on yer bike Following a sold-out tour in 2014, the Garmin Arenacross tour is back! For 2015, the event is going large throwing an eighth round in to the mix, with Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena hosting the penultimate round on February 14. The amazing spectacle will continue to treat fans to that unforgettable show experience with bar banging Pro and Youth racing and a world class line-up of Freestyle MX Riders to keep attendees on the edge of their seats. A host of riders have been confirmed for the 2015 tour – including Spanish Freestyle MX and Beat Boxing legend, Edgar Torronteras. He said: “Last year was amazing – the crowd was so noisy and Sheffield was just the best city on the tour – I’m back and I can’t wait to bring the roof down”.

After taking third place at Wembley last year, Aussie Daniel McCoy is set to return and challenge the championship again in 2015. He’s joined by British rider Steven Clarke on an all-new Hsqvarna backed team - all set to provide some explosive racing. With its killer mix of all-action indoor dirt bike racing, and gravity-defying Freestyle Motocross set to a pumping soundtrack and laser show, Arenacross is a non-stop white-knuckle ride! A short, sharp and shockingly spectacular event with huge triple jumps, murderous mogul sections and fast, banked corners - all designed to provide a high-octane sensory feast. After downloading an app which allows you to discharge from hospital, you return home to find your family silently watching ‘Taken 14’ – in which Liam Neeson has his spare back door key stolen by Parisian gangsters. SUZY DYSON

Suzy Dyson is the founder of INK – the Sheffield based Dance Company which represents positive, passionate and dedicated dancers. INK’s empire has grown dramatically – now providing dance classes, a crew training programme, crew dance performance opportunities, workshops and masterclasses - as well as providing clients with professional dancers for performances and events. We caught up with Suzy to find out more. What’s INK’s mission? INK is all about us ‘Making our Mark’ in the city in terms of dance; we really want to provide something new, fresh and current for Sheffield’s dance scene! We specialise in commercial dance - which we describe as anything you can visualise being used in commercial TV, music videos or shows. Basically, it’s dance designed for performance. I’d say INK is all about the people in it. It’s about learning and growing as dancers, as people, and loving what we do... Can anyone learn to dance? Yes – absolutely! I only started at 13 years old which some people might say is pretty late for a dancer! I remember being stood at the back of the class looking at the girls at the front who could pick up all the steps - and there was me, totally out of my comfort zone, uber shy and just… lost. But I stuck with it – and with time progressed at something I thought I could never do! When people join our classes and our dance crew I always see their potential - because they remind me of me when I started. Then bam, within a month, their progress is just amazing. ANYONE can learn to dance! You just have to love it, be patient, believe you can do it - and stick with it! What’s your dance background that led you Head to www.inkdancecompany.co.nr for more.

to launch INK in 2012? After spending some time in Los Angeles training intensively with choreographers that inspired me personally, on my return to Sheffield it was so apparent that INK was what the city was missing. I felt like young people here needed somewhere they could access dance that was current, yet different. I wanted to create a group that was positive, supportive and had that ‘family’ type vibe - as to me it’s so important to create a positive supportive learning environment. As a dancer in training myself, I was always travelling around to Manchester or London -even LA - to access the type of dance and choreography I wanted to learn… so I felt the responsibility to give the city INK. Finally, tell us about the style of dance you’re trying to encourage amongst both young and old... Commercial dance is what we specialise in - yet we do branch out into other styles which encourages our dancers to be versatile and open minded. Those who aim to be commercial dancers will understand that being versatile is key! Commercial dance is all about performance and intention. How you perform the choreography, whether it be the dynamic, the mood, the intention, the energy, the facial expressions – they’re all crucial! I guess most people will be familiar with this style as it’s the type of choreography you can see on TV shows, music videos or stage shows. Most importantly, we’re all about the enjoyment and having fun and teaching fresh and creative choreography.

Sheffield’s Got Balls One of the most iconic events in sport, The World Snooker Championship, is to remain in our fair city of Sheffield until 2017. Hurrah! The tournament was first staged at the Crucible in 1977 - so 2017 will mark its 40th anniversary in Sheffield. The event is worth over £5 million to the city and has a total audience of 285 million viewers. Cllr Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re delighted to keep the World Championship in Sheffield. This deal shows that Sheffield has real ambition. We are determined to use this partnership to help World Snooker to grow the game with new audiences and also to open up new global business opportunities for the city.” Barry Hearn, Chairman of World Snooker, added: “Snooker fans and players alike will be thrilled to hear this news as Sheffield and the Crucible are such an integral part of the history of the World Championship. Many thousands of people make snooker’s greatest pilgrimage each year to witness the intense and magical ambience that the Crucible generates. It’s marvellous to have the continued support of Sheffield City Council and to take the agreement up to the 40th anniversary and hopefully beyond!”

In need of a little love advice? Has the fizz gone out of your banger? Let the lord of love enter your soul...

Dear SP, I’m worried that I’ll be unable to satisfy my new girlfriend. You see, unfortunately, I am well below par in the love stick department. My skin flute is more of a peawhistle. My trouser snake is lacking its bite. In other words, I have a small penis. There, I said it. I’ve tried almost everything to rectify my proportional situation; I continue to give it a tug three times a day while praying to Krishna, the Hindu God of Love. Alas, it’s all to no avail! To stick the boot in, I’ve been informed by previous partners that when it comes to love-making, I’m about as useful as a one-armed trapeze artist with an itchy arse. My confidence is shot to bits and I’m desperate for some tips! Adam, Woodseats BRO, do you really think that this girl will appreciate having to spend valuable foreplay time patting your back and telling you not to fret as you sit on the edge of the bed weeping at your shrivelled member? I can guarantee that you won’t be satisfying anybody until you MAN UP and deal with the equipment you’ve been given. Most women view the common schlong in the same way they view heavily armoured vehicles: impressive to look at - but they certainly won’t relish squeezing one into their home garage. Also, the odds are, with your lack of prowess in other departments, you might actually take the time to listen and respond to what your lover wants - as opposed to going all Rambo III on her under the sheets. Love your weenie and it will love you – and hopefully many others. SP

LET THERE BE LOVE It’s served as an iconic feature of Sheffield’s skyline for at least 14 years now and, arguably, as long as 40 years. The ‘I Love you… Will U Marry Me?’ graffiti now lights up a bridge between the grade-II listed Park Hilll flats, and featured as the slogan on a t-shirt worn by Arctics frontman, Alex Turner. A BBC documentary discovered that the message was the result of a public display of affection in 2001 by a local

man called Jason towards his thenpartner, Claire Middleton. Thankfully, she accepted his proposal, but the pair never got around to tying the knot - splitting up three months later. Yet some Sheffielders still debate the veracity of this account - claiming that the original message had been there since the 1970s and a name was simply added later. ‘Tis a mystery, dear reader...

I Don’t Believe It... Read this column - and what happens next will amaze you! Ok, I’ll come straight. Nothing in this article will amaze you. It might entertain you. We could even find some common ground and briefly share a short but sweet writer/ reader bond. However, what I’m certain of is that you didn’t choose to continue reading because you were promised amazement in the title, because I don’t believe, dear reader, that you are a moron. My hope is that by reading the title of this column you recognised my parodying of an irksome trend on t’internet lately – even more irksome than gross overuse of emoticons or ‘share this to beat world poverty’ statuses. I’m talking about the scorn of preposterously hyperbolic headlines and links which have swamped social media. They’re called ‘click-bait’ (naturally, I’ve re-christened it ‘dick-bait’), and do nothing but serve to highlight the false, exaggerated, downright brainless world of internet surfing which we abide with today. ‘MAN FALLS INTO BEAR PIT… YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENS!’ Unsurprisingly, he gets eaten. It’s perfectly believable, and furthermore, if you’ve got a video of a man engaged in fisticuffs with a grizzly it doesn’t need embellishing one jot – a simple ‘MAN FIGHTS BEAR’ would be interesting enough to entice a click from me. Last year, CNN News joined the disaster by sharing a news story with the tweet: ’14-year-old girl

stabbed her little sister 40 times, police say. The reason why will shock you. (link)’ I think the internet officially went insane that day. As if it ever needed to be made official. I don’t know what annoys me more: the dull repetitiveness off seeing my social media feeds transformed into one big “WOAH… LOOK AT THIS STUFF” viral toss-fest, or the fact that internet users are treated like gullible numbskulls who’ll be hooked in by capital letters and combination of the words ‘most’ and ‘awesome’. Granted, some might be, but I make a conscious decision to avoid such content like the plague. You should too. Now I’m on a roll, here are a few more social media practices which grate deeply on my ever thinning strands of patience.

Previously all residents of the Sheffield Retired Greyhound Trust’s farm at Gosling Moor in Wortley, the dogs were chosen to front the campaign to promote greyhound adoption and are now spending 2015 with their own new families. John Gilburn, chairman of the Sheffield branch of the RGT, said: “The unique partnership with Henderson’s Relish has been a fantastic way for us to highlight the importance of greyhound adoption, showcasing the lovely dogs that are available for rehoming and how they make excellent family pets.” Bless. EXPOSED

a POlE nEw aDvEnturE This month, Exposed got into pole position – for a face flustering challenge at A Pole New Adventure. Would our intrepid journo end up in a spin? Read on, dear reader, read on… Words: Joe Moulam

A Pole New Adventure is Sheffield’s finest pole dancing and fitness establishment, who this month flung the gauntlet down in the direction of Exposed - challenging us to complete a full gruelling circuit around their daunting jungle of poles. My name undoubtedly came up in answer to the question “who in the office would look the most ludicrous hanging upside down?” - and before I know it I was turning down offers to borrow a pair of sparkly hot pants and on my way to the pole dancing premises on Carver Street. Rolling up in jeans and a shirt, I quickly scavenged some appropriate attire and A Pole New Adventure owner Gemma Hopkins showed me the ropes (or poles rather) while I showed my ability to fail at following basic instructions. I’m told that pole sessions are actually great exercise without seeming like it, and can be done by men and woman of all shapes, sizes and abilities. It’s a sort of freeform dancing - with elements of everything from ballet to For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk | 23

acrobatics incorporated. The circuit I was about to embark on, however, will most certainly feel like exercise - described to me as “intense”. Oh, joy. My challengers soon turned up in the form of Sarah, Amanda and Fran - who wasted no time in showing off some absurdly complex looking spins and holds. It’s safe to say this wasn’t their first time on a pole, so I decided my adversary for the challenge would be the last bloke who attempted the circuit – he only managed a measly twelve minutes before tapping out. Surely I could top that… surely? Stopwatch in hand, Gemma began the warmup jog around the room. Easy. This challenge was in the bag already. The circuit proper then began - with a two handed lift on the pole to pull yourself off the ground. The girls managed it with ease - but I struggled and got told that jumping is cheating. Boo. Sixty long seconds later, and my arms were

beginning to ache, but it’s straight into the next exercise - the deceptively tough ‘plank’. As I stared at the floor inches from my face and my limbs started to dislike me I had a moment of clarity - and realised that this challenge was probably not going to be as easy as I thought. Things from here become a blur of squats, poles and pressups as my face became more and more crimson and I was commanded not to vomit on Gemma’s pristine floor - but it’s a lot more fun than it sounds. Honest. My pole abilities also seemed to be improving - and I could actually hold myself in the air. By the last leg of the challenge I was shimmying myself to an exhausted victory as the first male to complete the circuit. Hurrah! The unfit intern prevails where some other bloke failed – and they barely caught me cheating! Chalk up a win for Exposed.

