CAPRICORN Dec 22 – Jan 19

Following a particularly heavy night, you wake to find yourself a member of Her Majesty’s Secret Service — after bumping into an MI6 agent in a cocktail bar and impressing him with your in-depth knowledge of Russian military policy and ability to look cool whilst drinking a martini. Before you know it, you’re suited and booted and given fully fledged 00-status. Without the foggiest idea what to do, you decide on blagging it and persevere to look like a busy agent when people are looking — stealthily shuffling along walls and running around doing forward rolls. You’re finally dismissed when your annual intelligence report consists of Kim Jong-un “looking a little pissed off lately” and Russia qualifying for the World Cup. Still, it was fun while it lasted. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 Your sex life takes a turn for the magical this month when your bump and grind playlist gets mixed up with your Harry Potter audiobook. You hump slowly to the sounds of Stephen Fry describing the Hogwarts grounds. PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 You will trip over a shoelace. Jupiter will piss itself. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 Well done on being a real blokey-bloke this month. Treat yourself to a sit-down wee. TAURUS April 20 - May 20 As a brooding Taurus, you’re unnecessarily rude to people who work in the public sector, and often

find yourself offering fights to cold callers. Take a chill pill, yeah? GEMINI May 21 - June 20 Have you ever tried to imagine a world without hypothetical situations? CANCER June 21 - July 22 Force feeding a tramp with a Mars Bar does not count as charity. It’s technically illegal. LEO July 23 - Aug 22 Like a lion, you regularly poo outdoors. VIRGO Aug 23 - Sep 22 Ah, the trials and tribulations of going through life with a resting bitch face. However, there is a solution… it’s called… CHEER THE F*CK UP!

LET THE GREAT FOODINI CARESS YOU INTO THE ETHER. FONDLE OUR FUTURES, FOODINI - FONDLE OUR FUTURES! UHN.

LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 Smoking weed, calling people “wasteman” and listening to grime music will never change the fact that you’re a spoilt middle class kid from Dore going through an awkward stage to annoy your parents. SCORPIO Oct 23 – Nov 21 Oh, you’re really going to change this time? You’ve already sorted your gym membership, have you? The cosmic forces are telling me to your ruffle hair and mention how cute you can be around this time of year. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 You receive a huge shock this month when you realise that collecting bellybutton fluff in a jar by the bed isn’t “just something everyone does”.

LOCAL HERO

Curzon Is On!

Leading arthouse cinema chain Curzon launch their new Sheffield venue this month. Opening Friday January 9, on George Street in the town centre, the three screen cinema will be showing Curzon’s renowned programme of independent films from around the world - as well as live opera, ballet and theatre broadcasts. Along with a total cinema capacity of over one hundred and fifty seats, the cinema comes complete with a café and a swanky bar for some pre or post-film drinks and grub. Located on the former site of the Sheffield Banking Company premises, the Curzon architects have respected the integrity of the original building and created a space that’s modern and comfortable - whilst still fitting in with its Sheffield surroundings. For more information, and cinema listings, see www.curzoncinemas. com.

“Long distance relationships aren’t ideal, but you can get a cast of your penis made for your girlfriend nowadays.” “Oh yeah... she could have mine as a keyring.” “The only reason I learnt Swahili was so that I could translate the beginning of the Lion King… then I realised it’s in Zulu.” “Well, I’m seeing The Hobbit tonight, mate. Feel like I should be dressed in all black and take flowers with me for the last goodbye.” “If I’d of said owt back I would of slapped her in the tits because she’s a knob anyway.”

BRYAN UNKLES

We get to grips with the brains behind ethical coffee brand Cafeology to discover how he’s changing the world... one cup o’ Joe at a time. Bryan Unkles is the founder and director of Sheffield coffee company Cafeology. But coffee wasn’t always in his blood. Before setting up Cafeology ten years ago, and striving to improve the city’s coffee scene, Bryan trained to become a bricklayer. If he drank coffee, it was instant. And if you’d told him that he’d one day be an Eat Sheffield Food Hero, he’d have thought you were mad. Bryan ended up in photocopier sales after the late ‘80s recession, and then persuaded dad Malcolm to give him a job in his business selling fruit drink concentrates. Knowing his dad couldn’t really afford to take him on, he threw himself into new business development. Business boomed and the company was bought out by Lion Foods, which also bought a coffee business - marking Bryan’s initiation to the industry. His interest was sparked and, after a spell with an Italian coffee company in London and a visit to a Holland roastery which introduced him to the principles of Fairtrade, the seeds of a business idea were sown. The sad passing of Bryan’s mum Valerie at the age of 58 in 2003 marked his decision to start Cafeology with business partner Andy McClatchey. Why Cafeology? “Having an ‘ology’ appealed to me when science definitely hadn’t been my subject at school!” he laughs. www. cafeology.com.

Still rooted in Sheffield, Cafeology celebrated its 10th birthday last year and sticks rigidly to its ethical practices. It uses 100% Arabica coffee and its products carry marks including Fairtrade, Soil Association and Rainforest Alliance guaranteeing 100% traceable products. The company recognises the importance of provenance and builds personal relationships with suppliers. Bryan has visited producers in countries including Colombia and Costa Rica, and will visit Guatemalan producer Guaya’b in January 2015. Cafeology is a recognisable brand in Sheffield, stocked in establishments from Sheffield Theatres to the teaching hospitals, restaurants and cafes. It also supplies outlets and business around the UK and Europe and has its own coffee ‘pod’ outlet in the entrance to the Decathlon sports store at Moor Foot. Here customers can buy takeaway beverages, food and snacks, as well as bags of Cafeology coffee, machines and more. The future for Cafeology holds more ethical and innovative products, as demonstrated by its latest coffee - a bird-friendly, shadegrown variety sold to consumers and venues in partnership with the RSPB. The product supports rainforest conservation and highlights the issue of deforestation in the pursuit of sungrown coffee.

Let It Snow

Last month saw more than sixty South Yorkshire companies sponsoring a festive and heart-warming display outside the Sheffield Children’s Hospital - raising over £50,000 and helping to fund a new world-class wing. The stunning spectacle, which was switched on December 2, featured illuminated snowflakes on the Western Bank in aid of The Children’s Hospital Charity’s ‘Make it Better’ appeal. Well on the way to its target, the appeal needs to raise a total of £10m to fund the huge redevelopment of the hospital, which will be the biggest healthcare project in the region, and bring outstanding facilities to benefit children from all around the world. More info on The Children’s Hospital Charity and the ‘Make it Better’ appeal is available online. www.tchc.org.uk.

Dear SP, Before I start, I must mention that I love my girlfriend to bits; she’s attractive, intelligent and has a laddish sense of humour. It’s great to have a missus who shares my interests in football and watches Two Pints of Lager with me. However, things took a turn for the awkward the other day when we were cuddling on t’sofa and she let rip with a massive fart. Thinking it was a one-off, I laughed along with her and thought nothing more of it. That was three months ago, and since that fateful (fartful?) day, my missus has decided that pumping while in my presence is a completely acceptable activity. With every anal exhale and consequent shriek of laughter she loses a bit of sex appeal. How do I tell her that I find it disgusting without changing the laidback personality that I fell in love with? Jason, Lowedges Oh, Jason! Suffice to say, a girl who’ll stroke your shaft while discussing faults in Arsenal’s zonal marking system doesn’t come around too often. However, you’ve got wind of something a little stinky, and you’re running away with your tail between your legs and a bottle of Febreeze in your hand. I can’t say that I blame you. What next? Your girl giving you the ‘Dutch Oven’ when you next go down to growl at the badger? Sit her down, stroke her hand, gaze into her eyes and say: “baby, I love you like a bee loves honey. But, if you don’t quit with the tushy ticklers, then I’m gone. This ain’t Horton Hears a Poo, you dig? Yours, SP

PARKWAY TAV As we know, the city of Sheffield is blessed with a selection of delightful boozers and bars. However, there’s also a few drinking holes within our seven hills which, frankly, you’d have to be insane or slightly partial to the taste of hospital food to pay a visit to on a Saturday night. Arguably, none more so than the Parkway Tavern, once situated directly below Parkhill Flats before its closure

JOE FOOD GETS REYT UPSET ABAHT SUMMAT

Anus horribilis It’s come to that stage again, or as my missus calls it, my “male time of month”, where I have to sit down and comb through my heaving cerebral backlog of pedantic gripes and complaints to pick out my prime slice of beef for this column. Looking into my swirling pensieve of grievances is always a cathartic experience - and it’s just so, so difficult to pick just one when there’s such a wealth of people, places and practices that bug me: Nick Grimshaw, Leeds and Facebook personality quizzes spring immediately to mind. Over the New Year, we pose to each other the question: ‘”should old acquaintance be forgot?”’ Well, no it chuffing well shouldn’t be in my book, especially if the acquaintance in question got right on my tits.

GASTROPUBS

It was seemingly impossible in 2014 to walk into a boozer and order ham, egg and chips. Instead, you had to choose between the sage infused handpicked white crab meat with lemon grind or, alternatively, something smothered in bacon jam. Bacon and jam were doing fine on their own, so why combine them? You can’t just f*ck with people’s lives like that.

SUPER BADASS FLU VIRUS

The concluding months of 2014 saw the office embroiled in a seemingly perpetual circle of illness; one had to constantly

dodge mucus and manky tissues – oh, and our graphic designer technically became a zombie for a fortnight.

BEYONCE & JAY Z

I’m thoroughly fed up of people who cite these two chief illuminati reptilians as inspirations. It would appear that a wealthy married couple not divorcing is something which demands worldwide affection. The couple are now estimated to be worth over a billion dollars. That’s not inspirational, that’s just ridiculous. But, of course, each penny is completely justified because they’re soooo talented. Sod ‘em. You’ll see when the scales come out and they try establishing a new world order.

CHRISTMAS ADS

We had the Bear and the Hare cobblers, but last year it was a soppy penguin and the romanticisation of trench warfare which tugged at our heart strings to remind us what Christmas is all about: devotedly giving all of our money to corporate giants. That’s me done whinging for about one hour at least. Now, I’m off to shout at pigeons on t’Moor and mutter under my breath at the teenager playing bassline at the back of the bus. Ta ra!

Dinner For Two

Pearls of Yorkshire Wisdom

For more information, email ella.stephen@shiver.tv or visit www.channel4.com/ programmes/take-part.

Author of the acclaimed The Yorkshire Meaning of Liff, Joe Moorwood understands the beautiful Yorkshire mind more than most, and digs deep to deliver his amusing new title Yorkshire Wisdom - a collection of inspiring words from extraordinary/everyday Yorkshire folk. Words of wisdom from the area’s eminent offspring are all well and good, but Sheffield firefighter and author Joe Moorwood knew a handbook offering insight into classic Yorkshire life wouldn’t be complete without the gems of knowledge from Yorkshire’s ordinary folk. Their quotations now rightly share the page with the words of those already guaranteed a place in Yorkshire folklore. From the insightful and inspiring, to the amusing and downright obscene – Joe Moorwood’s new title proves that the good people of Yorkshire are rarely short of an opinion. Seek it out online.

Infamous Channel 4 series Come Dine With Me, known for its explosive dinner parties and eccentric personalities, is coming to Sheffield and Rotherham to cast for a new series – with a twist! This time around they’re giving three couples the chance to host the perfect dinner party - with the winning lucky duo taking home a cool £1,000. They’re inviting fun-loving couples with a passion for food and a penchant for dinner parties to take part - just as long as you’re over the age of 18 and not trained or working as a professional chef (because that just

wouldn’t be fair, would it?). They’re looking to meet people the week commencing January 12, and shoot from February 9.

all hooped up Our hips don’t lie – so we’re kicking off 2015 with an epic hula hoop battle against All Hooped Up. Will our year get off to a winning start? Read on, dear reader, read on… Words: Emily Beaumont. Pics: Marc Barker.

All Hooped Up is a new and fun hula-hooping club teaching hula skills to hoop-enthusiasts all over our fair Sheffield. Lizzy, instructor and founder of All Hooped Up, has been hula-hooping since she was a young’un, falling in love with the sport when she began hoopin’ in the rocky mountains of Canada. She’s a qualified hula-hoop instructor with a BSc in Sports Science. Impressive stuff! Me? I’m the bird who epically failed GSCE PE and hasn’t taken part in any competitive sport for about ten years. So, makes sense that I’d be the one taking her on at her own game, eh? However, after assisting in the running of a hulahoop club at college, and possessing the ability to hula for a respectable amount of time, I was feeling that this, my first Exposed VS, was possibly in the bag. Possibly. After claiming over a glass of vino during after-work drinks I had the hula-hooping ability of a world-renowned professional, the pressure was certainly on. Confidence is key and all that… So what better way to spend a cold, wet, December afternoon than freezing your arse off in the Exposed HQ courtyard? After initially meeting Lizzy, who arrived with about fifteen differently sized hulahoops in tow, we went for a quick practice in the courtyard. Trying to tactfully choose the easiest hula-hoop for said challenge. I had a go with each of the hoops, eventually opting for a relatively large weighted number. Lizzy’s disadvantage; she’d be attempting the course with three.

