Interim President encourages faculty, staff, students, and Jackson community William H. Kelly III Editor-in-Chief

Jackson State University officially welcomed Interim President Roderick Paige on Nov. 29 in the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center (AAC), giving Paige the opportunity to address numerous topics. Faculty, staff, students, and the Jackson community were present in the AAC for this occasion. “So let me just briefly talk about three things. First, I want to say Jackson State is sovereign. Second, Jackson State is strong; and third, Jackson State is respected,” said Paige. “Now I’m sure you are aware of the side step, little or much, of the financial

constraints that the media has provided information about to all of us. Let me assure you that Jackson State is moving in the right direction to overcome those problems; those problems are real. Jackson State’s reserves has been reduced to a dangerously low level but we can argue maybe those expenditures were about things that are really good for the university but we have troubles affording them at this point,” said Paige. Paige continued: “But be that as it may, it is as it is and so our job right now is to strive past the financial instability and we have a plan to do that, we know how to do that. We have the leadership to do that, and we will do that. You and your families have gone through these kind

of belt tightening periods, you’ve been in organizations that have through these kind of belt tightening periods, and you know how that comes out, it comes out based on how you handle it during those belt tightening periods and so with all togetherness and new leadership we’ll get this done.” Paige urged the JSU community to have patience as through the financial challenges. “I have to be honest, this is going to be a challenge for us. Right now, we are faced with somewhere in the neighborhood with a $5 billion gap that we gotta deal with. It is as it is and we must face it, deal with it, and get on down the road. We can get that done. When it comes to reducing spending,

that’s not comfortable, it is challenging but we have to take our medicine, it is apart of the cure…I’m encouraging you to help us with this, you will hear more details about the plan.” Students, such as Kayla Green, were impressed by Paige’s words of encouragement. “I personally enjoyed the event and getting to see the new president. I feel like he’s going to bring good changes to the university and help it grow. I think he’ll have the students best interest at heart since he did attend here,” said the sophomore biology major from Shreveport, La. Phillip Kilgore, a sophomore computer engineering major from Dermott, Ariz., was also satisfied. “Hearing Dr. Roderick

Paige speak on his vision for the university lets me know that we are in good hands,” said Kilgore. Paige went on to name the many accolades associated with Jackson State University that other institutions have not achieved and that the JSU community should be proud. “Three of our students are now waiting to receive a patent for a program that they have invented as a diabetes monitoring device as a result of the learning they got here at this great university,” said Paige. He added: “Jackson State University has been, is now, and will forever be a place of opportunity for young people…The world belongs to you guys and they are preparing for that here at this university.”

Current National Baptist Convention President Reverend Dr. Jerry Young is the featured speaker for the Jackson State University Fall 2016 Commencement at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9 in the Lee. E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. Young, a Scott, Miss. native, was elected National Baptist Convention President in 2014 under the leadership of Julius R. Scruggs and made history as the first Mississippi pastor chosen for the position. For over 15 years, he has served under Dr. William J. Shaw, 16th President of the NBC, USA, Inc., and was appointed the 2nd Vice President over the Southwestern Region, where he served two terms. During Julius R. Scruggs’s term as 17th President, Young served as Vice President-at-Large. Young has led the congregation of New Hope Baptist Church since 1980. He is the founder and headmaster of New Hope Christian Pre-School and New Hope Christian

Elementary School, together serving over three hundred students, from infants to 6th grade. Young attained an Associate of Arts in Social Science from Coahoma Junior College in Clarksdale, Miss. He received a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Social Welfare from Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Young earned a Master of Divinity and a

Doctor of Ministry from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Miss. Dr. Mark G. Henderson is the featured speaker for the Jackson State University Fall 2016 Undergraduate Commencement at 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 9 in the Lee. E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center . Henderson, department chair for the Department of Speech and Theater at

Jackson State is a native of Canton, Miss. After graduating from Canton High School, he attended Jackson State University and received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Speech Communication Studies and Dramatic Art. Henderson also received a Master of Arts in Communications and Urban Studies from Michigan State University. Henderson returned to Mississippi and enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the University of Southern Mississippi where he received a doctorate degree in Speech Communication. Henderson is the Founder/Artistic Director of MADDRAMA, a troupe of Jackson State University performers who tour nationally with an extensive repertoire of original plays and specialized performances that are highly requested. He balances his professional time between two areas in which he share in equal passion: Speech Communication and Theater. As a scholar in the area of Speech Communication, Henderson’s interest area is Interpersonal Communication with an YES, WE’RE SOCIAL!

