Horoscopes

With the city’s annual events going from strength to strength last year, 2016 looks set to be another rip-snorter of a year. Here’s just a taste of what we’ve got to look forward to. Sheffield’s status at ‘The Outdoor City’ is bolstered with the likes of Cliffhanger, Grand Prix cycling, the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon and the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival. Sheffield has also been selected as one of six cities to host the Sport Relief Flagship games. And when it comes to major sporting events, the Crucible will once more see thousands flock from around the globe for the World Snooker Championships. Musically, there’s the return of the award-winning Tramlines in July, but to warm you up for that the team are launching all-dayer event Outlines in February, with the likes of Roots Manuva and Gang Of Four on the bill. A few local favourites are back on the scene as Crookes and Hey Sholay make big plans for the year (see interviews with the bands on pages 78 and 90, respectively) and Wet Nuns make a return for one night only to play a gig in memory of band member Alexis Gotts at the O2 on March 5. And if all of that isn’t enough to excite you for the year ahead, don’t forget there’s also Sensoria, Art in the Gardens, Doc/Fest, Sheffield Design Week, Sheffield Food Festival, Made Festival and Off The Shelf literary festival. Phew!

CAPRICORN Dec 22 - Jan 19

‘You think I’m weird, don’t you?’ you say, as that guy you once slept with then Facebook stalked for six months afterwards finds you stood in his bedroom, a slightly demented look in your eye and wearing a t-shirt with his face on it. After a couple of seconds spent in awkward silence, you scream, ‘So this is what I get for making an effort!’ before turning to climb out of the window and scuttling back down the drainpipe. SAGITTARIUS Nov 22 - Dec 21 After Jeremy Corbyn visits you in a sex dream, you completely re-evaluate your right-leaning stance on social policy. AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18 Your written proposal to take on ISIS by building ‘a proper big robot that like, has guns for arms and can’t ever be killed by anything ever’ is placed in the ‘maybe’ pile by NATO leaders. PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20 You arrive into 2016 in the same fashion as you entered 2015 – covered in your own vom and spooning a traffic cone. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 19 To even up the levels of goodwill shown throughout

the festive season, you kick the first tramp you see on New Year’s Day. T TAURU S TAURUS April 20 May 20 After years of wondering if it would ever arrive, you finally receive a letter stamped with the official Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry seal – but it turns out it’s just HM Revenue pulling your pisser and you owe them shit-loads. GEMINI May 21 - June 20 ‘Social media is getting a bit silly now,’ you think to yourself as the phones start recording your #GetPissedOnChallenge

LET THE GREAT FOODINI CARESS YOU INTO THE ETHER. FONDLE OUR FUTURES, FOODINI - FONDLE OUR FUTURES! UHN. 10 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

CANCER June 21 - July 22 Just give it a wash, ok? LEO July 23 - Aug 22 Perhaps you should try unconscious coupling? It’s like splitting up, but for pretentious tossers. VIRGO Aug 23 - Sep 22 The pork pies and chocolate over Christmas finally take their toll as you sprout a third manboob. LIBRA Sep 23 - Oct 22 Your tendency to cry over spilt milk makes every day a struggle down at the dairy farm. SCORPIO Oct 23 – Nov 21 ‘New year, new me,’ you mutter to yourself, smacking on some lipstick and pulling up your fishnet stockings before heading to meet ‘the lads’ in Yates.

LOCAL HERO

Emmaus Needs You!

Homeless charity Emmaus Sheffield offers a practical solution to helping people out of homelessness. The charity helps to bring previously homeless men and women into the world of work with the aim of eventually making them self-supporting. One of the organisation’s most popular fundraising schemes has been a vintage store at Sipelia Works, which is now looking for more volunteers to help with its social enterprise. The shop has become increasingly popular with bargain hunters, and there is now a greater need for volunteers to help maintain services and allow the business to expand. “What we really need is people who want to work as shop assistants and also anybody who wants to help as a van driver, picking up bigger donations like white goods and items of furniture,” Emmaus Sheffield retail manager Charley Fedorenko told Exposed. To get involved or for further information visit www.emmaussheffield.org.uk or call 0114 272 0677.

“Once I start twerking it’s game over, pal. GAME OVER.” “Male nipples are pointless – and ugly.” “I wanted to say ‘D for Delta’ or something like that, but all I could think about was dick.” “Eyebrows grow back quickly, like pubes.” “Sometimes, I’ll watch Planet Earth and be like, ‘Shit, does that animal actually exist?’”

kevin wells

To fans eagerly awaiting the arrival of Public Enemy at Sheffield Arena last month, photographer Kevin Wells is considered a hero. We had a chat with the man of the hour to find out more. Kev stepped in and offered the band a lift in his Ford Focus after they missed their taxi during a signing at The Record Collector and a selfie of the bizarre event soon went viral.

fuss. So at first it was funny and I got a buzz out of it, but after a while it started getting a little too much, especially with the amount of people trying to get in touch.

How did the whole series of events come about? Public Enemy were due to do a signing at the Record Collector in Broomhill at 5pm. At first I didn’t think I could make it so I called in earlier in the day and asked my mate who works in the shop to get me a few things signed. As I was travelling into town later I decided to call in to pick my stuff up. The band eventually arrived at 5.45pm, so they were running a bit late. Apparently a taxi turned up to take them back to the Arena but didn’t wait because the band was still in the shop. So I volunteered my services after someone asked if anyone had a car to take them to the gig.

Being a music photographer you must have had a few close encounters with famous acts – would you say Public Enemy have been the biggest? They’re definitely up there with biggest acts I’ve encountered. The 6music celebration for the Leadmill’s 35th Birthday was a special day, especially being in the presence of Pulp when they unveiled the PRS Heritage plaque. I never really do big arena gigs so I’ve not really encountered many massive superstars – but Liam Gallagher once grabbed my lens on my camera during a Beady Eye gig at the O2 Academy. It was all in good humour though…

Were there any worries that you wouldn’t make it in time? Chuck D and Flavor Flav didn’t seem worried, but one of their entourage was on the phone all the time. Did you ever imagine your story would go viral? Never, it’s really shocked me to be honest. My close friends and family know I’m a very private person and like to go about thing causing little To see some of Kevin’s photography head to www.lifeisbetterstill.co.uk.

In need of a little love advice? Has the fizz gone out of your banger? Let the lord of love enter your soul... Dear SP, My partner said he was going to get me ‘something sexy’ to use for Christmas this year, but when the day finally came I unwrapped a full body spandex gimp suit, an array of leather whips plus a studded dog collar and leash. He looked quite nervous at how I’d react so naturally I smiled and said, ‘that’s lovely, darling,’ as not to cause any embarrassment. In reality, though, I’m more of a cuddles and kisses kind of gyal; the whole dominatrix thing just ain’t my bag. Does this mean we’re incompatible as a couple? What should I do? Claire, Dronfield

Striking A Pose

Local photographer James Shaw is raising money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital by snapping famous faces from Sheffield and auctioning the large signed and framed photos off at a charity event. Currently in the midst of this project, which he hopes to complete this year, an event date is yet to be announced as James is hoping to get as many high profile names as possible. James told Exposed: ‘It all depends on who is involved. Obviously the bigger names will fetch more money and I’m hoping to raise as much as possible for the children’s hospital.’ A cause that is close to his heart, the son of a close friend of James’s was diagnosed with Leukaemia and they were unsure if he would survive. ‘Thanks to the treatment, care and support of Sheffield Children’s Hospital, I’m thrilled to say he’s still with us. His story inspired me to raise funds for this amazing institution.’ Already on board are the likes of Paul Carrack, Sheffield Eagles players and Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott. James also told Exposed that names like Sheffield Utd’s Billy Sharp, artist Pete McKee, radio presenter/comedian Toby Foster and Jon McClure AKA The Rev are also set to be photographed – and he’s also hoping to get Jessica Ennis-Hill and Sean Bean involved too.