‘Tis the month of February in the fine, if not slightly nesh, city of Sheffield - and what better way to wave goodbye to those pesky January blues than by becoming acquainted with the infectiously catchy, swinging sixties rock and roll vibes of local lads, RedFaces.

RedFaces meet Exposed readers. Exposed readers meet RedFaces. There you are – done. Now introductions are over, and pleasantries exchanged, it’s time to really get the party swinging and give the Exposed In Session treatment to one of Sheffield’s most promising young guitar bands. Hi gents! It’s great to have you on board with Exposed In Session. The big question is: have you chosen what tracks you’ll be showcasing in the videos? Harry: I don’t know… have we? Great start! Isaac: Yeah, we said that we’ll be going for Katie Come Home and Office Girl. Harry: Suits me! Tell me a bit about Office Girl; I assume it to be quite self-explanatory in terms of song topic. Isaac: Surprisingly not! Charlie: We didn’t really decide what it was going to be about until we were halfway through writing the song. Isaac: It ended up being about lads – well, idiots – who get themselves into relationships too early and don’t do anything about them. That’s what we settled for in the end. Ok, I’ll steer clear of asking about personal experiences this early in the interview! Let’s move on to Katie Come Home, which received airplay from John Kennedy of XFM earlier this month. Isaac: It’s about Harry’s mum. You cool with that, Harry? Charlie: Ha, well, it’s not that sort of song. Isaac: Basically, we wanted to write a song with a bit of country-rock feel to it. We were putting it together back at Harry’s house and his mum – who’s incidentally called Katie – came home. Harry: It’s literally that boring. Isaac: Of course, none of the lyrics refer to Harry’s mother at all. I’d like to reiterate that point.

Words: Joseph Food Photography: Timm Cleasby www. thepicturefoundry.com Harry: Yes, can you put that in. Doom and Gloom was another track of yours which received great reviews; BBC Introducing Sheff listed it as one of their best tracks from 2014, and it received plenty of kudos from the Exposed team when we played it on our radio show. Are you starting to feel a bit of pressure to live up to expectations now? Charlie: Honestly, we’re just here to play and enjoy ourselves. We can be a bit oblivious to such expectations at times. Isaac: If people like us, then that’s absolutely great, and we’re happy to take things one step at a time. However, we’re not looking to try and make people adore us – well, Charlie is. Charlie: I like being adored. Issac: But, first and foremost, we’re just a band that loves playing music. That’s it. I must say, it’s quite refreshing to meet an indierock band that’s made the effort to look slightly dapper. Not interested in the leather jacket/ skinny jeans look, then? Isaac: To be honest, I’ve always liked the early Beatles/Shea Stadium sort of look. I don’t why; I think it just looks a bit better than the usual band attire.

Harry: Yeah, we just thought it was something a bit different. I think it’s good to look slightly dapper and make a bit of an effort when you go on stage. There are a lot of nods to late 50s/early 60s style rock and roll in your music. In fact, it pretty much encapsulates the sound. I assume this is a conscious decision? Harry: Yeah, I mean, our parents brought us up on a diet of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks etc. Charlie: It’s a bit coincidental that we all grew up listening to that music, but I think that’s why our sound comes together so naturally. Isaac: It’s not a bad diet to be brought up on, really. Plenty of people who’ve seen you say that you’re very much a band that needs to be experienced live to be truly appreciated. Is that where you feel most at home – onstage? Harry: Yes, I’d definitely say so. I think it’s harder nowadays to get a really good live band, and it’s important that younger bands really work at their live shows. Charlie: Any band can sound good in a studio, but live is a completely different matter. Agreed; and 2014 was a big year for the band in terms of some of the live gigs you played. Do you have any particular highlights? Isaac: Going down to London and playing was a mad experience. Andy: Yeah, playing Camden Barfly back in October was amazing. Isaac: It was our first real out of town gig, and to play it in such a legendary venue was brilliant. We went down on this packed bus – it was an interesting journey, put it that way. Do tell more… Isaac: We were on this packed, sweaty bus, and all we had was coke and crisps… Charlie: …Or should that be cigarettes and alcohol? Does that sound cooler?

Isaac: Anyway, we ended up getting off outside this service station and decided to play an impromptu gig. Unfortunately, nobody paid much attention to us and they drove off. It was a bit of a let-down. *Laughs* Harry and Charlie had a bit of an intimate moment when they fell asleep on each other’s shoulders back on the bus. Harry: Can we move on from this? Good idea. So what’s the plan for 2015? Harry: Carry on making music and play it by ear, I suppose. Charlie: We don’t really have a clue what we’re doing, so a plan’s out of the window! But we love playing live, which hopefully means there will be plenty more gigs. Isaac: Organised chaos is a perfect word for it. I confess that I had a nosey at your Facebook interests t’other day, and they were listed as ‘music, playing music, and… pandas’. Care to explain? Harry: Simply because we were idiots when we first started out. Andy: Charlie just randomly had a panda. Not a real one, obviously. Issac: Oh yeah! He had this soft toy panda in his garage when we used to go round and practice, and it kind of became our mascot for a bit. So that’s why the band has an interest in pandas. Exposed Meets Slow Club. Words: Emily Beaumont.

Hailing from Sheffield, home-grown duo Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor make up harmonising, scruffy pop duo Slow Club. Since forming the band almost ten years ago as teenagers, Slow Club have gone from strength to strength - performing all over the world and supporting globally recognised artists (Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons and KT Tunstall to name a few). The pair will be returning to our fine Sheffield shores for what’s set to be an epic sold-out gig at Queens Club Social February 28. We had a natter with Charles to find out all about it. Thanks for talking to us Charles. You’ll be joining us in Sheffield February 28 at Queens Social Club – looking forward to returning home? Absolutely! It’s always lovely coming back to Sheffield. Not only is it always a good gig but it gives us the opportunity to catch up with family and friends after being away. Plus, the gig has sold out, which is always a good feeling.

cover story

We’re friends and obviously with ten years of working together our friendship has gotten stronger. We have the same friendship group and have been through a lot together. I find it quite hard to imagine life without her.

It’s near approaching the 10 year anniversary of the formation of Slow Club. How’s that feel? It’s certainly a weird one. It really feels like it’s gone so quickly, definitely doesn’t feel like almost ten years, I mean we started when we were only 17. We can’t remember the specific date we started - so can’t have a specific celebration - but we’re just really happy to still be here making music. As you mentioned, you started Slow Club when you and Rebecca were just teenagers. How did you manage to stay motivated? Well, we were having so much fun making our music. We were just totally in love with what we were doing - without that there wouldn’t be any motivation or drive. It was just what we did as teenagers. In Sheffield and, I suppose in a lot of other cities too, there’s a big youth music scene - so it’s not something too abnormal. It’s just how we passed the time. How has your relationship changed over the years? I suppose it’s changed like any relationship. As you get older, you get a bit wiser, and your perspective of the world changes. Our working relationship is quite different to your typical working relationship. We’re friends - and obviously

with ten years of working together our friendship has gotten stronger. We have the same friendship group and have been through a lot together. I find it quite hard to imagine life without her. Very lovely! So has yours and Rebecca’s writing process changed since you started? I think it’s been changing constantly throughout time; we don’t have any particular formula. It’s hard to describe how our writing process works - we still can’t explain how we do it! We both just encourage each other creatively and share the vision… it’s difficult imagining trying to write without the other. I think, when it comes to writing, the harder you try coming up with something the more difficult it becomes… so we just like to go with the flow. So what’s been your career highlight? Ooh, that’s difficult. There was one moment which particularly stood out to me a few years ago. We were touring in America and driving up the highway from San Francisco. Anyway, we ended up stopping and watched the sunset on top of a mountain above the clouds. It was summer and the views were amazing. That’s a memory that certainly stands out to me looking back. In terms of gigs, our

cover story

last gig in London was probably one of our highlights. It was a really big and wicked show. We played the new record start to finish - which was great. For the last few years, when we’ve toured, we’ve toured with a whole band behind us - but for this show we went back to basics with it being just me and Rebecca. You’ve toured over the UK, Europe, the US, Australia and Japan. Where’s your favourite place to play? We always love playing Glasgow. Driving up to Scotland always gives me that holiday feeling - it’s a lovely drive with some amazing views. Japan, on the other hand, is just absolutely crazy - a completely different culture to what we’re used to. While we were over there, we were playing about three gigs a day for a week, which was really intense! The US is always good to tour, the crowds are always very responsive and enthusiastic, which I think is quite different to Europe who tend to be a little more reserved. When you tour you find that every city has its own different personality. Are you hitting up the UK festival scene at all this year? Oh yeah, definitely - full whack! Maybe Glasto again..? Ha, maybe, I’d love to play Glastonbury again! You’ve been described by a lot of the music media as being ‘anti-folk’. Thoughts?

Not a fan! It’s something that was mentioned by a music magazine when we were in our earlier years - and from then it just stuck. But we don’t consider ourselves as being ‘anti-folk’. We like pop, music from the 60’s and 70’s. We just like to make the music we make and don’t like having labels applied to it. Labels like that aren’t very helpful! Your latest and third album, Complete Surrender, did sound very different to its predecessors. Did you go into this album with the intention of making a different type of record? I think at that point we just wanted to make simpler records. We started using fewer layers and making the music more stripped-back. We also incorporated some brass and string which is something we hadn’t done before - which did give it a different sound to our previous work. We also concentrated a lot more on the lyrics for Complete Surrender; previously it’s something we’ve been a bit distracted from as we were focusing more on the sound but, for this album, it was definitely a focal point. Finally then, I know it’s a couple of years ago now, but a certain Daniel Radcliffe starred in the video for your single ‘Beginners’. How did that come about? Yeah, he’s a fan! At the time he was guest editing for Timeout magazine, and he was asked who he’d like to interview - so he chose us. We did the interview - and things just went from there!

Slow Club: The Facts The band released two 7” singles in 2007, ‘Because We’re Dead’ and ‘Me and You’, on Moshi Moshi Records. On September 1, 2008, their first extended play, ‘Let’s Fall Back in Love’, came out. They released a Christmas single, titled ‘Christmas TV’, in December 2008. Their debut album, ‘Yeah So’, was recorded by Mike Timm at Axis Studio in Sheffield and released in July 2009 - followed by their second EP ‘Christmas, Thanks For Nothing’ in December 2009. The band’s second album, ‘Paradise’, produced by Luke Smith (Clor), dropped on September 12, 2011. In 2012 ‘Beginners’, the final single from the album, was released. In spring 2013, the band went back into the studio with Colin Elliot (who has worked with Richard Hawley) and started recording their third album. The Style Files...

The only way to get through a long, rainy winter is to have some fun in the fashion department, with a dash of colour or mixed prints.

Hannah A bright jumper dress teamed with this sleek Topshop jacket make for an elegant winter look. We love the Michael Kors bag.

Lewis Go for smart casual with a hint of fun; this blazer is from a vintage market in Paris, and the scarf from Harry Potter World!

Lilu Be individual: boots in bright colours really lift a grey day, and Lilu’s coat proves that staying warm can be very cool.

Theresa Mix up some monochrome stripes and checks, and show off great legs with classy black tights or leggings.

Andrew Rebel against the gloomy skies and team a pair of brightly coloured chinos with a simple shirt and jumper like Andrew.

