EDITOR’S LETTER We are definitely in the dog days of summer! We are in the 90s every day…and I love it. This is where Tracee and I differ. I love this hot weather and enjoy spending time in the pool (it’s like bath water!); Tracee is counting down the days till we start getting some “fall-like” weather. Don’t get me wrong, I love a cool evening as much as the next person, but I truly don’t mind this hot weather. I do LOVE that football season is back! Soon, every Saturday and Sunday your TV will be filled with college and NFL football games!! Tracee and I have already picked up a few tickets to go catch some great college football live…nothing else like seeing it live! Speaking of watching football live, make sure to catch some Friday night football right here in Cocoa Beach!! We wish Coach Lowe and our local football warriors well this season. Go BEACH!!

MALIK’S
FROM THE MAYOR
MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
written by Mayor Ben Malik
City of Cocoa Beach, The year is flying by; September is here and the last summer beach crowds on Labor Day (looking forward to quieter times and those long-period fall swells from distant storms may they stay far away and just send us some surf, it has been an abysmal summer!). The downtown parking garage had a bit of a delay due to an updated soil test that found soft clay 40 feet below the proposed surface. The garage will require 95 or so pilings to be placed into the ground to support the weight of a 3-story parking structure. Kudos to Commissioner Mike Miller (retired architect) who has been involved in this project to lend his expertise to ensure this was addressed. The project is expected to break ground in October of 2018. Thank you to the Space Coast Tourism Development Council for supporting a $90,000 funding to cover the restrooms and showers on the first floor of the parking structure for use by residents and visitors! Soon, Kelly, you will have not to circle round and round downtown looking for non-parallel parking spaces (my wife, Kelly, has some issues with parallel parking...I am so dead!). Election season is around the corner (as so is Christmas just in case you were wondering — 115 days from September 1st!), and I am disappointed with the onslaught of attack ads and misleading sound bites. If you wish to run for office, tell us what you believe in and why you think you are the best candidate for the job! My father taught me to always do my own research on topics and consult a variety of sources: Reuters, BBC, CBS, ABC, Washington Post, Daily Telegraph, etc. He is a retired journalist of another
era, when journalists asked the tough questions and did real investigative pieces (remember the old 60 Minutes shows when the reporters would make their interview subjects squirm and shun away from the cameras). Given the decline of newspaper readers and generally short attention spans, it seems there is little interest in lengthy investigative articles/periodicals. Get informed and then vote! Take our lagoon issue, it is easy to do the blame game when the situation took decades to occur. It will take both State of Florida and Federal Government assets to fund the infrastructure and drainage lands needed to fix this mess. Ask the current elected officials and candidates for State and Federal office if they will support allocating the estimated $1 billion funding for this. Tactics like calling a state of emergency or playing the shell game with $1 million of tourism taxes isn’t going the solve the problem. Ask if any of those running or elected will sponsor any type of campaign finance reform bills ($1,000 limit for Federal, no more Citizens United/PACs, etc., $500 for State). Will any of the Federal elected or candidates support term limits? How about a balanced budget amendment? Finally, which State elected officials and candidates will support home rule? Florida just celebrated 50 years of home rule, and it has currently been under attack by Tallahassee. You may not like all of our decisions as your local elected leaders, but we are your representatives (not hundreds of miles away making decisions that impact our local community). Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor, please feel to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321-794-6668.