Hey Claire, I can imagine it’s a shock for you realising that whilst you’ve been snuggling up to your partner at night, he’s secretly been fantasising about you cuffing him to the bedpost and giving his backside a good thrashing. But just because he might get a kick out a brisk smack in the nads every now and again, it doesn’t make him any less of a man. More to the point, why are you so quick to discount it? Do you not think a man slave could come in handy sometimes? Play your cards right and you could mix your man’s sexual gratification with the accomplishment of a few pesky household chores. The key here is compromise: tell him that if you’re playing the ball-bashing mistress on Friday night, then he has to be big spoon in bed on Saturday. Sorted. Yours, SP

SAMUEL HOLBERRY Back in early 19th century Sheffield, the city had no local MP to represent its people in parliament and the majority of the local population were unable to vote anyway. The high taxes coming from Westminster heightened this sense of disenfranchisement until Samuel Holberry, an active supporter of the Chartist movement to gain political rights for the working classes, organised an armed militia to take over Sheffield Town Hall, taking out every policeman, soldier and watchman that stood

16 | For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

in their way. However, the plot was betrayed by James Allen, the landlord of the Station Inn, Rotherham, who had overheard their plans. In 1840, Holberry was convicted of conspiracy to riot and sedition and was sentenced to four years imprisonment at Northallerton House of Correction. He died only two years into his sentence after being transferred to York Castle and contracting tuberculosis, but Holberry and the cause he stood for lived on with 50,000 people said to have been a part of his funeral procession.

CRAFT & DOUGH

PHOTOGRAPHS BY PAUL COCKER

A timeless combination, it’s no wonder that the latest venture from the Milestone Group has been a huge success, serving up the finest stone baked pizzas and some of the most exciting craft beer brands around. In fact, Sheffield has become so enamoured with the whole setup that within one year of opening they decided to take over a unit on Ecclesall Road too. THE MENU: As well as a range of pizzas with tasty toppings like pulled pork shoulder, smoked bacon and frazzles (AKA Piggie Smalls) or smoked salmon, ricotta, pickled lemon, capers and sorrel, you’ll also find the Craft & Dough ploughman’s (the perfect beer accompaniment), tempting courgette fries and a range of gluttonous desserts. Sourcing locally and adapting to what the season offers

means you know what’s atop your pizza is the freshest and finest. Plus, they also now offer a superb brunch menu –think stacked buttermilk pancakes with crispy bacon and maple syrup or eggs Benedict/Florentine/Royale. Suitable for everyone, the venues also offer gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. AND TO WASH IT ALL DOWN WITH? While the food menu is short and sweet, the same can’t be said of the vast array of drinks. You’ll find hundreds of craft beers, as well as ciders, wine and nonalcoholic options. Not to mention their in-house cocktail creations… DID YOU KNOW? They feature in a brand new cook book, ‘Blood, Sweat & Beers’ alongside The Milestone and The Wig & Pen. Try your hand at cooking one of their pizzas yourself, and if it all goes wrong… you know where they are!

HANDS UP FOR A CAREER MOVE

Hands up if you’re looking for a career move in 2016?! If so, our advice to you is be ahead of the game - take note of our five top tips and you will be in a prime position to make that move. 1. PERFECT TIMING The good news is the New Year is perfect timing to be on the hunt for a new role. Businesses are fully focused on the year ahead, maximising their team’s potential to ensure a successful business year, and in turn grow their team. So, the fact you’re already thinking about a move will stand you in good stead.

2. GET NOTICED Get yourself noticed for all the right reasons and ensure your CV is up to date. A CV will be the first request from a potential employer or recruiter so make sure it’s current and features relevant experience to the role you are applying for.

3. ‘IN’ THE KNOW Alongside your CV, employers are increasingly referring to Linkedin, essentially Linkedin is like your virtual CV and a chance for you to share more about your expertise, from examples of work to endorsements from your contacts. Be sure your career history is comprehensive and your professionalism comes across, as if it’s that good you may even be headhunted before you even have the chance to hit the job boards!

4. DON’T GO IT ALONE Often people don’t realise the value of having a recruiter on their side – in a crowded market recruiters will make sure your CV is put in front of the right people. At Benchmark we work to proactively showcase your skill set to companies you would like to work for and ensure you are notified of the best of the roles in the region as soon as they go live.

5. DREAM BIG Working with us at Benchmark allows you to dream big, as with a strong business network across Yorkshire we have access to companies you previously thought were untouchable. We can open doors for you, and ensure you fulfil your career ambitions. So, it’s a great time to be looking to make a career move, and if you want to know more about the roles we already have on our books visit www.benchmarkrecruit.co.uk to see our latest jobs.

Beginning life as a band by busking on the streets of Scarborough, Buffalo Skinners have since embarked on a journey which has seen them take their brand of soulful folk and skiffle – later termed ‘zydefolk and roll’ – from the attention of passing crowds in northern coastal towns to Hollywood nightspots with audiences containing the likes of Rod Stewart, no less (more on that later). Now based in Sheffield’s fair city, the five-piece have been spending time down at Yellow Arch Studios with local producer Colin Elliott, the Words: right-hand man on Richard Hawley’s solo albums, working on what will Joseph Food be their third album release so far. We spoke to the band – James (violin), Robbie (bass), Peter (guitar), Photography: Kieran (piano) and Miles (drums) – before they stepped in front of the Marc Barker cameras to hail in a brand new year of Exposed In Session. So, it all began from busking sessions around Scarborough? James: Yeah, we all went to university there. Three of the guys who originally formed the band – Robbie, Pete and myself – After busking in cities up and down the UK, you must have are still in it. Since Scarborough, we moved to York and now a few highlights or stories to tell? we’ve ended in Sheffield, so we slowly seem to be making our Pete: We met Johnson from Peep Show. That was massive. He actually ended up buying a CD from us. way down the country. Robbie: We were all listening to the same music at the same James: We’ve had so many great moments and experiences time and kind of discovering it together. What we listened to from doing our busking – I wouldn’t know where to start. was all acoustic stuff, or at least could be played acoustically, I guess that’s the beauty of busking performances: when so it wasn’t a huge step from playing a few of those songs you’re playing on street corners to complete strangers, anything could really happen. together then having a go at busking. And what was the music you were discovering together at Robbie: Yeah, for sure, it’s a great way to engage with people. You come across a load of different characters each time. We the time? Robbie: The likes of Bob Dylan and Blues Brothers, that sort still do a bit every now and again. And your music has since taken you all the way over to the of thing. James: Simon & Garfunkel too. But yeah, we all seemed to US, where you recorded the second album. How was that? discover it at the same time and eventually decided to give Some contrast to Scarborough, I’d imagine. James: Going there was great, and we got the opportunity to things a shot ourselves. play at some really nice venues in LA like The Hotel Café and The Satellite. We recorded the second album in California and basically gorged on burgers for 30 days. Pete: The venues were great; we played in a bar called The Spare Room in Hollywood, and Rod Stewart came in with an entourage of supermodels. Madness.

No way?! Did you get the chance to chat to him? Pete: Yeah, he asked us how we started and I told him how we all met at university in Scarborough. He just looked at me and said, ‘Scarborough? What did you go there for?’ Which I guess is a fair comment when you’re living in Hollywood. James: We were later moved away by a huge bouncer who told us Rod had enough of talking. And that was that. You’re all based in sunny Sheffield now, and have been recording your third album at Yellow Arch Studios. How’s that been going? Robbie: Yeah, four of us live in a house together on Bramall Lane. Me and Pete actually share a room – it’s all very rock and roll. Pete: Living the dream. We’ve got a thin curtain dividing our beds and a strict ‘no masturbation’ policy at night. We’re quite strict about that. James: But anyway, the album recording has been going well. We’re just applying the finishing touches now, so it should all be wrapped up in a couple of days. And you’re working with Colin Elliott, who worked closely with Hawley, but also the likes of Jarvis Cocker and Paul Weller. How did that connection happen? Pete: Basically just by rehearsing here all of the time and getting pally with everyone. We booked in to record and originally they were going to put us with someone else, but some time came free for Colin and he took us on. It was a bit lucky for us really. Robbie: Yeah, lots of things happened – originally we hadn’t even planned on recording in Sheffield – but it all fell into place nicely in the end.