Dream Day They say it’s unlucky for some, but Follow Your Dreams Tattoos will be celebrating Friday the 13th in style - four artists, flash/ custom designs from £20 and opening till late! For three years, INHERITED® have been an essential part of Broomhill - with their sleek selection of independent clothing and a sharp eye for rare sneakers. Now, they’re making moves into the barbershop business - with INHERITED® Trim opening up right next door. “It’s always been something I’ve wanted to do,” said owner Josh Bonney. “As soon as we had the chance about four months ago, we knocked through, moved the clothes and sneakers next door and got the barbers going.” It’s a logical step for Josh, who wants to put the essentials for looking good under one roof. “Whenever I used to get my hair cut, I’d go straight out shopping and buy some new clothes. The two go together.” The newly refurbished interior looks slick - with stark white walls and exposed brickwork - and there’s a real relaxed atmosphere inside. A big screen in the corner keeps patrons entertained with FIFA while they wait, but usually they’ll be browsing the sharp range of clothes, jewellery and sneakers parked through the archway next door. “We stock lots of local stuff from independent stores, as well as from shops all over Europe,” continues Josh - and you can tell that he and all the staff at INHERITED® are passionate about what they’re selling. A customer points to a pair

of trainers on the top shelf and he launches straight into an avid description, reeling off facts about the colourful pair of Puma Disc Tropicals. It’s this passion for great stock that makes INHERITED® stand out - while Josh makes regular trips to London’s East End on the lookout for new independent labels and exciting designs. But now INHERITED® is becoming a brand in their own right - producing everything from INHERITED® caps and t-shirts to their own Vodka (made locally in Yorkshire),

candles and iPad accessories. What’s more, while weekends have always seen INHERITED® get a bit more rowdy with DJs and beverages taking centre stage, now they’re hosting their own night at Soyo dubbed IINHERITED® Sounds happening every last Friday of the month. They’re even planning to open an ‘INHERITED® Kitchen’ a couple of doors down. “It’s becoming a bit of an empire” Josh admits with a laugh. www.theinheritedshop.co.uk

We feel the need. The need for… another top guest tattoo artist at Good Vibrations. Masterful Manc lad Maverick will be acting as wingman at the Broomhill studio this month. We caught up with him to find out more... So, you’re heading to Sheffield for a stint at Good Vibrations. Looking forward to it? And what are you hoping to bring to the team? I am! Hopefully I’ll be able to bring something new to the Sheffield scene, not many people do what I do regarding the colour work, so hopefully it’ll be popular. I always try to push the boundaries of my own ability and I’m always working for that next level of what’s possible in tattooing. How did your journey to becoming a successful tattoo artist begin? It was a funny one, really. I was always on the outside looking in. I knew I wanted to tattoo and be an artist. I’ve always been an artist - I don’t think it’s something you choose. Regarding tattooing; my wife had a huge part to play. She worked with a lady whose husband owned a studio and she

introduced us. I felt like I was getting too old to continue as a graffiti artist, I had a daughter and another on the way, so it was time to step up and push my art and follow my dreams. It was difficult at first, doing an unpaid apprenticeship with a baby on the way, but I stuck with it and worked hard - I had good people around me. Thankfully, it paid off, and I’ve been tattooing for 6 years now. What the weirdest tattoo you’ve ever done? Thankfully, I don’t get many odd requests. I think the majority of clients that come to me know how I feel about tattooing and my art - so I only get serious clients that want serious pieces. I do remember a young lad wanting an ‘L’ on both butt cheeks. I’ll let you figure that one out.

How do the Manchester and Sheffield tattoo scenes compare? They’re both extremely good! There’s lots of talented artists in both cities that do various styles. I think there’s lots of similarities in the two cities, if I’m honest. Both very stylish towns with a young musical based clientele. A lot of beards and tweed (laughs). What was your main motivation to become a tattoo artist? I’ve always been creative, I’ve tried to work in a ‘normal’ job before - but it just didn’t suit me. I get bored very quickly and I have a desire to see a result at the end of a day - with tattooing I get that. I get to look at a piece I’ve finished and I get to go home happy knowing I’ve created something permanent. What’s it like sharing your name with the star from Top Gun? Awesome! The name was my old graffiti tag that stuck with me. It’s partly due to Top Gun and partly due to the meaning of it. I’m quite free spoken and sometimes I get in trouble from it. I never mean any harm to anyone, I’m not like that, I just don’t have a filter. If you could tattoo any celeb, who would it be? None, the majority are pompous pricks, I’ve tattooed celebs before and they expect the world. Obviously, not all are like that, but let’s just say I won’t be selling out as a celebrity tattooist. Tell us about your tattoos? I have the typical apprentice legs. I’m planning on a large scale cover-up blasting over my right arm which I was foolish enough to have done while I apprenticed. My full front is still blank but I’m hoping to take care of that this year. Is the pain of a tattoo worth it? 100%! Finally, what tattoo are you the most proud of? It’s probably my first one on my leg. It’d be unfair to clients if I picked one from recent pieces. It’s seriously shocking, but it was the first tattoo I did. I’ve had the word ‘Beginning’ put under it and, when I’m all done and washed up, I’ll have a final tattoo with ‘Ending’ next to it.

Next month, we’re taking on WORLD SQUASH CHAMP Nick Matthew for our Exposed Vs – so we headed down to his home away from home, Hallamshire Tennis & Squash Club, for a bit of background courtesy of marketing manager George Illidge. Words: Laura Garner. How was 2014 for Hallamshire Tennis & Squash club? 2014 was a very productive year for the club. We received the Yorkshire Tennis Club of the Year award by the LTA (The Lawn Tennis Association) which was achieved with the help of the tennis coaching team, The Hallamshire Academy of Tennis, who’ve done a fantastic job coaching our members and helping them improve. We also held the British Junior Open championship for its 20th anniversary, which was a great privilege, whilst Nick Matthew, our long standing member, had a great year winning gold at the Commonwealth Games, The AJ Bell Tournament and of course having his first child, Charlotte. To top it off, Johnny Marry, who’s also a member here, recently won a tournament in India - which was a huge confidence boost ahead of the Australian Open. Fantastic. And we understand you had some refurbishments recently? Yes, we received funding from Sport England to improve our facilities and ensure we develop as a club. A major part of the funding was the addition of LED lights to our courts. We also added underfloor heating to all our squash courts as well as air conditioning to the gym. This was a great bonus for members in the summer. All of this helped the club progress as well as keep our members happy - which is the overall aim of the club. We plan to continue

to develop and achieve our aim of having the best facilities in Yorkshire - if not the country. What’s it like being the home of squash champ Nick Matthew? It’s a huge privilege. We see one of the best athletes in sport playing and training regularly - when not abroad or in tournaments. This allows members to see the qualities of a professional squash player first-hand, which reflects positively on the club, whilst giving a huge boost in terms of promoting our excellent squash facilities to the people of Sheffield. And how’s the next generation of squash players looking? Very strong. They’re outstandingly enthusiastic! In order for squash to become successful, the young players must be active and focused on their performance - and all ours are. It’s also important for players to enjoy playing - and all our youngsters have a ball. I’d say, in around five years, we’ll definitely see some high quality players coming out of the Hallamshire. Our colleague Phil is going to be taking Nick Matthew on for our next Exposed Vs. How do you see that panning out? Bearing in mind Nick will be handicapped in some way… I can see your colleague having to take the See www.hallamshiretennis.co.uk for more.

next couple of days off! I think he’ll have a good run around and the term ‘headless chicken’ may be used a few times. I imagine he’ll be given a large advantage to make it a little fairer. It will definitely be an interesting game! Have you had a lot of new members joining to keep the classic New Year’s resolution of keeping fit? On the gym side, yes, definitely – especially as we offer a no joining fee in January. We also see a lot of players that haven’t played for a while and want to get back into it. How’s 2015 looking for the club? There are exciting developments happening - but you’ll have to wait and see. It’s all under lock and key at the moment. It’s an exciting time to be involved with the Hallamshire… Finally then, what would you say to anyone thinking of taking up squash? It’s a very high intense sport - and I’d definitely say get involved. It’s very enjoyable. There’s a large social side; particularly at the Hallamshire, which many people don’t realise when they think of squash. You’ve also got its partner sport, racquetball, which if you’re not the most able player may suit you more. Again, it’s a very fitness based sport - and here at the Hallamshire we can help you keep active and healthy whilst having fun!

Smoke-King Touring the UK competing in Man Vs Food challenges, Professional Eater and Bodybuilder Randy Santel attempted the Smoke Barbecue big burger challenge in Sheffield recently. For nearly four years, Randy Santel has competed in body transformation and food challenges throughout the States, and has now ventured across the pond to take on the UK. Upon hearing about Smoke Barbecue’s Man Vs Food challenge, Randy aimed to add Sheffield to his list of conquests, confident that he would be able to beat the 22 minute record set by a previous champion. Here’s how he got on… The Challenge Eat a burger stacked with four beef patties, smoked brisket, pulled pork, cheese and onion strings, plus fries, a jar of slaw and a corn bread muffin, followed by two pints of milkshake. If done in under 30 minutes, you get the £25 mega meal for half price, if you

set the new record, the meal is free - and the best time of the week will get £100 to spend at Smoke. The 17th challenge on his tour (with over 20 more to go), Randy claimed this would not be the most difficult he’d endure, but that it looked hearty enough. A few psyching up routines, and a nod to his YouTube audience on camera, and Randy began. To say what we witnessed was impressive is an understatement. Clearly a professional, Randy devoured the meal with ease, in just ten minutes and five seconds. It’s also worth pointing out that without commentary he would have done the challenge in less than ten minutes... Tricks of the trade? Speed is essential, as is a good soundtrack. Curious to find out what the motivation music was that was pumping through Randy’s headphones, we hazarded a guess at some sort of heavy metal, or at the very least the Rocky soundtrack. As it turns

AnchorAge Inspired by East Coast American dining, this new venue from The Harley crew opened its craft beer doors in August 2014. Taking the place of Fitzwilliam and West in their West One location, Anchorage have managed to strip back the modern interior and re-fit in a creative way to develop a tranquil feel to the open space - with industrial pendant lighting, natural wood fixtures and dedicated art exhibition space (3rd Rail’s ‘Artist Beer Visions’ currently adorns the walls showcasing fictional beer label artwork from the likes of Tom J Newell and Mr Gauky). Positioned across a trio of levels - the lower floors are more laidback focusing on the deli menu with in house cured meats, cheese platters and sandwiches such as salt beef piled onto rye bread with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and mustard (the Reuben) - the top floor is a dedicated restaurant dining space seating sixty-five. Diners can even choose their own individual lobster from the tank to be cooked on the grill. Becoming known for their focus on meat (the hanger steak, a cut usually kept for the butcher’s table, has become a best seller), the new menu has just launched - so look out for the likes of Amish chicken (rubbed in garlic, paprika and seasoning before being baked in milk and Gnudi) and light balls of ricotta and parmesan rolled in semolina flour. The draught beer offering rotates frequently, focusing on US and UK keg - think Victory, Weird Beard, Wild Beer Co and Black Jack breweries. There’s a dedicated stout line, with recent beers including Siren and Mikkeller’s captivating collaboration Beer Geek Daydream. In addition to the keg lines are two hand pulled ales generally showcasing local beers (Skye’s Edge, Abbeydale, Kelham Island). If you happen to be in town after work, take advantage of their cheeky drink offer on the ales at £2.50 a pint (4-8pm Monday to Friday). Love Is In The Air For Pickled Pair Conscientious consumer seeks independent shopkeeper for long-term relationship… By now, most of us will have seen the till results from the main supermarkets. You may have heard that Morrison’s big man has been fired for not bringing in the booty, and that Aldi and Lidl are doing a roaring trade. But, do you also know that our dairy farmers (and many other growers and producers) are increasingly being milked dry when it comes to supplying the large supermarkets? That thousands of tonnes of produce is condemned to an edible scrap-

heap because it’s not the right size? And that in order to remain competitive and deliver shareholder value, supermarket price-wars rage on and on? So, how come then, with such a depressing picture, is it that Sheffield has some of the best independent shopkeepers around? And that us lot simply love using them? Starting this month, Pickled Pair will stepping out around our best independent food shopping areas and finding out just what’s so special about these glorious retailers - starting with Sharrow Vale Road.