emphasis on Language and Culture. He conducts leadership workshops on Effective Communication in the Workplace, Interpersonal Relationship Building among College Students, and Voice & Diction. Henderson devotes much of his time directing and producing theater for MADDRAMA and the Department of Speech and Theatre at JSU. He was most recently commissioned by the Canton, MS Convention & Visitors Bureau & Film Office to direct the world premiere of the stage play “Thea’s Turn”, which chronicles the life and contribution of AfricanAmerican educator and nun, Sister Thea Bowman. Henderson served as the 31st President of the National Association of Dramatic and Speech Arts. In 2010, Henderson was selected to be part of the inaugural edition of the Who’s Who in Black Mississippi Directory. In 2013, he was selected as JSU Humanities Teacher of the Year, and was recently the Hometown Hero Award recipient by the Jackson Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Mailed Diplomas

Diplomas will be mailed to students by the Registrar and Records office approximately four to five weeks following the commencement ceremony. Diplomas will be shipped via the United States Postal Service. Students should make sure that the diploma mailing address that they provided on their graduation application is accurate during the time that the diploma will be shipped. Graduation is not the end of the journey, it is the beginning COMMENTARY

Deirdra Harris Glover Managing Editor This is the beginning. Many people think of graduation as an end goal, but it’s a waypoint. It’s certainly worth celebrating, because it is a major

accomplishment, but I am less interested in the ritual of tassel and mortarboard than I am in what you will do after the caps and gowns are returned. We crack a new chapter in our lives as the United States departs drastically from the legacy of our first black president, as the west doubles-down on white supremacy and nationalism. Gatlinburg and Aleppo are burning. The world’s indigenous peoples are facing violence and treaty violations at the hands of the U.S. government. Climate change, increasing government surveillance, poverty and homelessness, disease, systemic oppression and marginalization are just a few of the problems our world faces at this pivotal time. So what are you going to

do about it? Community service isn’t an arbitrary requirement for graduation clearance: it is the very soul of a life of purpose and engagement. We belong in board rooms and corner offices, on the big screen, in world-class laboratories, and we even belong in space. What drew you to your field of study, and how are you going to use it to help mankind? It’s a question each of us should meet with equal parts dread and awe. Living up to your potential is a sobering prospect. The world needs our talents and skills at work for its betterment—that doesn’t always mean turning out for protest, but it does mean showing up with your whole, complicated selves in your work of the day. Even if you never want to

run for office, register to vote and commit to voting in local elections as well as presidential elections. Build systems of support for the marginalized, even if it’s as small as speaking up in the face of hate speech. If you have great success in your career, consider donating money from public appearances to charities that befit your worldview. Recycle. Save Water. Immunize. Remember that you can engage your legislators on the problems you see in approximately the same amount of time it would take you to fire off an angry text. We will forget these things. There will be times when we do not engage because it’s scary, because it doesn’t involve us, because we’re tired and the baby won’t take a nap. Sometimes,

the world will be too much and you will need someone to intercede on your behalf. That’s why we must make a compact between us to build a better world. Finally, nearly everyone will take a job, or five, that will be a means to an end—a way to pay the bills. You will likely feel restless, and that’s when I hope you’ll take my advice to turn back to the words of Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Life’s most persistent question is, ‘What are you doing to serve others?’” Commencement is a beginning, the starting line. My failure the first time around can be blamed on many factors, and I had a lot to prove. Journalists are taught to go into a story with an angle, but to let it evolve organically. My matriculation at Jackson State University is so much more than a vindication of self: it is a testament to the power of collaborative education. I am proud of the work I have

accomplished, but I know my achievements and expectations have been elevated by work with my peers. There’s a reason I used this photo of my beloved media production team instead of a fancy graduation shot: the School of Journalism and Media Studies at Jackson State University is greater than our leadership, staff and faculty, or our partnership with the University of Mississippi. It’s greater still than the endless opportunities we have for handson learning alongside

Thee I love my dear ol' college home. I’m so glad that I chose Jackson State University three years ago to be my college home. I love my HBCU and wouldn’t want to call any other college my home but JSU. I came to JSU because I received a scholarship for the women’s track and field team as a 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, and High Jump athlete. Of course I didn’t want to just be an athlete, I wanted to be a student too. I’m a student first and then an athlete. I’m proud to say that I made it on the Dean’s List or President’s List every semester during my undergraduate collegiate time. I joined The Blue & White Flash because it was a requirement for one of my classes but I wanted to see if I really could get into the newspaper, so I continued participating. I love writing for The Blue & White Flash because everyone is always so happy and about his or her business. I had my own little section in the paper called “Tiger Spotlight,” that honored a student athlete weekly to give them a spotlight