As Editor Carl set up the ever-so-professional obstacle course with materials from the office, Lizzy and I had a quick practice with our hoops. This was when the realisation set in; I couldn’t hula-hoop and walk at the same time. Damnit. As the main component of the task, an Exposed victory seemed a bit unlikely now. After a few epic hula failures, Carl and Lizzy suggested I skip with the hoop as opposed to the traditional hula. Alright, seems fair.

THE COURSE

THE HOOPS OF DEATH First stop on the obstacle course were The Hoops of Death. Four hoops set out on the ground which we both had to run to (whilst hula-hooping mind) and do three rotations in each hoop. Easy enough. BAD SMURF Second stop, Bad Smurf. Simply run/hula around Bad Smurf. Straight forward. THE MAGICAL TINSEL TRAIL Ah, Carl’s obvious favourite, The Magical Tinsel Trail. Artistically laid out on the ground, one just has to follow and hula along the magical tinsel trail to victory. OFFICER CARTMAN Fourth on the quest, Officer Cartman. Our Exposed mascot marked the fourth of the obstacles, similarly

Oh, and you WILL respect his authoritah! WALK THE PLANK The final, and most challenging part of the obstacle course; Walk the Plank. This one brought in by Lizzy, obviously. This was made up of a wooden beam balanced on a brick, making a sort-of see-saw, which we had to hula-hoop whilst walking across. Uh oh. ROUND 1: LIZZY First-up was snake-hips Lizzy. Armed with the timer, and praying she was as daunted by the course as I was, I watched her set off. Mastering the perfection of walking and hula-hooping (seriously, how does one DO that?!), she sped off into The Hoops of Death in what seemed like the blink of an eye. Easily completing her three rotations, before I knew it she was approaching Bad

Smurf. Giving the timer a quick check, only ten seconds had passed. Ten seconds! Bloomin’ ‘eck. Easing her way around Bad Smurf, and gliding along the magical Tinsel Trail like a magical hula-hooping fairy, only twentyodd seconds were gone. Damn, this girl was good! I was pretty sure I couldn’t sprint the course in this kinda’ time. Passing good ole’ Officer Cartman in seconds, Lizzy quickly made her way up to the climax of the obstacle course; the deadly, terrifying, and downright dangerous Walk the Plank. Admittedly a little worried about this one, Lizzy made her way slowly yet gracefully over the plank, with barely even a stumble. She finished the course in a bloody staggering 44.3 seconds. Impressive stuff lady! ROUND 2: ME Reyt, my turn. Not allowing myself any short cuts, I made the courageous decision to actually hoop the whole way. Slowly, yet surely, completing my three rotations in the Hoops of Death, I stumbled across an obstacle I hadn’t known existed until now; the damn courtyard cobbles. As the rain began to come down, the cobbles got slippier, making the course even more difficult (that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!). Approaching Bad Smurf, I dropped the hoop. No! Picking up and carrying on (thankfully there were no penalty points) I made my way over The Magical Tinsel Trail. In the wind and the rain, the trail had become more of a not-so-magical tinsel heap, so I just kinda ran past it. Time

saved. Trying to be as speedy as possible, I ran/ hula-hooped/didn’t hula-hoop around t’old Officer Cartman, as I mentally prepared myself for the fifth and final obstacle, Walk The Plank. Having refused a practice earlier in fear of breaking my legs (and threating to sue Carl if said injury happened), I was less than prepared for this bit. Not letting my pride (or arse) be bruised, I hula-hooped over the seesaw, a past the completion point. Hurrah!

THE RESULTS

The moment of truth. Having made it back alive and uninjured from the cobbles and challenges, the results were in. My time was announced by Carl at 1 minute and 20 seconds - making Lizzy’s time of 44.3 seconds the winner! Having only taken a third of my time, the girl schooled me good.

Verdict

So we’re not starting 2015 with a win, and it’s yet another loss for the Exposed office. Having boasted being the bees’ knees for this task, it’s safe to say drinks will be on me this week. Hey ho. There’s always February, yeah?

Exposed is seated in the beautifully quaint Montgomery theatre - which has faithfully served the arts community of Sheffield since the 1930s. Over the years, the red curtain drawn across the stage has opened to present enactments of pretty much every play or performance you could think of. Treading the boards for us tonight is Faerground Accidents...

Providing the drama today are Faerground Accidents: a psychotic pop-punk band creating a sound which many have compared to the infectious catchiness of early Pulp, narrated by lead singer Bomar Faery, complete with Smiths-style lamentations on life, love and relationships. Certainly, it is rather easy to draw comparisons between the gritty, resentful romanticisations present during ‘Back in Town’ and Cocker’s own brand of tales depicting awkward skirmishes with love and sex. Of course, Bomar also made an appearance in the recent Pulp documentary, which has possibly served to exaggerate links between the two. The band also have qualities which feature in the early Arctic Monkeys school of thought, i.e. writing music about what you know, i.e.i.e. Sheffield and – usually drunken – experiences of the city and the people that reside in it. With a fine musical heritage at their very core, it’s no surprise that the band have formed a sound which instantly pricks up the ears of Sheffielders. Murray Fenton (guitarist) played for Artery back in the day; Michael ‘Breezie’ Breeze (drums) was in The Dodgems; and Dan Botterill (bass guitar) has also seen his fair share of band action with acts such as Loveboat. This leaves original members Bomar and Henrietta Rowlatt (keyboards) to complete the wonderfully distinctive looking line up. Great to have you in for the January live session, guys. Have you decided which tracks you’ll be playing for us? Michael: We’ll definitely be playing our next single, ‘She Makes me Want to Die’, which comes out on February 9. Bomar: We’re not quite sure about the other one, but I think we’ll choose ‘We Hate the Same things’ as our second track – it’s fairly new and gets a good reception when we play it.

Interview: Joe Food. Photography: John Heyes

Tell me a bit about the next single? Bomar: It’s a song about the conflicts which come about when you have two people who drive each other absolutely insane. It just describes that situation in detail, basically. Even though it’s a bit dark, it’s still a pop song. We like to make songs that people can still dance to - regardless of the topic. Dan: It’s not metaphorical is it, really? Bomar: No, it’s not. It’s quite literally about somebody almost driving you to suicide. *Laughs* Is there a bit of a skill involved in writing songs with angry, emotive content, but making them enjoyable to listen to? Bomar: The skill is simply to get really drunk while you’re performing. Just get drunk and pissed off then have a little outburst when you play it. It also helps to have a really good band that knows what to do with the songs you write.

‘We Hate the Same Things’ came out in November, and you’ve had a great reaction since. Have you been listening to the positive feedback citing you as the “next big thing”, or do you not pay much attention to that? Murray: To be honest, everything has been happening really fast. We’ve been doing plenty of gigging, and when you’re in the moment you’ve not got much of a chance to take a step back and realise that people are starting to take a bit of notice. It’s been difficult to gauge the opinion and – this might be the wrong word but – “hype” around the band. Bomar: It seemed to come out of nowhere, to be honest. We’d had a couple of decent reviews, some airplay and the gigs were great, but recently I’ve had a few people coming up to me in pubs and stuff. As a band, you’ve got quite a distinctive look which you seem to relish. Is this a way of saying that there’s not enough interesting looking bands out there today? Murray: In all honesty, there’s been no thought process put into how we look. None whatsoever. Dan: We’re not paying any attention to what anyone else is doing; we’ve got enough inspiration and creativity between all of us in this band. I genuinely think that we are just a bunch of f*cking weirdos. For some crazy reason it just works. Is there a style over substance issue in younger bands today? Dan: I have actually heard stories of bands forming because they admired each other’s haircuts. Murray: We’ve all got our own sense of flamboyance, and we’re obviously very well led with Bomar at the front of it all. Crucially though, we’ve all got a sense of who we are and how to express it. A lot of people have latched onto your music having a ‘sound of Sheffield’ which hasn’t been heard since the Pulp days; I guess it’s to do with the ways your music deals with the awkwardness of love and relationships. It stands out because a lot of modern day musicians dress up such topics to be something beautiful and dramatic, but sometimes, as you say in your music, it can just be a case of getting depressed at buying a value meal for one at the supermarket. Bomar: I think the Arctic Monkeys did similar sort of things, to be honest. I reckon a lot of the Pulp comparisons are drawn from the fact that I was part of the documentary and I don’t think they’re always completely accurate. As for other artists dressing up love songs, the way we write tends to be about more common experiences than happy endings. And, let’s be honest, the others just aren’t realistic.

I have actually heard stories of bands forming because they admired each other’s haircuts.

Bo, I’ve also noticed from your live gigs that you tend to favour a bottle of Blossom Hill Rose. Is that a communal drink or just your own? Bomar: *Laughs* Mostly just mine. Actually, I share it out with Henrietta every now and again. You see, I like to lose control a bit whenever I go on stage - and usually a bottle of wine does the trick. Dan: I don’t think I’ve ever been on a stage completely sober. It’s nice to lose your inhibitions every now and again. Right. Let’s talk New Year’s resolutions. What have we got? Dan: I’m going to get fatter and older, drink more and be ruder to people. I can’t fail. Bomar: I don’t like making promises I can’t keep. So mine is always to persevere with smoking. Michael: I’m just gonna carry on being f*cking me. Henrietta: I agree with Bo; why make them if you’re not going to keep them? Erm, so I guess mine will be to drink more beer. Other than being yourselves, what else is on the horizon for 2015? Michael: We’ve got a music video in the pipeline - and plenty of gigs, of course. Oh, and we’re also going over to France because we’ve been chosen to feature on an album put together about the miners’ strike. This fella has got a load of bands from Sheffield doing covers and they’ll get released over there. Bomar: Yeah, we’ve done a cover of ‘A Stones Throw Away’ by The Style Council. It’s a bit random, but we’re looking forward to it. Other than that, we’re just carrying on with more of the same, I suppose. We’ve built up a solid foundation of fans we call ‘The Faeries’ and they seem to follow us wherever we go. We love gigging for them. Michael: Having played in other bands which have done relatively well, it’s struck me how easy everything has fallen together with us. The image, music and everything has just naturally come into place; collectively all of our attributes have come together and created what we are: Faergound Accidents.

cover story them, but over time it gets watered down and it dissipates - and for whatever reason, it doesn’t happen. I’ll always be indebted to Rob for it - and I’m just overwhelmed by what a phenomenal experience the whole thing’s been really.” Corden, it seems, found a very collaborative director in Marshall; whose previous works include Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and the musicals Chicago and Nine. Quick to champion his director, Corden holds him up as the reason for Into The Woods’ success in transitioning from stage to screen. “There’s no other reason, and it will embarrass him hugely, but I don’t think anybody will ever take a show that’s three hours long and beloved by so many people - passionately - and cut an hour and you don’t lose a beat of story, a beat of heart, a beat of humour and, if anything, you go ‘I don’t even know what I’ve really missed’, and yet it holds - and no one else can take credit for that except for Rob.” More than just a case of learning his lines and a few musical numbers, Corden credits Marshall with educating him on what makes a film musical work and what doesn’t. “I can remember Rob saying to me ‘no one wants to see - in a film - four ballads in a row. It will hold on stage because you’re watching something very different, it’s a personal interaction between you and the performer, and they’re actually there doing it’. He said ‘It’s all about protecting No One Is Alone because that’s the heartbeat of the thing’ and you kinda go ‘yeah, yeah, sure’… but I’ve watched other musicals since and gone ‘ah, you’re completely right!’ The first ballad in this movie musical knocked the wind out of my sails, the second one, I was like ‘yeah, it’s good….’, the third one, I’m like ‘phoof!’, the fourth one goes for nothing - and that’s not because the performances aren’t right, they’re amazing - but to have a director who can do it and pull it off in the way he has, that’s so wonderful, that’s the reason I don’t think there’s anyone else on Earth who could have done it. I genuinely don’t know if anyone else could take this text and make a film that would work in this manner. Truly.” For audiences, a huge draw for Into The Woods will naturally be the idea of a fairytale crossover adventure, what with fairytales being such business in entertainment - and given yet another boost in popularity over the past year with the success of Frozen. As a father, Corden himself however finds traditional fairytales rather out-of-step. “I always remember finding them a little bit scary, I think that maybe because at school they started with Hansel and Gretel - which might be the darkest story you could ever read a child. I haven’t read my son many, I don’t know if it’s a particularly healthy thing to tell children

