Rev. Dr. Kevin R. Murriel to speak at combined commencement

Reverend Dr. Kevin R. Murriel, a pastor, author, speaker, and 21st Century leader, will serve as the commencement speaker for the Jackson State University Fall 2017 Commencement, which will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 8 in the Lee. E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center (AAC). Dr. Murriel, a native of Brandon, Miss., currently pastors Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Ga. He is a biblical scholar and arguably one of the greatest visionaries and orators of this generation. He is a native Mississippian and a 2008 graduate of Jackson State University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, also being named as the 2008 “Student of the Year” for the College of Business. Dr. Murriel received his Master of Divinity degree from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology and his Doctor of Ministry degree from Duke University–also being named by the Dean and doctoral committee as the Degree Marshal of the 2014 doctoral cohort–the youngest person and first African American in the program’s history to receive such a designation.
An Elder in Full Connection in the North Georgia Conference, Dr. Murriel formerly served as senior pastor of Cliftondale United Methodist Church in College Park, Georgia. A dynamic preacher, avid reader, and social activist, Dr. Murriel’s research focuses on translating the methods of the Civil Rights Movement into a modern day strategy for social justice and racial reconciliation. His doctoral dissertation titled, Unveiling Racism: Racial Reconciliation and a Heterogeneous Model for American Christian Life, takes strategies deployed during the Mississippi Church Visit Campaign of 1964 to desegregate white churches and offers the Church universal a formula for racial reconciliation, hope, and progress. Since accepting his call into the ministry at age 18, Kevin has shown a significant record of helping people live with confidence by encouraging them to develop and maintain a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. He is the author of “Who’s Afraid of the Journey? 8 Steps to Help you walk in the Confidence of Christ!” which is a spiritual guide designed to nurture all people into a more confident and assuring
walk with Jesus Christ. A few of Dr. Murriel’s other endeavors include being President of Students In Free Enterprise at Jackson State (2008), leader of Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Jackson State (2008), organizing Empowered Youth of America at Trinity UMC (2007), coordinating the 1st Annual Youth Explosion in Brandon, MS (2007), mentor for the Youth Theological Initiative at Emory University (2009), Candler Coordinating Council 2nd Year Representative, North Georgia Conference Witness Team, North Georgia Young Clergy Task Force on Social Media, and Atlanta College Park District Youth Coordinator. He is an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated and is the creator of the Path 180 app, which is a mobile ministry app that includes sermons on demand, inspirational podcasts, writings on issues of social justice and much more. Path 180 is available free on the iTunes Store and the Android Market. Jackson State will hold a combined Undergraduate and Graduate Commencement Program. Many students are looking forward to the ceremony and life after JSU.
“Graduating means that I have been blessed by attending a fine establishment that has honored me with an education and that now I will become a participating member of society,” said Tyshara Mobley, a senior social work major from Biloxi, Miss. Kenya Hampton, a senior biology/pre-med major from Tchula, Miss. is also excited about graduation. “I am so very excited to be graduating next Friday from JSU! I am looking forward for commencement to see my peers and myself come together for a celebration that each of us have achieved!” said Hampton. Hampton was stunned to hear about the announcement of a combined ceremony. “The joint commencement caught me by surprise, however I think it’s gives insight for the undergrad students even more motivation to show that they can go beyond a bachelors and achieve anything that they imagine,” said Hampton. Some graduate students were not pleased with the announcement. “The combined commencement was a shock to me and the rest of my colleagues only because we were looking forward to a separate celebration.

Having two different commencements is just as important as showing the level of growth that I have executed throughout my scholastic career,” said Symone A. Stamps, a graduate biology major from Jackson, Miss. “No disrespect to the undergrads at all, but by having the celebrations together, including all 3 levels of education, Bachelors, Masters, Doctorate, makes things a little lengthy and takes away from the acknowledgement of each individual class. This causes the doctoral and masters graduates to almost get lost in the excitement of the undergraduates.” Stamps added, “My hopes for the future is that they keep the commencements a part but maintain the same peace and unity and acknowledgement throughout the school on each level of education. And continue to help uplift each other.” The rehearsal for the combined graduation ceremony will take place on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 9 a.m. the AAC. Word of advice: It is never too early to plan for your future COMMENTARY