Follow @Pickled_Pair to keep up with her adventures.

cubana Ties The Knot Not sporting his trademark mask after a show at Sheffield’s Motorpoint Arena, Sid ‘Ratboy’ Wilson of Slipknot fame enjoyed a spot of jazz, vintage port and tapas at Cubana in Leopold Square. Spotted by an eagle-eyed member of staff who was a fan of the band, Sid was so impressed with the performance of resident jazz pianist, 70 year old Ralph Salt, that he presented him with a €100 tip at the end of his set. Ralph Salt said: “Sid was a real gentleman and couldn’t have been further removed from his Slipknot persona. He was very appreciative of my performance and even asked me to play my choice of sentimental song as an encore. I thought a Joe Cocker song was the perfect choice given his recent passing and Sid listened intently throughout. It’s fair to say I was presented with the biggest tip I’ve ever had in my career - and it couldn’t have www.cubanatapasbar.co.uk

Make The Most Of It! THE BEST SEASONAL PRODUCE AND WHERE TO GET IT IN SHEFFIELD BY @PICKLED_PAIR. Blood Oranges Tell me more: Just when you think winter is set in, and fruit and veg life is getting pretty dull, out pops the blood orange. Yes, you can juice them –a gorgeous, zesty shot – but why not also use them in winter salads, or as a partner with a squidgy, velvety panna cotta, or even as Polpo does, in a Campari and blood orange cake. Whatever you choose, blood oranges are bound to raise winter spirits. Where do I get it? The newly located Barra Organics on Sharrow Vale Road has several varieties, or try Beanies of Walkley and Nethergreens on Oakbrook Road.

Oysters Tell me more: Although available throughout the year, oysters are usually better in the winter months when the water is colder (outside their spawning period). Some say eating raw oysters is a bit like battery-licking for grown-ups - salty, tangy and with a full metal jacket. Try them with a squeeze of lemon and a touch of chili or tabasco. I personally like to pair them with bubbles too (a hangover cure from living in Belgium). Where do I get it? The new oyster bar at JH Mann on Sharrow Vale Road offers you a briny delicious oyster to eat-in for £1 a shuck. Simmonites on Division Street and Cod & Cockle in the Moor Market are also a good bet. Beetroot Tell me more: We’re nearing the end of what is a fairly long season for British beetroot. Totally under-rated – most likely because we were introduced to this lovely root via our grandma’s pickling jar bake it in a salt-crust, roast it, slice it raw in salads and even juice it (rather delicious with carrot and orange). My favourite right now is to salt-bake and puree, then serve warm with some fresh goat curd and a drizzle of olive oil. Where do I get it? Most fruit and veg shops will have good earthy beetroots in stock. The goat’s curd you can get from Porterbrook Deli on Sharrow Vale Road. If you hanker for the pickled stuff, and don’t fancy doing it yourself, Hedgerow Preserves do a good one and it’s stocked in many a Sheffield independent. Are you a Sheffield producer or supplier? Let us know what seasonal produce you’ll be rearing, growing, making or stocking, and we’ll showcase the best here. The Mediterranean 271 – 273 Sharrowvale Road, Hunters Bar, S11 8ZF Tel: 0114 2661069 // www.mediterraneansheffield.co.uk THE PLacE For over three decades now, The Mediterranean has been serving up the best of Spanish tapas, fresh fish and seafood to the people of Sheffield. Situated in in the heart of Sharrowvale Road, in close proximity to the busy bars and pubs which bustle each weekend, the restaurant had never looked so inviting as we fought through the bitter January cold. Once inside, we were graciously met with both a warm room and a warm welcome from the staff. THE FooD First things first: the vino. We opted for the French Merlot Le Versant – a classic full bodied, fruity wine which was just the ticket for a relaxing evening out. To start, I could look no further than the king prawns pan fried in garlic butter and lemon juice, while my partner – a seafood fanatic – opted for the monkfish skewers. My starter arrived looking sensational, bathed in a parsley and white wine sauce which stole the show. The monkfish skewers were tender, enjoyable and declared delectable by my partner. Our waiter had established a friendly rapport with us from the off and

applauded the lack of mess I made from the prawns. A proud moment. Onto the mains – Beef Fillet Tournedos-Rossini with Peppercorn Sauce and Roasted Salmon. The beef was tender, the sauce creamy and the taste delightfully rich. My partner praised the salmon, which was served on a bed of spinach with a tasty beurre blanc pesto sauce. Our ever-attentive, but never intrusive waiter, topped up our glasses as we chatted and ate. We couldn’t resist indulging in dessert after seeing the menu featured our personal favourites: chocolate parfait and lemon tart. The parfait was a real winner, both light and tasty. With both dishes devoured, there was nothing left but to bid a fond farewell and head back out into the cold night… but we still managed to retain a warm spot for the wonderful staff. THE VErDIcT Our expectations for the evening were more than met - with fresh, tasty food, attentive service and relaxed atmosphere. The Mediterranean shows that with age comes experience. And, when it comes to casual dining and simple, high quality dishes - they still live up to their good name.

Whilst a simple bowl of Sugar Puffs is all that’s needed to get most at Exposed HQ moist for the day ahead, mere mortals in life sometimes require a little extra pick-me-up for their peckers. With that in mind, we proudly present our super-sexy guide to the best/worst aphrodisiacs out there. Let’s get it on! Words: Joe Moulam.

Tiger Penis

According to the Chinese, there’s nothing better to ramp up the romping than a good ol’ Tiger penis. While there’s not much science to back up the claims, traditional Asian knowledge says that eating tiger tail is not only an amazing aphrodisiac, but will also cure erectile dysfunction! The wild willy is usually eaten in a soup, but some particularly creative types like to grind it up in wine. Obviously there are ethical issues in poaching an endangered species for their manly bits but, if you can control your conscience, then the best way to get your other half in the mood is apparently a meaty black-market tiger penis.

Watermelon

There’s nothing sexier than a large green ball – but, besides its alluring appearance, watermelon also has some real aphrodisiac science going for it. The summery fruit contains the nutrient Citrulline, which is converted in the body to Arginine, which in turn relaxes blood vessels to treat erectile dysfunction. But, while eating watermelon could be seen as sexy – it’s a tasty fruit with bright pink flesh, held in the hands as seeds are ejected through puckered lips – the reality is that eating Watermelon is usually a sticky, awkward mess. A better idea might be to serve the frisky fruit up as a classic starter, paired with some salty Prosciutto or Parma Ham.

Avocado

Another green, slightly phallic fruit, avocado was known by early Aztecs as “āhuacatl” – meaning “testicle”. This may have been because of its shape, but those crafty early South Americans might have been on to the massive amounts of vitamin B6, which increase production of male hormones and could possibly raise the randiness.

Chillies

We’re not talking about the sexy slop that is a good chilli con carne here, but the spicy little peppers. Known to release endorphins, chilies can produce a pleasant and energising sensation, making them perfect for a pre-pump snack - while the flushed face and slightly swollen lips that come from a particular hot habanero can look reminiscent of a lover ready for a romp. Hot stuff.

Honey

Honey is a naturally sweet and sensual food, which already gets it some aphrodisiac points, and then there’s the whole ‘male bees serving the queen’ angle too. Honey also increases testosterone production in men, which can help to get them in the mood for some lovin’ – and the mineral boron present in honey aids the use of estrogen in women. A big amount of honey could also increase levels of nitric oxide - which is the chemical released in blood during arousal. 58 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

FOR THE LOVE OF

BEER Jules Gray takes us through her 10 beers to look out for at next month’s Beerx 2015!

Exposed beer blogger Jules Gray spent seven years at a large multinational brewery in the UK. She started out working in sales and procurement and went on to a project implementing new software for the brewery - which resulted in her developing filtration and brew plans for up to 40,000 barrels of beer a week! Jules left the brewery to follow her dream of starting her own business with her partner Will; thanks to the excitement of the current brewing landscape - a scene she’d seen bubbling, which grew and exploded in a wealth of exciting new breweries - and Abbeydale’s popular craft beer shop Hop Hideout was born. Fanatical about beer, Jules has been a member of the British Guild of Beer Writers for three years. Her shop and writing are her ways of sharing her beer obsession with the public. But it’s not just about beer itself – it’s about the people behind it and the stories, histories and provenance of those beers and breweries. Following her role as a judge at the event’s national beer competition in 2014, we caught up with Jules to get her considered take on ten beers to look out for at this year’s BeerX festival – featuring a range of breweries and beer styles from a list of over 250 award-winning British beers.

BeerX takes place at iceSheffield on March 20 – 21 featuring live music from the Everly Pregnant Brothers and The Bootleggers, plus street food stalls, tasting and blogging events, along with all the final 6 Nations rugby matches on a giant screen. For more information and tickets visit beerx.org and follow @SIBA_BeerX. For more from Jules, check out Hop Hideout - hophideout. co.uk / @hophideout and @beer_revere.

10 BEERs FOR BEERx BREWERY: Blue Monkey, Nottingham BEER: Infinity + 1 pale ale, 5.6%, cask BACKGROUND & CHARACTERISTICS: This Nottingham brewery, which started in 2008, has focused on using the powerful Citra hop in this pale ale, which, as its name suggests, has a strong citrus profile (think mango, tropical fruit and lime). This punchy beer has a massively dry hopped taste and delivers a moreish, easy-drinking result. BREWERY: St austell, cornwall BEER: Big Job IPA, 7.2%, cask BACKGROUND & CHARACTERISTICS: I love this one! Roger Ryman, the brewing director, is an outstanding brewer and was awarded the All-Party Parliamentary Brewer of the year in 2009. He’s the man responsible for the brewery’s flagship Tribute Ale. It’s an exciting brewery with a history dating back to its incarnation as a Victorian ‘tower brewery’ in 1851, which is now home to a museum. Big Job is dry as a bone and packed full of Cornish barley with huge amounts of the Citra, Centennial, Cascade and Nugget hops, which complement each other with notes including lemon, spice, peach, lychee and grapefruit. This beer has previously won gold in the Best Pale Beer Imperial IPA Europe category at the World Beer Awards. BREWERY: Ilkley Brewery, Yorkshire BEER: The Mayan chocolate chipotle stout, 6.5%, cask and keg BACKGROUND & CHARACTERISTICS: This unusual beer is a favourite with our regulars at Hop Hideout. It’s smooth and velvety with a fiery kick - but it ends up subtle and warm. The beer was inspired by a Mayan recipe and uses Galena and Bramling Cross hops, which pack a double whammy of spicy, blackcurrant flavours. Keep an eye on this brewery for some exciting US influenced brews thanks to their new American brewer, Christa Sandquist. She joined in 2013 after a stint at Harviestoun Brewery in Scotland, which we’ll be looking at later. BREWERY: Moor Beer company, Bristol BEER: Old Freddy Walker, old ale, 7.4%, cask BACKGROUND & CHARACTERISTICS: People love this, it’s a real favourite old ale and one of beer writer Roger Protz’s 300 beers to try before you die. It’s become a cult classic, from winning Champion Beer of Britain back in 2004 to taking silver for the Barley Wine category at the CAMRA Champion Winter Beer of Britain national competition in 2014 - drinkers are still loving it a decade on.

of more pared down British hops. Flavours in this beer include orange blossom, pine and citrus with a subtle malt background from the Maris Otter malts. BREWERY: Wild Beer co., Somerset BEER: Madness IPA, 6.8%, keg BACKGROUND & CHARACTERISTICS: Wild Beer Co’s American brewing director wanted to showcase his beloved West Coast IPA beer style. Madness delivers an intense tropical punch bowl of aromas. Madness is all about the hops - with masses of late and dry hops to ensure a powerful citrus backbone. Wild Beer Co is an exciting, experimental brewery who is big on barrel ageing and using wild yeast cultures. Definitely one to watch as they continue to up the innovation stakes in the British brewing landscape.