of how there season going and what they expected from it. I also wrote about different things as well to broaden my horizons. My favorite memory at JSU would have to be during my sophomore year when I wasn’t having the best track and field season and I really wanted to give up but I didn’t. Sometimes when you’re at your breaking point, things turn around for the better. I just took some time to get myself together over spring break and came back as a better athlete mentally and went out with a bang at the outdoor SWAC Championship when I made it to finals in the open 400- meter dash. I want to thank The Blue and White Flash for giving me the opportunity to write with them during my time at JSU because of them I am a better writer. I’m glad to say that I met amazing people at JSU, for instance, my wonderful boyfriend, Deon Harris; amazing

professionals. The great strength of our department is that we have student-leaders who are willing to invest in each other’s education. The first friends I had on campus were Blue & White Flash staffers. Will Kelly, I hope your parents don’t mind, but I’ve adopted you. I needed the Flash at least as much as it needed me: it helped me learn more about JSU history, meet interesting people, and the community service hours I so desperately needed. I found that I learned

teammates (former and current), classmates, and random people I met as well. Even though I’ll be graduating early, I plan to start graduate school in the spring and get my masters in Sports Management. My ultimate goal is to work for ESPN as a sports anchor. I want to give a special thank you to

This last semester has been particularly meaningful because I’ve also had the chance to create powerful opinion work alongside my sibling Rhis. Finally, thank you, Shannon Tatum and Kierra Thomas: I don’t think it’s a coincidence that both valedictorian and salutatorian are Flash staff members. Everyone has weak spots, and mine is video. Dr. Almeida, you weren’t my adviser, but as I compile my materials for my portfolio and graduate school applications, I am grateful that you saw my potential for teaching and research, and urged me toward a future of analysis and academia. I find myself struggling to say goodbye, but then I remember that this is a letter of farewell: this is easier. Jackson State suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday night, falling to Nicholls 83-76. Khadijah Moore led Jackson State with a double-double, netting 21 points along with grabbing 12 rebounds. Radejah Woodson also scored in double figures for the Lady Tigers, netting 13 points. Jackson State got off to a slow start in this contest,

trailing 21-11 after the first quarter. Jackson State came out strong in the second quarter, outscoring Nicholls 24-18 to cut the deficit to 39-35 at the break. Jackson State would falter in the second half, being outscored 24-13 in the third quarter. The Tigers would not be able to recover. Next up, Jackson State will travel to Oxford, Miss. to take on Ole Miss at 11:00AM CT on Dec. 1.

Haboubacar Mutombo scored 15 points and Western Carolina held Jackson State to just 14 field goals in a 58-47 win in the first-ever meeting between the schools Saturday.

The Catamounts (2-4) held Jackson State (1-5) to just 14 of 50 from the field (28 percent), including 2 of 16 (12.5 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc. What’s more, the Tigers got just four points from its bench in 57 minutes of play. Mutombo was 6 of 9 from the field and Western Carolina was collectively 20 of 42 from the field (47.6 percent), including 7 of 17 from distance. Elijah Pughsley scored 10 points off the Catamounts’ bench, which contributed 22 of the team’s 58 total points. Paris Collins had 13 points on 4 of 20 shooting from the field, including 0 of 6 from beyond the arc for Jackson State. Maurice Rivers contributed 11 points.

The Jackson Touchdown Club held its annual Most Valuable College Senior Awards night presented by C Spire Wireless and senior defensive end/linebacker Javancy Jones received the award for Jackson State. The award is given to the senior on each team in the state of Mississippi that exhibits outstanding leadership on and off the field. Jones finished his career as one of Jackson State’s most decorated defensive players. At the conclusion of his senior season, the Macon, Miss. native finished just four tackles for loss shy of the FCS career record of 80. This season he was one of the top defensive players in the Southwestern Athletic Conference as he posted 82 tackles (3rd in the SWAC), 19.5 tackles for loss (2nd in the SWAC behind teammate Keontre Anderson) and 4 sacks (11th in the SWAC). He is a three time AllSWAC performer, a four time All-American and a finalist for the 2015 C Spire Conerly Award. In addition to his on-field accolades, Jones is an active participant in community service activities, as well as maintaining a 3.5 grade point average and is on pace to graduate. Jones is also a nominee for the 2016 C Spire Conerly Award.

All-Conference team University Communications

The Southwestern Athletic Conference recently released its 2016 Volleyball All-Conference team, and Jackson State University’s Lady Tiger Kianna Shelton was among those recognized. The Montgomery, Ala., native was named as one of two middle blockers to the All-Conference Second Team. This season, she

started in 31 matches for 102 sets played. She recorded 139 kills on 372 attacks for a .126 attack percentage. Shelton also recorded six assists, four service aces, 23 digs, 29 solo blocks, and 62 block assists. As well, she has recorded 203.0 points to average 1.99 points per set. The athlete ranks second on the JSU team in blocks per set, second in points, and third in receptions. She also ranks fourth in the conference in blocks.