Richard Hawley is really into his rock ‘n’ roll… maybe you could see if your producer could wangle a nice collaboration for the album? Pete: That would be nice. We’ve actually bumped into him here before. Kieran: Yeah, Robbie asks about him all of the time. Robbie: I love him, so it’s been awesome to work with Colin. I was even pestering him to give him a Christmas card from me. A collaboration with Richard would be incredible though. How does this album differ to your previous record, The Other Nine-to-Five? James: A bit rockier, I’d say. There are definitely more up-tempo tracks on it. Plus we’re a lot better at our instruments these days, which obviously helps a lot. Pete: And the production is going to miles better. I think this is the one which the most effort and time has gone into. What else is on the agenda for the band in 2016? James: The album is scheduled to be out around April/May time, so hopefully we’ll have a big old tour to coincide with that. Robbie: Our next Sheffield gig is here [Yellow Arch Studios], on February 27th, and it will be great to get a big crowd down. It’s a really underrated live venue in Sheffield here so it would be good to see it packed. James: Is that the final question? I feel like we’ve been a bit boring. Maybe throw in another Rod Stewart anecdote? James: Yeah, well let me tell you something about Rod: he’s, erm, really good at giving foot massages. And, yeah, he’s just a great laugh to be around. We’ve had some great times. Much better.

One of the biggest indie bands of the noughties have re-emerged from a two year hiatus with a new single, new sound and two new band members. This month, Bloc Party release Hymns, their fifth studio album, after teasing fans with springy new track ‘The Love Within’, boasting plenty of synth and – to the chagrin of some radio listeners – a whole ton of ‘Wub, Wub, Wubs’. Exposed spoke with guitarist Russell Lisack about the band’s new direction and how it feels to be back on the scene. Hi Russell, welcome back from the two year break. What have you been up to in your time away from Bloc Party? Erm, basically a lot of musical stuff and my son was born shortly after we finished touring so I’ve had a lot of daddy time to enjoy. I toured with a band called Mew from Denmark and went out to Copenhagen with them to write and play on some songs for their record, which came out earlier this year. I also did some work with Weezer and Ash, plus working on solo records and gigs. I’ve been well occupied!

COVER STORY

I’ve heard Ash can be a pretty rowdy band to tour with. Is that still the case? Yeah, I can’t imagine what they were like when they were teenagers! They can certainly stay up a lot later then I can! So we have Hymns, your first album in four years, coming out at the end of this month. Can you talk a bit about the new direction the band is taking? I guess it’s quite an eclectic album – much like all of our records to some degree. We have released two of the tracks so far, intentionally choosing two that are both very diverse and on completely different sections of the music spectrum. I’m not actually the best at describing music, but there’s certainly a broad range of styles on the album. And you’ve also welcomed two new members to the band: Justin Harris on bass and Louise Bartle on drums. How’s the new dynamic working out? Yeah, we went on a little tour in Japan and Europe for a couple of weeks and we’ve just got back this weekend. Everyone’s just getting on really well, you know? It’s all been really fun; we’re all kind of hanging out together and having good times. It all reminds me of why we started doing this ‘band thing’ in the first place. Everyone’s quite nervous, excited and optimistic – but it’s a really good atmosphere overall! One of the reasons for your hiatus was that touring was taking time away from family. Have you managed to rediscover that balance now? Erm, yeah, because it’s not too crazy at the moment. We were away for two weeks but now we’ve come back for a couple of weeks. At the moment it’s kind of like that: away for a couple of weeks, back for a week. It’s not as a crazy as in the past when we would put a record out, then tour for six weeks and only come home for two days, then go away for another four weeks,

etc. I think that’s when it started to have a detrimental effect on everyone’s sanity. We have been doing this for a few years and everyone is aware of that. When a band’s doing well you can’t really avoid it, but you have to experience to discover what balance works for you later on. On a more technical note, you are still working magic with your almost signature telecaster synth combo. Can you tell us more about your current setup? I’ve had a new Teleflex pedal board built for touring this record. I did a lot of stuff in the studio which was all guitar-based, but there are a lot of crazy sounds with complicated effects and combinations involved, so I had to go and get a new board specially built to be able to play a lot of the songs live. It’s quite a gigantic thing to lug around but it’s certainly doing the trick so far. There are plenty of fun new sounds to be made with it, which will become more obvious on the album. With the new sound you’ve created for Hymns, what’s the atmosphere like at a Bloc Party live show now? The atmosphere at shows has been great so far. We hadn’t played for a few years and we have new members, so we had no idea what to expect. We did our first show with the new line-up a couple of months ago in California; everyone was a little nervous about it but it couldn’t have gone any better. Everyone seemed really excited to see us and they took to Justin and Louise straight away, which was great. I can’t wait for more people to see us play with them live. They’re such great musicians with great personalities as well. Their enthusiasm is contagious! Some of our old stuff is quite complicated and energetic,

36 l For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk

but these guys are more than capable of playing them brilliantly and seeing the audience react well to the change is great. If you had to pick a track from the album which stands out for you personally, what would it be? I think at the moment I’d pick the last track on the record, ‘Living Lux’. It started out as a very different song to how it ultimately turned out, and I am glad it did because I always thought there was something really good there but we kept abandoning it and coming back to it. We persevered and saw it through to the end because it all pretty much came together by accident. Something happened when I was looping some sounds on the guitar and they went out of time as we were still recording. It sounded quite odd but listening back to it we thought, ‘You know what? This is really cool!’ I think it’s the one track that will be trickiest to play live but we will certainly give it a go. With an album called Hymns, can we expect any religious connotations or themes? No, not really. It is a spiritual record, especially lyrically. I think Kele (lead vocalist) has spoken about having a very religious upbringing, which is something he doesn’t follow any more, but your experiences during youth can be a huge influence when you put your mind to things going forwards. I also think, at this point in his life, it’s something he can look back on in a different way and take influence from. We at Exposed are based in Sheffield. In your years as a band, do you have any standout memories of the Steel City? Yeah! It’s probably a long time ago but I recall playing at The Leadmill and the Arctic Monkeys were crowd surfing at our gig! I certainly remember that. Words: .Acko. Hymns is released on January 29th, but is available to pre-order online and in stores now.

Ah, January… a month of tough decisions. The festive holidays have passed and it turns out – apparently – that this means it’s no longer socially acceptable to polish off a selection box before breakfast or swig a bottle of port until gout sets in. Next it’s your hectic social schedule that takes a hit and family members start to look at you questioningly each time you reach into the fridge for that beer/pork pie/yule log while nonchalantly proclaiming, ‘Oh well, it’s Christmas!’ It’s not. It’s January. And you’re left with a right ol’ dilemma on your hands: is it time to fix up and look sharp? Or do you carry on regardless? Whether you choose to go down the righteous path of fitness, wellbeing and vitality, or opt to keep the party going with another naughty month of self-indulgence, we’ve got both sides covered with our Saint or Sinner guide to New Year in Sheffield! So, dear reader, what will it be? Don’t worry, we won’t judge…

MOMENTUM

What is it? Momentum Leisure Club on St Georges Close (opal 2) offers up a wide variety of facilities for exercise, relaxation and recovery. ROLL WITH IT

What is it? Roller Derby is a fast-paced, full contact team sport played on roller-skates. The aim of the game is to get one of your players – the jammer – to lap as many opposition players as possible. The only problem is that the opposition are trying to do the same thing whilst being able to block your jammer, so in effect both teams play offense and defence simultaneously. Got it? What are the benefits? It’s a fun sport that gives a full aerobic workout, just be prepared to pick up some bumps and bruises on the way. Both Sheffield teams pride themselves on inclusivity so people of any ability are encouraged to give it a go. How much? The first session with the Inhuman League is free while Sheffield Steel Rollergirls regularly have new intake sessions, also free. Find out more: www.sheffieldsteelrollergirls.com, recruitment@sheffieldsteelrollergirls.co.uk

TOUGH ENOUGH?

