Jackson State University graduates at the 2015 Undergraduate Commencement.
2016 job outlook for graduates up from last year Special to the Flash There is good news for 2016 college graduates. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the hiring outlook for college graduates continues to improve as employers plan to hire 11 percent more new college graduates from the Class of 2016 for their U.S. operations than they did from the Class of 2015. And the good news doesn’t stop there, the NACE survey also found that the perception of the job market among employers is also climbing. This year, 42 percent of employers that participated in the survey characterized the job market for Class of 2016 graduates as very good or excellent. Just two years ago, only 18 percent of responding employers had the same lofty

view of the job market for Class of 2014 graduates. According to Lashanda Jordon, the director of the Career Services Center at Jackson State, “Graduates should utilize the resources that have been provided for them, like the Career Services Center, to assist with their job search. By now they should have made contact with the Career Services Center and activated their Tigers2Work account to peruse and apply for job opportunities.” Jordan added: “Students should also research opportunities utilizing career websites, business journals/ magazines, USAjobs.gov, along with various employer career opportunities websites. Graduating students should also network with faculty, staff, family, and friends to find out about other job opportunities that might be available.” So what are JSU graduates

doing to get those most sought after jobs? “I’ve gone to a few conferences. One was a national conference, and I had a few interviews from there. A lot of the positions they were looking for are post-graduate, so I lot of them won’t get with me until after I graduate. I’ve also been doing a lot of searching on many job career websites such as Indeed and Career Builder. I’ve gotten a few calls back, but I’m still waiting on official offers,” said Khalal Walker, a senior from Fairfield, Calif. Walker added: “I’m a computer science major, and there are a lot of people in my program, but I kind of want to be on the business side of it. I wouldn’t mind a business technology or business analyst type of job dealing with how processes work and once the code and program is done, it gets sent to me for business
processing.” So what jobs are in high demand in 2016? According to CareerBuilder.com, technology and health care sector jobs continue to lead the field in providing job opportunities. Registered nurses came in at No. 1 with a whopping 296,631 average monthly job postings. Software developer positions are next with 114,921 average monthly job postings. Marketing managers, sales managers, medical and health services managers, network and computer systems administrators, industrial engineers, computer systems analysts, web developers and financial managers round out the list of top 10 in demand jobs. JSU Career Services Center offers different services and programs to prepare and assist students with the career development process and

post graduation employment services such as: Tigers2Work, professional development seminars, career fairs, oncampus recruitment, resume and interview preparation and more. Throughout the year, the staff at the Career Services Center offers students a wide range services; such as career coaching, to assist students in developing realistic and innovative career goals. Job search preparation is also offered to provide assistance with resume and cover letter writing, and the interview process. The center provides on-line career services that include TypeFocus and Perfect Interview. Congratulations to 2016 graduates who are prepared to walk off the stage and into the dream career. However, if you still need help, contact the JSU Career Services Center at 601979-2477 for assistance.

Jackson State University (JSU), it’s that time again that everyone has been waiting on, the end of the 2015-2016 academic year. Congratulations to the class of 2016 (including myself) who will be graduating Saturday. Graduates, this is a great accomplishment and a true milestone in our road to success. Remember to give back to Jackson State University, because as young alumni if we do not take care of our own, no one else will. For all returning students, as you prepare for finals and the summer, I wanted to give you some things to keep in mind. Participation in the 2016 presidential elections is vital this year, please research all candidates before you vote and make the best decision. Also, make sure you have registered for summer and fall courses. Do not be the student who comes back to JSU in the fall attempting to register and all
classes are full. To the freshmen (#JSU20) that will be receiving a copy of this paper once you move into your dormitory, welcome to JSU, where we challenge minds and change lives. Welcome to an institution that has produced successful alumni such as CBS correspondent, Demarco Morgan, former United States Secretary of Education, Rob Paige, actor Morgan Freeman, the Weather Channel’s Vivian Brown, and of course the late Walter Payton. As you enter the lobby of Alexander Hall and wonder why are their bullet holes in the wall, do not worry for your safety. You will learn in your University Success course about that tragic incident, and how JSU persevered racial tensions and thrives today. Enjoy the late nights sitting in front of Alexander Hall on the Gibbs-Green Pedestrian Walkway, that everyone calls, “The Plaza”, watching the Sonic Boom of the South march from the band hall to the practice field. You should take a tour of Ayers Hall located beside the H.T. Sampson Library. You will learn that it is the oldest building on campus and home to the Margret Walker Alexander Center. One thing that I never regretted was joining the Student Government Association (SGA). I met a lot of interesting people and a few of them are very close friends. I encourage you to think about joining, rather if it’s an elected position or volunteering
on a committee. SGA is a great way for you to meet your peers and serve your community and university. Even if SGA isn’t for you, there are numerous organizations for you to join, including departmental, social justice, and national organizations. Do not get caught up in the fun of JSU, remember you are here to get a degree and walk across that stage making your family and yourself proud. We have a saying here at JSU, those who attend class tend to pass. As freshmen, your professors are looking for those dedicated students who show an interest in learning. Make a good impression on them by introducing yourself to them and going to them if you need any help in the courses. There are plenty of upperclassmen that are willing to tutor freshmen. Trust me, they understand you guys are the future of our dear ole college home, and they want to see you succeed. JSU is a family, and you are now a part of Tiger Land. Be sure to utilize every resource, including alumni to ensure you succeed while you’re at JSU and long after you graduate. Oh, and learn the alma mater! We like to say it a lot, #TheeiLove. The views expressed in the commentary are those of the writer(s) and in no way represent the views of The Blue & White Flash.