“So, what are your career goals after you graduate from Jackson State?” I have been asked that question so many times throughout my years at
JSU. Recently, I was asked this question again while interning for a corporate business in my hometown. During this time, I had yet to start my junior year of college and had not given much thought about life after JSU. My boss asked me what my plans were after college. I told her how I was considering taking a year-long break from school after graduation. I told her that school was draining and that I think I deserved a break from it. I also had no clue what I wanted to get my master ’s degree in. As soon as I told her this information, I was immediately scolded. My boss informed me that there was absolutely no reason for me to not go straight into a master ’s program after I received
my undergrad degree. She explained that taking a year off would turn into two years and the next thing you know, I would be an old lady trying to get a master ’s degree. She reminded me that because I was an AfricanAmerican woman, it would be harder for me to find a job. I pondered on what my boss had told me and decided to go to other people in my life for advice. I talked to my mom, who is working towards her graduate degree after being out of school for over 30 years, my dad and one of my coworkers. They all told me that the best choice was to get my master ’s degree right after college. Finally, I saw things their way and decided I needed to make a five-
year plan. After college, I want to move back to Memphis and get an entrylevel job at a news station, public relations firm, or a corporate office. Once I feel like I can stand on my own two feet, I plan on moving out of my parents house and live on my own During this time, I want to work towards getting a Master of Business Administration degree or a master ’s in Journalism and Strategic Media from the University of Memphis. My alternative graduate school choices are Tennessee State University or Jackson State University. My goal is to get enough experience in the workplace so that I can relocate and get a better job. I want to move to Knoxville, Chattanooga, or Nashville. I am also not against moving to a
completely different state. I hope to accomplish this at least three years after graduating from Jackson State. I wish I could say I had more to add to this list, but I do not at this time. Honestly, that is perfectly fine because my fiveyear plan has constantly changed and will most likely change again. There is nothing wrong with not completely knowing what you want to do after graduation. However, as a junior, I have a little more time to figure things out. By senior year, I will be able to explain to people what I plan on doing after graduation. Undergraduate Recruitment sponsors 4th Annual Bike Drive

Christmas is the season of giving and Jackson State University’s Department of Undergraduate Recruitment is definitely in the giving spirit. Many children within the Jackson Metro area are not fortunate enough to receive gifts during the holiday season and Undergraduate Recruitment acknowledged this situation and decided they wanted to help give back in a major way. As the saying goes, “it is always better to give than receive.” The department is currently hosting their 4th Annual Bike Drive. The drive started on Nov. 17 and it will end on Dec. 16. Students and faculty are encouraged to drop the bikes off at Undergraduate Recruitment. The bikes will be donated to various schools within Jackson Public Schools such as Blackburn Middle School,
Pecan Park and Isable Elementary Schools. The goal is to donate bikes to at least 4-6 schools in the Jackson metro area. JSU is trying to target schools they feel need this generosity the most. Chaid Thomas, a JSU recruiter and organizer of the event, got the idea to hold a bike drive from his previous job. “This dream started with a seed planted in me by one of my former mentors and at the time, my Executive Director of Enrollment Management at Mississippi Valley,” Thomas said. “Nora B. Taylor believed in serving her community. She gave me my first opportunity to be a part of a bike drive and give back to the kids in the community in which we serve and reside in.” Thomas’ desire to give back to community inspired him to start a bike drive at JSU. “I knew that regardless of where I worked and what I
did, I would always give back during the holidays,” Thomas said. “I am just fortunate that I’m able to continue to do this bike drive with the help of my colleagues, students, friends and Jackson State University supporters. It is truly a blessing to be a blessing to others.” Every year the drive continues to grow. During a previous bike drive, former Jackson State University President, Carolyn W. Meyers, donated a garage full of bikes to the drive. The bikes were then donated to the Salvation Army. Thomas hopes that this year the amount of donations will be even greater. According to Thomas, they have collected over 10 bikes just from the Department of Recruitment alone. “It’s a team effort,” said Thomas. Recently, studentathletes in the JSU Division of Athletics donated 10 bikes to Clausell Elementary

School to reward deserving students for maintaining perfect attendance. The event was a community-service activity and an internal competition between JSU athletes and their sport to raise the most coins. Un d e r g r a d u a t e Recruitment’s bike drive
will end on Dec. 16. The department states that contributions from students and faculty would be greatly appreciated this holiday season. Bikes can be donated at the Undergraduate Recruitment building, which is located on 1342 West Pearl Street along the Dr. Robert Smith Parkway.