FALL MOVIE PREVIEW By: Jim Warthen
Fall tends to be one of the slower seasons for moviegoers, and it’s easy to see why. Studios place their large tentpole films around summer vacations, or near winter holiday leisure times. But for you cinema lovers who need something to fill your film cravings year-round, I’ve put together a list of some promising films that will give you an excuse to go chow down on some popcorn and soda. Here’s a look at what’s headed your way.
The Predator (Sept 14)
These days, we seem to have more and more movies that are remakes, sequels, adaptations, or reboots. Kicking things off for September blockbusters, we have one such sequel. The Predator is the 4th installment in the Predator movie series, which started off in 1987 with the iconic Arnold Schwarzenegger action/sci-fi flick, Predator. The first 2 films in this series are widely regarded as the best of the series, and many of the creative forces behind those movies are returning for the latest entry in the saga. This could bode well for fans of the franchise who are looking for redemption after the poor performance of the Alien vs Predator movies… Check this one out, but do yourself a favor and watch the 1987 original before you head to the theaters for this one.
The House with a Clock in its Walls (Sept 21)
This film is a family-friendly one, as we might guess, since one of its main stars is comedian Jack Black. Cate Blanchett stars alongside him in a movie about a boy who goes to live with his uncle (Jack Black), who turns out to be a warlock. Mysterious antics and downright spookiness ensues, as the main characters fight to subdue the forces of evil that conspire to doom the world. The movie is directed by Eli Roth, who directed terrifying horror hits such as Cabin Fever and Hostel. It should be interesting to see what a bona fide master of nightmares does with a movie aimed a kid-friendly audience… This movie probably should have been released in October, but go check it out anyway for a good pre-Halloween romp with the family.
Night School (Sept 28)
Are you one of those moviegoers who prefer a hearty laugh to a good scare or loud explosion? Well this fall doesn’t seem to be a great time for you at the box office. This movie, Night School, about a group of adults who are taking late classes to earn their GEDs, is just about your only comedy offering this fall. Hollywood buzz and early reviews for this one aren’t fantastic, but if you need a laugh to balance out the fall scares, this may just do the trick. Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish are all the rage right now, and they headline this one. It should be fun to see if they can live up to the
hype they’ve built for themselves these days, so go see this one when you have a free evening.
Venom (Oct 5)
As we already know, adaptations are where it’s at right now, especially for comic book characters. If anyone thought they’d go more than a few months without a big-budget comic book movie coming our way, they were dreaming. This one is based off of a popular 90s Spider-Man villain. Venom stars Tom Hardy, in his second round as a comic character, after playing Bane in the Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises. Although this Marvel film won’t be tied into the giant Marvel Cinematic Universe that Disney owns, it should be a great Jekyll-and-Hyde-type story, sure to thrill audiences. Definitely go check this one out if you’re a fan of darker comic-based movies like Logan.
A Star is Born (Oct 5)
Speaking of adaptations and remakes… this film marks the third, yes THIRD remake of the 1937 film of the same name. The movie tells the story of a country musician who falls in love with another musician as she works her way toward stardom of her own. It features superstar Bradley Cooper alongside, wait for it… Lady Gaga. The story must be good to be able to support so many remakes, and this time Cooper himself is directing the movie, in his first attempt at working behind the camera. The rest of the names involved in production and casting look very solid, and the movie has all the indicators of a hit. If you want something to give you a good break between action and thrillers, here’s your best shot.
Halloween (Oct 19)
Sequel mania! This time, we’re getting a fresh addition to the Halloween franchise. The eleventh film in the series, to be exact! This movie is a direct follow up to the original however, and disregards all the other movies that came afterward. Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her characters role on the anniversary of the events of her brother’s iconic Halloween massacre from 40 years prior. This movie even hits theaters just a week prior to the actual 40th anniversary of John Carpenter’s original Halloween horror classic. Whether you’re a horror fan or not, it should be great to see Curtis return to a role that helped make her a cultural icon for decades. Bring someone who will let you squeeze their hand, but go watch this one to get the most out of this October scare-season. Cocoa Beach Explorer