What is it? The team-oriented assault course phenomenon is coming to Yorkshire. The 12km courses are designed to push groups to their absolute limits with the race taking place on difficult terrain and using obstacles inspired by military courses – basically think ninja warrior in a swamp. What are the benefits? Tough Mudder prides itself on being one of the most challenging assault courses you can do; it will test your physical strength, mental grit and camaraderie, but with such a challenge comes a huge sense of accomplishment. Many people opt to raise some money for charity and complete the course for a good cause. How much? Currently priced at £79 for Saturday August 6th and £69 for Sunday August 7th. Upper body strength and core muscles will get a really good workout and you’ll use more complex moves than on a traditional climbing wall when tackling the higher graded routes. Bouldering is also a sport that will test your grey matter as problem-solving is important when working out the best route to take. How much? There’s a compulsory induction session for new climbers which costs £20 but for the price you’ll get shown the ropes by a qualified instructor. Registration for competent climbers is £3. Find out more: www.climbingworks.com Climbing Works is in Centenary works on Little London Road, S8 0UJ. Tel 0114 250 9990

1) Control your cravings and satisfy your hunger with nutritious, low-calorie foods such as fruit, steamed vegetables, lean protein and wholegrain breads. Or just drink some water, a lot of the time people misinterpret thirst for hunger. 2) Plan a workout routine, regular exercise promotes increased energy levels and your body will begin to adapt to the point where your fitness goal won’t be so far-fetched. Stick to it long enough and you’ll reap the benefits. 3) This is one you will like – get enough sleep! Not getting enough sleep has been linked to heart attacks, high blood pressure and other serious health problems. Adults should get 8 to 8.5 hours of sleep each night for optimum health.

‘The customer is always right’ goes the saying, so this month we cornered a few happy clients to find out why it is they choose Good Vibrations, and what work they’ve had done over the years… Mick Kent

My experience at Good Vibrations was fantastic. I was over the moon with the results. I’ve been a couple of times since, but my most recent tattoo came about through a shout out on their Facebook page asking if there was anyone wanting a tattoo done at Maida Vale Bar during Tramlines Festival. This was done live over twelve hours by Marc Warren. I’d been mulling over having another tattoo and he came up with the idea of having the studio logo done on my back with a few tweaks to it to make it an original piece of art. The majority of the piece was done on the night and is soon to be completed in the New Year. The staff at the studio are a very welcoming set of people and always have a chat and a drink with you, it always feels as if you’ve known them for years. This is the norm with all the staff that I have encountered; they are all a great bunch of people. They even get customers baking buns and cakes for the staff to have! I don’t think for one minute I would feel this way if I had gone somewhere else. I’d like to say big thank you and keep up the fantastic work, not only in the studio but in the local community for the funds they help to raise for The Bluebell Wood charity.

Cherie Wilbraham

I went to Good Vibrations after hearing great things about them from my friends. They’ve got a great reputation in Yorkshire and beyond. I’ve had loads done over the years! My current project is a full sleeve, done by Naked Pete, which is a Viking theme. It’s going to be amazing once it’s finished. What makes the place special is the welcome and the vibe; they’re lovely people and I count them as friends.

Jammie Morris

I chose to use Good Vibrations as a few of my friends have used them before and only had good things to say. The tattoo artist I use is Jack Yeardley, who is a specialist in traditional tattoos. I like his old-school style and he’s done me a few different tattoos along with a few free-hand drawn pieces. My main tattoo he’s done, from design to skin, is my full back tattoo and it’s my biggest and best to date. I find the atmosphere relaxing, there’s no pressure to get anything if you don’t want and they are great fun to be around – even when in pain. They’ll make you a cuppa while you wait, making you feel right at home. They are a welcoming bunch of lads ‘n’ lasses – what’s not to love? The bit I like most about going there is they give back to charity, so it’s like we all get something; I get a nice tattoo, they get paid and the charity also gets a good bit of money, so it’s a win for everyone.

Steve Hughes

From the minute you walk in the door of either studio, you are made to feel welcome. I felt at ease right away. It wasn’t until I’d had a chance to talk to the artists and see their work ‘on the flesh’, as it were, that I decided that my future tattoos would have to be done at Good Vibrations. Each of the artists listen to your requests and offer sound and practical advice on all aspects of their trade, from the initial design and placement to aftercare. Another factor which drew me in as a customer was that there were no standard flash sheets hanging around the shop; all artwork was drawn or composed exclusively by the artists to suit the client. I knew then that this wasn’t your average shop and each artist had passion and flair for creating stunning artwork. To me, Good Vibrations is like a home away from home. I have on a few occasions stuck around after being tattooed simply because it’s a great place to spend time. The work ethic is amazing and customers are treated with respect. Pint o’ the Black Stuff

The old home of Sheffield’s famous sauce on Leavygreave Road is set to be given a new lease of life as a university pub. The Henderson’s Relish factory has been a recognisable landmark of Sheffield University campus and the city since the 19th century and was the centre of the product’s production until 2013 when the company relocated to a new site in Parkway Business Park. The University of Sheffield purchased the former factory in the summer from the Church Burgess Trust and has now released plans to turn the building into a pub. The plan is to pay tribute to the local delicacy by keeping the iconic signage up and to display some of the company’s history inside. Local architects have been invited to submit designs which retain the original building at its core. The new pub will form part of the university’s new city centre campus. It is likely to be open to the public next year. See www.sheffield.ac.uk for more.

The Incredible Spice Man Regular guest chef on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and co-host of television series The Incredible Spice Men, Cyrus Todiwala will be heading over to Inox Dine in February to collaborate with Master Chef Joe Berry, for an evening of Goan and Portuguese cuisine. Following a range of appetisers, the main course centres around baby potato curry and special Goan style rice, decorated with diced lamb and grated coconut. The meal is finished off with a mouthwatering almond pistachio and semolina cake, complemented with cinnamon custard and vanilla ice cream. The whole evening not only includes this unique set menu, but interesting and entertaining stories about the history of Goan and Portuguese cuisine. The evening falls on February 26th beginning at 7pm, with dinner served at 7.30pm. Tickets are £38 per person. For more information and to book tickets, head over to inoxdine.co.uk.

A Fair Share Café Cereza, a UK coffee brand based in Sheffield, have decided to donate a share of their profit with one of its El Salvadorian producers. The company source all their beans from the Monte Sion estate in El Salvador, an area which has its own community foundation Fundacion Monte Sion Nuevo Amanecer, which provides support for workers and their families for everything from healthcare to food and clothing. The organisation’s work has resulted in a dramatic reduction of infant malnutrition in the area and has seen Dr Luis Urrutia, who runs the foundation with his daughter Lilliana de Narvaez, recognised by the UN for combating poverty in El Salvador. Bryan Unkles, Café Cereza’s founder, has visited Monte Sion twice since the company’s beginning five years ago, and has stated how important their quarterly donations are to those supplying them with the coffee: “Supporting producers has always been a fundamental part of Cafe Cereza as we believe in sustainability – and that means helping to provide a sustainable future for the people who farm our coffee.”

The Summer House

289 Abbeydale Rd S, Sheffield S17 3LB Tel: 0114 236 1679 www.thesummerhousesheffield.com THE PLACE

Before even entering The Summer House we saw a staff member come out to gather some ingredients from their own miniature herb garden, so I knew already we were in for a treat. After being greeted warmly, we were taken to our table and given the chance to peruse over the delectably impressive menu. Cocktails were definitely in order for this occasion; two huge glasses of elderflower frosts graced our table which were refreshing, crisp and dangerously drinkable.

THE FOOD

I opted for the baked thermador crab pot as a starter which was served with salad and crusty bread to spread the pate-esque creation on; it was flakey and wonderfully potent. Whilst waiting for our next course to arrive, we admired the décor of the venue; which I would describe as botanical chic. The room was filled with luscious plants, exposed wooden beams and brassy tones. It’s minimalistic, elegant, tasteful and homely – all at the same time! My crispy monkfish arrived along with my friend’s pan roasted wild seabass and both were immaculately presented –

time to tuck in! The monkfish was cooked perfectly with a soft and sumptuous centre and the batter surrounding it was notably light and crispy. It was served with thick hand cut chips, seasonal salad, lemon crème fraiche and chilli jam, which was flavoursome and complemented the fish well. The seabass was also cooked very well, the vegetables were tender and it was perfectly seasoned. The cake cabinet provided dessert inspiration and we were completely spoilt for choice. I was swayed by the lovely looking coconut cake, whose textures of desiccated coconut, coconut cream and jam worked stunningly. It was served with raspberries and just the right amount of fresh cream which soaked into the sponge – a real tropical treat. As a digestif, my friend went for a simple yet delicious espresso martini which wasn’t bitter or overly sweet and had a healthy amount of froth on top.

THE VERDICT

By the end of the meal, it was clear that what the menu may lack in quantity, they clearly make up for in quality. The Summer House is certainly worth a meander out of the city down to the south side of Abbeydale Road.