THE BLUE & WHITE FLASH SENIOR FAREWELL LETTERS
Mark Braboy After three and a half years, my run here at The Blue & White Flash is finally over. Not only that, but this year, my matriculation at Jackson State University will be coming to an

end. The memories, experiences, and friendships I made over the past few years have shaped me into who I am today. When I was made Associate Editor of the Flash, I felt like I walked into something I was not exactly prepared for when I returned. As I gradually moved up from Staff Writer, to News Editor, to A.E., my responsibilities became more extensive. From there, I realized that not only I was in charge of a whole newspaper, but I was being groomed for dealing with working in a corporate environment. I feel like I got a taste of what I would have to look forward to in corporate America and I learned quickly how to conduct myself accordingly. When former editor and my best friend De’Arbreya Lee brought me to the Flash in the
Dear Jackson State University and The Blue and White Flash, Although this is quite overwhelming, the time has finally come for me to leave such an awesome institution, thee Jackson State University.
I have really enjoyed my time at Jackson State University, and I appreciate having the opportunity to work with The Blue & White Flash. I am so grateful that I had the privilege to be a part of such an incredible team; for the B&W Flash has provided me with some of the proudest moments and best learning experiences throughout my matriculation at JSU. Thank you for the support, guidance and encouragement you have provided me during my time with the B&W Flash. Even though I will miss my colleagues, instructors, and the institution, I am looking forward to starting a new phase of my life. Thanks again. It has been a pleasure being a part of the Blue and White Flash.
Fall of 2012, I felt like I finally found the long lost path I have been searching for. I always had a vision about being a music journalist, but I never quite knew how to go about doing it. Because of the Flash, it gave me more of a reason to earn my degree besides just to simply have a job. About 90 percent of my success here at the Flash I owe to Shannon Tatum and former graphic designer Ernest Camel. Although I have left many impressions on them, I can say that the two of them were the first people to speak up for me when I started to prove myself. I won numerous awards and gained a lot of new contacts because those two believed in what I could do. What I always appreciated about Ms. Tatum is that she is willing to give anybody, no matter what their circumstances may be, an opportunity. Because of her leadership and my hard work, we have been able to produce some of the best journalism we have
Orionna Brumfield “Thee I Love” my dear old college home. As I transferred to Jackson State University, I
produced in years. Even though I got on her last nerve at times, especially this wild and crazy semester, I can say that they will always have a special place in my heart forever. In this letter, I also have to pay homage to professors of the Department of English and Modern Foreign Language. While I have not been the best student in the world, I appreciate the quality education I have received from them as well as their honesty and dedication to work each and every student. If I hadn’t learned how to be a solid writer, critical thinker, and have the ability to analyze people and situations, I would not have been a successful writer. Dr. Jean Chamberlain was a woman who’s opinion I appreciated the most because she held no punches, but it came from a warm place of love. I miss her dearly. I would like to also pay homage to Sylvia Watley. While she is a very challenging woman at times, I understood that she is
tough for a reason. When she sees greatness in a person, she wants to make sure that they are at the top of their game at all times, even if she had to break you down in order for a person to realize their own potential. Finally, I want to give thanks to the other former editors Diamond Jenkins, Tiffany Edmondson, and especially Taylor Bembery. You all have set a high standard for yourselves that I hope to achieve for myself. I look up to you all and your accomplishments inspire me every day All I ever wanted to do was be a great music writer, tell stories about the real people of JSU, and inform students about the issues that affect them. I am glad I got a chance to do this and I hope many more students join this organization. Now, I am a contributing writer for VIBE.com and a freelance writer for XXL Magazine. I will also be interning for Chicago Magazine this summer. If it wasn’t for The Blue & White Flash, I would not be where I am today.
heard my peers say that ALL THE TIME. I was a transfer junior, and I did not know many people, but I was curious. I was curious to know what “Thee I Love” really meant, so I decided to discover the meaning. As I look back at my journey, I can truly say that I am thankful for all the lessons (good or bad) I learned from Jackson State. This is more than just a university you go to for a degree, but the people composed in it can really change your life for the best IF YOU LET THEM. I allowed the right people to come in my life, and they
have truly impacted me forever. Because of JSU, I look at my future differently. I have met great people of all backgrounds who came to our university as guest speakers OR they are the teachers, faculty, administration, or students I see all the time who truly inspire me to be the best I can be. As I go into another chapter in my life, I know that my university will always be there for me, and I want to do the same for them. I will never forget what I have been blessed with here, and I know that I will come back as a proud alumna because now I know what “Thee I Love” is all about.