It’s a rich, dark, full bodied old ale that uses Bramling Cross hops and is a combination of pale lager, crystal wheat and black malts delivering a roasted finish. Moor is one of the first breweries to proudly talk about their beers being unfined, with a strong focus on natural beers, which they think delivers more flavour and character. BREWERY: Brass castle, Yorkshire BEER: Burnout smoked porter, 5.8%, cask BACKGROUND & CHARACTERISTICS: Brass Castle was founded in 2011, so it’s still a young brewery. They’ve developed rapidly in a short space of time and are now based in Malton town centre in a bigger brewery space producing 130 casks of beer a week. They also have their own tap room, bottle and home brew shop on site. Burnout is a great smoked porter with beech smoked malts. It has bonfire and chocolate characteristics with thick bodied caramel notes, a savoury smokiness and roast bitterness. There’s so much to taste and experience in one mouthful! BREWERY: Totally Brewed, Nottingham BEER: 4 Hop Men of the Apocalypse, IPA, 5.2%, cask BACKGROUND & CHARACTERISTICS: Nottingham’s Totally Brewed was founded by Rob Witt, a landscape gardener turned micro brewer! He only launched in February 2014 but has already made his mark on the brewing scene. 4 Hop Men of the Apocalypse is an English style IPA - less hoppy than American IPAs due to the use

BREWERY: Siren craft Brew, Berkshire BEER: Liquid Mistress red ale, 5.7%, keg BACKGROUND & CHARACTERISTICS: This is a bright red ale with flavours of burnt raisins and biscuit - balanced by the West Coast American hops that give a peachy spark. She’s a mysterious, seductive and disarming beer! I always look to Siren for fascinating, thought provoking beers; making this a brewery to look out for. BREWERY: Thornbridge, Derbyshire BEER: Jaipur IPA, 5.9%, keg BACKGROUND & CHARACTERISTICS: Thornbridge is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and is brewing Jaipur X - a triple IPA with a stronger ABV. This is the Bakewell brewery’s flagship, multiple award-winning beer. It’s proved hugely popular as a pack leader in the British craft beer resurgence and has further captured global attention. Jaipur is heavily citrus dominated with a smooth, soft finish and is known for its pale colour and character. BREWERY: Harviestoun, Scotland BEER: Schiehallion, lager, 4.8%, keg BACKGROUND & CHARACTERISTICS: Harviestoun is best known for the popular Bitter & Twisted golden ale. Schiehallion is another staple from their core range and delivers exactly what you’d want from a lager. It’s crisp, refreshing and light. The brewery was founded in 1983 by home brewer Ken Brooker, who started off in his shed with cobbled together homebuilt kit including a mash tun formerly used to make jam! Schiehallion has won gold multiple times in the Speciality Beer category at the CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain awards.

Hammer and Pincers

Where: Ringinglow Road, Bents Green, Sheffield, S11 9RH Tel: 0114 262 0759 One of the best things that happened in the recession was that certain pub groups gave their landlords a bit of a freedom in the knowledge they needed that inside expertise to help turn the business around. And that’s just what’s happened at the Hammer and Pincers in Bents Green, which is now just the sort of pub the locals of an S11 postcode demand. Firstly, there’s the excellent selection of real ales (Moonshine, Doombar and Wadworth 6X were all on when we stopped by) - plus there’s great value with Greene King coming in at just £2.25. The food has also seen great improvements – the 2 for £8 on selected mains (Mon-Fri) has been a big hit with customers and the recently launched breakfast menu starts at just 99p. Tidy. That said, the pub is about much more than just good value. It’s very much at the heart of the local community with a raft of regulars aged 18-80 and plenty of events throughout the year. They’re also particularly proud of their beer garden which houses over 100 and will be given a bit of facelift next month, ready for the spring. All in all, the Hammer and Pincers is a local that’s worth travelling to. www. thehammerandpincers.co.uk

There’s no shortage of entertainment either, with regular Tuesday night quizzes, videogame consoles and major sporting events on the telly. Luke Jermay, the sensational English magician, mentalist and writer, is heading to Sheffield City Hall this month. Now living in York, Luke studied Magic and Magic Theory in his youth, and has since performed in more than 20 countries. He can read your mind, predict your future, and tell you more about your past than you know yourself. It’s sure to be a fascinating, eye-opening performance – so Laura Garner caught up with him to find out more. Tell me about your background in magic? As my parents believe in the supernatural, I grew up with many unusual things around me, such as tarot cards. Going into my teenage years, I rebelled as every teenager does. I began to think it was all ridiculous and I began looking into scepticism. This led me onto conjuring, which I still have a strong interest in now, as well as Dynamo who I think is excellent. In my early 20s, I returned to what I thought of previously as crazy. Was it a shock when you realised you could read minds? It was a very gradual process; I wasn’t hit suddenly by lightning like in the movies. I very much worked towards it. I work in an organic fashion, I work based on feelings. I use challenges to solve puzzles and I definitely tend to connect the dots in situations rather than take a logical approach. In shows I like to keep my audience guessing - some acts may be mind tricks and some may be genuine mind reading. Have you ever got into any trouble doing this job? Oh, every day! I’m joking - I’m not that bad! I know when to toe the line if I sense that an audience member is becoming uncomfortable with

what I’m revealing. People can get very shocked with what I uncover. One memory in particular comes to mind. There was once a woman in the audience - very slim and pretty and I got a huge sense that she was pregnant. It turns out she was! The funny bit was that she hadn’t told her boyfriend yet - so he found out there and then. It ended very well with an emotional scene! Something else that springs to mind - there was once a couple in the audience, and I knew that the male had a question to ask that night. He then revealed a ring in his pocket and proposed to his partner there and then on stage! I’ve never got into any huge trouble - but my shows are always unpredictable. No two shows are the same – it’s impossible for me to plan as I never know what’s going to pop up. Tell me about your favourite trick… Without revealing too much from the show, one person will have a big choice to make, and the audience witnesses whether or not this choice is made. Another funny one is where I ask the audience to think about an embarrassing secret from their past and read their minds - I’ve had some crazy anecdotes! So… how do you do it? Can you actually read minds, or does a magician never reveal their secrets? I can tell you I certainly can read minds. I believe everybody can - but some chose to ignore it. I bet today you’ve already done it 50 times - in your office you’ve changed your behaviour based on a feeling from someone, definitely, it’s all about intuition. We make predictions everyday based on the information we receive. When you get up in the morning, you choose your outfit based on a prediction of the weather.

Cool Hand luke

Being able to read minds is based on intuition rather than logic. I’m thinking of a colour - what is it? You’re thinking of green (correct!). That was too easy - change the colour. Now you’re thinking of blue (correct again). It’s possible over the phone – but, to get deeper into somebody’s mind, I need to be connected to them physically in some way. There are also techniques that can be used for predictions. For example, the most common colour somebody would initially think of is blue. I guessed you’d be thinking of green because, as a writer, you have an individual

perspective on life. Can I just add I sense you’re worrying about a conversation to be had tonight? Just to let you know, it’ll be fine. Wow. So, if you could read anybody’s mind for a day, whose would it be? That’s a great question - nobody has ever asked me that before. It’d probably be David Cameron to find out all the dirty political secrets. Or maybe somebody from TOWIE that’d certainly be simple and funny! If I really thought about it though I’d probably choose somebody influential… perhaps Tom Waits the

given me an amazing life. I’ve met people I never could have done - and I wouldn’t change it for the world. If you could have one other superpower, what would it be? Oh, definitely teleportation. It’d be great to instantly get to where you want to be - no more trains or buses! You recently released your book ‘Making Mind Reading Look Real’. What top tips would you give to budding magicians? That book is dedicated to helping magicians improve. My top tip would be to look into the history of magic. There are many stories and shows of mystery from the past, often carried out by the masters. There are many different styles of mind reading and hundreds of years of history. If you look into the past, you’ll definitely pick up a few clues.

musician - he’s very admirable. To be honest, it takes a lot of effort to have this power, it’s not as if I walk past somebody and instantly know what they’re thinking. I don’t think I’d want to be able to press a button and just hear what everyone is thinking - that’d be crazy. What do you expect from the people of Sheffield? And what can they expect from your show? I’ve always had good shows in

Sheffield - and a lot of great memories. You guys make a great audience. Northerners seem warmer and more up for it, in a sense. I’m definitely looking forward to it. I’m sure you’ll be a fun crowd - which makes shows a lot better. My promise is that I will tell you what you’re thinking… and I WILL predict your future. Would you rather not have your gift? Is it sometimes a nuisance? It can be. To be honest though, it’s

Josie Long hits Sheffield’s Studio theatre this month - so we asked the mighty Mark Perkins to have a chat with her. Despite the fact she’s one of the best stand-up comedians in the country, he seemed more interested in the fact that she’s studying A-level maths… Stand-up comedian? A-level maths? How did that come about? I haven’t done any maths since GCSE. I found I was doing Sudoku puzzles and loving them, but began to think I was wasting my life away. At the same time though, I realised the reason I loved them was that I didn’t really do anything like that anymore, solving maths or logic puzzles - so I decided I’d carry on my maths studies, do the A-level course, and also get something out of it at the end. I’m enjoying it - but it is so hard.