I’ve started to think I should make a Christmas album. I love Christmas music so much - I start listening to it in October! that this notion of happily ever after will just exist forever, and that will be your life - and I think it’s a wonderful thing in this film that, in the song I mentioned earlier, No One Is Alone, there’s a moment where Anna’s character and my character are talking to the young children, saying giants can be good and witches can be right, and you decide what’s good and you decide what’s right, which I think is a really positive message to say to children. To say whatever your life is, and whatever your circumstance, there’s some screw-ups coming your way. You can’t deny it, the screw-ups - they’re coming for you - and

in those moments when you feel like that, when life takes those turns, you’re going to feel like you’re completely on your own in the world. You’re going to feel completely on your own and you won’t be, and you’re not, because no one is. And that’s made me think about how I’ll read things to my children and the emphasis that I’ll put on certain things.” Don’t feel too bad for young Max Corden in the meanwhile, for - as his father reveals he doesn’t lack in other bedtime stories. Back in the daylight, music has fast become a key component of Corden’s onscreen career; having hosted the Brits

a whopping five times, and collaborated with Gary Barlow, it’s fitting that he’d turn up in a musical sooner or later. But, is that where his musical ambitions end? “Almost for my own enjoyment, I’ve started to think I should make a Christmas album. I love Christmas music so much - I start listening to it in October!” A huge fan of Michael Bublé (he scored tickets to see the Canadian crooner at the O2 over Christmas), Corden finds traditional holiday songs enchanting. “I sort of started thinking that maybe I’ll just do it on my own! Maybe I’ll just like… (he breaks to sing the chorus line from Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas before continuing) …so, yeah, I might do that! You’ll never hear it! But maybe… I’ve got a feeling I might just do it for my own pleasure!” Despite having a number of prominent roles on stage and screen, Into The Woods marks Corden’s first foray into a mainstream musical; something he’s keen to build on in the West End. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do! My whole dream, all I wanted at school, was to be in a West End musical - and then I was lucky enough when I was seventeen to be in a musical called Martin Guerre… which

was… I’m not speaking out of turn to say it was a disaster! But I was in the chorus and was stood so far in the back that for a lot of the show I could touch the back of the wall. I get a lot more excited about the prospect of being in a musical than I do about almost anything else, really. There are so many shows that I love - and that’s not including the new ones that haven’t been written yet!” When asked about his dream roles however, he has a very specific wish list. “A dream of mine is to play Max Bialystock in The Producers. It’s a role I would give my right arm to play one day. Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum is something I hope I’ll get the chance to do one day. When I saw Hedwig, I just was like ‘oh my god, this is the greatest part that’s ever been written!’ There’s a musical that Rob actually worked on on Broadway, which many people don’t know here, called Kiss Of The Spider Woman by Kander and Ebb. There’s a role of a guy called Molina, whose an imprisoned drag queen costumier, which I really love. That’d be a turn up, wouldn’t it..? Into The Woods hits UK cinemas this month.

SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL PROMOTION

A YEAR IN THE LIFE… OF THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CHARITY 2014 was a busy year for The Children’s Hospital Charity, as work got underway building a brand new wing at the hospital on Western Bank – the biggest healthcare project in the region. Hundreds of events have been held, and hundreds of thousands of pounds raised for the project, as part of the charity’s Make it Better appeal. The appeal, which aims to raise £10m by 2016, will bring world-class facilities to the already world-class hospital to help children get better more quickly in spacious and comfortable surroundings. On June 27, some 300 individuals, groups and businesses helped raise almost £60,000 in one day, on the second annual Make it Better day. Fundraisers held bake sales, pyjama days at school or work, carried out bucket collections and more to help boost the Make it Better appeal. Rebecca Staden, fundraising manager at The Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “Make it Better Day was a huge success, thanks to all of the people who took part. Next year, Make it Better Day is on June 26th, and we want more people than ever to join in and help make our hospital better.” 2014 was also a big year for Team Theo, the charity’s group of active challenge participants. In May, Jessica Ennis-Hill became the face of Team Theo, while squash legend Nick Matthew joined the charity as patron in October. Last month, The Children’s Hospital Charity was named as a partner for next year’s Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon. Machines funded by the charity are already changing lives in the hospital. Amongst them is a cell salvage machine, donated to the hospital back in August, which collects blood lost during surgery and cleans it before giving it back to the patient – reducing the reliance on blood banks. A portable neonatal ultrasound machine is keeping the tiniest patients comfy in their cots during scans, while a high-sided bed is benefiting children with head trauma. The charity has also funded thousands of pounds of research, helping improve the outcomes for children with a variety of conditions, from asthma and autism to brittle bones.

Artfelt, the charity’s arts programme, is in the midst of a stunning exhibition from the National Fairground Archive in its dedicated display space, The Long Gallery. It follows a show by Jonathan Wilkinson, which raised thousands for the programme. David Vernon-Edwards, director of The Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “It’s been a great year for the charity. Our fantastic supporters have helped us raise money which is transforming the lives of our patients and will do for generations to come. But, as the 2016 deadline for the Make it Better appeal edges closer, we still need to raise more. In 2015, we need as many people as possible to join us in our bid to make The Children’s Hospital in

Sheffield even better.” The Charity still needs to raise much more for the Make it Better appeal, which will provide patients with more private rooms and family beds, a giant play tower and a garden so youngsters can enjoy the outdoors safely.

Think Of England Local lady Michelle Mullins has announced the launch of her own fashion label ‘English Girl’. The brand, which is set for launch in time for Spring/ Summer 2015, will offer Balearic rock-chic inspired clothing, made up of exquisite fashion party pieces. With Michelle’s 19 years of experience in design for the country’s biggest brands including Topshop, Superdry and Fred Perry, ‘English Girl’ is certainly set to be a brand for the style-focused trendsetter. Speaking about her influences, Michelle explained that she drew a lot from the character Jessa Johnson in the US HBO series ‘Girls’. “She’s spent several years travelling the world - and with that she brings an English eccentricness which is magnetic to the rest of the group. In the UK we have always been home to some of the coolest, kookiest girls on the planet, who are papped at parties, festivals, shows, shopping, hanging out with their friends. This has been happening since way back when, it never goes out of fashion.” This has influenced the design and online presence, as each season the English Girl team visits a new destination to inspire their collection. This will be accompanied by a behind the scenes blog named EnglishGirlGoes.

November 23 saw a fashion show like no other. The Sheffield Style Show saw a host of Sheffield’s best designers congregate and put together a helluva fashion event celebrating our fine city’s best talent. The show was the fifth in Sheffield to be put on by event organiser Charlotte Calvert. It was also for a good cause, as funds raised went to Sheffield charity the Eden Dora Trust, a charity which supports families who have children with encephalitis, a condition that causes swelling of the brain. We’re talking full-on fashion here, with a dynamic catwalk show featuring Sheffield’s finest design talent, with menswear, womenswear and childrenswear all in the offing. There was also over 30 individual stalls offering bespoke clothing to purchase. In addition to all this, a host of local musicians provided entertainment for the evening. Exciting stuff! Our own Fan Yang, whose designs were featured, was honoured to have her talents recognised in the Sheffield Style Show. Her stall, which featured her brand Roselle, celebrated her various designs which combine her Chinese heritage and classic British style. Fan creates individual pieces, mainly sophisticated cocktail and evening dresses for women. Despite not having an academic

background in fashion, Fan’s sophisticated and original designs make it difficult to tell. She only started designing clothes in 2012 - making her progress as a designer all the more impressive. “I was always inspired by my mother. She’s a very classy lady who knows how to style herself with sophistication” says Fan. “I wanted to create clothes that empowered women and made them feel more special than that typically offered on the fashion scene today.”

Fan ensures every quality and fine detail is put into her clothing. She uses only organic fabrics such as cashmere and silk to ensure the element of luxury to her bespoke designs is upheld. After making the aspirational decision she wanted to pursue design, Fan spent 1 year in her homeland of China to find the perfect manufacturer for her brand and turn her dream into a reality. She discovered a manufacturer in Shanghai, where, as she says, “the magic happens.” Fan’s designs have a large focus on classic British style - with sharp tailoring and a feminine fit. However, it’s the subtle oriental elements that make her designs particularly unique. Her dresses are rich in spectacular colour and detail; her shift dresses with the mandarin collar are particularly special. The Roselle label is reminiscent of the likes of Ralph Lauren and Burberry, but with a truly unique touch... “I have a Chinese poem on the back of the labels. It’s an ancient Chinese poem about love. It’s about a beautiful woman, who is washing her hair by the river, and a prince comes by and they fall in love. I chose this poem as I wanted the brand to reflect that… to make women feel like muses or goddesses.”

You can catch Roselle clothing in Love The Lot, a boutique on Ecclesall Road, where Fan sells her exclusive designs. 38 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

Good Vibrations are the tattoo parlour for all seasons. No, literally – they’ve only gone and got their kit off for a calendar. Shudder. We collared Matt and Toby to find out more. A calendar, eh? What’s the craic? Matt: Basically, we hired a new apprentice who has a rather interesting take on the uses of Instagram and social media. I like to think he’s making social commentary that’s highly sophisticated and takes a stark look at equality… but I know Toby better than that - and I’m pretty sure he just enjoys posing in his pants. I wasn’t about to let him have all the fun. So, it’s full of semi-naked pics of you guys, right? Toby: Semi-nude, yeah. We like to think of

it as classy and tasteful… but we’ll let you be the judge of that... Were there any funny/awkward moments during the making of it? Toby: Yeah - but it was away from the camera and other members of staff whilst me and Matt were getting changed. Matt’s outfit was substantially more form fitting than mine and he thought he might not full ‘fill’ his side of the photoshoot - so he asked me to be his fluffer. I can’t say what else happened in that cold dark toilet but Matt didn’t disappoint for the camera or room full of staff and clients. Will you be selling it? Matt: That remains to be seen – and, if we do, it’ll more than likely be to the benefit the Bluebell Wood charity. The

interesting thing is that we only managed to take 11 photos. So, if anyone does fancy purchasing it, there might be a nostalgic surprise awaiting calendar users this time next year! Will this be an annual occurrence? Matt: It’s definitely not off the cards though we’d more than likely have to go bigger and better! Perhaps we could wrangle up a costume for our bearishly handsome apprentice, Joe Summers. Finally, are you guys making any New Year resolutions? Toby: I’m pretty sure there’s a unanimous shop decision to stop smoking! But, other than that, it’s what we always wanna do to improve and grow and be the best that we can be!

Get Active

At Activity Sheffield, they’re proudly saying no to un-kept New Year’s resolutions, no to juice diets, no to unachievable exercise goals and no to detoxing! They’re set on making positive changes in 2015 by adding to our lives rather than taking away or eliminating. Now’s the perfect time for you to join them by making both yourself and your families health the number one priority each and every day. No more excuses, this is your year, and here are their Top 3 to begin making the new you:

1. check Your WeiGhT

Nearly three in 10 women, and four in 10 men in England, are overweight. Obesity causes 9,000 premature deaths every year and, on average, reduces life expectancy by nine years. Use the NHS BMI Calculator to find out if you’re a healthy weight or whether you’d benefit from making some changes. Aim for a healthy and balanced diet for you and your family, try to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables, and drink 2 litres of water a day – you’ll feel the benefits for yourself and family in no time at all.

2. exercise reGularlY

The benefits of exercise aren’t limited to losing weight. Even if you’re slim, you’ll still get health benefits from exercising, you’ll also feel better and meet new people. At Activity Sheffield, they’re passionate about getting Sheffield moving, and have a whole range of sessions ranging from Street Dance and Boxing to Health Walks and Chair Based Exercise - so there really is something for all the whole family to get involved in. You can find out more about sessions in your local area on their Activity Finder or by calling their friendly Customer Service Team on 0114 273 4266.