Thee I love my dear ol college home. In just a few days from now, I will be able to call Jackson State University my alma mater. I will finally get to say after four long years, I made it and I am an alumna. Yes, our department has gone through a lot of changes, ups and downs, but that did not stop us. We were able to produce, The new School of Journalism and Media, Studies which I am very proud of. I

Jackson State University has taught me a lot about myself, the knowledge, the patience, and the wisdom has been very helpful throughout my time at Jackson State University. As I prepare to move on to the next venture in my life I would always cherish the moments, the laugher and fun that I experienced here. The most important thing that To The Blue and White Flash: As I write this, I find it very difficult to put everything I want to say in just 250 words. I remember vividly when I walked through the doors of room 208 in the Blackburn building asking then editor, Taylor Bemberry, “Is this The Blue and White Flash.” Who knew that three years later I would be sitting at the same desk as she sat recruiting young journalists to be a part of The Flash. When I served as News Editor, my most memorable
would like to take the time and thank everyone who is over and who contributed to The Blue and White Flash. Ms. Tatum, you are a wonderful person, who introduced me to the newspaper my sophomore year of college. You taught me that newspaper writing style differs from television and radio style writing. I also learned when you have a bad week when it comes to your article, do not give up, because I know I experienced that! Being able to put this on my resume and show off my articles in a portfolio. It is a honor to be graduating with a group of brilliant individuals who I know are going to make a name for themselves. Life long connections were definitely made and I can’t wait to see what the “real world” brings. All in all, I am grateful for all of the professors I learned from and the lifetime friends and experiences I gained in the process. Once again, thank you for all of the opportunities over the four years. I got from Jackson State University is the education. When I first came here, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my career as a mass communication student. In the long run I ended up finding my calling in filmmaking. Being here I feel like I achieved so many goals. I joined a lot of organizations on campus as well as forming my own organization called students of cinema. I would like to thank the blue and white flash for helping me develop my skills as a writer, enhancing my photography skills and video editing abilities. Being apart of this publication has shaped me into a great individual as well as a professional. I would like to thank the Blue and white Flash as well Jackson State University for such a great time here at this wonderful institution. Peace and blessing moment was covering the student government elections. My commentaries made so many people around campus upset, administration included, but it was then that I realized I had become a true journalist. I reported the tough stories that no one else could do while a writer of The Flash. This paper led me to the many opportunities in my collegiate career. I went to Capitol Hill to intern for a powerhouse Senator. If it were not for Ms. Shannon Tatum and Ms. Kierra Thomas for encouraging me to
As my time here at Jackson State comes to an end, I would first like to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity. A lot of people aren’t as fortunate to even get a chance at pursing a college degree. It’s been a long four years here at JSU but I’ve enjoyed them. The time I spent here has helped me grow and mature. I want to thank my track and field coaches for all they have done for me here. I really appreciate you both and wish you nothing but the best. To my teammates present and past, I thank you guys for being great individuals and making my track career here at JSU one I’ll never forget. To all the good friends I’ve made over the years here I appreciate you guys as well.
William Owens
In concluding my collegiate career at Thee Jackson State University, there are countless things that I must acknowledge. To attempt to name a few, my beginning path to adulthood, and responsibility. Upon initially setting foot on the Gibbs-Green Pedestrian Walkway, I was barely capable of walking in my own shoes, let alone able to set a responsible bed time for school nights. Nonetheless, I knew that I had plenty of people to prove wrong, and one person to prove right. Before being accepted into the university that I would come to love, there were doubts of what school I would attend, reach as high as I could, I would have missed that blessing. The advisors of The Flash are not just my editors and supervisors anymore, they are true friends that I will cherish long after I leave Jackson State University. To the new bright and talented journalists entering The Flash, please take this advice from me. As a journalist you are supposed to make people uncomfortable and upset when reporting the truth. If no one is moved by your stories then you are not doing your job.
I want to thank the faculty and staff of The School of Journalism and Media Studies for helping me grow and also lending a helping hand when I needed it. I remember coming in as a freshman thinking how hard this process was going to be but I was determined to succeed. I’ve finally made it to the finish line and it’s a great feeling. One chapter is coming to an end and another one is about to begin. Again, thank you to everyone who helped me throughout this process. You are greatly appreciated. The crazy thing is I never considered going to an HBCU when I was deciding where I wanted to go, but I’m glad I did. Thank for the memories THEEilove! and if I would get accepted anywhere that I applied. To this day, this is something that I have always held in my thoughts for motivation. There are many people that have helped me with my successes, and accomplishments that I have achieved so far. First of all;THANK YOU GOD! To Taylor Bembery, thank you for instilling in me at an early state to be proactive in my field, and without you, I possibly may not be able to state some of the latter names. Ms. Tatum, thank you for continually being a leading voice of concern and reason, and keeping me on track for success. Ms, Watley, thank you for always holding me accountable, even at times when I refused to myself. Dr. Anthony, thank you for helping me obtain the internship from the very computer that I am typing this letter from. I would not have a job waiting for me after graduation if you did not. To my mom, thank you for always believing in me, especially when others wouldn’t. You have always been my greatest motivation to be successful. Last, but not least,to Jackson State University, thank you for making me into the man that I am today.