Fear X Loathing

101 West St, Sheffield S1 4EQ Tel: 07900 933732 www.fxlsheffield.com THE PLACE

A newbie on West Street, Fear X Loathing keeps things simple. Still in the early stages, the burger bar is testing the waters with a list of just four burgers on the menu at the moment, plus a daily special or two. The décor is also understated, going for a modern ‘industrial chic’ kind of style, though still inviting enough as we take our seats at a table by the window.

THE FOOD

Taking the opportunity one Friday afternoon to nip out of the office and try the place for ourselves, the four of us decided to go for one of each of the burgers on the menu. The cheese burger involved an aged beef patty, cooked pink to perfection with minced onion, lettuce, pickle and ‘juicy sauce’, smothered in melted cheese served on a brioche bun. The second burger went one further with the addition of crispy smoked bacon. A slightly lighter option, the juicy chicken patty burger came with cheese, spinach, tomato, herb crème fraiche and delicious chilli jam. Veggies won’t be disappointed either with the Portobello mushroom burger served with halloumi, spinach, tomato herb crème fraiche, chilli jam and hummus – undoubtedly one of the tastiest vegetarian options going and certainly not an afterthought to the menu. Each burger is attributed with a prefix of ‘juicy’ on the menu, and this is probably the most apt word to describe the food at Fear X Loathing; the flavours from the sauce and accompaniments are outstanding, without detracting from the burgers themselves, which obviously remain the stars of the show. There was also the option of the mighty Fear X Loathing Christmas burger, which combined chicken, seasoned sausage, smoked bacon, cheese, stuffing, lettuce, mayo, cranberry, port chutney and a pig in blanket to top it all off. As tempting as this sounded, no one was brave enough to take it on when an afternoon of work beckoned. The only activity you’ll be doing after taking on this monster is a nap.

THE VERDICT

A capsule menu is no bad thing. By limiting it while starting out, Fear X Loathing are able to perfect each dish and offer up succulent mouth-watering burgers every time. OPENING HOURS: TUESDAY-THURSDAY 12PM-12AM, FRIDAY 12PM-1AM, SATURDAY 12PM-2AM

A Brewing Success Cementing Sheffield’s reputation as the beer capital of the UK, another local brewery has recently opened its doors, launching two beers before Christmas with a third promised for the New Year. Casks of The Brew Foundation’s hoppy American pale ale First Light were supplied to a range of pubs, bars and restaurants across the city and sold out within a matter of hours at some venues over the festive season. Founder James Eardley told Exposed: ‘Like many people, I’d often had the drunken conversation with friends and family about how great it would be to make our own beer. Well, I finally decided to take the plunge and do it. For me, flavour balance is key to decent beer. At the Brew Foundation our goal is to ensure that each beer we make leaves people wanting another pint of it. If our beer does that, then it’s all good.’ Sound like your kind of tipple? Here’s where you can find The Brew Foundation beers [correct at time of print].

Pubs and restaurants: Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern, Gardeners Rest, Shakespeare’s, The Beer Engine, The Students’ Union, Milestone, Craft and Dough, Wig and Pen, The Old Crown, The Brothers Arms, The Broadfield, The University Arms, The Anchorage, New Barrack Tavern, Trippets Lounge Bar, Yorkshireman Rock Bar, The Hallamshire House, The Bath Hotel, and Tap and Tankard. BOTTLE SHOPS: Beer Central, Turner’s Bottle Shop, Beeches of Walkley, Starmore Boss, The Roco, The Dram Shop and The Beer Stop (Dronfield).

Taking place at iceSheffield from March 16-19, SIBA BeerX showcases the best of British brewing as it celebrates its fourth birthday. On top of SIBA BeerX’s regular 30 metre bar, this year they will also host 20 individual brewery bars, with each brewery serving two different keg beers. Nick Stafford, SIBA’s operations director, told Exposed: ‘We have visions for the growth of BeerX in years to come and our ‘craft keg village’ signals the beginning of this development.’ ‘We are also looking at the possibility of adding an international flavour to this element of the festival, which will offer something new and unique for festival-goers and give us the opportunity to showcase some of the best global breweries alongside fantastic award-winning British beers.’ As well as plenty of opportunity for the public to sample the huge amount of beers on offer, the event will also combine SIBA’s AGM, a trade exhibition, seminars, keynote speakers and business awards for SIBA members throughout the week. And as per usual there will be plenty of entertainment from the likes of former Inspiral Carpets lead singer Tom Hingley, soul/Motown aficionados Vernon Lewis & E-Maculate and Sheffield super group The Bootleggers. Tickets are £10 on the door with discounts available for students, armed forces and CAMRA members. See beerx.org for information and new announcements. Mock the Week star Ed Byrne is an established touring favourite, and despite his youthful looks the Irishman recently marked up 20 years as a comic. His latest show of observational comedy, ‘Outside, Looking In’, covers a wide range of subjects – from a recent gastric illness to the success of UKIP – but he also talks a lot about his family and it’s his most personal yet. ‘I didn’t make a conscious effort to write a more personal show, but that was what was coming out when I started writing it,’ Ed says. ‘People come to see me for a laugh and I would like to think they go away thinking the show is quite heart-warming. A lot of comics may talk about the same stuff, but what makes it mine is that what I’m saying is what I genuinely think on this subject, and I try to make it as funny as I can. I think we all mine our lives to some degree or other.’ Ed is adamant that he will keep his two young sons out of the celebrity spotlight, so don’t expect an ‘At Home With Ed Byrne and Family’ in OK! any time soon. But in Outside, Looking In, he shows a picture of one of his sons – the denouement of a bittersweet story about buying new shoes – which not only illustrates it perfectly, but produces an ‘Aaaah’ moment. ‘I talk about them in pretty abstract terms, because what I’m discussing is the act of parenting, and you can’t talk about that without mentioning your own children. And there isn’t anything in this show that would make them at a later date say, “I don’t like this.”’ But while there is a lot of personal reflection in his new show, Ed also ponders on matters political – the story about his son sparks a passionate section about how we label young children, for instance, and he also talks about feminism and transgenderism. I ask Ed if dipping a toe into the transgender debate (for which some have been vilified on social media) isn’t a little risky. ‘It has become such a big subject because of Caitlyn Jenner [the former athlete Bruce Jenner, who transitioned earlier this year] and some Twitter trolls were refusing to acknowledge her as anything but Bruce. I thought it was interesting that it stills divides people. I call it the thorniest issue since Jesus was fitted for a hat.’ The feminist slant to the new show was sparked by Ed’s reflections on his early days in comedy and, strikingly, he admits to being a little uncomfortable about some of his more laddish material back then. ‘My comedy reflected my life at that time – single and enjoying myself – and most of it was fairly harmless “the difference between men and women” kind of thing. But some of the stuff about an ex-girlfriend I can see was a bit angry and I wouldn’t do it now.’ I ask Ed, 43, if he still likes touring after two decades. ‘Apart from the travel involved, which no comic likes, I love it, because you have people responding to something that you have written alone in your office, and the work comes alive in a room of people. I like the television things I do, but nothing can beat a live comedy audience.’ Ed Byrne brings his live show to Sheffield City Hall on February 6. Tickets from www. sheffieldcityhall.co.u.k

