018 marks the 175th anniversary of the “Great Migration” of wagon trains on the Oregon Trail. In 1843 approximately 1,000 pioneers made the 2,170-mile journey to Oregon. Over the next 25 years, 400,000 people traveled west from Independence, Missouri, with dreams of a new life, gold and lush farmlands. In the mid 1800s, more than a quarter of a million people hea ded west to find their dreams in the “pr omised lands” of Mexico, California and the Ore gon Territory. The “Queen City of the Trails” is the only city in the nation that ser ved as the launching point for the Santa Fe, Oregon and California Trails.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO UNITED STATES PRESIDENT

etrace the steps of America’s 33rd president, Harry Truman. The straight-talking boy from Independence returned home after serving in the White House and built his presidential library just a few blocks from his home. Stand where he stood and see one of the stops along his famous Whistle Stop tour. See his home just as it was during his time in Independence. Tour the square along his daily walking path or have an some ice cream at the location of his first job, Clinton’s Soda Fountain.

Truman Courtroom and Office, Brady Courtroom, Jackson County Museum of Art, City of Independence Visitor Experience Center, and Jackson County Historical Society Local History Center and Bookshop. The surrounding grounds feature statues of United States Presidents Harry S. Truman and Andrew Jackson. Other markers commemorate pioneers, the Civil War, and migration west — Santa Fe, California and Oregon Trails — that marked Independence Square as their starting point. TRUMAN DEPOT 600 S. Grand Ave. This was the final stop on Truman’s 1948 Whistlestop Campaign. After leaving the Presidency in January 1953, he was welcomed home here by 8,500 admirers. Today, the depot is an Amtrak stop.

Truman, the 33rd President of the United States (1945–1953). It was the first presidential library to be created under the provisions of the 1955 Presidential Libraries Act, and is one of 13 presidential libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. The Library was dedicated July 6, 1957, in a ceremony which included the Masonic Rites of Dedication and attendance by former President Herbert Hoover (then the only living former president other than President Truman), Chief Justice Earl Warren, and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. TRUMAN MEMORIAL BUILDING 416 W. Maple • (816) 325.7843 In 1926, this facility was erected through the efforts of Harry Truman and other civic leaders as a tribute to those who died in World War I. Renovated and rededicated in 2002, it serves as a war memorial and community center. Two originally inscribed cornerstone markers displayed in the Visitors Center were found in 1929 during an excavation for the spot of a proposed temple. Early Hereford breeders Charles Gudgell and Thomas A. Simpson of Mis souri imported cattle, one of which was a bull named “Anxiety 4,” known as the father of Americ an Herefords.