3. QuiT sMokinG

The health benefits of quitting smoking are immediate. After 20 minutes, your blood pressure and pulse return to normal. After 24 hours, your lungs start to clear. After three days you can breathe more easily and your energy increases. Keep it up and you’re adding years to your life. Research shows that people who quit smoking by the age of 30 add 10 years to their life. For help with quitting, including what your GP can do and nicotine replacement therapies, visit Smokefree today. Activity Sheffield’s advice is to make your goals realistic - as the surest way to fall short of your goal is to make it unattainable! For instance, resolving to NEVER eat your favorite food is setting you up to fail. Instead, strive for a goal such as avoiding it more often than you do now. Making a ‘Pros’ and ‘Cons’ list can really help. You can develop this list over time and refer to it when you need help keeping your resolve. Don’t keep your resolution a secret! Talking about it with your friends and family members will help your resolve and you can motivate each other. If you’ve done well, it’s also a great idea to reward yourself by treating yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution - like a new top for the gym or by going to the cinema with a friend. Keep track of each small success. Short-term goals are easier to keep - and each small accomplishment will help to keep you motivated. Instead of focusing on exercising every day, focus on three times per week. Don’t beat yourself up if you have the occasional slip - as this won’t help you to achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day - and take one day at a time! www.activitysheffield.org.uk. For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk | 45

The New Year is traditionally a time when resolutions are made. People vow to eat better, exercise more and try to become the best version of themselves. This year, instead of booking a new gym class like many others, why not book a blood donation appointment instead? NHS Blood and Transplant is asking people in Sheffield to consider spending an hour of their time to donate blood in the New Year. With each blood donation potentially saving or improving up to three lives, this good deed can help more people than your average resolution. Every blood donation is vital, but NHS Blood and Transplant particularly needs to ensure supplies of the universal blood group O Rh Negative which is often in short supply as demand is so great. They also need to ensure supplies of the rarer blood groups A Rh Negative, B Rh Negative and AB Rh Negative. To book an appointment to donate visit www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 2323 to find your nearest session. It’s also easy to book through mobile apps for Windows, Android and Apple devices. Every day, around 76 people are diagnosed with cancer in the Yorkshire and Humber region. That’s why Cancer Research UK is calling on Sheffield women of all ages, shapes and sizes, to defy this dreadful disease by entering Race for Life 5k at Meadowhall on Sunday May 17, or the 5k, 10k or Pretty Muddy event at new venue, Rother Valley on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of events which raise millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research. Emma Colbourne, Cancer Research UK’s Sheffield Events Manager, said: “We’re calling on Sheffield’s mighty-mums, gutsy-grans, feisty friends and go-getting girls to join our formidable army and take on cancer at this year’s Race for Life. Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not

about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun - or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer.” Everyone who takes part in Race for Life, from the participants themselves to the millions of supporters who sponsor and encourage them, becomes part of a powerful collective force rising up to beat cancer sooner. Last year, over 4,000 women took part in Race for Life in Sheffield and raised nearly £210,000. This year, organisers need 8,000 women and girls across Meadowhall and Rother Valley to stride out to help raise over £400,000. Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its groundbreaking work but, with help from the people of Sheffield, the charity intends to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

Genting Goal

Rock It Back in t’day (80s/90s,like), Sheffield had a thriving rock scene – with the likes of the Wapentake, Rebels and The Sportsman ruling the roost. All are now consigned to history and teary convos over a few double halves. But, recently, a Phoenix arose from the flames – for, from the ashes of The Sportsman, has been born The Yorkshireman Rock Bar. Having changed both name and ethos many times over the years, the original Yorkshireman’s Arms in the 80s was also a rock behemoth on the circuit. The back end of 2014 saw the golden days once again returning to the iconic venue. Based on Burgess St, smack bang in the city centre, you can now expect the very best rock nights that Sheffield has to offer – with one heck of a late licence. Dj Lez Wright spins the best classic rock tunes for you every Friday and Saturday from 8pm until 2am - with guest DJs continuing the party until 6am. There’s also a great collection of Rock memorabilia adorning the walls of the newly refurbed venue - with items from Motley Crue, Guns ‘N Roses, Led Zeppelin and, of course, Sheffield’s own legendary Def Leppard all on show (not to mention a fab beer garden for when those warmer nights return). Add to this the likes of biker reunions, Rebels nights, after-show parties (when your favourite rock groups come to town) and the promise of live bands in the new year - and what you’ve got is the ultimate party venue in which to unleash your rock beast.

A fundraising event compered by Sheffield Wednesday legend David Hirst recently scored a big hit for autism charities. Guests at the Genting Club gave generously to raise £15,300 - with the proceeds split between the National Autistic Society, the Autism Plus charity in Sheffield and the Autism Centre at Sheffield Hallam University. The St Paul’s Place hotspot hosted a sell-out lunch for 240 people followed by entertainment from a comedian and a singer, a speaker from the National Autistic Society and a prize draw. Guests enjoyed a drinks reception as well as a £5 gaming chip. The event was organised by fundraisers John Tompkins and his daughter Alex Tunney, together with the event’s singer, Jamie Butler, whose six-year-old son Kieran has autism. Casino General Manager, Kath Barton, said: “Everyone had a great time - David Hirst was a fantastic host. We were pleased to support this worthy cause and help the organisers raise such a significant sum.” Nice work, folks. See www.gentingcasinos.co.uk/club/ sheffield for more.

Little Italy Gigi’s Cucina is a brand new authentic Italian restaurant just opened on Oakbrook Road. The restaurant is owned by Loretta Giaimo and her father, head chef Gigi. Gigi previously worked at Pizzeria Giobanni on Ecclesall Road back in the 1970s before moving down south. His children came back to study in Sheffield and, like many graduates, decided to stay. Lorretta said: “We are trying to create a homely restaurant - but without going down the clichéd route. We want to keep it authentic and not put too much on the menu that people will recognise.Just fresh, local ingredients, and nothing too fancy.” The dishes are inspired by Gigi’s Italian heritage and his love for contemporary Italian food following his upbringing in Sicily - with a special emphasis on seasonal See www.gigiscucina.co.uk for more

Pickled Pair Resolves To Be Good Sustainability. It’s a funny word. To some of us, it’s like another language, to others it’s over-used and meaningless. Some, actually, forgive the language and live the proper good life (let’s face it, we all secretly want to be Tom and Barbara). In spite of the oddities, most of us understand the need (even if we don’t bother) to sustain ourselves. We know we can’t live on Hendo’s and Walkers plain for ever - so we draft in some purple-sprouting and the odd heritage veg here and there (and a mint tea to balance the copious glasses of vino and real ale). This January, though, @Pickled_Pair will be sharing her thoughts on sustainability - and how she sees Sheffield as the first truly sustainable city for food. Las Iguanas

8-9 West One, Fitzwilliam Street, S1 4JP Tel: 0114 252 1010 // www.iguanas.co.uk. The PLace It’s a cold, wet, dark December evening – but, walking through the doors of Las Iguanas, we’re instantly transported to sunnier climes. Holding court in West One, the vibrant Latin American restaurant offers a welcoming party atmosphere where you can forget about the wintery world outside for a while and enjoy a whole host of authentic dishes – from Mexico to Brazil and beyond. The Food Warmly greeted and seated, a bottle of Las Iguanas’ Spanish Garnacha aids our selection process. To start, it had to be the classic Albondigas for me. Usually a good barometer for judging Latin American restaurants, these were a mouth-watering mix of lamb fused with apple, mint, parmesan and a seasonal pinch of nutmeg – all beautifully braised in a rich tomato, mint and mild red chilli sauce, topped with Parmesan. Based on an authentic Patagonian recipe, they were simply to die for. For my partner, it was all about the Pato Taquito – rich shreds of roast duck and caramelised onion rolled in a flour tortilla and chargrilled, with a spicy cranberry salsa. A fantastic

fusion of flavours that was swiftly devoured. Onto the mains – Chimichanga and ‘The Full Enchilda’. The former, a deep fried delight, packed with Mexican smoked chipotle chicken, onion and cheese, complemented by homemade tomato salsa, soured cream, spring onion and garlic – surrounded by delicious rice and refried beans – the latter, a titanic tortilla filled with spicy chicken, pepper, onion and cheese, sunk in refried beans and drowned in a smoky chilli sauce. Both rustic, hearty numbers, that really hit the spot - offering the perfect balance of flavour and heat. To finish, the intriguing Capirotada – a sinful cinnamon, date, bread and brioche pudding smothered in arequipe sauce and date syrup – that was deceptively light and a true treat. Highly recommended. The VeRdIcT I’m a big advocate that food should be filling, thrilling and fun – and Las Iguanas ticks all the boxes. Not afraid to put their own unique twist on the classics, a meal here is akin to eating out on holiday… so, book your trip today, yeah?

Strictly Come Dancing favourite, ladies’ man and all round entertainer - Brendan Cole is a pretty busy fella. Not only has he just finished his 12th year as a dance partner on Strictly, he’s also heading up a pretty big show of his own next month. Exposed caught up with Brendan to chat about it. Happy new Year! Did you make any resolutions? Thanks, you too! I’m not really a New Year’s Resolution kinda’ person, to be honest with you. I’m more of a ‘if you want to do it, just do it’ type person. If I feel I’m eating too much I’ll just start eating less, or if something needs to change I’ll change it there and then, I don’t need to wait until January 1st to do so! good attitude. Let’s move on to Strictly. Your partner Sunetra Sarker made amazing progress on the show! I’ve got to say she really, really surprised me. Luckily, Sunetra was a very quick learner with a lot of natural ability, so it didn’t take much to whip her into shape! Sometimes you can spend hours with someone trying to teach them something and it’ll take ages for them to pick it up. I didn’t have that with Sunetra, we just built on her strengths. So, who would your dream celebrity dance partner be? Ooh, that’s a difficult one! I have to say, last year Sophie-Ellis Bextor was an absolute dream to work with. We had a really great time and did very well in the competition - so in some ways she was my dream partner. I also loved working with Kelly Brook, and although she wasn’t the most talented dancer; Jo Wood. She was so much fun. It’s about being able to get along well as well as dance ability, because obviously you end up spending a lot of time together. Your upcoming show A night To Remember is hitting Sheffield February 4. What can we expect from it? Everything! Although it’s not a Strictly show, it is Strictly based to an extent. It will be very intimate, so think of it as being like ‘An Audience with Brendan

Exposed Meets Brendan Cole. Words: Emily Beaumont.

Cole’. It will be bigger and better than everything else I’ve done, I’ve got 8 dance acts and lots of musicians - it’s going to be full-on variety. Your previous shows Unjudged and License to Thrill were both very well received by critics. is there more pressure this time around for the show to live up to its predecessors? There’s more pressure for myself. I’m quite proud and like to put everything together myself. This isn’t a show where a production company has done everything and I’ve just signed my name to it. I’m very involved in all aspects - including hand picking the dancers and musicians. With the music, I’ve selected a mix of tracks due to the vast age of the audience. There will be young people, grandmas and granddads and everything in between, so you’ve got to pick music that will appeal to everyone. Speaking of dancers, you’ve got French Dancing With The Stars champion Fauve Hautot and german dancer Patrick Helm joining you. Are there any special qualities you look for in your supporting dancers? There is. They have to be incredible. There’s little point in having a beautiful woman who can’t Waltz just as beautifully! As well as exquisite dance ability, they have to have star quality; they need to be able to hold the stage on their own. I’ve got such a diverse mix of dancers. Fauve is ridiculously famous in France, she really has that star quality where she just demands attention whilst on stage. Then there’s Kai Widdrington who’s just fantastic and, bloody hell, he’s so endearing! Presence is everything! Finally then, what are the plans for after the tour? Well, it’s a long one! I’m always busy with Strictly from August to December, and then I’ve got two weeks off, then I’m on the tour - so April to July is my family time. We usually go on holiday around that time. I also keep busy with my dance academies. I’m always busy!

Do you believe in ghosts? Legendary local storyteller, psychic and medium Mr P Dreadful from Steel City Ghost Tours will ensure you do. Taking you on a tour around the city, immerse yourself in the secrets of Sheffield’s grim and grizzly past. Now in its tenth year, Steel City Ghost Tours has established itself as a must-attend event in Sheffield - delivering stories both new and old. Exposed caught up with Mr Dreadful himself to chat exorcisms, developing stories and a seven foot ghost called Earnest! So mr Dreadful, what would you give yourself as a job title? That’s a very good question! Probably ‘Professional Scarer of Children’. So how did you get into the ghost tours around Sheffield? They’ve become pretty legendary… Yeah, we’ve been going for a decade; this year will be ten years. And it’s been dark, it’s been cold, it’s been wet most of the time. We’re out there telling the stories of the city and the ancestors of Sheffield that have passed over - sometimes in spectacular fashion! And did your interest start from a young age? Well, when I started the ghost walks, it was a joke! I was unemployed and pretty flippant and pedantic in the job centre. They asked what I wanted to do as a business so I said I’d start a ghost walk. I don’t know where it came from. So they sent me to a business school, they said it won’t work, and I said if eight people tour on the first year that’ll be a success. Ten years later the fastest selling ghost book in the United Kingdom, film work, magazine work, two exorcisms and newspaper articles. i like how you casually throw in two exorcisms! We’re kind of a last resort for people. It’s been interesting… the things I’ve seen! We’ve got researchers who come with us to make sure we know what we’re doing and how we do it. in the early days, did you read up on everything yourself, and was it more of a hobby? Well I’m a psychic and a medium as well. I’ve seen ghosts since I was a child. I actually thought everybody could until my mum sat me down one day and told me to stop being morbid and I suddenly realised that everybody couldn’t. I’ve even got a spirit guide and, I know it sounds insane, but it’s not an Indian, it’s not a Chinese man, it’s a guy who’s seven foot with an afro who comes from Brooklyn called Earnest - and he’s a disco diva. It’s really bizarre. Crikey. ‘mr Dreadful’ isn’t your real name… is it? (Laughs) No, my real name’s Darren. To me ‘Darren’ sounds like a nice friendly character who’ll buy you a pint down the local pub.