Three things you should probably know about Eliza and The Bear: there are no Elizas in the band, nor bears, and perhaps most importantly, their penchant for glorious, fast-paced indie pop has landed them a deal with Capitol Records, and a highly-anticipated album release is pencilled in for April 1st. Before that, the London 5-piece are embarking on a 26-date tour of the Which brings us nicely onto your debut album. Why did you UK, which will be stopping off at The Leadmill in February. A striking red sky hangs overhead as we meet The Crookes outside Sheffield’s O2 Academy, casting a pinkish hue over the city centre and temporarily adding a splash of colourful relief to what was an unforgivably grey winter’s day. A welcome change. And change in itself is something which has been an overriding theme throughout 2015 for the indie pop four-piece. They’ve welcomed a new drummer, Adam Crofts, into the fold and launched their independent record label back in April, which has seen them taking full autonomy over the upcoming album, Lucky Ones, scheduled for release on January 29th. ‘It’s been quite a topsy-turvy year, I suppose,’ reflects lead singer George Waite. ‘In a way, we’ve been quite lucky in how it’s all turned out.’ A quick elaboration tells how things have gone from one extreme to the other for the band in a relatively short space of time. Today we sit to discuss a fourth album and imminent UK tour; yet twelve months ago the band were without a drummer and left seriously considering their future together. Thankfully though, ‘Croftsy’ came on-board, passing the band initiation process (buying a round of beers) with flying colours and shifting the focus back onto new music. September provided the first glimpse of the forthcoming album through the release of single ‘I Wanna Waste My Time On You’ featuring a B-side track with South London songstress Misty Miller, the first release through Anywhere Records. The decision to start up a label was instigated by a desire to take fate into their own hands, but also reflects a shifting landscape when it comes to the clout offered by large labels in the music industry. ‘Quite a few of the bands that we’re friends with – Little Comets and Frankie & The Heartstrings, for example – have their own label, so why not give it a go? It also seems what record labels used to do five or ten years ago, bands can do themselves now anyway,’ says George. ‘To put it a bit more simply: I don’t think there’s anybody in the current music industry who will care about this upcoming record more than ourselves, so to take the responsibility for it makes a lot of sense.’ Lucky Ones will mark their fourth studio album in less than five years for the group who met on a sticky nightclub floor in Sheffield University’s Student Union, a telling stat which backs up their ever-present zest for writing and sharing music. Guitarist Dan Hopewell, the man behind the lyrics lauded repeatedly with each new release, puts this down to the band’s strong work ethic – ‘grafters’, as he says – but also the pressing need to constantly write and transform experiences into songs. ‘We all tend to write our stuff separately and that a continuing decline of ‘old-fashioned romance’ come back together, but it’s a continuous could lead to a deficit in inspiration for good love process. As musicians, it’s just what you songs? ‘Well, I’ve always been an old romantic, do. It is clear, however, that even with a experiences completely undiscovered. In a world break in sight the band are in no rush to stop gigging just yet – of dating apps, booty-calls and Netflix and chills, tour fever has gripped them all. Guitarist Tom Dakin calls it the does he believe there is any hope of true romance ‘post-tour comedown’ and you get the impression that the band for the Tinder generation? ‘I’m not sure,’ he admits. would happily skip forwards to January 30th, the opening date ‘I guess it’s always easy to define romance in of their tour with the new record. Is there also a sense of worry what 2016 might hold. One thing’s for sure: the tour’s closing gig at the Leadmill is set to be a special evening in the city where it all began, on a stage where the lead singer used to dream of playing. Lucky Ones is released in the UK on Jan 29th. The ‘We were asked the other night what our dream venue would be band play The Leadmill on February 27th – see www. and I couldn’t answer it. Cage The Elephant Tell Me I’m Pretty

You know what you’re getting with Cage The Elephant: a fun cacophony of noise, displays of riff-based rebellion and a perpetual two fingers to all manner of ‘people talkin’ shit’. Well, perhaps not quite. On Tell Me I’m Pretty, their fourth album, while still retaining an endearing level of brashness, the reins are pulled in tightly on boisterous front man Matthew Shultz and rough edges smoothed out by producer Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys). Unsurprisingly, the influence of The Keys is evident, and at times dominant, throughout as tight-sounding, neo-blues tracks flow into each other brilliantly – but the similarity at times can leave one questioning if this tried and tested formula promoted by Auberbach (Turn Blue, El Camino) has seen the band hand over too much power to him, and whether it leaves them with much to honestly call their own. There are highlights: ‘That’s Right’ is a sun-drenched ‘60s rock and roll track; ‘Sweetie Little Jean’ is superb; and ‘Mess Around’ sees the band finally getting rambunctious with a dirty bass riff. Unfortunately, moments of real fun are rare, and despite sounding clean as a whistle, most tracks fall somewhere between decent and instantly forgettable. JF 6/10

A nameless, faceless duo of electronic producers that make infectiously funky dance tracks – no, not Daft Punk but their lesser known Brummie counterparts Letherette. The eponymous debut from the Ninja Tune signees was originally panned by critics for being too derivative of Daft Punk’s Discovery on its release in 2013, but comparisons to such a classic album should surely be celebrated rather than criticised, right? Whilst tracks like ‘Warstones’ sound like they could be taken straight from a Daft Punk B-side, there are still enough highlights on the album that took French house music in a new direction, combining it with influences from more downtempo British artists like Bonobo. An underrated album which deserved much more attention on the dancefloors… SF

Hinds Leave Me Alone Despite having only a few singles and demos to their name, Spanish garage rock outfit Hinds have firmly established themselves as a band to watch in 2016 – and their debut album, Leave Me Alone, entirely justifies these claims. The four-piece from Madrid have a knack for making catchy songs which sound completely effortless; this all blesses the record with a unique, easy-going charm that many better established bands may struggle to replicate. Every track is infectious in its own way, and it’s impossible to listen to standout tracks such as ‘Bamboo’ and prevent a wide grin spreading across your face. The album is built around lo-fi guitar hooks, laidback basslines and crooned vocals, with Ana (lead), Carlotta (guitar) and Ade (bass) all taking turns to chip in with vocals. At times this can lead to some off-key harmonies which only add to the lo-fi, carefree aesthetic of Hinds. Leave Me Alone also shows a different side to their breezy, ‘summer festival band’ image with the odd slow lament crowbarred in between the general upbeat tone of the record – ‘Solar’ and ‘And I Will Send Your Flowers Back’ see feelings laid bare and ex-boyfriends dissed, but they’re welcome reprieves from the energetic raucous of the record. Proving just why they’ve warranted so much attention, Hinds have succeeded in making a debut that captures the sheer enjoyment of being in a rock band and everyone’s invited along for the trip. SF 8/10

Mystery Jets Curve of The Earth Curve of The Earth has been almost two years in the making from Mystery Jets, the aim being to distil each track to its essence and make an album to bring the band back to their roots: prog-rock, apparently. In doing so, their sound has shifted from catchy, indie floorfillers to something much more ethereal and thought-provoking. Opening in interstellar fashion with bleeps of guitar vaguely reminiscent of a satellite circling Earth. The whole album has an astronomical feel to it, from the image of a sunrise from space adorning the cover to lead singer Henry Harrison pondering the power of the moon’s tidal pull on the water in our bodies during the epic-sounding seven minutes of ‘Blood Red Balloon’. The jangly guitar riffs which served them so well in the past are abandoned; instead opting for simple piano motifs and woozy guitar lines which slowly unfurl and create an atmospheric, melodramatic sound throughout. Unlike their earlier material, these tracks weren’t tailor-made for The Leadmill dancefloor; however, listen to ‘1985’ while gazing at the stars from your bedroom window and it’s worth it. TOP PICKS Matthew E White

Plug // January 26 // £14 Virginia crooner Matthew E White will be bringing his extraordinary live show across the pond this month. A true slice of Americana, his laidback vocals are backed by a bold brass section, delicate strings and piano. In order to recreate his multi-layered style in the live setting he will be bringing his Spacebomb band along with him, creating a much bigger sound in comparison to previous solo shows. www.the-plug.com

Minus The Bear

Leadmill // January 26 // £14 Seattle indie rockers Minus The Bear tread the line between playful yet complex music that flits between time signatures. The lyrics have become moodier as the band have matured – there are no more songs titled ‘Houston, We Have Uh-Oh’ – but the bouncy synths and guitar hooks are still present. leadmill.co.uk

Hozier

O2 Academy // January 11 // £25 Hozier was one of the breakout successes of 2015 with single ‘Take Me To Church’ nominated for song of the year at the Grammys. On top of that, with his self-titled debut album selling platinum, two Billboard Awards to his name as well as a coveted Ivor Novello, it looks like the Irish singer-songwriter is stopping at nothing. Hoping to continue this success into 2016 with another sell out tour, catch Hozier before he goes into hibernation in preparation for the highly anticipated followup album. www.o2academysheffield.co.uk

Diet Cig + Bruising

Bungalows and Bears // January 9 // Free Despite only having five songs to their name, indie rockers Diet Cig have already built somewhat of a cult following. The New York duo’s infectious melodies have made them one of the most intriguing bands on the circuit. Joining them at Bungalows will be Bruising, a Leedsbased group who first met through a shared love for Perfect Pussy (fnaar, fnaar). www.bungalowsandbears.com

