Charmeise Jackson, a Jackson State University senior English major from Wadsworth, Ill., will graduate on May 3rd, and is not as confident of landing a job as graduates in other majors. “No, I don’t think I’m confident about my job prospects, I’m still looking,” she said. “I got one call but it’s for internships. I’m not trying to stress about it too much because I know I’ll find something.” Some Mississippi students plan to move out of state in search of more immediate opportunities. Labreia Thurman, senior political science major from Greenwood, Miss., said: “It
really depends on where I decide to live because there are more opportunities in bigger cities than if I stay here in Mississippi. I plan on moving to Baltimore because I think I have better opportunities there for school and work. The job market here is really, really small.” According to CareerCast. com, 10 of the best jobs in 2014 are: mathematicians, tenured university professors, statisticians, actuaries, audiologists, dental hygienists, software engineers, computer systems analysts, occupational therapists, and speech Outlook, Cont. on pg.7

We all know that summer is right around the corner and so many of us are eager to go back home to kick back and relax. That does seem like a great way to let go of the stresses of having to go to classes, but it is never a great thing to allow yourself to release your mind of everything you have learn throughout your semesters in school. How will you stay productive? No internship? Find a job. For those of you who have not been fortunate enough to have an internship for the summer, go out and look for a job that is close to the career that you are pursuing. If there is not a job available that is synonymous to your career choice, find a job that will help you gain experience. Also look for an organization to join that is in connection to your major. Volunteer for community service. With your spare
time, find an organization that sparks your interest and volunteer at least one to two times per week. Not only will you volunteer somewhere that you are intrigued by, but you will earn the opportunity to let the advisors get to know you. Once the advisors know you, they will have a great idea of who you are as a person and worker. With that, you should not have a difficult time acquiring a scintillating letter or recommendation. Learn to live a healthy lifestyle. Many of us face the challenges of becoming healthy and sometimes we do not know where to start and it can be hard to stay persistent. If you are not fortunate enough to have a gym membership, use social media to guide you toward starting a health journey. Instagram and YouTube gurus that are very knowledgeable when it comes to being healthy. Use the advice of many Instagramers and YouTubers to get your foot in the door to becoming a healthier you. Keep your brain active. Yes, we will be out of school for summer but that does not mean that you should let go of the things that you have learned in those classes that seemed to last for ages. Instead of kicking your feet up and indulging in a day filled with cartoons and reality shows, work your brain. Read a book that is interesting to you. Grab some friends and go to the museum and learn about
the extinct inhabitants of this universe. Find games to play that require you to take time out to think such as “Better Brain Age Test” which can be downloaded in your app store. Prepare for your future. If you are a student pursuing a career in medicine, start preparing over the summer by taking practice MCAT exams or by taking summer MCAT Prep course. It does not matter what your major is because it is never too early to prepare for your exams such as the GRE, LSAT, or PRAXIS I & II. It can get you closer to your dreams. To be productive over the summer I will learn what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. Although I do workout consistently, I do not have guidance from someone who is actually a fitness expert. I will find someone to teach me the fundamentals of becoming physically healthy while I work on the other half of delving into a healthy mind. A healthy mind for me is exactly who I am. It is learning to appreciate myself as I am but not forgetting to understand the things that need to be altered for myself and no one else. I will be productive this summer in constructing myself.