62 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

(Laughs) Yeah, that’s not too far off the point actually! But i’ve heard your character completely shifts when you become mr Dreadful… It’s amazing how many people have said they see me physically change. People have said it’s just like looking at some Victorian rogue - especially if I’m smiling apparently. So what are the main changes? I really don’t know, I just put the hat on and it’s there. It’s a character. I could be having the worst day in the world and as soon as I put the hat on - that’s it! Nobody would know. Then as soon as I take the hat off I’m just Darren again. Sounds schizophrenic almost! moving onto your ghost walks, do you get some big reactions? Well, we get some very different reactions, depending on which night we’re actually running. We run Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday of every week of the year. Our Wednesday night one is a bit more gruesome, a bit more gothic horror, but the stories we tell are actually eye witness reports - so after getting the reports we then we do six months research and that’s on every single story. But yeah, we’ve had people faint, we’ve had people cry because some of these stories are quite heart-breaking. You’ve also spoken about Sheffield’s history; there were a lot of workhouses, a lot of steelworks, industrial accidents, The Blitz… The Blitz on December the 12th, 1940, as far as we know was terrifying. The fires of the buildings lit the sky and you could see them as far as Leeds. There were bodies everywhere. Some of the stories we’ve got from that are incredible. It’s amazing how many people who lived through that time period have said to me ‘You’ve got it right’. They’re amazed that someone my age can put into words the fear and how they felt. You just can’t imagine it. i’ve got to ask; do you have a favourite ghost in Sheffield? There’s actually a couple. There are nurses in a certain public house, the Hounds of Gabriel, and the third one would be at a pub down near the bus station - a seven year old boy called Pierre who pulls peoples’ hair. We had a young girl on one of the tours once who kept shouting at her friend for pulling her hair, I was actually telling a different story at the time, and I told her to stand with her back against the wall and you could see it moving about six inches! Steel City Ghost Tours operate Monday, Wednesday and Thursday each week through the year, leaving at 7.30pm from the Town Hall steps. For more info see www.steelcityghosttours.co.uk.

Exposed gets the lowdown on local improv show A Little Bit Racey. Words: Emily Beaumont. New improvised comedy show A Little Bit Racey has just launched on Cornucopia Radio and Sheffield Live. The show, which has already seen a host of local and national comic talent, is gathering further support from the Sheffield comic scene. We had a natter with co-founder Sam Hutchinson to find out more. Hiya Sam! First of all, tell us a bit about your show A Little Bit Racey Racey is an improvised comedy panel show for radio. The best thing about it, the platform upon which we build each show, is its unique, original format. It’s a wonderful idea, and I can say that without any bias because it’s not my own idea; the credit for that belongs to a guy called Henry Fosdike. We begin each episode with a loose script, providing instructions for panellists to race each other, over a round of just three minutes, to a particular destination. However, they each have with them a random assortment of objects, companions and modes of transport, which they must use to both help themselves and hinder their opponents. I went to university with Henry in Bournemouth and we test-drove the show on our student radio station, Nerve, in a broadcast that went on to become a regular, weekly outing. By the time we left university, I’d been producing the show for what felt forever, but I didn’t feel anywhere near finished. Inevitably, it just followed me when I moved up North. So why did you decide to get involved in a comedy radio show?

Racey’s format is a perfect fit for radio. It pushes the idea of radio being a ‘theatre of the mind’ to the extreme, delivering the most surreal scenarios and stories from topical and factual events. Following on from this, we’ve been inspired by the panel games which have been very popular on BBC Radio 4, in particular. Things like The Unbelievable Truth, Armando Iannucci’s Charm Offensive and Whose Line is it Anyway? For me, there are lots of similarities between Racey and The Unbelievable Truth especially, as both shows can become very silly and far-fetched owing to the nature in which panellists are trying to out-wit and out-smart each other. It’s always felt as though this was the sort of tone ‘Racey’ should be striving for. And we’ve been peering wistfully at BBC Radio 4 on the horizon ever since. What was the inspiration behind the name ‘A Little Bit Racey’? Henry had the name before I even became involved, and I thought it was catchy and solid. It sits nicely between the panel game itself being a literal ‘race’, against both another panellist and the clock, and the show pushing a few boundaries - and occasionally being quite risqué. I always tell the panellists to imagine that there’s a line they cannot cross,

for fear of being too offensive, but that they should feel free to go right up to it, poke it and dance around on it etc. Most comedians are very good at instinctively knowing where this line is. Why did you decide to launch the project here in Sheffield? Sheffield is gaining an increasingly strong reputation for its developments in media – the Children’s Media Conference and the Documentary Festival are held here, and Sheffield LIVE have launched a new TV channel recently. There’s also a strong presence of improvisation (Shakedown Comedy) and radio (Cornucopia Radio). Cornucopia is a particularly fantastic project. Peter Beeston, who runs it all by himself, has brought together so many comedians and writers and actors from in and around the city to produce a wealth of radio content. When we met earlier this year, I was delighted that he was interested in Racey and we went ahead and recorded a first series of the show for the now very popular Cornucopia Radio podcast. And, just like that, we’d launched with Cornucopia in Sheffield. Now, I’m very excited that there will be a brand new, second series being recorded soon, available on that same podcast as soon as February! The show keeps on going from strength to strength.

Turning headlines into punch lines, the gut busting comic doesn’t hold back as his outlandish gags on everything from current events to gender make even the most politically incorrect fan delightfully cringe at Brown’s brashness. ‘The World’s Most Outrageous Comedian’ is still far too rude for TV, so this live performance will be the only place to catch Roy Chubby Brown’s side splitting routine. www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk.

I spent an enjoyable night recently with local legend Graham Fellows, sipping Guinness in the Broomhill Tavern. Here’s what he had to say about what’s going on in the world of his comedy character John Shuttleworth - ahead of his appearance at the Crucible on February 24. Words: Mark Perkins So Graham, what can we expect from the forthcoming show? We’ve done a few preview shows, and they were a bit ropey - but with John, everyone assumes the mistakes are part of the show… they never are. But I’ve learnt to run with mistakes and not get anxious about them. You don’t build them in then? No, never, because I know they’re going to happen. In Nottingham, I was offered a hot meal instead of sandwiches, and I foolishly had curry and rice at about 6:30pm. It weighed a bit heavily on me and my mind was mush by 8pm. I forgot a lot of my words - but they still seemed to like it. I felt a little bit out of control - and there are quite a few new wordy songs. Next night I was back to the sandwiches and my secret ingredient - walnuts. I have a plentiful supply which I munch just before I go on. Do you keep them on the Yamaha keyboard? No, although I do take a banana on stage with me, but I keep it hidden, to one side, because it’s a bit eye catching. I don’t want people to be looking at that rather than me… so I hide it. There are two new songs that are going down very well. One in particular, called ‘Late Arrangement for an Early Tea’. It seems to have that instant recognition with the audience. Everyone knows, if you have an early tea, you’ve got to do things early. In the song, John’s wife Mary finally reveals that she doesn’t have to go out early after all, so they’ll have a late tea. The other song that’s going down very well is a ballad, called ‘Visiting Time’. When my dad was ill, before he died he was in the Northern General, and I used to visit regularly. When you visit someone regularly in hospital there’s something comforting about the routine, and I make a joke about that. In the song, John says he

was visiting Alan, the opera singer, but now he’s out of hospital he feels bereft because his routine is gone. What about the more familiar ones? I’m doing an old one, ‘Mingling with Mourners’, which I’ve never done live, which I think sums up funerals. I think I am drawn to writing songs about death; at least half the Shuttleworth songs do have a death element. It’s a very rich seam, writing amusing songs about everyday life, and it comes very natural to me. It’s harder to write a song like Three Times a Lady… or Easy. I cannot write songs like that. The thing is you’ve just got to write what comes naturally. My shows are all about the detail. People love that. I think it undercuts people’s expectations. They expect to be zapped by the show, and I just do the opposite, and just shuffle on. I remember Norman Lovett doing stand up and he’d come on with a miniature carton of orange juice, and a straw, he’d have a few sips and then ask ‘where am I going to put this?’ It

was very funny. Has your audience got older with you? No, I’d say about half of them are under 40 these days. They don’t want autographs anymore, they now want selfies. They’re second generation, and they tell me things like: ‘My dad forced Shuttleworth on me in the car all the way to Devon.’ I’m on Twitter and we’re approaching 50 000 followers.” You’ve been doing John Shuttleworth for a few years now. How did it all start? I’ll let you into a secret. I don’t think John Shuttleworth would be here now if it wasn’t for the Job Enterprise Allowance Scheme. In the late eighties, I was doing a few tapes as John Shuttleworth and putting them on audio cassette (still John’s preferred medium). Although I was writing a few songs and earning a crust, I was on the dole. I found I could get more money if I registered my business so I got a bank account as John Shuttleworth, printed business cards, and that encouraged me to start taking it a bit more seriously. Though

it hurts me to say it, I have Margaret Thatcher to thank for John Shuttleworth. There was an exciting Sheffield music scene at that time, but you were never part of it. No, I left King Edwards at 18, went to Manchester - and that was the city I was in love with. The first gig I played in Sheffield was The Leadmill, and then the Memorial Hal,l then the Crucible. Look North and Calendar were there. I used to be on there all the time. You’ve said before you’re planning to do some songs as Graham Fellows. Is that still a project you’re pursuing? I think it is a natural progression. When I started doing John Shuttleworth, I was trying to emerge as Graham Fellows, singer and performer. I did a few gigs around the country and I’d signed a publishing deal with Chappel Music, who were very excited by my songs as Graham Fellows, and then I created John Shuttleworth as a joke. Everyone got even more excited - and my career as Graham Fellows went onto the back burner. It’s off the back burner now and on the middle burner. It’s a big cooker. I nearly did something as Graham Fellows for Sensoria, and I did end up providing the narrator’s voice for the recent Kafka Chic radio docu-drama as part of this year’s festival. When I started, I thought John was 20 years older than me. I was 26, and I had John at 46. Now I’m 55 and I reckon John’s 58 - so it’s only right and proper that John should take a back seat. I want to do an album as myself, and tour as ‘An Evening with Graham Fellows’, perhaps with a few musicians, chatting about John Shuttleworth and Jilted John too - perhaps even perform his solitary hit once more. I performed it at the Big Chill recently and it went down well. I might do the ‘Paperboy Song’, which was all about my paper round in Broomhill. I used to deliver the Daily Telegraph to Sebastian Coe’s house. I miss that. You were filming in Sheffield last time we met. Can we expect another film sometime soon? It’s still a film project which I want to finish, some of which, you’re right, was filmed at dad’s sheltered accommodation in Broomhill - where John turns up to entertain the residents. Sadly, my dad died, so my enthusiasm for it went - but after this tour I do want to get it finished. At the moment it’s about too many things. My relationship with my dad, my son, and even my relationship with John Shuttleworth, but it needs a better edit. RBM Presents John Shuttleworth at the Crucible on Tuesday February 24. Submotion Orchestra

Hailing from Leeds, and exploring all genres from drum’n’bass to dubstep to jazz, Tuesday Club favourites Submotion Orchestra are, like, so hot right now. We caught up them recently for a lil’ chat about latest album ‘Alium’. What keeps you coming back to Tuesday Club every year? Bobby: It’s the best place to play in Sheffield! Simple. Your new album, ‘Alium’ was released November 24. How does the sound of this album compare to its predecessors? Dom: The first album was pretty rough… but in a nice lo-fi way. It was a new thing we were experimenting with. The second album, we tried to make it more clinical and perhaps, too electronic. This one is somewhere in-between. With the popularity of drum’n’bass,

do you think this has paved the way for you guys to become more mainstream? Dom: It’s difficult, because you can make programmed stuff and poppy hooks, repeat the chorus five times and shove it on the radio. We don’t do that. Every gig we play, we’ve got people that say, ‘Why aren’t you promoted here, there and everywhere?’ At the end of the day, that doesn’t matter, as long as we’ve got an audience to come see us play. If you could go back in time and give yourself some music advice, what would it be? Bobby: Pay attention in school! [Laughs] Danny: For me, there was this thing of what was and wasn’t cool - and it shapes you as a musician. I really wish I could go back in time and tell myself, ‘Forget that! Listen to it all!’ Make your own mind up - whether a piece of music moves you or not.

Talented street dance troupe Diversity took to the Motorpoint Arena stage recently to perform their fifth UK tour. Last year they delivered the outstanding ‘Limitless’ tour, which received so much positive feedback from critics and fans alike that it has returned, but this year it was bigger and better than ever! Every child has once hoped that they would one day discover they had superpowers - and ‘Limitless – The Reboot’ was a projection of this dream. The story centred on good and evil, the protectors and the destroyers, two sides of superhuman power that battle against one another. Diversity told the story through imaginative choreography and the use of stunning visual effects - incorporating intense colour, smoke, fire and snow into a highly energetic and enjoyable show - proving that Diversity are not only dancers, but true performers. THE LADY BOYS OF BANGKOK WHERE: DEVONSHIRE GREEN WHEN: DECEMBER 5

I won’t lie. When it comes to entertainment, I’m unashamedly a Butlin’s kinda boy. The cheesier, the camp-er, the more embarrassing… the better – so praise be for them there Ladyboys of Bangkok. Descending upon Dev Green for the second year running, this latest tour once again saw a host of classic party anthems being performed by the troupe. They sang (well, mimed… badly), and they danced (again, badly) – but that’s the point. Some people don’t get it. Fortunately, the majority do. For me, personally, it’s simply good old fashioned cabaret. Who gives a toss if they’ve got knackers and knockers? This ain’t a strip show – it’s grown up giggles for those after nowt more than an evening of eccentric entertainment. Next time they’re in town, leave any prejudice at the door, let the effervescent energy wash over you - and I guarantee you’ll leave grinning from ear to ear. Carl Reid.