BACK TO SCHOOL!
School year 2018-19 has begun. Teachers had a wonderful week of planning and preparation before the students returned. Students have returned, and we are in full swing. There are almost twenty new faculty/staff members at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS and a couple hundred new students when you add in the 7th grade students. The district has a new Superintendent, Dr. Mark Mullins, who began his career with BPS at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS. We are excited for the upcoming year and know that students and teachers will accomplish great things this year.
written by: Karyle Green, Ed.D., Principal, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS
We have some wonderful things to celebrate from summer results. First, one of our students, William Hedleston, won the United States Middle School Surfing Nationals. William is the middle school US Champion and helped the Cocoa Beach Surf Team to a 2nd place in all of the United States. His goal is to be selected for the 2020 Olympics. Our JROTC academic team participated once again in national competition in Washington DC. They earned the #1 ranking in Florida and #1 in the 6th Brigade. Amazing feats to be proud of, for sure! Team members are Capt. Jonathan Parent, Brittany Stanley, Kalik Pavliga and Aaron Netterstrom. Cocoa Beach High School had four students travel to France and Spain for a cultural and academic experience with our IB Coordinator, Dr. Jocelyn Baldridge. Students who attended are Toby McGuire, Logan Colangelo, Meagen Willoughby and Oliva Fay. They spent nine days traveling, experiencing culture, eating the local cuisine, spending time with students from Ohio and Kansas (and no, that group didn’t like the Wizard of Oz Jokes!!), visiting historic sites such as Le Louvre, Monet’s Gardens and La Sagrada Familia. Our faculty had a wonderful day of learning about “learning” led by a facilitator who practices around the world, Dr. Richard Hood. He will visit us again in February 2019. The best part of pre-planning is engaging teachers in looking forward to the new faces, new classes and new challenges of the year! Some important dates to get on your calendar include our first home football game August 24, Back to School Night August 28 and Homecoming week October 8 – 13. We are glad to be back!

For parents, one of the most challenging parts of the day is keeping children entertained in the car. It’s easy to pop in the latest Pixar or Disney movie to entertain your children. However, this time can be used to build positive family time and boost your children’s memory, language, and observation skills by playing car games. According to fatherly.com, the average family spends an hour in the car, every day, adding up to 365 hours a year. Here are some ideas to make this time more valuable.
I’m going to the Beach (or on a picnic or Disney World) The first family member begins by naming something that begins with A. I’m going to the beach and I’m driving an auto. The next person says, “I’m going to the beach and I’m driving an auto and taking a beach ball. The third person says, I’m going to the beach and I’m driving an auto, taking a beach ball, and some crackers. The family continues to work through the alphabet, repeating all of the previous items. If someone forgets an item, go ahead and prompt the person to keep the game going to the letter Z.
mailbox, a black and white dog, etc. Whoever spots one of the items shouts it out and then names a new item to find.
Alphabet Words The family searches for words outside on billboards, street signs, and other cars. Begin with the letter A and continue through the alphabet. Words only count if two family members see them.
Nursery Rhymes, Counting Songs, Traditional Children’s Songs, Patriotic Songs Don’t underestimate the positive power of these songs for your children’s early development. These songs help build basic language skills, teach children about rhyming words, and expand their vocabulary. It’s fun to revisit all of those songs from our childhood!
I SPY (Inside the Car) One family member is IT. He/she finds something inside the car and says, “I spy something green (or silver or black, etc.). The other family members have to name items to determine what has been chosen. The winner becomes IT. I Spy (Outside the Car) Each family member names something that might be seen during the drive, such as a flag, a VW Beetle, a green

