EDITOR’S LETTER

Top o’ the mornin to ya! The countdown is on to St. Patrick’s Day. I can almost taste the Guinness now. The one day of the year we are all a little Irish. Check out our fun article on all you need to know about St. Patrick’s Day. You will be prepared with a couple Irish jokes, some toasts, and a few fun facts about the day. Oh yeah, we’ve listed what is going on at two of our local Irish pubs that day too. In this issue of the Canaveral Explorer learn how Cape Canaveral is thinking outside the box to find unique ways to help our environment. They have implemented floating vegetative islands also known as beemats. See how they are using these to get rid of harmful pollutants from our stormwater areas. Make sure to check out what Mayor Bob Hoog has put together for this month’s issue. He is giving us a glimpse of what great events are coming up in Cape Canaveral to celebrate the 50th anniversary of man’s first steps on the moon. This celebration is so big the events will happen all spring and summer.

MAYOR’S

MESSAGE And now, as the world prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of mankind’s first steps on the Moon, the City of Cape Canaveral celebrates 50 years of the world knowing its name. So not surprisingly, the City of Cape Canaveral is taking this anniversary seriously — and because the legacy of man’s first steps on the Moon cannot be summed up in a single day’s event, the City has decided to celebrate this anniversary with a series of public art projects, Community events, youth activities and more, all counting down to that memorable morning in July. • Look for the celebration to kick off in April, with a free showing of First Man, the second film in the City’s Spring Movie in the Park Series at Canaveral City Park. • The festivities continue in May with a space-themed poster contest for the 20th annual Cape Canaveral Student Art Show. • In July, the City will unveil eight traffic control cabinets with designs created by artists commemorating The Space Between and the Moon landing anniversary. • The countdown continues with a special photo exhibit in the Community Artifacts Room of City Hall, showcasing that exciting era in the City’s history, scheduled to open July 15.

That’s just a glimpse of what the Summer of Space has in store for residents and visitors of Cape Canaveral. Stay tuned to the City of Cape Canaveral’s website and official social media pages for updates and join us as we celebrate our City’s unique vantage point in mankind’s journey to the Moon. The City will have a little something for space fans of all ages! For more information on City activities and the Summer of Space, contact the Culture and Leisure Services Department at (321) 8681226 or visit us online at www.cityofcapecanaveral.org/space. I’ll see you around the City!

COCOA BEACH VOLUNTEERS SHINE ACROSS THE DISTRICT

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: KARYLE GREEN, Ed.D. PRINCIPAL OF COCOA BACH JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL

Brevard Public Schools held its ABC Awards January 23 at the King

Center in Melbourne. The ABC Awards recognize the top teacher, employee and volunteers across all 85 schools in Brevard County. Imagine our delight when two Volunteers of the YEAR were announced who do their volunteer work on Minutemen Causeway!!! Logan Colangelo, CBHS Senior was Youth Volunteer of the Year and Tabitha Braddock, Roosevelt Elementary parent was Adult Volunteer of the Year. How exciting for the two schools on Minutemen!!

Logan is the president and inspiration of CBJHS Students in Action (SIA). Under his leadership the organization performs service activities, serving our students’ needs. With student and business donations, Logan lead a team to cook and deliver hot meals to over 30 families at Thanksgiving, and provided items for a school based food bank. He raised over $600 to bring Christmas to ten especially needy CBJHS students. He is especially adept at fundraising, and puts his running abilities to use to raise money for worthy causes that affect our students. He sought business sponsorships for races and donated the proceeds to the organization To Write Love on Her Arms, which supports students’ mental health. To keep

students safe, he ran several races in a Leprechaun suit to advertise CBHS Project Graduation, which keeps graduates entertained and off the roads on Graduation Night. Logan does all of these things for others while pursuing an International Baccalaureate diploma. Tabitha Braddock is an outstandLogan Colangelo, CBHS Youth Volunteer of the Year ing wife, friend, mentor, mom and leader at Roosevelt Elementary School. People are willing to follow her and to willingly volunteer for her because of who she is. Tabitha started as a room mom when she moved to Cocoa Beach in 2014. She actively volunteers her time to our school with a smile on her face. Mrs. Braddock was elected as PTO President last year and is really working to change the culture of volunteerism in the school by making it a positive climate and more inclusive. Because of this, Roosevelt has seen an increase in volunteer parents and hours. She never states “I” but always puts her team to the forefront and thanks everyone down to the smallest of participation. Tabitha Braddock, Tabitha has actively gotten our community Adult Volunteer involved with the school and continues to of the Year do so. Tabitha works full time but continues to be in our school every day. Between school and home, she volunteers on average 25 hours per week. While not in our school, she runs the PTO website and is actively marketing our school door to door to the community for donations and involvement. She was highly involved in having a new community playground built at our school that had been in the making for four years, for which the ribbon was cut this fall. Way to go Logan and Tabitha!!

BEEMATS? Beemats?: A unique way to clean water in The Space Between®. CONTRIBUTING WRITERS: ZACHARY EICHHOLZ, ASSISTANT TO THE COMMUNITY SERVICES DIRECTOR AND BRENDA DEFOE-SURPRENANT, CITY PLANNER

The City of Cape Canaveral aims to be sustainable, and in an

effort to set an example for coastal municipalities in Florida and across the nation, the City has routinely taking action to be more ecologically friendly. As part of a greater effort to better manage the City of Cape Canaveral’s unique challenges with being a barrier island and the affect this has on the Banana River Lagoon (and the Indian River Lagoon system), the City is committed to reducing stormwater impacts while improving overall water quality. Through a series of low impact development (LID) initiatives, the City strives to simultaneously conserve green space and manage stormwater. One such example can be seen at Manatee Sanctuary Park (701 Thurm Boulevard). Floating Vegetative Islands (FVIs),

10

also known as Beemats are an innovative biological system that utilizes aquatic plants to help remove nitrogen, phosphorus, and other chemical pollutants from stormwater areas. Plants are held inside small plastic pods set within a buoyant foam mat, where the roots of each plant accumulate and store nutrients until they are harvested. These plants are then either composted or planted to revegetate local wildernesses. The City of Cape Canaveral currently as four, two at Manatee Sanctuary Park and two at its wastewater treatment plant. Visit www.cityofcapecanaveral.org/sustainability to learn more about the City’s environmental initiatives.

FUN FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK’S DAY Why 17 March? Simple – the date marks the saint’s death in 461 at Saul, Downpatrick, United Kingdom. It was here that he had established his first church. Made the patron saint of Ireland, legends state he baptized hundreds of people on a single day, and he used a three-leaf clover– the famous shamrock–to describe the Holy Trinity.

would make St. Augustine the site of the world’s oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade. The first parade to be held in Ireland wasn’t until 1903.

When was the first parade? Boston and New York have long laid claim to be the locations of the first St. Patrick’s Day parades in 1737 and 1762 respectively. However, recent research unearthed in St. Augustine, Florida, describes a St. Patrick’s Day celebration in 1600 and a St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1601 (Mulraney, 2018). This 12

Why do people wear green? Early depictions of St. Patrick show him wearing blue. The official color, St. Patrick’s Blue, is a light almost sky blue. St. Patrick’s blue even has historical significance. When King George III created the Order of St. Patrick, a British order of chivalry associated with Ireland, he made “St. Patrick’s blue” the official color of the Order. The use of green on St. Patrick’s Day didn’t start until 1798 during the Irish Rebellion. As the divide between Ireland and the English grew, the color green and the clover, St. Patrick’s shamrock, became a symbol of nationalism for the Irish.