EXPOSED MEETS PETER STRINGFELLOW. Local leg-end, and notorious ladies’ man, Peter Stringfellow is currently gearing up to take his Stringfellows brand to every major city in Europe. Joe Moulam chats to the king of clubs himself to find out more about his journey from Sheffield lad to international nightclub icon. So, believe it or not, you were one of the very first people we interviewed for Exposed when we launched over twelve years ago… thanks for talking to us again! Ah, that’s fantastic, can’t say I remember it though I’m afraid (laughs). That’s quite a while back! Glad we made a lasting impression! Now, you come from our glorious home town of Sheffield, what was life like growing up in the Steel City? I definitely still feel fondly for Sheffield - and I never forget where I began. We lived in Pitsmoor, in what was known affectionately as ‘Steelworker Cottages’, but they were basically slums. We were happy though, and I didn’t know any different until I met the posh kids at school age twelve – before that the word ‘rich’ wasn’t even in my vocabulary. Then, after I joined the merchant navy, I came home from travelling the world and my parents had moved to Gleadless Valley with luxuries like indoor toilets. Your club career began with The Black Cat Club. What inspired you to start on that path? The short, blunt, truth is that I saw a way to make money; it wasn’t initially for a love of music. Though there was a band I thought was great, and still do, called Johnny Tempest and the Cadillacs and I booked them at the local church - which became The Black Cat Club. I earned £85 on my first night - which was a massive amount as I was previously making £20 for a whole week’s work as a delivery driver for a bakery. Later, when I was the manager for Johnny and the Cadillacs, I tried to get them a booking and ended up getting a job myself compèring - because I wouldn’t stop talking!

78 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

And you managed to book The Beatles on the cusp of their success… Yes, I’ve always had a knack for spotting the next big thing. We had lots of bands in after they’d released just one single, like The Kinks and The Rolling Stones. I booked The Beatles for £65 back in 1963, just before they released Please Please Me, that was a massive amount of money for an unknown band - but I knew they’d be big. We sold so many tickets that the gig was moved to Azena Ballroom, which has now been turned into a supermarket. I went in and realised the stage where John Lennon had been playing was now the bakery counter. Amazing. It sounds like you had some big names for a small club in Sheffield then… We had The Small Faces, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, Fleetwood Mac – the list goes on. If you name a band from the 60s or 70s, they’ve probably played at one of my clubs. So, Stringfellows has obviously been a massive success, but why the move from music into the world of Gentleman’s clubs? Well, I was expanding into America, with Stringfellows New York, Miami and Beverly Hills in LA. But the economic recession of the 90s really hit me hard. It was all my own money in those clubs – I was the owner, and they had to be closed. I’d seen a striptease club in Miami called Pure Platinum and thought the idea was amazing - so we started it in New York in 1990 under the name ‘Stringfellows presents Pure Platinum’ and the table dancing took off. I saw the same opportunities for a club in London - and the rest is history. The brand is expanding massively over the next couple of years, most recently Paris. You’re definitely not resting on your laurels then..? I still love the business… this is what I do. The Stringfellows brand is obviously very sought after, and rightly so; we’re in talks to open locations in most of the major cities of Europe. Exciting times.

Got a touch of the January blues? Well don’t fret me ol’ mucker, because our resident cheeky monkey has taken time out of his busy schedule of drinking and chasing skirt to compile a list of the best uplifting tunes to banish those January blues. Vampire Weekend – A-Punk

Sheffield super group the bootleggers will be taking to the beer X stage when the highly anticipated event returns to iceSheffield march 20-21. We caught up with guitarist/vocalist russ to find out more. What was your highlight of 2014? 2014 was a tremendous year for The Bootleggers! My personal highlight was supporting Heaven17 in front of about 3000 people at Music In The Gardens. There were other memorable gigs, for example The White Rose Awards in Harrogate, Western Park Charity Ball at Magna and numerous weddings and corporate events. Was the festive period busy for you guys? Christmas 2014 was typically very busy for The Bootleggers, with a seven date residency at Double Tree Hotel (Hilton), Sheffield. We played at all of their Christmas parties and in between played at R.A.F Cranwell, Lincolnshire, for the flying officer’s graduation celebration. NYE was at The Pastures Lodge, Mexborough. What can we expect from your performance at the BeerX festival? Our set will be a high energy, all singing/dancing collection of the most popular cover songs from artists such as The Killers, The Jam, Free, Queen, Depeche Mode, Kings of Leon, Stevie Wonder, Madness, Journey, Black Eyed Peas, The Clash, The Beatles and many more. The set is designed to keep the revellers on the dance floor all night. If you could go drinking with any celebrity at BeerX who would it be and why? If he were alive, I’d love to go drinking at BeerX with the legendary Rat Pack ‘chairman of the board’ – Frank Sinatra. He was a renowned party goer and enjoyed the ‘odd tipple’ - I think his favoured drink was Jack Daniels on the rocks - but at The Beer X festival I think he’d have tried some of the local brews. I think he’d have had a boogie to The Bootleggers as well - and maybe jumped up on stage to sing us the odd song. Head to www.beerx.org for more on beerX and check out www. bootleggersweb.co.uk for all things bootleggers. 82 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

There’s a fine line between a bouncy, happy-jangly guitar track and insufferably annoying, ear-grating hipster crap. I like to think that this track perfectly toes that line. Set this as your alarm clock and I guarantee you’ll skip around your bedroom each morning while pulling on your vintage Ralph Lauren jumper and digging out your favourite pair of boat shoes. God bless the hipsters.

Notorious B.I.G. – Juicy

“It was all a dream…” – if you’re not nursing a semi-on/wideon immediately after the first line of this song, then you have no soul, brother/sister. I won’t go on about it, but this monkey grew up in Brooklyn Zoo… and times were tough. When I used to hustle with the penguins, we’d have this tune blaring out the boombox to inspire us that, one day, we would make it. And look at me now, I’ve got me own deluxe treehouse in Kelham Island. Booyakasha!

Katrina & The Waves – Walking on Sunshine

I first met our lass in t’Forum on a Friday neet. Naturally, I tried it on straightaway, but she accused me of being pissed. I let out a long sigh, looked into her eyes, and said: “Baby, I ain’t drunk… I’m just intoxicated… by you.” DEAL. SEALED.

Survivor – Eye of The Tiger

I once had a scrap with a tiger outside Walkabout. He accused me of trying it on with his Gertrude (I was) and offered me out. After exchanging blows for a few minutes, he grabbed me firmly by the monkey conkers and offered to call a truce. I agreed, and we nipped over to Chicken Stop to share a messy kebab. Funny night, that…

The Libertines – Time for Heroes

All you ‘trendy’ b*stards walking round with your furry beards. How long did it take you to grow that arsefluff, eh? I’ve been rocking the stuff all over my body from DAY ONE. Oooh, do you like it baby? Yes, it is smooth. Of course, you can stroke it, darling. You want to smell it? Oh, if you insist…

...now get thee forth and listen. Otherwise the monkey will be displeased. Never displease the monkey. http://tinyurl.com/o8dbyu9

Funeral For A Friend Chapter and Verse

The Welsh rockers are back with their latest opus - Chapter and Verse. Can you believe it’s been eleven years since that era-defining ‘Casually Dressed and Deep in Conversation’ debut album? When they first burst onto the scene, they were considered as the saviours of rock music, giving it a re-energising youthful stamp. Now, alas, they’ve deteriorated into a clatter of dated sounds and bland lyrics. Unfortunately, they’re just not the youthful and vibrant Funeral for a Friend we used to remember. The first track that the public will get a taste of is ‘You’ve Got a Bad Case of The Religions’ which, to be honest, is unforgivably clichéd and offers nothing new. The lyrics have become unashamedly political; dealing with a range of topics from inequality to feminism – not a criticism if the quality of the music befitted the lyrics. Undoubtedly, you can hear how much they have grown with experience through their lyrics, especially in the song ‘Brother’ that sees the band take a slightly acoustic turn at the beginning - but this has compromised on their ability to put a song together effectively throughout the whole album. Chapter and Verse was recorded in just two weeks, which is hardly surprising - as you can hear the lack of effort that has gone into it. Nice try though, lads. Chloe Martin 2/10

PumPin’ On mi StereO Milburn – These Are The Facts

There’s a tried and tested formula to bring tears to the eyes of even the most hardened Sheffield music fan: start talking about Milburn. The band were hugely revered throughout the city, and after Well, Well, Well received some kudos from music hacks around the UK, they seemed destined to join their Arctic Monkey muckers for a lengthy and fruitful spell in the charts. This album saw the band aim to build on their success by bringing out a progressive, melodic offering brimming with groove and nods to 60’s blues rock. However, once the same circles that criticised them for ‘copying’ AM-style social commentary in earlier songs began complaining about the lack of such content, there didn’t appear to be anywhere else to go. Music moves on, and times change, but I listen to ‘Rubicon’ and think this album deserved much better. Joe Food

Wu-Tang Clan A Better Tomorrow It’s been just over twenty years since the release of the seminal ‘36 Chambers’ that brought the world a tribe of oddball barbed tonged bards melding the gritty realities of 90s New York with Kung-Fu references and Eastern philosophy. Now, touted as an anniversary album, comes the group’s sixth studio effort ‘A Better Tomorrow’. The Clan have returned with a more mature and multifaceted sound but, while there are modern influences to be heard, the album does get stuck in the realm of tried-and-tested soul sampling hip hop. There’s a definite nostalgic longing for the old days – the tracks are peppered with call-backs to old lines and the ubiquitous martial arts films samples are ever present - which makes the record at times feel slightly formulaic. The saving grace comes in the dexterous lyrical quality, with each member flexing their respective rapping muscles at some point. However, a fair share of the verses feel phoned-in, the product of obligation rather than passion and just sixteen bars to fill the gaps between hooks; which isn’t a good thing when the hooks themselves are the weakest point of the album. However, there is definitely some great material nestled here, with album highlight ‘Ruckus In B Minor’ showcasing RZA’s soul infused dirty beats at their best. Ultimately though, the anthemic cries of “Wu-Tang Clan ain’t nothing to f*ck with” are sounding less and less intimidating. Joe Moulam 6/10

Belle and Sebastian Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance Despite being consistently lauded by critics, Glasgow’s Belle and Sebastian have had a considerably small amount of commercial success. The indie-pop group may be BRIT and NME award winners, but their music has so far not quite reached vast audiences. Frontman Stuart Murdoch has discussed his influences for the album as being his life before putting Belle and Sebastian together. His lyrics have never been written in first person- at least not until now. ‘Girls in the Peacetime Want to Dance’ is Murdoch’s life, a lyrical account of being housebound whilst suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Opening track ‘Nobody’s Empire’ is particularly reminiscent of this, the lyrics are tinged with pain and loneliness, but the electric dance elements give it that glimmer of hope. The rest of the album hits similar chords, each song so fragilely written, presiding over landscapes of sadness and isolation. This is how pop music should be. Emily Beaumont 8/10

PAul HeATon & JAqui ABBoT WHERE: SHeffield City Hall WHEn: deCember 4

I recall first establishing a fondness for Paul Heaton’s music during a family holiday to Withernsea as a young’un. The sheer naivety of my parent’s decision to spend a fortnight caravanning in sunny old Yorkshire was exposed as it chucked it down relentlessly. As a result, we spent days on end trapped inside the caravan with nothing but a CD player and a pack of Top Trumps for entertainment. However, on the bright side, playing continuously in the background we had ‘Soup: The Best of The Beautiful South & The Housemartins’. So, with bittersweet memories of a sodden campsite in East Yorkshire on my mind, we took our seats in the balcony of Sheffield City Hall, and found ourselves immediately greeted by the swinging sounds of folk ‘n’ blues four piece, Dai & The Ramblers. After further melody-laden support from Dry The River, the stage was set for one of pop’s most unlikely double-acts to make their entrance. Unlikely because, well, could you imagine Olly Murs walking onstage in a Stone Island jacket and proclaiming his support for a trade union? Of course you couldn’t. And the fact that the 15-million-album-selling Heaton has always remained consistent with his principles goes some way to explaining his popularity up north. The set saw a well-judged mix of old classics and new material from latest album, What Have We Become? Jacqui’s vocals were flawless as ever - and their synergy on stage remains strong and a joy to watch. Paul kept the crowd entertained throughout with amusing anecdotes; he dedicated One Last Love Song to a young sweetheart who copped off with his mate at Sheaf Valley Baths. I’d strongly advocate the case that Heaton is one of the most underrated love song writers over the last thirty or so years, and I’m not ashamed to admit that his performance of Prettiest Eyes brought a few tears to mine. The set ended after two encores - with final song, Caravan of Love, bringing the whole crowd to their feet. A great evening from arguably two of the most honest pop stars you’ll ever meet. Joe Food.