Twenty Questions One person is IT. The person thinks of an animal, plant, or mineral. The other family members ask questions about size, color, and location to determine the answer. The family member who answers correctly is IT. Don’t limit the questions to 20. Sometime it takes many more to find the answer!
Travel Backpacks Put together a small backpack of fun items that are only used in the car. Include small toys, puppets, markers and white boards, crayons and small coloring books, and paper and pencil games like Battleship, Sudoku, Mad-Libs, or puzzle books. THE POWER OF SPORTS At Special Olympics, we believe that sports can teach us all important lessons. When we train and strive for a goal, it teaches us to dream. When we struggle, it teaches us determination. When we win, we find joy. And if we lose, we can find the strength to try again. Our sports events bring together a large and inclusive community of athletes, supporters and families, coaches, volunteers and many others. The athletes are at the center of it all. They become the heroes — to the shared joy of themselves, their families and their communities.
2018 STATE SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS September 15, 2018 Alan Shepard Park 202 E. Cocoa Beach Causeway Cocoa Beach, FL Opening Ceremony: 7-7:30am Competition: 8:30am-4pm
These events help us all rediscover the purity of sports — and real athletic pursuits — based on true Olympic ideals. Special Olympics trainings and competitions are empowering because our athletes prove to themselves what they can do. This inspires them to achieve even more, both in sports and in life. At each Special Olympics event, all of us can see and experience the purity of sports and real athletic success. Our athletes are pushing hard for goals some people can’t imagine, against obstacles few have had to face. Their drive to succeed comes from deep inside — it comes from the heart.
ship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. The ultimate objective of Special Olympics Florida is to help people with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public’s awareness of their capabilities and needs. Special Olympics Florida conducts ten State Championships every year. These events are the culmination of an athletes’ training and competition cycle for a specific sports season. In order to compete in a State Championship event, athletes and teams must have completed eight weeks of training and compete at county and area level competitions.
MISSION The mission of Special Olympics Florida is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual disabilities who wish to participate, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friend-

This world-class event not only features both Professional and Amateur surfing events but competitive tandem surfing, a Fashion Show with Live Music and Surf Movie on the beach, a Taste of Brevard and Silent Auction, and entertainment throughout the weekend to guarantee something for everyone. The Taste of Brevard and Silent Auction takes place on September 2nd at the Radisson at the Port in Cape Canaveral. This tropical event showcases all the wonders Brevard has to offer. Auction items include hand-painted surfboards, artwork from the Wyland Galleries, beach cruisers, surf packs, and much more. You are also able to enjoy samples from over 25 of Brevard’s finest restaurants. All of the proceeds go to the National Kidney Foundation of Florida to help increase awareness and prevention of kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation. Tickets are $35 and available on NKFsurf.com. They will be $40 at the door. With the help of over 300 volunteers and the support of the community, this year’s event is sure to make waves. The event is in honor of the co-founder and 3-time kidney recipient Rich Salick who passed away in July 2012. For more information on the NKF Pro-Am Surfing Festival, call 407-894-7325 or visit us online at www.nkfsurf.com.

CELEBRATING
FIRST FLIGHT Thirty Years of Serving The Citizens of Brevard County This September, First Flight will celebrate 30 years of serving the citizens of Brevard County. First Flight is the only air ambulance that services the East Coast of Central Florida and also responds to parts of Indian River and Osceola counties. Since 1988, First Flight has saved thousands of lives. First Flight is based at the Melbourne International Airport and is licensed by the State of Florida’s Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services to provide both pre-hospital and interfacility transport for adult and pediatric patients. “When First Flight gets an emergency call and quickly responds to the scene of an accident, you can be assured the finest and most highly skilled professionals are doing all they can to save lives when seconds matter the most” said Brett Esrock, CEO of Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center. “Health First is proud of First Flight and its 30 years of dedicated service to our community.
In the very beginning, the flight program was named “Care Flight” and operated a 350S ASTAR helicopter. A few years later in 1995, Health First acquired Metro Aviation as our vendor and currently remain in a partnership with them to date. In 1999, Holmes Regional Medical Center became certified as a Level II Trauma Center and First Flight’s call volume increased from approximately 400 flights per year to 855 flights per year. First Flight began operating in its current EC135 helicopter in 2000 and in 2006, began carrying blood for critically ill and injured patients. First Flight pilots and all crew members began wearing night vision goggles in 2011 to make night time operations much safer. First Flight has always grown with the community upgrading its equipment and services as needed, to stay on top of the industry standards to deliver high quality and safe care to the citizens of Brevard County.
