EDITOR’S LETTER appy new year! We want to wish each of our readers a healthy, happy and prosperous 2020. Take a moment just to focus on your plans for the new year. Set some new goals for yourself, or maybe just revisit some goals from 2019 that might have fallen by the wayside. Let’s all make today better than yesterday.

During Winterfest, we dropped by a Cocoa Beach business which had previously advertised with us only to find out by the time you are reading this letter they will be out of business. Without all of us supporting small local businesses, they just can’t compete with the online retail giants. These advertisers are your neighbors, friends or even relatives, so let’s get out there and support them— shop and dine locally. Please take a moment and look through our advertisers and continue to patronize their businesses. It is their support which makes this local magazine possible. Our challenge to you, and to ourselves, for 2020 is to find an advertiser in the magazine which you might not have visited in a while or maybe never visited or used their services and make a point to reach out to them. Go to a local restaurant for dinner, shop at a local retail establishment instead of online, or book a household service. We all get in a rut and continue going to the same locations or doing the same things because it is comfortable and easy, but for 2020 let’s get out of the rut and try something different! We are always looking for local content for our magazine. Do you have a story idea? Do you know someone (or yourself) with an amazing experience that needs to be shared? Maybe your organization has an upcoming event or fundraiser that your neighbors might be interested in hearing more about. Reach out to us; we’d love to hear from you. Email us at info@explorermultimedia.com or call 321-759-6064. Have a wonderful start to this new year. Get out there and make 2020 your best year yet!

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

SATELLITE BEACH UPDATE FROM MAYOR CATINO

SATELLITE BEACH ENERGY PERFORMANCE INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Mayor Frank Catino

Our aging City of Satellite Beach infrastructure needed vital upgrades to several facilities that included roofs and HVAC equipment that had exceeded its useful lifespan. The City Council was challenged to decrease energy and operational costs to address financial challenges and retain our sustainability goals. The Council entered into a contract with ABM Building Services, LLC to assist in developing a customized financial and energy efficient program to make the much-needed infrastructure improvements at five city facilities and three parks. The program developed a financial plan to use the energy savings to offset the cost of the upgrades. The program included ongoing predictive and preventive maintenance for new and existing lighting and HVAC equipment at Satellite Beach City Hall, Civic Center, Police Department, Fire Department, Community Center and Pelican Beach Clubhouse. The program also included new roofs at several facilities. “This program is providing the City with an efficient way to upgrade and maintain the City facilities while saving us the time and money by streamlining the procurement process. The City will benefit from a reduction in future energy and operational costs that will be provided as a result of implementing the program, ” said Mayor Catino. ABM helped our City improve and upgrade city facilities while creating energy and operations savings. Other benefits included: •

• •

• • •

Retrofitted lighting systems to energy efficient LED lighting and replaced or retrofitted HVAC units which will be controlled by state-of-the-art control systems to maximize energy and operational efficiency at several facilities. Installed building automation controls allowing maintenance staff to remotely monitor and quickly address maintenance needs. Installing solar powered and battery powered LED lighting around pathways and the stormwater pond at DeSoto Park, the city’s newest park (install to be completed in January 2020). Installed new roofs and reattached rooftop HVAC equipment at three facilities to comply with hurricane safety standards. Improved ventilation and outside air intake systems at several facilities by sealing building envelopes to increase occupant comfort and control humidity. Upgrade communication lines to provide more reliable telephone systems and internet services at five facilities.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year!

TIME FOR SOME NEW YEAR’S FINANCIAL RESOLUTIONS

Have you thought about your New Year’s resolutions for 2020?

When many of us make these promises, we focus on ways we can improve some form of our health. We vow to get more physically healthy by going to the gym, or we promise to improve our mental health by learning a new language or instrument. But it’s also important to think about our financial health – so it’s a good idea to develop some appropriate resolutions for this area, too. What kinds of financial resolutions might you make? Here are a few suggestions: Increase your retirement plan contributions. One of the best financial moves you can make is to take full advantage of your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you contribute pre-tax dollars to your plan, the more you put in, the lower your taxable income will be for the year, and your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. So, if your salary goes up in 2020, increase the amount you put into to your plan. Most people don’t come close to reaching the annual contribution limit, which, in 2019, was $19,000, or $25,000 for those 50 or older. You might not reach these levels, either, but it’s certainly worthwhile to invest as much as you can possibly afford. Use “found” money wisely. During the course of the next year, you may well receive some money outside your normal paychecks, such as a bonus or a tax refund. It can be tempting to spend this money, but you may help yourself in the long run by investing it. You could use it to help fund your IRA for the year or to fill a gap in another investment account. Don’t overreact to market downturns. You’ve probably heard stories about people who lamented not getting in “on the ground floor” of what is now a mega-company. But a far more common investment mistake is overreacting to temporary market downturns by selling investments at the wrong time (when their prices are down) and staying out of the market until things calm down (and possibly missing the next rally). The financial markets always fluctuate, but if you can resolve to stay invested and follow a consistent, long-term strategy, you can avoid making some costly errors.