Adam French

Harley // January 25 // £5.50 Securing a place on the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds as well as support slots for the likes of Rat Boy and Jack Garrett, Adam French is keen to step into the spotlight himself this year as he breaks away on his first headline tour. Bringing music tinged with influences such as Bon Iver, Jose Gonzalez and Bombay Bicycle Club, Adam’s debut tracks consist of drum-led atmospheric indie song ‘The Hunted’ as well as softer piano ballad, ‘Punchbag Love’. www.harleylive.co.uk

Alien Ant Farm

Corporation // January 16 // £17.50 Nu-metal! WOOH! After originally forming 20 years ago, Alien Ant Farm are back on tour for some more fun-loving heavy rock antics. The band were nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 2001 Grammys and reached the masses with their Marmite cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Smooth Criminal’. They will be touring in support of their most recent album Always and Forever, released nine years since their last effort. www.corporation.org.uk

Last month acclaimed reggae artist Gyptian came to Sheffield, performing at the O2 Academy in front of a packed audience. The Jamaican singer has amassed a huge fan base across the world, and this was clear to see with almost every lyric being chorused by the audience throughout. Even though he arrived on stage later than expected, Gyptian’s large stage presence immediately made up for his tardiness; being especially keen to remind his legions of female fans who the songs are dedicated to with excited screams meeting popular songs ‘Wine Slow’, ‘Beautiful Lady’ and signature tune ‘Hold Yuh’ which, as expected, had the whole place jumping as soon as the first piano key was played. Much of Gyptian’s earlier work centred around a more conscious element, no more so than the classic track ‘Serious Times’. The song takes a deep look into precarious nature of life and the world we occupy; though the artist managed to keep the party vibe going whilst making time for the slower stuff. With such an extensive back catalogue, Gyptian could have played for hours and I don’t think anybody would have complained. In reality, it was a relatively short set from the dancehall star; however every song he did play was brimming with energy and passion, and each played to the intense delight of the crowd. Words: Tyrone Scott

Back on the very stage where they played their final show two years ago, Dead Sons returned to The Leadmill in December, to the anticipation of what felt like the whole of Sheffield. Touted as a ‘one-off’ occurrence, the air was thick with expectation for this special show, especially after being warmed up so well by local outfits Bear Chest and Baba Naga – two bands that have done well to fill the Dead Sonsshaped hole in the hearts of many local music fans. Taking to the stage with ‘It’s Raining Men’ by The Weather Girls blasting out of the speakers, a party atmosphere rippled throughout The Leadmill in a matter of minutes before the five-piece launched into a set that saw the return of old favourites like ‘Gasoline’, ‘Bang On Full Turn’, ‘Shotgun Woman’ and ‘Junk Room’, for which ex-Milburner Louis Carnall joined in with. Of course, this went down an absolute treat. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen The Leadmill crowd endure this amount of carnage; perhaps it was the nostalgia of the occasion, or the fact that despite the two year hiatus the band were as tight as ever, and brought just as much raw energy as if they’d never left us at all. Quite simply, this was a mind-blowing evening. Lads, please don’t leave it so long next time. Words: Rachel Heward For more listings and reviews, head to exposedmagazine.co.uk | 83

For a while it seemed that Bowling for Soup had packed up the touring gear for good. After two decades worth of gigs and a farewell tour back in 2013, there were rumours that that would be it. But thankfully – at least for the early-noughties pop punk nostalgists out there (you know who you are) – they’re back for more and arrive at Sheffield’s O2 Academy next month so you can rock out like it’s 2003. Sam Forsdick got on the blower to Texas and woke up a sleepy Jaret Reddick to find out why the band are back and what’s been happening in the meantime. Hey Jaret, how’s Texas treating ya? All good, thanks for asking. It’s much like the UK, just we’ve got good weather. You’ve been in the rock and roll game for a while now. What have been your highlights? Yeah, but it’s too hard to pinpoint

one thing, man. Mostly because we drink a lot so things are a little blurry. Overall, everything has been awesome though. We said right from the start that if it ever stopped being fun we’d finish it, but I’m pleased to say it’s still just as fun as ever. But how does touring now compare with your early gigs? In the early days it was like fighting for survival. You’d be booked in for these small gigs and I’d always worry whether anyone would actually show up. Now we don’t have to worry about that; it’s much nicer to see the ticket sales before we go on tour and know that people are keen to see us. Back in 2013 you said it would be the last time you ever tour the UK. What made you change your mind? Just to reiterate, farewell never meant goodbye, we just needed a break. People tend to take

things too literally. To be a bit more honest, there was a lot of shit going on with the band at the time and we just couldn’t keep travelling all over the globe. Fans still want to see our shows over in the UK, so now we’ve had some time out we’re happy to be coming back to oblige them. So, will this be the final farewell tour? No, I don’t think this will be it. It won’t be every year but hopefully we’ll be able to figure out a good balance. Now you’re back, are there any plans to get back in the studio and make some new music? Yeah! In fact, that’s how we’re gonna spend next year. When we’ve finished the UK tour we’ll head back to the studio and hopefully have some stuff to release pretty soon after. We’re thinking of doing this one a bit differently and releasing songs over the course of the year rather

than all at once in an album – we think it’d work better that way. There have always been huge doses of humour in your music and at times it seems the key ingredient. Are you naturally a funny guy? Well, I wanted to be a stand-up comedian before I ever thought about being a musician. Now I get to do both in the band. I’m surrounded by funny people and it helps make the shows fun. It’s impossible to feel down on tour because whenever you’re missing home someone will come along and make you laugh – it’s great! After gigging for such a long time, do you stick to the same formula or mix things up a bit with the tours? I will say that this will be unlike any Bowling for Soup show we’ve done before. We’ve always been known for putting on a fun live show – but this is gonna be something else entirely!

Bear Tree Records Many predicted that it wouldn’t last, but the vinyl revolution is still in full swing. Even supermarket giants Tesco have recently announced that they will for the first time in history begin selling vinyl records, a move that in itself demonstrates the huge surge in popularity of music pressed in the vinyl format over the last few years. Jumping on this trend is Bear Tree Records, an off-shoot of record label Blackest Rainbow, and the latest record shop to join a handful

of local gems in Sheffield. Located in one of the upstairs craft workshops in Orchard Square – just up the stairs next to Waterstones – the shop provides both new releases and second-hand records covering a wide range of genres. Owner Joe Blanchard takes the time to write a descriptive note on all the records he sells demonstrating his own passion for vinyl and giving his customers that much more reason to come back and buy from his shop.

Opening Times: Wednesday - Saturday: 10am - 6pm, Sunday: 12pm - 4pm. Head to beartreerecords.com for more

Limp Bizkit – My Generation

‘Hey, kid, take my advice, you don’t wanna step into a big pile of shit.’ Wise words there from behatted frontman Fred Durst, but unfortunately that’s precisely what millions did after purchasing the band’s third album, Chocolate Starfish and The Hotdog Flavoured Water, and listening to Durst direct his rage at nobody in particular by saying the f word a lot (46 times in ‘Hotdog’, as he gleefully points out). [I may or may not have purchased this record as a yoot and loved it. But yes, in retrospect, it’s pure bobbar – Ed.]

Crazy Town – Butterfly

‘Come, mah lady, come come, mah lady, you’re mah butterfly. Sugar. Baby.’ Douche rock personified with tribal tattoos, bleached hair, excess facial piercings and some truly horrendous rap verses thrown in to complete the sorry ensemble.

Alient Ant Farm – Smooth Criminal

It doesn’t take much to besmirch the name of Michael Jackson nowadays, let’s be honest. But Californian rockers Alien Ant Farm started dishing out the dirt prematurely with this particularly irksome cover song back in 2001.

MONGRELS RETURN Sheffield-based MC and artist Kid Acne has teamed up with DJ Benjamin once again to form hip-hop duo Mongrels, releasing the two-track 7” You Dig Raps? as a follow-up to their Low Budget/ High Concept EP earlier this year. Their DIY attitude and shared passion for old school hip-hop shines through again on this record which also features guest

vocals from Sebash, of legendary ‘90s NYC outfit New Kingdom, as well as a remixed version of ‘Combat Divers’ by fellow New Kingdom affiliate Scotty Hard. The record will be on a limited release of 200 copies worldwide, each with a hand-pulled screenprint sleeve, four alternative covers designed by Kid Acne and an A6 tattoo transfer sheet inside.