Hi Stevi, how’s it going today? I’m very good thank you. It’s been probably one of the busiest weeks of my life, but I can’t complain at all. I like to be busy, I’m not the type to lie down and be lazy! I can imagine! A lot of people, Simon Cowell especially, were surprised at how well you did in the competition, did you expect to make it this far? God no! I’ll be honest; I never expected to make it past the first round, never mind so far in the live shows. I mean you have the first round which is with the producers and when I started it was a bit of a joke, just wondering how far I could go. This was my seventh year auditioning. It got to this year; Simon was back, so I thought it was time to give it another go. It was a dream come true and Simon has been an excellent mentor. Speaking of Simon, is he still Mr Nasty offscreen? Honestly, Simon is one of the nicest men I have ever met. He’s absolutely lovely, genuine, kind and so charismatic. Going for a meal with him was absolutely mind-blowing, on par with a thousand orgasms! He’s not only a mentor, but now a friend. It’s not been that long but I’m missing him already! Speaking of contestants, Jake Quickenden has gone straight into I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here after leaving The X Factor. Would you ever consider reality TV? Definitely! If they contacted the agency, and said they wanted me for I’m a Celeb, I’d throw myself into it - it’d be fantastic! By no means do I consider myself a celebrity though, I’m just a bloke who’s got a bit of a profile at the moment. As long as people still like me, I’d take on anything within reason.

Fab! So unfortunately you didn’t quite grab The X Factor winner title, but there is still the X Factor live tour coming up! Which Stevi Ritchie performances are we going to be seeing again? I’d love a bit of Living La Vida Loca! I’ve got to agree! I loved that performance on my first week. I had all the beautiful dancers around me rubbing me up! I also loved Footloose, which was a lot of fun. Music of the Night, that was great. Ooh, or maybe a bit of Bohemian Rhapsody. I just want to put on a massive show and get the audience involved. And finally Stevi, will there be a Stevi Ritchie album any time soon? [Laughs] I’m not sure about that! At the bottom of the 99p bargain bin in Sainsbury’s maybe! All jokes aside, who knows? I’ve got a very busy few months - so who knows after then. Simon holds the keys to the kingdom, so if he was kind enough to offer me an album deal, of course I would. It’d definitely be some cheesy uptempo music that you’d play before a night out, I’d love that!

Ahead of next month’s eagerly anticipated X Factor live tour, we caught up with the man who had eVeRYone talking about the show – Stevi Ritchie. interview: emily Beaumont. the X factor live tour 2015 hits Sheffield motorpoint arena march 5. 10 of etosthte! eguB toh ide ur ts you local aclo king e b should in 2o015! out for e Food. Words: Jo

2014 was yet another massive year for the Sheffield music scene. We saw new bands breaking through, older bands returning to the foray with fresh material and, sadly, we also witnessed some highly revered local acts depart our musical shores. But, as sure as the River Don continues to flow through the city centre, there’ll always be a steady stream of talented musicians grafting away in backstreet practice rooms dotted around Sheffield inspired by a fine musical heritage and, erm, Phil Oakey’s fringe. We could quite easily fill a big book – we’re talking Order of the Phoenix size, here – with all of the cracking acts plying their trade around the city at this moment in time. Unfortunately, we don’t quite have the same printing budget as JK Rowling, so we’ve had to settle on just ten bands who we reckon will be the talk of the town in 2015.

FaERgRound aCCidEnTS “Death to the dour!” is the war cry from Faerground Accidents and their loyal, ever-expanding group of supporters (Faeries). This month’s Exposed In Session stars have certainly shaken things up with their refreshingly unconventional look and psychotic pop sound which has smidges of Pulp, Suede and angsty Bowie wrapped up inside it. With the hype building, and radio airplay increasing, Faerground are becoming a hot tip for the top. Fingers crossed, eh?

HoWLS

As alluded to in the intro, we lost some mighty fine acts in 2014. When Dead Sons called it a day back in March, Sheffield’s music scene lost a load of catchy, ground-shaking riffs, and a fair bit of beard representation too. But it’s now time to dry your goddamn eyes, step away from that Gillette Mach razorblade and prepare for more dirty, seductive rock ‘n’ roll feels - as three of the sons reunite to create Howls. Brief snippets of what they’ve been up to in the studio have already whetted our appetite, and news of an album release next year has us positively gasping for some of that loud rock nectar. Feed us, Howls. FEED US.

THE Monday CLub

An indie-mod four piece with snappy dress sense and a well-polished sound. Heads first started turning after they released the infectious, Brit-pop ode ‘Itchy Feet’ back in April through Tiny Teeth Records. They followed it up with the equally accomplished ‘Time Ticks Away’ – performed as an exclusive for our September Exposed In Session. After seeing out 2014 with a successful UK mini-tour, including a support slot for Bruce Foxton’s From The Jam, they should be ready and raring to go for 2015.

REdFaCES

A wonderfully talented group of young musicians, who have a promising future ahead of them if they continue to produce the level of performance which saw them rock The Leadmill stage back in November. They only went and supported Toploader recently, an’all! We’d certainly recommend catching them live to see them at their best. You won’t regret it.

their spurs since with gigs all over the UK and sold-out hometown shows back in South Yorks. With experience of supporting the likes of The Enemy, The Buzzcocks, Reverend and The Makers and Simple Minds already under their belts, The Sherlocks will surely be looking to step up to the plate again next year.

SToP dRoP RoboT

Roughly ten seconds after I’d pressed play on ‘Charm is Glass’ I’d decided that I chuffin’ love this band - and really, really wanted them to bring out an album. No album as of yet, but ‘Morphine Dream’ is an EP which the band can be proud of, not to mention a must listen for anyone big on the Sheffield rock scene. A new music video for ‘Strange Folk’ was released in December - and hopefully shows that this doublepiece have big plans for 2015.

Sheffield’s electronica/hard rock hybrid rounded off their year by releasing a video for track ‘Clear Water’ taken from their latest EP ‘Tetralogy Aquaticus’. Not a sound for the faint-hearted, this band have continued to fly the flag for Sheffield’s affiliation with electronic music by fusing it with an intense heavy metal sound which is as innovative as it is engaging. They also deserve added kudos for helping to support fellow local bands – band member, Sam, hosts a YouTube panel show aimed at promoting the Sheffield music scene. Good lads, belting tunes.

It’s not a bad start when your debut single storms to fifth place in iTunes Alternative Chart and 92 in the UK Official Chart. That track was ‘Sing for the Moment’, which boasted an early Courteeners style sound to it, led brilliantly by winding guitar riffs and upbeat vocals. They’ve continued earning

Of course, High Hazels need no introduction to Sheffield music supporters; we’ve all been keeping an eye on these lads since 2012. Nonetheless, 2014 saw them make great strides with the release of their eponymous first album, which featured some of their strongest songs to date -

including single ‘Misbehave’ and the wonderful ‘Banging on my Door’. Expect them to build on 2014’s success this year.

THE HoKuM

Right. I’m unashamedly going to big up this band – despite you probably having no idea who they are – purely because I LOVE the sound they’ve made. Deep, drawling vocals with crashing guitars and daft, zany tunes. I implore you to listen to ‘Pigs’ and make up your own mind – it will grow on you. These probably won’t break through this year; but they at least deserve some more local love in my book.

oRdnanCE

Combining indie and dance to form what they call “New Culture”, Ordnance have nailed a sound which is intricate, contemporary and, at times, downright beguiling. Could this be the sound of the future? We’ll have to wait and see - but check out ‘Seamstress’ and ‘Shotgun or Snake’ and I can guarantee you’ll be intrigued to find out more. For the last night of their UK tour, and their final gig of 2014, Kasabian went all out. Hyping up the crowd with a time teasing countdown from 30 minutes before they appeared on stage, Tom and Serge opened under spotlights at the far end of either side, launching straight into ‘Bumblebee’ and kicking off a frenzy of synchronised jumping and crowdsurfing throughout the Motorpoint Arena. With two equally captivating frontmen, Kasabian have always had a stage presence that rivals most, and tonight was no different. Now at the height of their career following an epic Glastonbury set in the summer, the band have perfected songwriting and music making that’s designed to be played to a crowd of this size. The band smashed through a set covering all five albums with crowd pleasing hits ‘Eez-eh’, ‘Club Foot’ and ‘Re-wired’, as well as unlikely covers in the form of Cameo’s ‘Word Up’ and the ‘Ghostbusters’ theme tune - proving that, after ten years, Kasabian aren’t a band that take themselves too seriously. Lights, lazers and a string quartet of skeletons were at the forefront of the evening’s theatrics, providing an electric atmosphere as Kasabian delivered something somewhere between a rock ‘n’ roll show and a rave. It was a satisfied Sheffield as the encore wrapped up with hits ‘Stevie’, ‘Vlad The Impaler’, ‘Praise You’ (a very wellreceived Fatboy Slim Cover) and the finale of ‘L.S.F’. Plus, a brief round of ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’, of course. Rachel Heward.

The Best Glitches in Gaming

First up on this night of dirty riffs at The Washy were Wax Futures. These guys had a strong post hardcore sound with some pop punk riffs thrown in for good measure - a fun opener to warm up the beery crowd. Next were an unusual duo, that don’t have a moniker (both members were formerly of Temple of Coke). With two guitars and a backing track, their 15-minute segment was full of trippy visuals, robotic voices, blow up dolls and over-the-top guitar effects. Kurokuma headlined and, although they’re a relatively new name, this was an experience that was rather difficult to forget. This trio have somehow created a sludgey doom metal sound that blends seamlessly with tribal/samba beats. In terms of atmosphere, which led to something seriously dark and primal - albeit with the energy of a free party. Using extra percussion - like bongos and cowbells Kurokuma was an unrelenting torrent of power with a catchy, virile rhythm. Even people who aren’t necessarily fans of metal can enjoy this. New sounds are hard to describe but, suffice to say, the audience were mesmerised - and I’m intrigued as to what these potential kings of Sheffield sludge will do next. Samuel Siddall.

Well, I think it’s fair to call the first annual Winter Rocks at Corporation a success. To say this was an event with no history, a healthy, diverse crowd descended on Corp to enjoy some fine weekend rock and roll. Liberty Lies kicked things off on the main stage in the big room, and then local favourites, Regulus, started the party on the second stage in the small room. Times for the two stages were staggered against each other, allowing fans to get a taste of as many bands as possible, and there was a perfect balance of bigger names (The Answer, Heaven’s Basement) and local talent to feast on. By the time Black Spiders took the stage around 7pm, the crowd was nicely lubricated and packed into the main room, resulting in a great atmosphere to welcome the Sheffield heroes home. Another personal highlight was Goat Leaf closing the second stage - bluesy, fuzzy and as loud as usual, the band couldn’t stop thanking the fans for being part of such a great day. There aren’t too many festivals around this time of year, so Winter Rocks could occupy a nice gap in the calendar – and I look forward to seeing how it grows in 2015. Joe E. Allen.

Whilst glitches are generally considered a negative thing, for example you might get stuck in a wall without having saved your progress and then forced to reset your console losing everything you’d achieved there sometimes comes a time when a glitch can be beneficial or just plain hilarious. In no particular order, here goes… “W-item Duplication” (Final Fantasy Vii) One day I’ll stop banging on about Final Fantasy VII - but for now here’s one of the most famous glitches to date. By equipping the W-Item materia and entering a battle, you can actually duplicate any item through a clever trick of selecting an item, and then cancelling that last action out - which in turn duplicates the selected item. This is a very easy and quick way of obtaining maximum amounts of any item you wish such as X-Potions and Vagyrisk Claws. “BXR” (Halo 2) Ah, Halo 2, perhaps the glitchiest shooter of all time - but for all the right reasons. The BXR, a button combination, which if done correctly is able to instantly kill enemies – definitely beneficial in competitive gameplay. Pressing B initiates a melee attack, X cancels the previous action, and R (or right trigger) shoots - resulting in an instant combination of both a melee and gunfire… resulting in the death of your unfortunate opponent. There are plenty more glitches in the masterpiece that is Halo 2, but we’d be here all day. “invisible Treasure Chest” (TeS V: Skyrim) A glitch that’s especially useful earlier in the game if you’re stuck for items and gold, the invisible treasure chest located at Dawnstar contains lots of goodies. It’s just a treasure chest, right? Well, yes, but it’s completely invisible and can respawn - ultimately allowing access to some fantastic items at a moments notice. All you have to do is fast travel to Dawnstar, walk down the path until you come across a wheelbarrow next to a group of rocks, get yourself tucked in between the rocks by crouching (entering first-person is advised for accuracy), and slowly move your reticle until you see an option to open a chest and there you have it. For a respawn of the chest, simply visit any other town and wait for 10 days in-game. Not real life, that’d be ridiculous. “120 + lives” (Super Mario Bros.) If the original Super Mario Bros. is a little difficult, or you just want to exploit the game, here’s a nice trick that’ll net you over 120 lives in just a few minutes. First of all, make your way to world 3-1 and reach the end where you’ll encounter two Koopa Troopers making their way down the stairs. Kill the first, and wait until the second reaches just the edge of a step, then jump on him repeatedly. You should notice your life count is rapidly increasing - as every time you “kill” the Koopa, you’re gaining an additional life. “laddergoat” (Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood) Not useful in any way at all, but hilarious none the less, this glitch was discovered by Dopelives.com - in which the player discovers a goat wandering around in the game. Nothing unusual there. Then, for some reason, the goat begins to float in the air - and then proceeds to “climb” a nearby ladder as it’s pushed towards it. What follows is one of the funniest reactions ever to a glitch – check out the full video on YouTube.