8 | S AT EL L IT E BE ACH E X PLORER

Be financially prepared for the unexpected. Even if you’re diligent about saving and investing for your long-term goals, you can encounter obstacles along the way. And one of these roadblocks could come in the form of large, unexpected expenses, such as the sudden need for a new car or some costly medical bills. If you aren’t prepared for these costs, you might have to dip in to your long-term investments to pay for them. To prevent this from happening, you may want to keep sufficient cash, or cash equivalents, in your investment accounts. Or you might want to maintain a completely separate account as an emergency fund, with the money kept in low-risk, liquid vehicles. If possible, try to maintain at least six months’ worth of living expenses in this account. It will take some effort but following these resolutions could help you move closer to your financial goals in 2020 – and beyond. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Antioxidants Fight Against Cancer CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Susie Bond, RDN, LDN Health First Pro-Health & Fitness Center

Antioxidants are often called “the bodyguards of health.” They earned this distinction because they protect our cells from destruction by free radicals. Free radicals are highly-charged, oxidized particles that enter our cells, causing damage. This results in a greater risk of developing cancer, cataracts, a suppressed immune system, premature aging, heart disease and stroke. Oxidation is what happens to metal when it rusts. The metal reacts with the oxygen in the air which causes the metal to decompose and deteriorate. When you slice an apple it turns brown. It reacts with the oxygen in the air causing it to oxidize and decompose. The same type of thing happens in our cells when they become oxidized due to free radicals. Our bodies have a built-in defense system against free radicals, but like anything else, there’s a limit to how much they can handle. Excess exposure to free radicals overloads our bodies’ natural defense system, and leads to damage and disease. So, where do free radicals come from? Typically they come from chronic inflammation, ozone, industrial chemicals, excessive ultraviolet light, radiation, cigarette smoke, and air pollution.

Antioxidants neutralize or inactivate free radicals, rendering them harmless. We get antioxidants in our diet primarily from fruits and vegetables. There are thousands of different antioxidants that have been identified by scientists. Interestingly, it’s the specific antioxidants in fruits and vegetables that gives them their characteristic colors. For example, the antioxidant beta-carotene gives carrots, cantaloupe, and pumpkin their orange color. Lycopene provides the red that we see in cherries, watermelon, and tomatoes. Anthocyanins are blue-purple, and are found in eggplant, blueberries, and plums. All antioxidants are generally cancer-protective. However, each one has a specific function and tends to target different parts of the body.

WE ASK OFFICIALS, STAFF AND PUBLIC TO RATE

ETHICS & COMMUNICATION Political Harmony Consulting 866.489.2879 www.politicalharmony.us

Therefore, to get broad protection, you’ll want to consume a variety of colors of fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. Hence, “eat the rainbow” every day! The bottom-line best advice is to get your antioxidants from their original source – that is, real food, rather than supplements. The antioxidants in food work synergistically with other compounds in food to provide the best protection. So, that apple you sliced? If you want to prevent it from oxidizing or turning brown, you can dip the slices in lemon juice. That works to protect the apple because of something in lemon juice that functions as an antioxidant. That “something” is vitamin C!

FROM THE DESK OF PRINCIPAL PRUETT

Satellite High School has had a great first semester. Our students have excelled in the classroom, on stage, and in athletics….to include the first men’s cross country state championship in school history!!! The number of students enrolled in advanced courses and extra-curricular activities has increased tremendously this semester. These courses and activities create life-long memories and open up so many new and exciting opportunities for our students after graduation. As we move into the second semester, students will have the opportunity to hear from their peers and Satellite graduates on what to expect as they move through the end of the school year and what to prepare for going into next year…the next grade for our ninth through eleventh graders and college for our current seniors. In addition, we have several events planned for current eighth graders to come to SHS to hear about all the great opportunities here for them next year. We are looking forward to a great second semester. If you haven’t had a chance to come out and see our students in action, please plan to do so starting in January. Our staff and students greatly appreciate the community support and love seeing you at their events. Happy New Year!!! Sting ‘Em Scorps!!! Bobby Pruett Principal Satellite High School