Senior Farewells that have worked with the paper in years past and doubted that my drawings would even hold a candle to theirs. I am a chemistry major that used to draw as a long lost hobby... What was I doing trying to draw for a college publication? I didn’t see myself making it past year one, let alone three. Working for the Flash has been a learning experience, though. Not only have I been able to
get tips from accomplished cartoonists like Marshall Ramsey, but I have learned a lot about myself as well. I have learned that you can not go into situations doubting yourself, no matter how you foresee the outcome. I appreciate the staff for both the great times and encouragement throughout the years. Thanks also for letting me draw for you, allowing me to do something I had
Thank you for allowing me to assist with writing various stories for the newspaper these past few years. I am appreciative of the experience that I received working with student publications and it is something that I will cherish forever. From Learning the ins and outs of AP style writing,
accurately quoting sources, deadlines, to attending media conferences. I can truly say my experience thus far from the Flash, has prepared me to take on any task that the workforce may throw my way. I recently accepted a full-time position as a news producer at WLBT/WDBD and will begin producing
the 8 a.m. newscast. Also I am planning to attend graduate school and study public relations and corporate communication. I want to say thank you for everything because I truly found a home at The Flash. To students, please take this great opportunity and write for your school newspaper, it’s really a rewarding experience.
It seems like it was yesterday that I was congregating with my classmates on the Gibbs-Green pedestrian walkway outside of Alexander Dormitory my freshman year. Since my arrival at Jackson State University as a freshman in 2009, I challenged myself to become a better person than I was before I set foot on campus. I wanted to be more sociable, step outside of my comfort zone, yet staying true to myself in the process. Now, just a week away from graduation, my matriculation throughout college has bought upon life lessons, experiences, and relationships which have prepared me for life after undergrad. During my freshman year, I vowed to make the best out of my college experience and gain a new perspective on life. After high school, I wanted to press a reset button and start fresh with new memories and grow as a
young adult. Although, it took me a while to adjust to college, I quickly got accustomed to the culture at JSU. My freshman and sophomore year had to be the best years during my time at Jackson State. I often find myself reminiscing about some of the foolery that took place in Alexander: The fights, loud music, parties/forums in the lobby, unsanitary housing conditions, random fire alarms at 4 a.m., listening to the Sonic Boom practice during late nights, food fights in the café, having hotspots throughout the night as well as three times a week. Five years later, those memories have become nostalgic. Once entering my sophomore year, I soon realized that I needed to be flexible with academics and extra activities. That was the time I joined the JSU NAACP chapter and met the late NAACP President Michael Teasley. Mike and I shared so many memories, that I can’t keep count. He has
been my guardian angel since the day God called him home and I know he’s in heaven cheering for me and his fiancée Dominique McCraney. Also, I have to give the utmost gratitude to my first and only mentor/professor/ motivator, Dr. Hilliard Lackey. I remember meeting you when I was in the summer development program, you always pushed me to through any adversity that I faced. Jackson State University has brought the best and worst out of me, I have made some dumbfounded decisions that I regret, but I willingly took that as a lesson to be learned. I want to give thanks to The Blue & White Flash for believing in me and offering me a chance to prove myself. You all have made my years at JSU worthwhile, writing for the Flash has made me realize my value and my passion in life. Ms. Shannon, you were primarily the reason why I became enthusiastic to share my talent to the student body and I can recall being timid to
Illustrating for The Blue and White Flash for the past three years has been nothing short of an amazing experience. It has given me the opportunity to give something back to my university; to leave at least one thing here to be proud of. When I first started drawing for the Flash, I wasn’t sure that I would be of much help. I was certain that there had been several art majors

join the staff, because I wasn’t confident in my capability to write. I wouldn’t have written a single article if it wasn’t for your encouragement and astute wisdom. Ms. Sylvia Watley, advisor of student publications, thank you for all of the constructive criticism of my work. Your blunt remarks, and candid conversations have prepared me for the real world. I know I almost drove you into a psychiatric ward several times with my stubbornness and unorthodox conduct in the office. Thank you for putting up with me and giving me chance after chance to redeem myself. I couldn’t have chosen a better HBCU that would have molded me into the young lady that I am today. JSU has definitely challenged my mind and changed my life forever. I’m not sure where my destination will be, only God knows that answer but I won’t forget about my Dear Ole College Home, wherever I may roam.

Cont. from pg.1 pathologists. Salaries for these professionals ranged from approximately $70,000 to 100,000. Based on salary, negative hiring outlook, low median salary, and high stress environment, the top 10 worst jobs for 2014, include lumberjack, newspaper reporter, enlisted military personnel, taxi driver, broadcaster, head cook, flight attendant, garbage collector, firefighter, and
corrections officer. Salaries for these positions range from $23,000 to $55,000. For graduates crossing the stage in a few days who do not already have employment or graduate school lined up, it might be a little late to start the job hunt. Lashanda Jordan, Director of the JSU Career Services and Student Employment Center, advised students to start looking for internships and jobs at least eight to ten months before graduation and summer internships at least six to eight
months before the summer. “Students should strive very hard to get some type of related experience in the form of internship or co-op prior to graduation. It has become vital to the students to have this experience to make themselves more marketable to a prospective employer,” said Jordan. She added: “Companies want students to have great communication and interpersonal skills along with critical thinking skills the ability to be creative and to be able to

work collaborative. Students can prepare by taking advantage of the academic opportunities in college to learn and practice these skills and be involved in organizations that allow them to hone their skills.” Throughout the year, Jordan and her staff try to inform students that the Career Services Center offers students a wide range services such as Career Coaching, to assist students in developing realistic and innovative career goals; Job Search Preparation, to provide assistance with resume and
cover letter writing, and the interview process. The center provides on-line career services that include Tigers2Work, TypeFocus, and Perfect Interview. Some students also take advantage of on-campus recruitment where numerous employers annually conduct interviews for internship, and full-time career opportunities, internship opportunities, and annual special events such as career fairs, graduate and professional schools day, and teacher recruitment day.