Annie

On paper, the idea of remaking Annie - best known to most of us in the form of the 1982 musical - is a fool’s errand. After all, the remakes of both Fame and Footloose largely failed to garner praise from either critics or audiences, so what could possibly set Annie apart? The answer is that writer/director Will Gluck simply avoids the pitfall of aspiring to iconic levels and instead focuses on updating the story for a generation of young twenty-first century girls to admire and enjoy. Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis takes on the titular role of New York orphan Annie, here rescued from the path of a speeding truck by billionaire-turned-aspiring mayoral candidate; Jamie Foxx.

Cheery, upbeat and the very definition of family friendly; young girls will fall for Annie hook, line and sinker; but more importantly parents will enjoy it as well. Wallis is affable enough in the lead, Foxx is called upon to do nothing he hasn’t done ably before; while Byrne is an absolute trooper in the surrogate mother/personal assistant role - clearly having an infectiously good time at the centre of it all. Foxx may be the only cast member capable of carrying a tune, and the film is unlikely to change the course of narrative cinema; it will however set the box office alight over the holiday season, a perfect goofy and uplifting musical outing for a family with young children.

Behind it: Will Gluck in it: Quvenzhané Wallis, Cameron Diaz, Jamie Foxx

A solid and whimsically enjoyable update of the classic children’s character erases any memory of last year’s godawful Postman Pat movie. With jokes that hit the mark every time, a great cast and a perfectly balanced script; it’s an adventure for all the family.

Given the somewhat deranged mentality of the real John du Pont, it’s very curious that Bennett Miller’s recounting of his misguided attempt to coach the US wrestling team would focus on precisely that, and not on du Pont himself - depicted here by a top-of-his-game Carell. A cold and calculating drama perfectly in step with Miller’s body of work, Foxcatcher is most clearly an actor’s piece, eschewing the more natural path of fixating on Carell’s du Pont more in favour of the wrestler’s stories - specifically Tatum and Ruffalo as the Schultz brothers, whose lives du Pont forever affected. The upside of this is that it delivers a fine and rousing drama, perfectly paced and boasting a cast finely tuned into Miller’s vision, a stark exploration of characters as barren as the wintery landscape they inhabit. A powerful and very dark drama, it’s a hint of unexplored potential for Carell.

In to the Woods There’s something fitting about Into The Woods being adapted from a stage musical by Stephen Sondheim; for - like the last Sondheim adaptation, Sweeney Todd - Into The Woods seems to have been strategically marketed to show it to be anything other than a musical. But it is. And not a great one. A crossover of classic fairytale characters, Into The Woods centres largely around James Corden’s Baker, who sets out on a quest to lift a curse that has kept him from fathering a child. Immediately surprising with his vocal talents, Corden is quite at home with goings on; with a supporting cast (particularly Kendrick) equally game. Marshall’s direction is fairly deft, and the musical numbers hit home suitably enough, however some staggering pacing issues and an incredibly misjudged third act ensure audiences will care very little about a happily ever after.

Best known for his work in comedy genre, Steve Carell returns to our screens this month with Foxcatcher; Bennett Miller’s retelling of offbeat philanthropist John du Pont’s ill-fated attempt to privatise the training of the US olympic wrestling team. Dark and intense, it’s a vast departure for the man who brought Brick Tamland to life. “I think of myself as an actor and not necessarily a comedic actor,” Carell tells me. “I put my faith in Bennett; I figured that if he thought that I was capable of doing it then I was.” Buried under a wealth of prosthetic make-up, Carell’s performance is a revelation; but channeling the selfproclaimed “Golden Eagle” was not without its drawbacks. “I feel like we all disappeared for a while and then a few months later we

emerged from this experience together and I don’t think it was so much a matter shaking it off,” he admits. “I don’t think it has left any of us; maybe it’s not something that I think about every hour but its very present because I feel it was immersive and we all took it very seriously.” Opening to huge plaudits in Cannes, Foxcatcher generated early Oscar buzz straight out of the gate - particularly for Carell. Ever the deadpan professional however, the upbeat comedy titan continues to take it all in stride. “[I feel] the same I did three months ago.” he laughs. “You can’t really put any stock in it! It’s nice that people are talking about the film in that way but you can’t really give it too much credence. I can’t.”

2014: the year in film

Van connor takes a look back at 2014 in film… and ultimately ahead to what he hopes will be a cracking year of cinema in 2015. Kicking off the year with the return of both the Paranormal Activity and Jack Ryan franchises; 2014 quickly became a year of contrast in film. With an Oscar ceremony that was split between the cutting edge (represented by Gravity) and the more traditional (predominantly 12 Years A Slave, to a lesser extent The Dallas Buyers Club); it was fitting that the Oscars landed alongside the release of The Lego Movie - a film which, as with July’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, would come to perfectly encapsulate the contemporary fourquadrant tentpole picture. As the summer movie season began with Captain America: The Winter Soldier (in March!), the notion of the more intelligent blockbuster quickly began to overtake the norm. Cap, Guardians and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes may have made less money than the likes of the godawful Transformers: Age Of Extinction (god bless the Chinese box office, eh; Paramount?); but critics and audiences alike lined up to drown them in praise. Sure, Transcendence and Interstellar may have let down the cause on a critical level; but nevertheless, 2014 was the year in which intelligent mainstream cinema began to assert itself as a force to be reckoned with. Even cheaper exploitation fare got a more thoughtful go around in 2014; with the likes of Cheap Thrills and The Guest each proving to be very engaging and well-crafted grindhouse fodder for a more intellectually savvy crowd. Factor in February’s satirically wonderful Mr. Peabody & Sherman, a midsummer stop-

off for the metacentric 22 Jump Street and a brilliant crescendo in warless war-movie The Imitation Game; and it was undeniably the year in which intellect trumped slapped-together popcorn fare once and for all. The big question quickly became whether or not this was the beginning of a new standard of mainstream cinema, or if it was merely a blip on the way to the biggest year in cinema history. With a year ahead of us in which so much on offer is of the franchise variety, common logic would dictate that it’s back to business as usual; however when you look at the literally dozens of franchises returning to the big screen, intellect may

be the only thing to help them stand out from the pack. We’ve all seen Jurassic Park sequels for example; but we’ve yet to see one that could explore the corrupt and capitalist exploitation of its inhabitants that Jurassic World can potentially offer come June. Outside of the raptors and Chris Pratt meanwhile, Marvel continue their (mostly) unchallenged domination of the comic book movie genre with The Avengers: Age Of Ultron in April; a sequel which promises to go “full Whedon” and has all the makings of the next Dark Knight as regards dark and intense superhero sequels. With Ant-Man closing out July and looking like anything but the calamity its troubled production threatened, things continue to look rosy for the House Of M. For the few members of the younger generation not into the comic book craze however, 2015 has it’s share of animated offerings to choose from. With Despicable Me’s Minions getting their own titular spin-off, a Shaun The Sheep movie, a 3D Spongebob Squarepants sequel, video game adventure Pixels, Hotel Transylvania 2 and Pixar’s Inside Out to choose from; the year looks equally bright for the childfriendly animated movie as well. It’s a year with something for every one. The birth of the “year-round blockbuster”; in which the biggest movies aren’t simply saved for the summer months, and Oscar fodder isn’t relegated to the days of grim weather. Like Dwayne Johnson, the avid moviegoer is going to be kept pretty busy in 2015; but luckily we’re here to cover it all for you.

Currently enjoying a run at Sheffield City Hall, we caught up with James Smith – who’s playing the lead role in this year’s Manor Operatic panto Peter Pan. Hi James. Congrats on landing the lead role of Peter Pan! now, the Manor Operatic pantomimes have become something of an institution in the city. And every year they seem to get better and better. Without giving away any surprises, what can we expect this year? They definitely are - and this year’s no exception. As always, we’re pushing the boundaries – so expect to see lots of flying, big colourful chorus numbers, and even a 10ft crocodile! Snappy. So, what’s your background? How did you become part of the Manor Operatic family? I started to do some theatre in sixth form - and at the same time joined MOS for Sleeping Beauty in 2010. From day one I was welcomed and took under the MOS wing. You’re playing the boy who never grew up. Any affinity with the character? (Laughs) Well, anyone who knows me would probably say I do like to mess around and act more like a kid than a 21 year old. What’s been your personal Manor Operatic highlights over the years? Catch Peter Pan at Sheffield City Hall until January 4. See www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk for more.

One of my personal highlights has to be playing the Beast in Beauty and the Beast it was a challenging part but a nice chance to be a bit nasty! Another favourite is Bill Snibson - who I played in the classic ‘Me and My Girl’. Again, it was a great part, and one I could really play around with. Any funny stories? Maybe things which didn’t quite go to plan? One blooper I will always remember is back in 2012/13 when Aladdin (Emma Holmes) forgot to bring on her magic lamp - and didn’t realise until she was supposed to hand it over from around her neck. Myself and Bob Spink, the panto dame, brought the audience in on the mishap straight away and it brought the house down Emma still hasn’t lived it down. Do you have any backstage rituals? I don’t have any rituals as such - but I always have a few Rowntrees Randoms on hand to cure the dry mouth. the audience always has a ton of fun… is it as much fun for you guys on stage? They do - and we aim to entertain each and every one of them whether they’re aged two or 102. When we’re all on stage as a society, the atmosphere’s electric. We leave any problems we might have at the

door, we forget what work we might have to do the next day, and we go out and give our Sheffield audiences the best theatre experience possible. How much work goes into each production? An immense amount of hard work goes into our productions - not just on stage but by people behind the scenes too. From lighting and scenery, to costume and sound effects, all these things take very careful planning - all to make our pantomime the best it can be. Finally, can you sum up the production in three words? Fantastic, Family, Fun!

Hi Danni, how did you first get involved with Splinters? I was 20 and looking for a society to join, I was brought along by a friend of mine who was in Splinters along with various other societies, but he had convinced me that Splinters was THE group to be in for a performer of my age - and he was right!

Splinters Theatre Group have formed a one off company – ‘Splinters25’ - made up of members past and present to celebrate 25 years of first rate productions. Staging the perfect Christmas alternative, RENT, at the Crucible Studio theatre this month, we caught up with cast member Danni Birks to find out more.

Congratulations on the 25th Anniversary of the Splinters theatre group, how are you celebrating such a milestone? We started with a concert, singing a selection of songs from all the past productions. We staged our annual production at the University Drama Studio which this year was ‘South Pacific’ - and now we’ve focused our time to putting on an additional production of the fabulous musical RENT at the Studio with a cast made up from some of Splinters’ leading ladies and men of previous years. We plan to finish celebrating the milestone in proper Splinters style with a big party! What’s been your personal highlights over the years? Other than being part of some amazing productions, from ‘42nd Street’ to ‘We Will Rock You’, I suppose I have to say meeting my now husband during my first Splinters show (Robin Prince of Sherwood) - so Splinters has a lot to answer for - including my 2 kids Kassia and Connor… two future Splinters members in the making! What attracted you to Rent as your production of choice this winter? Sheffield has been crying out for someone to stage it as a full production - having only previously being performed here as a concert - and Splinters had talked about it previously. When we started talking of ways to mark our 25th anniversary it all just clicked, and ‘Splinters25’ doing RENT at the Crucible went from being just a crazy idea to really happening in a very short time. Can you tell us about your character? I play Maureen and, put simply, she’s an attention demanding diva who loves the spotlight. She’s confident and always speaks her mind. She’s also in love with Joanne - having just dumped Mark! the production features some heavy themes of poverty, addiction, heartbreak and the burdens of HIV/ AIDS. Is it difficult to play characters

undergoing such emotional turmoil? It’s actually quite refreshing to be able to do a show in which you need to dig deep into your own emotions… although it’s exhausting. When we walk on stage, the actor and the character are one, so it’s a challenge to switch off when we leave the rehearsal room and resume reality. What can audiences expect music-wise from Rent? It’s powerful stuff. RENT has very little spoken dialogue – and the energy of the music drives the show though a 2 hour rollercoaster of emotional highs and lows. It’s all sung in a rock style, so there are some loud, belting songs that you wanna just get up and dance to - but with the contrast of some really nice ballads that break the heart. the narrative spans a year, beginning and ending on Christmas Eve - any

festive numbers in there? RENT is such a cleverly written piece, it contains many sections and fragments and reworkings of many Christmas songs throughout - but I don’t think we get an entire line, let alone an entire verse of any of them. You may catch a hint of ‘Good King Wenceslas’ or a line from ‘Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer’, for example. How can people get involved with Splinter’s productions in the future? Splinters’ usual productions are staged in the autumn, and rehearsals begin in May, so anyone interested should keep an eye on our website or join our Facebook group for regular updates. What else is on the horizon? Well, after the party in February our attention will turn to our next production in September - which will be ‘Fame - The Musical’.

RENT takes place January 10 at the Studio Theatre. For more information, visit www. splinterstheatre.co.uk.