As we now embark on our college journey here at Thee Jackson State University, I would like to take the time and thank everyone from the bottom of my heart. This has not just been a journey that I’ve walked alone but one that many have shared with me. Every new beginning comes from one beginning that is ending. The Blue & White Flash staff has been a part of my family for the past three years. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the laughs, good times and most importantly, telling stories with my fellow journalists. It was here at this pristine University where I learned the true meaning of family and to believe in myself. Here my gift for telling stories and reporting on the news afforded me many opportunities and for that alone, I am so humble and gracious to have been able to do so on a platform this great. Thank you to the new School of Journalism and Media Studies because the vision to make more conscious media moguls was displayed and to be the first graduating class from this new school is humbling. To Ms. Tatum and Ms. Thomas, the two role models who have shaped the woman I am today. I owe gratitude and a lot more. They really took me under their wing and help mold this vivacious and bold personality that you see in front of you. Thank you to everyone that believed in me and supported me in any way.

Athletics honors student-athletes at sports banquet Jenna Siddiqui MC Contributor
Jackson State University hosted its Annual Athletic Banquet on April 13th. This allows all athletic teams to gather in one location to dine while the university recognizes them for their hard work in the classroom as well as the court or field. Recognitions and awards include Most Valuable Player, Offensive and Defensive Awards, Academic Achievement Award and more. All teams were represented, except for the baseball team who had a double header that day, where they swept Concordia-Selma. Although some teams, such as tennis, baseball and softball are still in season, two JSU sports teams were recognized this year for winning SWAC: volleyball and bowling. Senior art major, Keirsten Howard from Austin, Texas was so proud of herself and the rest of the volleyball team when they won SWAC. This is her second title. “Winning SWAC again as a senior was so surreal but very deserving. After freshman year, the class I came in with, “The Fab 5”, and I promised we weren’t leaving without another ring and we did just

that. The whole team had the same goal and mindset and all our hardworking showed,” said Howard. Her hard work definitely showed and was also recognized at the banquet as she received the “Unsung Hero” Award. “I am so thankful. I’m glad
I could help contribute to a successful season and I’m glad my hard work and trust in God these past four years paid off. This being my senior year, this banquet was the best one yet because it was the last and final time to be in the same room with all my fellow athletes and friends. It was a
good feeling,” Howard said. Some came to support their friends and teammates, but many came to be recognized for all of their hard work and had trouble juggling all of his awards at once. Javancy Jones, a junior football player from Macon, Miss., could barely hold
all of the awards that he received. He was recognized and awarded: Player of the Year Award, Black College All American Award, First Team All SWAC Award, and National Leader in Tackles for Loss Award. “I thought the banquet was great. A lot of people don’t understand the actual life of a student athlete. The people who actually understand are our fellow student athletes and it’s a blessing to be around so many people shooting for the same goal,” Jones said. Some athletes attended and received awards even though they were not finished with their season. One of these players, included Julia Angermann, a senior psychology major from Germany, who is on the women’s tennis team. She received the MVP award and the Acadmic Achievement Award. “It meant a lot to me. I always give my best on and off the court and to get those awards made me really happy. I felt like all my hard work payed off,” said Angermann. That weekend, the women’s tennis team made it to the championship, but lost in the finals. The men’s tennis team won the SWAC title that weekend, for the first time in over a decade.