Soul Bowl week is a week of many events that lead up to the big rivalry football game between Jackson State University and Alcorn State University. Although the anticipated battle on the gridiron between the two teams took place on Saturday, Nov. 18, there was another battle going on in the kitchen. On Nov. 16, Jackson State held its inaugural Soul Bowl Cook-off to help fans from both schools get excited and pumped for the big rivalry game. This free event was held on the campus of Jackson State in Student Center Ballroom A at 5:30 p.m. The two participating chefs for this heated matchup in the kitchen were JSU’s own Chef Godfrey Morgan and Alcorn State’s Chef Eric Boudreaux. The hosts for the event were JSU students Jeromie Jones and Teezy Thomas. The food was tasted by a panel six judges for the culinary event, which was sponsored by Sodexo Magic. Brian Lee, the general manager of Sodexo, stated his reason for putting together such a tasteful event between the two universities.

“I’ve been the general manager here at Jackson State University for a little bit over a year now, but at the same time I use to be the general manager at Alcorn State University. I also know that between the
universities, how big this rivalry is and of course we are leading up to the game this upcoming weekend,” said Lee. “So I wanted to get the spirits back up and going and hopefully get the motivation going for both
sides,” said Lee. Jackson State President William B. Bynum Jr. showed his support for his university by attending the event. Bynum stated that he liked being visible and
showing support at events like this. “Whenever I’m on campus, I try to look at what type of student events are going on around campus. It is important to me to show that I am indeed studentcentered as you have heard me say throughout my time at Jackson State,” said Bynum. “This is a studentcentered thing to do so that students can have an opportunity to see and feel and interact with their university president,” said President Bynum. After preparing two main dishes for the panel of judges, the winner of the inaugural Soul Bowl CookOff was announced. With high anticipation, the honor of being the best Historically Black College/ University chef was awarded to JSU’s Chef Morgan. “It feels like I’m on top of the world,” Morgan said after winning the competition. “It feels good to win tonight, because this is my school and to win here tonight says a lot for me.” Lee hopes Jackson State can continue to hold this event annually and that next year the Soul Bowl Cook-Off will hopefully take place on the campus of Alcorn State and the Jackson State Tigers can take home another win in Brave country.

MC301 Contributor After multiple women accused famed Hollywood Producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct, there has since been a barrage of allegations levied against many other prominent men in the media industry. Matt Lauer, NBC’s “Today Show” host, is the latest prominent media personality to be fired for alleged sexual misconduct. According to an NBCNews report, Lauer
joins the seemingly evergrowing list of alleged sexual misconduct perpetrators that now include: Charlie Rose, “CBS This Morning” and “60 Minutes” host; Matt Zimmerman, Senior Vice President for booking at NBC News; Andrew Kreisberg, Executive Producer of CW shows; Glenn Thrush, prominent political journalist, actor Jeffrey Tambor, Minnesota Senator Al Franken, Louis C.K., Emmy-winning comedian and actor;

