The “Queen City of the Trails” is the only city in the nation that ser ved as the lau nching point for the Santa Fe, Oregon and California Trails.

Come face to face with ancestors past and retrace the exact path of the Santa Fe, Oregon and California Trails through the swales carved by actual wagon trains. Hear the stories of the famous to the infamous, including Frank James and William Clark Quantrill. Experience pioneer justice in the 1859 Jail & Marshal’s Home Museum. BINGHAM-WAGGONER ESTATE:

Recognized today as one of the most significant historical sites in western Mis souri, the Bingham-Waggoner Estate pla yed a significant role in the histor y of the area and the people that lived in the region. Plotted in 1827 along the Santa Fe Trail, the Estate was home to colorful owners and legendary Americans.

It was also home to the Waggoner family, founders of Waggoner Gates Mill, from 1879 –1976. Extensively renovated in the 1890s, it contains many original furnishings and accessories. Gift shop located in the Carriage House. HARRY TRUMAN:

Truman’s parents gave him a mid dle name of “S” after they couldn’t agree on a middle name as a tribute to relatives wh ose names both started with the letter “S.” Off icially, the “S” is followed by a period: “Harry S. Truman.” That’s because Truman used a period wit h the letter “S” in his correspondenc e.

etrace the steps of America’s 33rd president, Harry Truman. The straight-talking boy from Independence returned home after serving in the White House and built his presidential library just a few blocks from his home. Stand where he stood and see one of the stops along his famous Whistle Stop tour. See his home just as it was during his time in Independence. Tour the square along his daily walking path or have an some ice cream at the location of his first job, Clinton’s Soda Fountain.

Truman Courtroom and Office, Brady Courtroom, Jackson County Museum of Art, City of Independence Visitor Experience Center, and Jackson County Historical Society Local History Center and Bookshop. The surrounding grounds feature statues of United States Presidents Harry S. Truman and Andrew Jackson. Other markers commemorate pioneers, the Civil War, and migration west—Santa Fe, California and Oregon Trails—that marked Independence Square as their starting point. Hours: Mon-Sat 8 a.m.– 5 p.m. Tours: Complimentary tours at 11 a.m. & 2 p.m.

TRUMAN DEPOT 600 S. Grand Ave. This was the final stop on Truman’s 1948 Whistlestop Campaign. After leaving the Presidency in January 1953, he was welcomed home here by 8,500 admirers. Today, the depot is an Amtrak stop.

Truman Library and Museum This was the final stop in Truma is the presidential library and resting place n’s 1948 Whistlestop Campaign and of Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President was where 8,500 admirers welcom of the United States (1945–1953). It ed was the first presidential library to be Truman when he returned hom e created under the provisions of the 1955 after leaving office. Presidential Libraries Act, and is one of thirteen presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. The Library was dedicated July 6, 1957, in a ceremony which included the Masonic Rites of Dedication and attendance by former President Herbert Hoover (then the only living former president other than President Truman), Chief Justice Earl Warren, and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Truman actively participated in the day-to-day operation of the Library, personally training museum docents and conducting impromptu “press conferences” for visiting school students. TRUMAN MEMORIAL BUILDING 416 W. Maple • 816.325.7843 In 1926, this facility was erected through the efforts of Harry Truman and other civic leaders as a tribute to those who died in WWI. Renovated and rededicated in 2002, it serves as a War Memorial and community center. Included are Veterans Hall and video program, meeting and banquet space, plus an auditorium and various historic displays. Two originally inscribed cornerstone markers displayed in the Visitors Center were found in 1929 during an excavation for the spot of a proposed temple.