Ok, let’s get onto the comedy. It must be ten years since I saw you in The Lescar, and things have moved on. These days, comedy tours all seem to have to have a name. Your tour’s called Cara Josephine. How did you choose that for a title? It’s the name of my niece, and I love her to bits, and really wanted to do something for her as a gesture. I felt I wasn’t perhaps the best role model for her; I can’t drive, I haven’t got my own house, so I thought this would be something I’d do for her to show her how much I really love her. I don’t necessarily agree that you’re not a good role model. One of the things I enjoy about your comedy is how it’s clearly about things you care about and want people to think about. You don’t just take on a persona for the night; all of the material seems to be things you really care about and want your audience to think about… Thanks, yes, I hope that comes across. The ideas for my shows are just a compilation of thoughts and ideas I have all the time. I keep notes as a companion to my life, writing things down, keeping

track of what I’m thinking, and when it comes to preparing a new show I book a few nights to just talk in front of an audience, record it, and see what works. I then constantly tweak it until it becomes a show with a proper narrative. One passion is a charity you’ve started, The Arts Emergency Service, which sounds very interesting... It supports young people who want to go into artistic, creative careers, but are from backgrounds where they don’t have any financial privilege or connections and don’t necessarily have much support from family. We want to support them to go into a career that they actually want to do, rather than the careers that they feel they have to do. And by art, I mean anything in the art or humanities field. We want to be a long term source of support for them, help them go to university if necessary, give them the confidence to choose what they want, and provide a network of connections that their more privileged counterparts would have. People should be able to use the time at university for social and intellectual development - which would make for better people and make everyone happier. Simon Amstell: To Be Free

Sheffield City Hall // February 18 // £18 Following sold out residencies in New York and London, Simon Amstell is embarking on his fourth international stand up tour – To Be Free. With intense vulnerability and honesty, Amstell explores weighty themes of joy, love, death and regret with a tender comedic eye that sees him gently mocking social norm until it seems utterly ridiculous. Amstell’s stand-up is in equal parts endearing and witty - making it a must-see for comedy lovers. www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

Cuckooed

The Crucible // February 26 // £16.50 Mark Thomas stars in a tale of spying and deceit. This true story, told in a comical tone, tells of how the BAE systems resulted in spying on a comedian. Portrayed in an intriguing tone, this production is told via interviews with friends, colleagues, activists and journalists to examine the extent of the betrayal. Although essentially a comedy, this production has a subtle important message regarding the consequences of being spied upon by a corporation under the sanction of the state. Delivered by an award winning comedian, it’s well worth a watch. www. sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

Due to an apparent typo error in the poster however, a few musical dedications to his next door neighbor, Ken have also been added. Shuttleworth is best known from Radio 4’s John Shuttleworth’s Lounge Music Show as well as the TV series ‘500 bus stops’. The University will host a photo exhibition Monday 23 to Friday 27 February to celebrate the lives and achievements of the LGBT community in Sheffield. Emerging onto the House scene in 2010, T Williams marked himself as a breakthrough act with a difference. He’s forged a signature sound that blends grime, dubstep, bass music and the evolution into house. Disparate and alluring amidst typical house vibes, his funky sound strikes a note that immediately draws your ear. After playing one of Mixmag’s top 10 club nights WAYF in 2011, Maribou State began seeping into the souls of listeners. Being a London duo putting out an ethereal type of bass music, inevitably they’ve drawn comparisons to the music of Disclosure. Supporting the likes of Eats Everything, B.Traits, Maya Jane Coles, Ben UFO, Breach and Citizen and moving from garage, to house, to disco with ease, Squarehead has established himself as a firm Plug favourite. After initially making his name as a DJ, Squarehead has proven time and time again he is capable of keeping the biggest crowds moving. Exposed meets prides.

words: Emily Beaumont.

With over ten years of experience in the music industry behind them, Scottish synth-pop band Prides really hit it on the mainstream music scene last year. Their performance at the closing ceremony of The Commonwealth Games propelled them into the spotlight - and 2015 is gearing up to be the band’s biggest year to date. We had a natter with frontman Stewart ahead of their gig at The Leadmill to get the low-down. you’re kicking off 2015 with another uK tour, the final date being in sheffield February 14. are you looking forward to it? Yeah, I’m definitely looking forward to it! It’ll be Valentine’s Day – you gotta’ spread the love! We last came to Sheffield when we supported Foxes on their UK tour

last year, and a lot of my friends went to Sheffield University, so I’ve had a few messy nights out! i can imagine! What can the folk of sheffield expect from a Prides live show? It’s energetic and fun. A big thing for us is that people have a good time - so there’ll be plenty of dancing! 2014 was a really big year for Prides. any personal highlights? We were really lucky - 2014 was absolutely amazing. Picking one thing is really difficult! We certainly hit a lot of milestones as a band. There was obviously closing the Commonwealth Games which was incredible, headlining the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds, supporting Blink-182 in Brixton, our first UK headline tour which sold out -

it’s all been amazing! you’ve certainly been busy! When you played the closing ceremony of Commonwealth Games, it was viewed by about 7.5 million people. Was it intimidating playing such a huge show? It was in a way. Obviously there were the millions of people viewing, and it was a massive opportunity, but I was probably more nervous about supporting Blink-182 at Brixton. At the Commonwealth Games we were only playing one song - so how bad can it go? It’s only three and a half minutes! do you have any funny tour stories to share with us? Well, we’re all quite tame on tour these days! Unfortunately a lot of our funny tour stories involve getting drunk and being sick. We recently played in The

For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk Alps, which is bizarre, I know. Anyway, I attempted to clean up a pile of sick with snow, but the sick then froze and we ended up driving around for about three hours with this pile of frozen sick. that’s pretty grim, stewart! so, you’ve had a few EP’s out, are there any plans for a full album? There’s going to be one later this year, before summer. We’ve also got another single out soon - but that’s all I can say for now! When did you get picked up by island records? Me and Lewis were signed as a previous band about 4 or 5 years ago, and we didn’t really know what we wanted to do, so it didn’t really take off. We then started Prides and were lucky enough for them to still want us and sign us! your music has something of an 80’s vibe. are there any bands or artists who’ve influenced your sound? Tons! All sorts. Like you said, we have a big 80’s influence, bands like The Cure and Tears for Fears played a big part in our sound. Vocally and lyrically, I’ve been influenced by artists like Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. But as well as the 80’s we like to bring a bit of fun. Growing up I listened to a lot of pop-punk like Blink-182 and Jimmy Eat World. When we’re writing we try and think about what will sound good live - so we like to write big songs that will fill a venue. The Killers are really good at that. other than the tour, the single and the album, is there anything else you have planned this year? you certainly sound busy. Other than that we’re going to try and hit as many festivals as possible. We’re not sure which specific ones yet - you’ll have to wait and see!

Mark Ronson Uptown Special

Mark Ronson has treated fans to a preview of ‘Uptown Special’ - his brand new fourth album. This collaboration features a distinctive mix of classic Funk, RnB and Hip-Hop – making it impossible to listen to a single one of these popfriendly tunes without having a boogie. Oozing authenticity, listeners are treated to a surprise appearance from Stevie Wonder in ‘Uptown’s First Finale’. The opening track mixes beautiful instrumentals with classic vocals to make for a wonderfully soulful intro. The tone quickly switches to a slightly more upbeat style as rapper Mystikal features in ‘Feel Right’, revealing the slightly grimier side to Ronson’s music and boasting offthe-scale groove factor. In true Ronson fashion, there’s a dynamic range of styles on show: one cannot find a larger juxtaposition between the gruff barks of Mystikal and the delicate vocals from Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, for example. Including a jointly released track-by-track guide from the man himself, this is a well thought out, experimental album that’s a sure-fire success. As quoted by Ronson himself: “I’ve made something so good that people don’t actually think it’s me.’ An album postitively bursting with catchy tunes that will be sure to stick in your head for days. It’s feel-good, vibrant and accessible to all. Laura Garner 7/10

PumPin’ On mi StereO Slaves – Sugar Coated Bitter Truth

I must confess that the angst-ridden, delightfully endearing racket of punk duo Slaves hadn’t previously besieged my ears until they broke onto Radio 6 with ‘The Hunter’. Ears immediately pricked by the sound of something raw and angry, I, like many others, grasped at it thirstily, parched from staggering around a desert of ‘safe’ bands with well-polished tracks and not a deal to say. I was led to their 2012 album – ‘Sugar Coated Bitter Truth’ – which tears through nine tracks at breakneck speed, combining sharp lyrics with passionate delivery and frenetic drumming. Best track is ‘White Knuckle Ride’, which features the ingenious line: ‘I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees.’ Overall, it’s gobby and cynical enough to provide a raw edge, and chaotically enjoyable enough to appeal to listeners for whom punk garage is usually out of their comfort zone. Gaz Coombes Matador Gaz Coombes has come a long way from his fresh faced Britpop days as the frontman of Supergrass. 2012 saw the release of his debut solo album ‘Here Come the Bombs’ that was praised by critics, and now he’s releasing follow-up ‘Matador’ – an album of heart-on-sleeve dreamy synthesiser ballads. Sonically, the album is a balancing act between the electronic, mechanical (even harsh) synth sounds and the delicate patter of more traditional rock band sounds. Standout track ‘20/20’ captures this balance, with snatches of fingerpicked acoustic guitar floating over a brittle electronic bass line that crackles with distortion. It’s a full and captivating sound, with choruses that explode magnificently; and although it sounds anthemic that doesn’t mean there’s some stadium rock formula followed here. Songs unfurl themselves languidly with no obligation to follow any well-trodden path. ‘The English Ruse’ threatens to descend into cliché, and my first-listen notes read “if this ends with an effing double chorus I’m turning the album off”, but it doesn’t – a fiery, dissonant synth explodes out of the lull and flails wildly. Overall, it’s an exciting album, and ‘Matador’ proves that Coombes has got a lot more to offer than just exuberant Britpop and massive sideburns. Joe Moulam 8/10

Black Rivers Black Rivers Being 2/3 of Doves, there’s a clear tint of the Cheshire band’s sound in Black Rivers’ debut eponymous album. However, Black Rivers have ultimately manufactured a sound and style that stands alone. After loving the first single from the album, ‘Voyager 1’, expectations were definitely raised. The band look set for big things with some belting gigs already lined up, including a special slot for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds plus live shows with Elbow. Their introductory track – ‘The Ship’ – was featured in NME’s On Repeat column and was also selected as a Q Track of the Day. ‘Voyager 1’ remains the stand-out track from the album; however the whole record is still an enjoyable ride. Admittedly, you may have to play it several times to fully appreciate the works, but once you’ve listened a few times, you’ll find a certain depth to the album to be appreciated. There’s a hypnotic nature to their music, which draws you in with each succeeding track. Emily Beaumont 7/10

Exposed Meets Black Rivers.

Black Rivers; the new band from Andy and Jez Williams - who you may recognise as being 2/3 of number 1 band Doves. Since their hiatus in 2010, the twin brothers had been working on individual projects before forming their new outfit. With their eponymous debut album due out this month, as well as their upcoming tour, 2015 looks like its set to be a huge year for the pair. Emily Beaumont had a chat with Andy about the album, their upcoming gig at The Leadmill and twin telepathy. you’re dropping by sheffield on February 9 for your headline tour. are you familiar with our fair city? I am! Especially The Leadmill! We’ve played a couple of times. My older brother went to Sheffield College and was in the band ‘The Junk’ when me and Jez were about 14 - they were apparently quite big around Sheffield. They used to play the Sheffield gig scene a lot, especially at The Leadmill, so I definitely feel I’ve got a connection with the place. For those not in the know, you and Jez were formerly members of doves. obviously, doves were very successful - with two number one albums and a loyal fan base. is it difficult essentially starting again? It is, yeah. The music industry is so different now; it’s a lot harder to sell records as everything is done online. I mean, the internet is a blessing as it allows

anyone to put their music out there, however it makes the finances of building a band much harder. I feel sorry for younger bands just starting out - as you’ve got to be so committed. We’re just so blessed and lucky that Doves fans have stuck by us and are still interested in what we’re up to.

