goodbye to him, we felt able to enjoy our o da o o a o e o c of what to do, what to see, and so on.

Another priority, when Paul and were researching our trip, was the quality of the guides. We liked the fact that Explore worked with local people because we felt a a o d e a ce o a ec a o o e co e e e e a d e a o e c e a d ad o Many of the reviews we read commented on how knowledgeable the guides were, and o a e e e a co ca that knowledge. We certainly found that to be the case.

think what most surprised us was the number of animals we saw, and how close we were to them. When Paul and did our a a o o ea a o o lions were rare. We’d go out each day, and then our driver would receive a call from a colleague saying there was a lion in x oca o a d e d ace o e e a d e e e o e o e o e a o a o 30, as well as 50 elephants, several herds of a e e d o ed a o ca a o a a o e o a e c ocod e o zebras and hundreds of impalas and other antelope. It was magical, truly magical.

Our guide went through the safety procedure, telling us what to do in the event that an elephant charged. It brought it home to the children that these were wild animals, and how o a a o c o e e e rangers don’t carry guns in Botswana, which we were very glad about, and so we knew that all that stood between us and these huge creatures was our guide, his knowledge of how elephants behave when they are angered, and our own ability to o o c o

We came home having had the most enriching experience and feeling as if we’d been in a David Attenborough documentary.

I think the other thing that impressed us was that we were given the chance to stay in different accommodation and to travel around Botswana, which gave us a much wider range of experiences, and wildlife sightings. We stayed in a guesthouse, a houseboat on the Okavango Delta, and then in a tented camp. For those last few nights, we were right in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve, with just the tent’s canvas between us and the wilderness. The sounds at night! We were told to stay zipped into our tents, which of course we did, but we allowed our imaginations to run wild, and to think of all the animals that might be on the other side of where we slept. From there, we did game drives to see zebras, and to search for leopards and the more elusive wild dogs. We saw zebras but the leopard and dogs evaded us - but we had already seen so, so many animals and birds and learnt so much that that it didn’t matter. We still came home having had the most enriching experience, and feeling as if we’d been in a David Attenborough documentary.

Family tales from Thailand

For Laura Dewar and her family, the leap from Cornish camping holidays to Thai adventures was a big one. But finding plucky, resilient travel buddies in her two young daughters was an unexpected bonus.

Having backpacked round the world in my early 20s, and worked in the travel industry for two decades, adventure travel is part of my identity – and I was desperate to share it with my growing family.

When the stars aligned over Christmas – living on a building site and both sets of grandparents away travelling themselves, meaning a traditional family Christmas was off the cards – we jumped at the chance to book a proper adventure in the shape of Explore’s Family Thailand Active Jungle and Beach Adventure.

The self-questioning ramped up in the weeks between booking our trip and setting off. My daughters are used to their home comforts. They like their generic (often beige) dinners. They watch too much TV. How would they manage? Would any of us get any sleep? At 7 and 9, my children would be the youngest on our departure – what if they wrecked it for everyone else? Every question, every anxious thought: I had it.

Of course, I needn’t have worried. The girls breezed through the 12-hour flight and subsequent time difference like pro-nomads. Arriving into our Bangkok hotel at 6pm, we had time for a quick change before a welcome meeting with our fabulous leader for the fortnight, Nui, and being whisked off into the night-time bustle of Bangkok by tuk-tuk. Anxious internal monologue nowhere to be seen, I immediately relished in seeing the joy of exploration on the faces of my two young girls.

My children had never experienced a different time-zone, never stepped out into a warm sticky evening or even seen a city at night. Their faces radiated with it. On the very first dinner – a wonderfully traditional Thai meal on the banks of the Chao Phraya – they each buddied up with new friends and, buoyed by the vibrancy of the evening and the exciting new company, tried all manner of unfamiliar dishes.

Over the coming two weeks, I was awed and impressed time and time again by my children. They jumped off wooden rafts into the flowing River Kwai, carried their

own luggage on and off night trains, asked question after question of Nui about their surroundings – the youngest even tried locusts and mealworms at a Bangkok night market! They were curious and engaged little travellers, and they were great company.

We spent Christmas in the heart of the Thai jungle, in Khao Sok National Park, where we kayaked by day, spotting monkeys from the water, and took jungle walks by night. Food continued to be incredible throughout, from ubiquitous Pad Thai and prawn stir fries to delicious minced pork and mango sticky rice. Never did a meal disappoint. And it was fantastic value occasionally all four of us would eat for less than £10.

The Thai homestay gave us real insight into life for local families, and was a definite highlight. Once the children were in bed, we enjoyed sitting beneath a sky of fireflies with our hosts. Despite very little common language, we bonded over videos and memes and shared some of the (potent) local Thai whisky.

It was a big deal for us to take a trip like this, and it continues to loom large in our memories. I’ve never known my daughters to talk about a holiday so much, and for so long after our return, and - cheesy though it sounds - the wonderful experiences we had together will stay with us forever. I can’t wait for the next trip! explore.co.uk/FOT