Since the Weinstein scandal was publicized in early October, many alleged victims of sexual assault and harassment around the world are speaking out. “People are coming out more because they are feeling more confident and know that they are not the
only one who has fallen victim,” said Deandre Barnes, a junior education major from Chicago, Ill. “Those who have told their story are inspiring other people to speak up.” According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), victims of sexual assault or harassment do not speak out for varying reasons. They know the perpetrator, making it harder to speak out. Other may be embarrassed or ashamed, afraid they will be blamed, or they do not want to relive the experience. Jovon Ellis, a senior biology major from Detroit, Mich., understands the impact rape can have on people, because someone close to him was a victim. “Women probably feel as if they’ll be held accountable because they are not treated equally in society,” said Ellis. “A woman’s word means nothing to some.” According to Antonio Horton, a counselor at the Latasha Norman Center for Counseling, sexual assault or misconduct on campuses
is a very underreported crime. “Students like to have a process they can trust. A lot do not know that they do have resources and rights if someone touches them, and there is something that can be done about it,” said Horton. The Latasha Norman Center helps bring more awareness to issues of dating and sexual violence, and encourages students to report what happens to them while also offering support. Title IX handles responsive action, which includes the reporting and initiating the no contact order. The victim has the option to obtain counseling at the Latasha Norman Center or off campus. According to Horton, students have three options when reporting a crime on campus. They can go to JSU’s Department of Public Safety, the Latasha Norman Center located on the 2nd Floor of the Student Center, or the Title IX office located on the third floor of Ayer Hall.

Male students discuss challenges of being young, black and gay MC404 Contributor “It’s R aining Men” by The Weather Girls blares in the background while a group of half - naked men prance around the room overzealously. That’s probably the image most people get when they get the think of gay males, mainly due to media portrayals. But this image is not the case for many in the gay community. There are many challenges that black males face in society. When you add in homosexuality, this can be a recipe for disaster. However, many black males are facing this adversity daily. It is not fair but discrimination does exist and it is alive and well in 2017. Although some people look at being gay or homosexual as wrong and immoral, some people are more than willing to accept it from women and not men. Justin B ennett, a senior histor y major from Jackson, Miss., believes gay men are judged more harshly than gay women. “Yes, I believe that in our society, unfortunately men are held to a higher standard than women are. Men are expected to be the masculine tough leaders and that is impor tant to people. For females, it’s expected for them to be feminine and reproduce,” said B ennett. B ennett believes students would benefit by having friends who have alternative lifestyles. “ They would learn a lot; that it’s okay to have a homosexual friend. They would learn that it’s okay to not be a rock hard man and that you can be in touch with your feelings. Just be you and you have nothing to worr y about,” B ennett said. According to the

JSU knocks off SWAC East Champ ASU in Soul Bowl

Jackson State University defeated Alcorn State University in the 82nd meeting of the Annual Soul Bowl game, with the final score of 7-3. This was the first time JSU defeated Alcorn at Veterans Memorial Stadium since 2011 behind the arm of former JSU quarterback Casey Therriault. The Tigers closed the season by winning three of their last four games under Hughes, who finished his second season at 3-8 overall and 3-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play. The Tigers finished 3-8 overall during Hughes first season. Alcorn State struggled most of the game to get the ball rolling as their only score came from a 19yard field goal by Alcorn kicker Corey McCullough in the first quarter. Alcorn Braves (7-4) overall and (6-2) in SWAC play. They will play in the last SWAC championship game in Houston, Texas this year. Senior linebacker Andre Lloyd from Yazoo, Miss., was proud that JSU pulled off a Soul Bowl victory. “I don’t want to say we played a perfect game because you’re never going

to be perfect in anything you do. We just wanted to play sound, disciplined defense like we’ve been coached to do and I couldn’t ask for a better effort from our team,” said Lloyd. Lloyd was 1 of 5 seniors that played on the defensive side of the ball. He also won the C-Spire Most Valuable Senior in the state of Mississippi award. Junior wide receiver Benjay Parrish from Ellenwood, Ga., lead the Tigers in receiving yards with 7 catches for 80 yards.
He finished the season with 22 catches for 235 yards and one receiving touchdown catch. Junior quarterback Jordan Williams from Memphis, Tenn., started this game with 14 of 26 passes for 130 yards in the air. Williams’ rushed for 29 yards on 11 carries on the ground. In the second quarter, sophomore running back Terrell Kennedy from Mobile, Ala., scored the only touchdown of the game on a 69-yard dash to the end