There’s definitely more positives! A lot can get left unsaid, and we have the same reference points, so we can write material much more quickly. The negatives, I suppose, are the type of negatives you’d expect with a sibling - like the way he eats an apple for example.

your debut album as Black rivers is due out in February. Can you try and describe your sound to us? Well, it’s a bit more psychedelic than Doves, in my opinion. It’s more electronic. We wanted to write a record that you can listen to from start to finish - which is something that a lot of people are looking for now. Hopefully, we’ve done that.

a lot of scientific studies have shown links between twins and telepathy. are there any telephatic communications between you and Jez? I’ve read that - but I don’t think there’s anything like that between me and Jez. I can sometimes sense when he wants a drink or something, but I’m not sure that’s telepathy!

When did you decide to put the band together? We sort of drifted back together. The last Doves tour was in 2010 - and since then we’d just been focusing on our own projects. We didn’t decide suddenly we wanted to form a new band - it just happened naturally. Me and Jez started kicking a few ideas round and developing songs. There was no real structure to it. After we’d got a few songs penned, we went out looking for management, so it was essentially starting right at the beginning.

as well as the headline tour, you’re also going to be special guests for noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. do you reckon you’ll get up to much mischief with noel on tour? Everyone’s been asking us that! I reckon Noel’s a bit quieter now, he’s a bloke in his 40’s after all, he’ll probably play the show, have a cuppa, and go to bed.

you and Jez are twins. Positives and negatives of working with your twin?

i’m not so sure about that! By the sounds of it, you guys have got a pretty busy year ahead, anything else we should know? We’re really hoping to hit the UK festivals this year - we just can’t wait to get on the road and let people hear our songs.

Initially known as ‘the sweet taste of darkness’, it didn’t take long before Black Honey became one of the most exciting and talked-about bands of 2014. They decided to employ a change of tack from the off; no photos of the band were released, interviews were scarce, and only TV themed artwork adorned the cover of their releases. The mystery was somewhat solved when they released an image of the band with their wellreceived debut EP. With a sound described as 60s-style, hook laden noise pop, the band have been touted by NME and others as ones to keep an eye on for 2015. They’re set to play a banging set at The Rocking Chair on February 4, and judging on their recent packed-out secret show in their hometown Brighton, there’ll be plenty of interest in the show. MEllow YEllow Big changes at Yellow Arch this month – as the legendary recording studio launches its all new bar and gig space. The striking facility will be the first fullylicensed recording centre in the country - boasting three bars and catering for a whopping 500 music fans. “It’s all part of an ambitious 5 year plan to expand the Yellow Arch brand,” co-owner Andy Cook told us. “We’re currently only around 2 years into the project – and this expansion will be another wonderful addition to the blossoming Kelham Island/ Neepsend areas. For us, it’s simply about contributing further to the arts community. It’s all very exciting – but just the tip of the iceberg.” Open 5pm-2am, the bars will be divided into three individually themed areas (along with a courtyard) - featuring some kooky local touches. “We’ve used reclaimed wood that was pulled from the River Don after the flood and managed to source some amazing elements from places such as the Middlewood and Netheredge hospitals.

Exposed Meets Hudson Taylor. words: Emily Beaumont. Easy on both the eyes and ears, Irish brothers Alfie and Harry of Hudson Taylor are taking the folk scene by storm. Having honed their rockabilly harmonies the oldfashioned way, busking in their hometown of Dublin, they gained massive recognition through social media – going from acoustic cover band to number 1 artists in their homeland. With their debut album out in March, and an upcoming show at Plug on February 5, we thought it was time for a chat with Alfie to get the low-down. you’re going on a massive 22 date headline tour, are you looking forward to it? So, so, SO excited! It’s the biggest tour we’ve ever been on - so it’s going to be amazing. We can’t wait for everyone to hear what we’ve been up to. and you’re stopping by sheffield this month. Have you been to the city before? Yes, we played Sheffield University a few years back for a coffee house session. It was probably one of our biggest audiences to date. We were only supposed to be playing the small room - but the turn-out was that big we ended up playing the bar. We’re really looking forward to coming to Plug for the Feb show. speaking of which, what can sheffield folk expect from your set? We’ll be playing the new album ‘Singing for Strangers’ back to back. It won’t be out in the UK at that point - but we’re hoping to give people their first listen live. We’ll have a band, bassist, drummer, keyboard player - there’s going to be lots of energy. the album’s out in March. What can you tell us about it? The first half of the album is very acoustic, sort of back to basics, as it’s the type of music we played when we began. The second half was mostly recorded live. We like that element of imperfection - and the energy of the music really communicates. The album is made up of 12 songs which we hand-picked from a back catalogue of about 100 - we’ve really spent a lot of time writing songs. There’s also a lot of bonus tracks which we couldn’t bear to not

include. One of them features Gabrielle Aplin. We figured that people had been waiting for an album long enough - so we wanted to include as much as possible. you released the track listing on your website a few weeks ago. Which tracks should we be paying special attention to? Ooh, that’s very hard! I’d say, for me, my favourite track is probably a song called ‘Don’t Tell Me’. It’s a song about marriage equality in Ireland. We’ll definitely be playing it live, though I’m not sure whether it’ll end up being a single. The track ‘World Without You’ is also a favourite. Hudson taylor began in 2011, and you released your EP Battles in 2012. it ended up reaching #1 in itunes ireland and #14 in itunes uK. Pretty impressive stuff… It was really, really crazy! Me and Harry have grown up singing together - we used to always get forced into singing at family parties and weddings and stuff. I think it all really started in 2008 when we were on holiday and started playing covers. We were doing that until about 2010, just covering songs and busking, putting stuff up on YouTube and Myspace. Then in 2011 our manager contacted us and Hudson Taylor began. When we got that number 1, it was absolutely mental, we couldn’t

believe it. Saying that we’d been number 1 certainly did us a lot of favours when we were trying to get signed. is there any sibling rivalry? (Laughs) No! We get that question a lot - but there really isn’t any sibling rivalry. We’re not like the Gallaghers - there’s no brotherly feuds. We’re best mates really; it’s nice whenever we’re going through something difficult we’ve always got the other. When solo artists are touring it can get a bit lonely on your own… but we’ve always got each other. I suppose we argue about food - but that’s about it! We don’t live together, so I suppose that helps… if you don’t mind me saying, you’re a pair of rather good looking gents! do you get a lot of attention from female fans? [Laughs] I suppose so! There’s always girls at our gigs, and I suppose we do get some female attention, but nothing too creepy! 2015 looks like it’s going to be a massive year for Hudson taylor. other than the tour, and the album, what else have you got planned? Festivals! They’re always mad, and so much fun, so we’re hoping we can hit the festival scene this year. We’ve played Reading before - so we’d like to go back there. It’d be nice if people came to watch us.

THE ORDER: 1886

BATMAN: ARKHAM KNIGHT

This PS4 exclusive puts you in Victorian-era London... with a twist. Instead of worrying about boys getting stuck cleaning chimneys, people are generally more concerned with the half breed monsters trying to take over. Set in an alternative history, you will be able to use advanced weaponry and such (the likes that shouldn’t really go hand in hand with the Victorian era) against these monsters and rebel groups to sustain some form of order in the most broken version of London ever.

Set after the events of Arkham City, Arkham Knight puts Batman in a very strange position - with no major villain to keep him occupied, others such as Two-Face, Penguin and Harley Quinn come to the same realisation that the Batman is vulnerable and it should be their mission to combine their efforts to finally kill him once and for all. On top of all that, the psycho known as Scarecrow wants some of the action and threatens Gotham City with his unique toxin. As you can imagine, they’ll be lots to do in this bigger version of Gotham City.

HALO 5: GUARDIANS Releases: TBa 2015 FoR: XBoX one

Halo is in a very strange place right now, most people tend to hate the new direction it’s going or welcome it with open arms. Perhaps you’re somewhere in the middle? Either way, the storyline looks to be a strong one - with the world in peril and Master Chief wandering alone with a mark on his head from one Agent Locke, who knows what 343 Industries will throw at us. The multiplayer beta has now finished and has generally received good feedback. There’s also a few new weapons and abilities here and there, so that’s something else to look forward to.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA (Working Title)

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Without sounding like a fanboy, I don’t think any Zelda game has been bad - so the announcement that Link will be making another adventure on the Wii U made most of us quite excited. Said to be less linear than previous instalments, The Legend of Zelda will promote more freedom and a much larger overworld, complete with many places to explore, whether it be on foot or whilst riding Epona. Although not much has been shared, the small glimpses into this game should make people buy a Wii U if not already.

Open world environments seems to be a recurring theme in games that haven’t necessarily had them in the past, and you should be happy about it. This will give Metal Gear Solid a whole new feel whilst keeping the elements of stealth, action and espionage right at the helm. The Phantom Pain is perhaps the most anticipated game of 2015 set after the events of Ground Zeroes, Venom Snake is at it again sneaking around trying to put an end to a new threat on the world.

Big Hero 6

The Interview With the furore that erupted over Christmas surrounding the US release of The Interview, one would be forgiven for expecting something truly biting and satirical from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s latest; particularly given the razor sharp edge of their last outing, 2013’s This Is The End. Sadly, The Interview is far from the contemporary update of Spies Like Us that you’d hope, and - following a terrific first act that promises something of that calibre - is really all bark and no bite. The Interview follows vacuous talk show host Dave Skylark and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Franco and Rogen) who seek to regain their credibility when they secure a live interview with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un (Park). Being taken seriously in their

field however soon becomes the least of their priorities when - under the watchful eye of the CIA - they are tasked with assassinating the reclusive world leader. To be fair to Rogen and Franco, The Interview requires nothing performance-wise that the pair have not successfully mastered in roles past - particularly in This Is The End - yet both are let down by a poorly thoughtout script which peaks at the concept level and impresses only in satirising the entertainment industry. Besides a hilariously unhinged performance from Park; very little about the film works once its leads have reached North Korea, with one unfulfilling story beat after another inspiring only disinterest in a film which simply ceases in its pursuit of its own first act hilarity.

Still riding high on the wave of Frozen mania, Disney’s animated follow-up sees them teaming with Marvel for this unapologetically fun and heartfelt adventure. Big Hero 6 follows teen genius Hiro, who - devastated by the loss of his inventor brother, Tadashi - teams up with his brother’s fellow inventors and final creation - a medical bot named Baymax . Effortlessly walking the line between colourful family adventure and super-powered revenge tale, Big Hero 6 is a thrilling 3D escapade; a poignant exploration of grief, that just happens to double as an animated superhero movie. With a note perfect voice cast (particularly Scott Adsit as Baymax), a stunningly realised visual playground and breathtaking set-pieces that rival those of the highest calibre liveaction blockbusters, there’ll be very few not taken in by the likes of Hiro and his pals.