Poetic Justice jeans throws a curve at fashion norms Taylor Bembery Associate Editor
The search for a pair of jeans that compliment your unique curves is over with Poetic Justice Jeans. Kalia Kirby, designer of Poetic Justice Jeans, the new groundbreaking denim line made specifically for women with voluptuous figures, focuses on creating real jeans for real women. “I was exposed to beauty, fashion, and glamour; and everything that is fashion at a really young age. I think that had a big influence on my passion and my love for design,” said Kirby. Kirby is a native of Los Angeles, Calif., a graduate of Apparel Design from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and has a Master of Fine Arts in Fashion Design at the Academy of Art University. She was inspired to get into fashion from growing up around the Hollywood scene. Even though Kirby was inspired by west coast culture at the beginning of her designing career; she shifted

gears when she realized there was a gray area in the fashion world. Going to college in the southern region where women are known to be curvier, she felt that those women were not being accommodated. Poetic Justice Jeans was originally a project where Kalia was appointed by a company to be the lead designer for the entire line. With her creative direction, the innovating line of jeans has become her own. She explained how her brand
separates itself from any other brand on the market. “My ideas came from what was definitely a product of who I am as a designer and my shape. I was inspired by my family members, black women, and Latin women. The struggle of what we go through on a daily basis trying to find clothes that fit our body types. Other brands don’t target a girl with shape, specifically most of these brands are just about fit for girls that have a straight up
and down figure. Not someone that has a shape and accepts her shape. We noticed when we were doing some research on different companies, they have a curvy fit and it is one fit but it doesn’t necessarily fit for everything; like it would fit my thighs but my underwear would show, that’s not hot,” said Kirby. She added: “Finding a solution for a problem that speaks closely to me: being a woman with shape and curves.
It is very hard to find jeans that fit you and compliment you. Butt, hips, and thighs; all those are beautiful things. Women shouldn’t have to compromise.” Not only are these jeans fashionable but they are also affordable, starting only at $42. Kirby takes pride in her grassroots style of marketing to reach her demographic. “There is no reason for women that have curves to have to pay $100 for a good pair of jeans. It’s easier to take it to the streets and start from the bottom up. If somebody that’s a celebrity buys them that’s great. I just want to get the college girls and women that are still trying to be fashionable but still want to save money,” said Kirby. Ten years from now Kalia hopes to have Poetic Justice Jeans as household brand and in Department Stores all over the world but until then you can shop at www. PoeticJusticeJeans.com. Future television meteorologist sheds light on autism Taylor Bembery Associate Editor

JSU Sophomore, Jordan Darensbourg.
Jordan Darensbourg, a sophomore Meteorology major from Smyrna, Ga., is one of the friendliest guys you could meet on the campus of Jackson State University. He’s active on campus and many people don’t know that Jordan has Asperger syndrome, which is an autism spectrum disorder. April is National Autism Awareness month and Darensbourg wants to raise awareness about the disorder on campus by sharing his story. Asperger syndrome belongs to a distinct group of complex neurodevelopment disorders characterized by social impairment, communication difficulties, and restrictive, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. “Autism is an issue that has never been addressed as much as it should, and that really saddens me because this is one of the biggest issues among us as Americans,
and the fact that certain people have not been able to understand people with Autism is highly nonsensical,” said Darensbourg. “Too often people like us are not seen as the face of autism. I want to be an example of how successful people with Asperger’s can be if they receive the help that they deserve early on.” He added: “It is not talked about in the African American community because mental health is looked down on. But we need to change that. It is nothing to be ashamed of. Asperger’s folks like me have a unique perspective in life. We see the world through a different set of lenses. And I am cool with that. It is what makes me who I am. Early detection and intervention is so important because without it, thousands of children with Autism have nothing to help them become successful through life. I am fortunate enough to have had that support and that intervention at a young age so that I could be more successful.”
Jordan excels at JSU and was recently elected by his class to be Mr. Junior 20142015. He is also a member of several organizations: Chorale, JSU Singers, Honors College, SGA Street Team, RUF, and Catholic Student Association. “The accomplishment is that I have been elected by my peers to have the honor of being JSU’s next Mr. Junior, and what makes it more special is that I was elected during Autism Awareness Month. I want the Superb Class of 2016 to be remembered as the best class ever at Jackson State. I believe we as a class can make a difference in the world of awareness whether it be autism, sickle cell or other special needs,” said Darensbourg. His future goal is to become a television meteorologist in a major city, like Los Angeles, Chicago, or New York. “I see myself in front of a screen doing weather reports that can potentially save lives,” he said.
