From San Francisco’s psychedelic Haight-Ashbury to the muddy meadows of Woodstock, the feel-good music of peace and love had us all dancing to the groove, whether young or old.

As the grand finale to the 2013 season, Elvis returns on September 14! California’s own Rob Ely performs two sets; the first a revue of where it all began with a young 1950s Elvis Presley, and the second set focusing on his 1968 black leather “comeback” tour. Ely has made numerous television appearances and won multiple performance awards, including “Best Elvis” at Thunder Valley Casino in January 2013, and is the “Elvis of choice” for the Oakland A’s baseball team. He’s so accurate, that many of his contest entries have even been sponsored by the one and only Elvis Presley Enterprises/Graceland.

Yosemite Grant Anniversary
I
n 2014 Yosemite celebrates its Sesquicentennial anniversary – 150 years ago Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove became the first public parkland the federal government had ever set aside, with President Lincoln declaring, “upon the express conditions that the premises shall be held for public use, resort and recreation.” Upcoming celebrations include events and programs that encourage all visitors to participate in and appreciate the birth of the national park “idea.” This iconic valley in California was central in shaping the idea of National Parks in the United States and around the world. Celebrations will include visitor events, an art exhibit, a documentary, as well as a commemorative book and stamp. For Yosemite Conservancy, whose legacy includes the Yosemite Museum Association (founded in 1923) to support the park, this anniversary captures the spirit of much of our work –protecting and preserving this magnificent place for future generations while enriching the visitor experience.

stablished as mining camps in 1852, Groveland and the nearby town of Big Oak Flat were once thriving California Gold Rush towns. After the decline in gold production, the historic town of Groveland made its mark offering hospitality to weary travelers coming to and from Yosemite National Park. Located only 26 miles from the northern entrance to the Park on Highway 120, today Groveland is the most convenient gateway for tourists coming from the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Stockton, or Modesto. Although Groveland boasts a population of approximately 3,000 full-time residents, this number often triples during the summer months. Visitors are attracted to both the magnificent beauty of this area, as well as the many recreational opportunities offered nearby. The Firefall in Yosemite
A
t 9:00 each evening in Camp Curry, the crowd which had gathered for the nightly campfire program, would fall silent. A man would call out to the top of Glacier Point “Let the Fire Fall!” A faint reply could be heard from the top of the mountain. Then a great bonfire of red fir bark would be pushed evenly over the edge of the cliff, appearing to the onlookers below as a glowing waterfall of sparks and fire.

Many travelers embark on an annual pilgrimage to Yosemite Valley to experience the breathtaking scenery during peak waterfall season. Many are unaware of Yosemite’s twin valley, Hetch Hetchy. John Muir referred to Hetch Hetchy as a

Waterfall Workshops held May 3-6 (www.yosemitetwinvalleys. com), and hosted by YExplore, will offer unique opportunities for photographers and outdoor enthusiasts to compare and contrast natural and geological features of both Yosemite and Hetch Hetchy landscapes through their own interpretive expressions. Activities will include photography field sessions and a two day plein air (outdoor) painting workshop. Other highlights include interpretive natural history hikes and birding walks throughout the “Twin Valleys” of Yosemite National Park. James McGrew willl lead of this annual four day event, and he will be joined by several local Yosemite professional photography guides and naturalists. James McGrew and David Lukas will each lead an interpretive hike to kick-off the celebration on May 3rd that will serve as an introduction to the landscape and its rich history. A two day combined plein air painting and naturalist workshop conducted by McGrew will begin on the 4th and will span both valleys. Alternately, several options of morning and evening light photo field sessions will be available on all

four days from a faculty of wellknown Yosemite photographers. Central to all programs will be a focus on the spectacular waterfalls during their peak season. National Geographic photographer, Phil Schermeister will be directing his popular Waterfalls class from Yosemite Valley. Robb Hirsch will share elements of composition with aspiring photographers in Hetch Hetchy while Yosemite veterans Al Golub, Gabriel Mange, and Joshua Cripps will guide daily photo sessions from various ‘insider’ shooting locations. O
n your way to or from Yosemite National Park along Highway 120, you’ll find Rainbow Pools as it crosses over the South Fork Tuolumne River bridge at just about the half-way point from Groveland, 13.5 miles. When traveling east on the highway you’ll pass the View Point Rim of the World parking area above the Tuolumne River canyon.About 1.5 miles further east, you’ll see the highway making a sweeping turn into a bridge overpass.The entrance is on the right as you start to cross the bridge. There is a sign for Rainbow Pools, but if you miss it, drive across the bridge until you see the turnoff for Cherry Lake and then turn around there.

over the falls where the covered bridge had been. They later renamed it the Cliff House. It was a popular resort well into the 1930s., but it burned to the bedrock in 1939.The property was rebuilt and expanded to include modern motel cabins. Another fire destroyed the Cliff House in 1958 and it was never rebuilt. Rainbow Pool exists today, as before, as a popular swimming hole inviting locals and travelers during the summer months, to take a cooling dip or adventurous plunge. You can picnic above in the designated area or day camp by the Pool edge. You can see the occasional diver make the sign of the cross just before they take their leap of faith plunge in the deep waters below the cliffs. It does take an adventurous sort but there seem to be plenty of brave plungers on any given day. It’s fun just to wade into the water and watch the exhibition for the afternoon. There are restrooms and picnic tables but parking is limited. Rainbow Pool is open all year.
In the days of stagecoach transport the pools were a scheduled stop and picnic area. John Cox was a toll collector on the road for about 20 years until tolls were eliminated in 1915. Cox1, a former Confederate soldier, had built a cabin on the site of the rocks above the falls from which he took a daily ‘bathing’ plunge. Mrs. Nellie Bartlett and her brother William Wilson leased the cabin and site in 1924. arlon Falls is a discovery much like that of Rainbow Pool. Upon first sight, you will happily wonder how it has escaped the throngs of visitors distracted by the rest of the Yosemite Valley. The falls are one of Yosemite’s lesserknown, even unknown waterfalls. This modest 3.5 mile trek begins outside of Yosemite’s boundaries. The trail elevation rises from 4400’ to 4600’ (approx,) 200 feet over its course and the distance makes for a great family outing. The trailhead can be found on Evergreen Road off Highway 120/Big Oak Flat Road, along the northward curve in the road towards Evergreen Lodge or Hetch Hetchy.