zone. This was Kennedy’s first rushing touchdown of the season. Kennedy is also the first JSU Tiger since 2013 to have 1,000 allpurpose yards in a season. “Senior Frank Carter from Tampa Bay, Fla., always tells me just to follow him. So we lined up on that play and he turned around and just kind of gave me a nod. I thought, Oh man, here we go,” said Kennedy about the scoring play. Senior linebacker Shawn Bishop explained the
defensive game plan for JSU. “Our number 1 motive this week was to stop the run. If we did that, we knew they couldn’t do anything. We had guys flying to the ball and tackling. Just a great defensive effort on our side of the ball in just not letting them score a touchdown,” said Johnson. Bishop is also a 2017 C Spire Conerly Trophy nominee. He finished the season with 74 total tackles, with 9.5 tackles for loss and a sack. He also recovered two fumbles. The Tiger’s upset win will not change the outlook of the SWAC championship. Alcorn will still face Grambling State. “In the state of Mississippi, this win is huge,” Coach Hughes said. “It’s in the grocery store, it’s in the mall. It’s JSU-Alcorn at the coffee pot. It’s playing marbles, it’s playing spades, it’s playing backgammon. To beat Alcorn is the greatest accomplishment that we can possibly accomplish. I told the guys that all the other games this season don’t matter. This one is the one that matters.” The Tigers will open up their 2018 season against the Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi on Sept. 1, 2018 at M. M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Meet JSU’s Sonny Thee Tiger, the man behind the mask

MC404 Contributor It is Saturday night, the crowd is pumped, the children are excited and the alumni are satisfied by the scenery of their alma mater. The band is in the background getting ready for the game to start and right before the football players come out, the mascot comes out with the cheerleaders, bringing pride and joy to the crowd.
Who is this person behind the mask? Who is this person that has so much energy to keep the crowd pumped? It is Sonny Thee Tiger! Jackson State University’s is Fernando Mitchell, a 20-year-old social work major from Magee, Miss. “I just love how the kids smile and how I light up their day,” said Mitchell, who admits this played a role in deciding become the mascot, a role he has been
doing since high school. One thing that inspired Sonny was watching former JSU mascot Wavy Dave (David Chambers) and he always aspired to be just like him. Finally, after years of hoping, his wish came true. If you do not know of Wavy Dave, he was JSU’s legendary mascot for 20 years. He started in the 1980’s and was a 1988 Jackson State graduate. The things he would do at the game had the crowd ecstatic. JSU fans waited for him and the “baby Tigers” every home game faithfully. In his honor, the mascot was named “Wavy Dave” after him. This year (2017) the name and mascot has changed to “Sonny Thee Tiger.” Many people were shocked when the mascot changed. Some fans and alumni were mad and some adapted to the change like it was nothing. Many want to know why the mascot has changed. The man behind the mask (Mitchell) said, “The suit that we had was falling apart with holes everywhere in it,
and it was very stinky. It was time for an upgrade. I went to Jackson State and they said they would get back to me and never did. So my father was kind enough to buy a suit for the school.” Sonny always grew up knowing all of JSU traditions, including that of Wavy Dave and said how much of an inspiration he was to him and how he would watch his videos to better himself as a mascot. According to Mitchell, the name of the mascot changed because of a request from the mother of Chambers. And that is how Sonny Thee Tiger was born. The mascot practices with the cheerleaders. The head coach of the team, Shirley Harrison, also has a say so when it comes to picking the mascot. “I love working with Sonny Thee Tiger since he has been here. He puts in a lot of hard work and dedication into his job. I think we couldn’t have picked a better person,” said Harrison. Sometimes being the
mascot of the school can be a tough job and a lot of pressure. The man behind the mask said “the crazy fans” were the toughest part of his job. Sonny admits that there are many perks as well. His favorite thing to do is dance with the “best band in the land”, the Sonic Boom of the South. With their exciting music playing during the games, it keeps him pumped up. How does Sonny deal with having so much attention on him at every event? He said “I feel great because I always have had attention on me, so I love it.” Mitchell said he does plan to pass on the “Sonny Thee Tiger” moniker after he leaves. The person who comes behind will have some big shoes to fill. “The advice I would give the (future) mascot would be to study the people before you and do your part. Don’t just be on the sidelines standing, get into the game because they should know it’s more than a game,” said Mitchell.