Predestination Based upon the short story All You Zombies by legendary science fiction author Robert A. Heinlein, this timetravelling character drama follows a temporal agent (Hawke) as he sets about capturing the criminal who has defined his career. However, the mysterious agent is unable to take down his quarry alone; and enlists the help of a young woman named Jane, whose past may be even more mysterious than his own. The sort of cleverly timey-wimey tale you so rarely see nowadays, Predestination can best be described as a character-driven thriller take on the likes of The Butterfly Effect. Hawke delivers the sort of gripping and tense performance we’ve come to expect from his recent repertoire, but Predestination undeniably belongs to relative unknown Sarah Snook - whose turn as Jane may just be one of the most intriguing onscreen presences you’ll encounter this year. As has become typical in years gone by, this year’s Oscar nominations were fairly predictable in advance of their ceremonious unveiling; the Best Picture candidates primarily filling the assigned and clichéd roles we’ve come to expect from the academy. Not that there weren’t a couple of surprises. Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel shared the title this year for the most nominated film, although The Theory Of Everything and The Imitation Game each managed a fair number; with Theory’s Felicity Jones facing off against the superb Rosamund Pike for Gone Girl (which was tragically snubbed) and Wild’s Reese Witherspoon, and Imitation’s Kiera Knightley arguably the only deserving candidate bar Birdman’s Emma Stone for Best Supporting Actress. Michael Keaton proved the most surprising - and deserving - nomination for Best Actor for his turn in Birdman, whilst both Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) and Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) somehow feel like

obligatory nods, particularly in the case of Bradley Cooper - whom the Academy seem determined to either turn into an eventual Oscar winner or the most consistently statueless loser since DiCaprio. It ultimately became the snubs however that would define this year’s nominations. Despite near unanimous critical lauding; The Lego Movie was overlooked near entirely in every category, including (bizarrely) Best Animated Feature. Also noticeable was the aforementioned Gone Girl, and Selma - which gained itself a Best Picture and Best Song nomination, but was otherwise unfairly ignored. What we would appear to have however is, like last year, a face-off between the contemporary and the traditional - with the traditional this year looking decidedly British. But can the flashier likes of Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel really squash the traditionally beloved style of The Imitation Game and The Theory Of Everything? We’ll find out on February 22.

Man Of War

Starring in The Absence of War, Exposed caught up with Reece Dinsdale. Words: Emily Beaumont.

After having access to the inner-workings of the Labour party during the 1990’s, writer David Hare penned his comedic, satirical and biting political play; The Absence of War. Set during the 1992 elections, The Absence of War focuses on charismatic Labour Party leader George Jones, a man without a university education, but a real man of the people desperate to get into number 10. We had a chat with Yorkshire lad Reece Dinsdale, who plays George, to hear all about it. Hi Reece, how’s it going today? I’m alright thank you, feeling very well. I’ve done a lot of interviews recently so I feel like I’m on a bit of a roll! So can you tell our lovely readers a bit about The Absence of War? Well The Absence of War is a political play centred on the Labour Party in the general elections of 1992. The play is very accurate to describe exactly what was happening at the time; however the characters are all fictional. I play the lead, George Jones, who is the leader of the Labour Party. It’s a brilliant insight into the working of a party. The writer David Hare is brilliant and has done a fantastic job. Good stuff! What made you want to get involved in the play? I did a similar play at The National Theatre about two years ago, which was also directed by Jeremy Herring, who’s one of the hottest directors in the country right now. The play was called ‘This House’ and was also a political play. So when he asked me last April if I’d be interested in doing a touring play for him, I couldn’t say no! Plus, being involved in a play written by David Hare is also too good to resist! In The Absence of War you play fictional Labour party leader George Jones. Tell us a bit about the character. He’s seen as a bit of an anomaly; he’s not married, he hasn’t had a university education, he’s self-taught. He’s definitely a very intelligent man among all the Oxbridge-educated

politicians. He’s a man of the people… which sometimes ends up being his downfall. How did you start preparing for the role? I’m still doing it! We’re four weeks into rehearsals and still have four left, so there’s still plenty of time. Having already worked on ‘This House’ I’d done my homework - so this feels like a bit of an extension of that. With the characters in this being fictional and not based on actual leaders, it gives me the opportunity to build my own character, and my building of that character began way back when I was first given the play. We’ve started the rehearsals with some sit-down in-depth analysis; next week is when we get up and really start performing it! What audience is The Absence of War aimed at? I’d like to think the play is aimed at the whole spectrum. There was a David Hare season in Sheffield a couple of years back, so I reckon this is a play that the people of Sheffield will embrace and enjoy. Obviously the play is centred on the Labour Party. Do you think you have to be a Labour supporter to enjoy it? I think the play can appeal to anyone no matter what party you support. Labour supporters will obviously enjoy it, but Tory supporters can also embrace it, even if they just want to laugh! It’s really open to anyone - especially with the May General Elections coming up. With that in mind, do you think there’s any similarity between this play and the upcoming General Election? Definitely! At the moment, Ed Miliband’s leadership of the Labour Party is seriously being questioned. I’m not saying that’s right or wrong, but it’s a topic for debate. Before Christmas, it was questioned whether he should step down, and whether Andy Burnham should take his place. The same questions are put forward regarding the character of our play - so it certainly resonates.

The absence of War hits Sheffield Crucible Theatre February 6-21. Tickets start from £12, see www. sheffieldtheatres.co.uk for more.

cOMEDY WRITERS SEASON 2015

Hitting the Sheffield Library Theatre this February is the start of Tudor Players’ Comedy Writers Season 2015. To kick the season off on February 10-14, is Ray and Michael Cooney’s ‘Tom, Dick and Harry’- a highly original, consistently inventive farce. Originally performed at London’s Duke of York Theatre in 2005, ‘Tom, Dick and Harry’ was a hit with both audiences and critics. The play tells the story of Tom and his wife Linda who are in the final stages of adopting a baby and are nervously awaiting the arrival of Mrs Potter from the adoption agency. Unfortunately, at the same time, Dick, who shares the house with Tom and Linda, returns from a French smuggling trip with brandy and cigarettes and two illegal Kosovan refugees. Next, May 12-14 is Alan Ayckbourn’s (pictured) ‘Bedroom Farce’. The play, which was Ayckbourn’s first play to be produced at the National Theatre, tells the story of three couples, whose evenings go askew by the marital problems of another couple. To finish the comedy season is Graham Linehan’s ‘Ladykillers’ on October 13-17. Tickets £9 per production, contact tickets@tudorplayers.net for more.

life on the edge: ice age Frontier

Weston Park Museum // March 28 – September 20 // Free A brand new exhibition, Life on the Edge: Ice Age Frontier will make its debut at Weston Park this Spring, exploring the remarkable archaeological legacy of Creswell Crags and the lives of our pioneering ancestors who fought to survive there. During a period of great climate change between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago, the caves at Creswell provided vital shelter to nomadic hunters who came to the region in search of food. Over the millennia, successive generations journeyed huge distances to the Crags, travelling by foot from Continental Europe across Doggerland, the former landmass now covered by the North Sea. The exhibition has been co-curated by Museums Sheffield and Creswell Heritage Trust, and will offer visitors a window into the lives of the region’s earliest inhabitants, from the long-extinct animals they hunted and the harsh conditions they faced, to the tools and art they created. www.museums-sheffield.org.uk

Sheffield based Musical Theatre Group Splinters celebrated their 25th anniversary in style last month - as they brought to life the gritty, urban musical drama RENT by Jonathan Larson. Set against the backdrop of a 1990’s New York at the height of the AIDS epidemic, it would at first glance appear to have few of the attributes normally associated with the genre of musical theatre. Borne on the back of the dynamics between a group of creative young people in a tight knit community, all of whom are dealing with the hand dealt them by life and their reactions to it, RENT surprisingly, for those unfamiliar with it, provides just the right mix of humour and angst, love and betrayal and ultimately the heartbreakingly emotional loss of one of their own at a time when he had everything to live for. Ross Bannister (Roger) and Joseph Walker (Mark) were the glue in a seamless production as their engaging and totally believable performances highlighted perfectly how each of us can perceive the realities of life and thus its effect on us - in such starkly different ways. Outstanding performances from Nick Plummer-Walsh (Collins) and Abi Weingold (Mimi) further reinforced the integrity of the storyline with their equally intuitive and emotive characterisations. Danni Birks Hibbert (Maureen), Heather Taylor (Joanne) and John Crowther (Henny) all gave self-assured portrayals providing essential depth to the piece. This plot is one which naturally lends itself to being dark and somewhat depressing, however it was peppered with moments of sheer comic genius ably provided by the formidable talents of Jamie Cooke in his scene stealing caricature of the cross dressing Angel whose untimely death ultimately leaves both the other characters and the audience visibly moved to tears. The multi-faceted ensemble cast were strong and secure within their individual roles - but special mention must go to Jill Beckett for her stupendous vocal offering at the end of the show. The Great & The Goodison Exposed meets local artist Steve Goodison.

Born and bred in Sheffield, artist S teve Goodison has always been passionate about drawing. Qualified as a graphic designer, Steve currently works in the print industry as well as displaying his brilliant exhibitions across various venues in Sheffield. His latest instalment, ‘Lyric of Your Life’ is currently exhibiting at the Green Room; featuring stunning pencil drawings of musicians such as Bob Marley, Jarvis Cocker and Liam Gallagher along with their iconic song lyrics. We had a chat with Steve to hear all about it. Hi Steve, a bit of background first. How’d you first get into art? I’ve always been into drawing. Art was always my favourite subject at school, which led to me doing an art and design course after I left and then onto graphic design. About 5 years ago, I was asked to do a family portrait as a gift, and it all started from there. What drew you to the medium of pencil? I experimented with other mediums, but find that pencil works best for me. How do you decide which musician’s lyrics to immortalise in your portraits? I started off just doing portraits of people who I liked, the first couple I did were George Best & Jack Nicholson. Then I started on people who I enjoy musically & I had the idea to introduce song lyrics into the portraits. So I started experimenting with their songs and lyrics which I thought would work well. Why music? And have you met any of the musicians you’ve featured? Music is something I’m really into; and yes, I’ve met Big Shaun from the Everly Pregnant Brothers and Chris Perkins from Section 60. They both bought portraits I did featuring them. I’ve also met Toby Foster and Nick Banks, -both of them through winning the portraits of distinction competition in 2010 & 2014 at Art in the Gardens. Can you tell us a bit about your exhibition at the Green Room?

The exhibition is called ‘ Lyrics of your Life’ and is of my favourite musicians and their songs lyrics, which feature the artist within the lyrics. There are a set of 8 pictures, including Bob Marley, Jarvis Cocker and Paul Weller. However, since my work has been on display, I have been asked to do a couple of commissions. What’s your favourite piece of art? My own personal favourite is the portrait I did of Bob Marley. But I’ve always liked other Sheffield artists, like Pete McKee and Kid Acne - who’ve both inspired me. Did nick Banks reveal what made him choose your portrait to win the Portraits of Distinction competition at Art in the Gardens? He said he really liked the picture and the way it worked with the song lyrics! Steel city favourites like Alex Turner and Jarvis Cocker have all been represented in your portraits, how do you feel about the Sheffield music scene? I think Sheffield has produced some great bands and musicians over the years. Two of my favourites are Pulp and The Longpigs… and Joe Cocker will be greatly missed.

To catch Steve’s ‘Lyric of your Life’ exhibition, head to the Green room by the end of February. For more information and work by Steve, check out www.facebook.com/steve.goodison.7 108 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

Any tips for aspiring artists? You need to get your work out there for people to see. There are loads of places in Sheffield willing to display your artwork. Also, social media, I’ve sold my artwork to people in London, Glasgow and America all through my Facebook page. What’s next for you in 2015? Last year I did a set of pictures called ‘In the Suburbs’ - which featured Sheffield musicians and where they grew up. I’ve just started doing a version featuring Mancunian musicians and bands – so I’m hoping to get them displayed later this year at a venue in Manchester.

Remember Sheffield ‘rocktronica’ band Kings Have Long Arms? Well, back in 2004 when the band played Feedback festival in France, they were handed a cartoon by a bloke who satirised their performance. Turns out this appeared in Charlie Hebdo magazine, and the cartoonist in question narrowly missed the recent terrorist attacks on the magazine’s office as he got up late that day. One to make you think.