Puddle of Mudd – Blurry

The big question: were they worse than Nickelback? Is that even possible? Either way, if you were watching Kerrang! at any point during the early-noughties, you were bound to be exposed to at least one of these whiny post-grunge shithouses, complaining about stuff and flicking their hair around.

Evanescence – Bring Me To Life

Just as the nu-metal scene seemed to be dying out, Evanescence released ‘Bring Me To Life’ in 2003 [It’s a tune, though – Ed] and threw a nice gothic slant on it all. Thanks for that. People bought into it; but people also bought into New Labour in the early-noughties. You can’t trust people.

The Christmas holiday is traditionally something of a musical vacuum where band members, songwriters and hobbyists everywhere forgo their habitual rituals of sitting through the wee hours in front of a computer trying to find the lost chord or the last word. All those hours usually whittled away looking for a suitable rhyme for orange (good luck with that) or perfecting the ultimate guitar solo are put to one side in favour of family gettogethers, work dos and present buying sm¬ash and grabs. Now the dust has settled over the space where the tree was, and you’ve finally returned those unwanted M & S undies, you’ll doubtless be starting to get excited about your musical aspirations again. This year, I hear the musicians amongst you say; this will be your year for musical world domination. You might finally get to finish your song, EP, album, triple live box set and/or rock opera. But perhaps it’s time to be honest, there was probably a reason why you didn’t finish your musical works last year – and it might not be the reason you thought it was. You may have put it down to not having the right equipment. After all, Jimmy Page couldn’t play Stairway to Heaven without his Gibson double-neck guitar. And every symphony orchestra in world needs millions of pounds worth of Stradivarious violins to make the correct sound. So it only stands to reason you won’t make your masterpiece without an original Yamaha cs80 synth (current value 20-40k). Or perhaps your dilemma is band mates. You aren’t going to make a good noise until you have found this generation’s John Bonham. After all, every classic band had the ultimate drummer, right? What would Nirvana have sounded like without Grohl?

Who would have enjoyed The Who without Keith Moon? This would certainly account for a lack of musical progress. Or could it be that you are in a musical rut? The musician’s version of writer’s block certainly sounds like a good cause of premature idea death. It’s almost got a medical ring to it: ‘I can’t possibly have any good ideas at the moment. I’m in a musical rut for goodness sake!’ So here is the secret you have been looking for. The creative equivalent of The Lost Ark. The musical secret like ancient sanskrit edicts. Ready? Ok. Here goes... FEEL SOMETHING. Yup, that’s it folks. That’s what you actually need. Music happens quite instinctively when humans feel something. Love, pain, excitement, tragedy – any human emotion will transport you out of your everyday state enough to get a musically creative person running to their instrument/note pad/ iPhone memo. That’s why music is an art form, not a craft. It’s an expression of feelings which have no words, just an energy needing to be conveyed. So you can get off eBay, bidding on that 1959 Gibson Les Paul is only going to lead to bankruptcy anyway. Just get out, hear some live music, climb a mountain, fall in love, visit an art gallery, help a stranger and you will be filled with the energy that songs are made of. And if not, don’t beat yourself up. There’s no shortage of music being made worldwide, so don’t feel bad if you aren’t adding to all that noise. Make something special when you feel it and do something more fun when you don’t. Ah, if only everything in life was that simple.

Psychedelic prog-rock five-piece and local faves Hey Sholay are back and have a big year lined up. With new releases coming, a slot at Outlines Festival confirmed and whispers of an album in the works doing the rounds, we caught up with the lads to see how things were progressing. Hi guys, so after a relatively quiet period you’ve released two tracks towards the end of the year. Does this point towards big plans for 2016? Yes! Our last album ((O)) and the quick follow up EP Clouds, Castles, ______, both with Fierce Panda Records, was a very exciting time for us. As a band, we got to tour the UK, play festivals across Europe, do a live session for BBC 6 Music to name a few highlights. Towards the end of the album campaign, we fell to some misfortune as our van was stolen with every bit of gear we owned inside. This meant we had to replace everything from scratch and dust ourselves off. We had the opportunity to work with some amazing producers and people with a little space and perspective to really make the kind of music we love. These tracks are the first instalment of what’s to come from us. Hopefully, next year will see more releases, an album with tours and everything around it. We’re in a good place at the moment and really excited about where it could go. The latest single, ‘Ribcage’, is another beautifully melodic belter. Lovely stuff. How do you

think you’ve progressed as a band since you first started out? Thank you. Yeah, as a band we have some many varied influences which means H/S is constantly evolving and growing in some way. Having the time to write and record new material helps us to progress as a band. And every practice room experimentation, live show, radio sessions, etc., ultimately make you grow and develop. By the way, little ribcage fact for ya: despite offering vital protection to your organs, you

can break ribs by just sneezing. So, you know, be careful out there. Erm, thanks! You guys love a zany video. Can we expect one to accompany the single release? Yes definitely – we have one ready and waiting right now. That should be landing any day now, so keep ‘em peeled! You came home with a gig at The Picture House Social last month. How did it feel to play in front of a Sheffield audience for the first time in a few months?

It was amazing. Obviously, we love Sheffield and our shows here are always very special to us. It just makes it all worth it when you see a full room of people singing back at you. Are there plans to fit in a few more local gigs over the next couple of months? We are also starting to plan our biggest home town show to date, but we can’t say too much about that yet. More details to follow – sorry! Speaking of local gigs, you’ve been announced on the lineup for the first Outlines Festival. How do you think the event is shaping up? We’re really looking forward to this one. We’ll be playing O2 Academy, which is actually a first for H/S as a band. The people behind it are great and know exactly what they’re doing. If it grows to be anything like Tramlines then it will be definitely a regular fixture in the UK festival scene. It’s great to have something for bands and music fans to look forward to in winter on our doorstep. Is there anybody on the line-up you’re going to try and see? We’re going to try and catch Roots Manuva, Pins, Kagoule, and Trash (I think we played with them over the summer actually). To be honest, we’ll just soak in as many acts as we can over the day. Finally, what resolutions are you having a go at this year? We’re a 5 piece band; this list could be endless….

From the people who bring you the award-winning Tramlines festival every year comes Outlines, an all-dayer event spanning across various city centre venues and spaces. Not content with throwing just one big bash a year, the team have decided to spice things up, bringing the party to the likes of Plug, the O2 Academy, The Harley, Queens Social Club and Skate Central’s roller rink on February 27th. Topping the bill is the inimitable hip-hop artist Roots Manuva, whose sixth studio album Bleeds was released this year to wide critical acclaim. And the latest line-up announcement sees influential Leeds post-punk band Gang of Four added to the roster, alongside electronica artist Shura and psych-poppers Pumarosa.

Outlines’ Head of Programming Kate Hewett said: “In Gang of Four, we’re delighted to have added a group of genuine musical masters to the bill. Alongside headliner Roots Manuva, we’re bringing two of the most vital British artists of all time to Outlines.” Local talent is represented too, with bands like Hey Sholay, TRASH and Thee Mightees a part of the line-up. Thee Mightees said: “Outlines will be the first festival that we’ve played music at and we are all flattered that the organisers have chosen us ahead of hundreds of other emerging artists who could have played on the bill. We’ve only played a hatful of shows so I guess that shows faith in our music, so we will be keen to put on a good show.”

Elsewhere, local garage/hip-hop/ grime crew Unit 3 will be taking over The Harley and Sheffield club promoters Banana Hill will be at Queens Social Club, making up the official late night after parties for festival ticket holders. Welcome to 2016: a new year, a new start, all filled with hope and aspiration... Ok, maybe that’s a bit much, but I’m trying to sound upbeat because at this time of year I, like many of you, have embarked upon my annual mission to simultaneously quit smoking and drinking, lose four stone, find true love and bring about world peace – while trying not to be a mardy cow about it all. Meanwhile, back in the real world, when I admit defeat on all of the above (usually by lunchtime on January 1st as the hangover wears off and I reach for my first cigarette) as the new year blurs back into view there’s a few new things we could check out this year. Whether you don’t drink anyway, left your liver behind at Dempsey’s New Year bash or just fancy trying out something new, why not head down to LGBT Sheffield’s pop-up cafe on Union Street. Open every Tuesday 10am-6pm, you can just call in for a coffee or check out their calendar of events on the LGBT Sheffield Facebook page. Find the scene a little male and/or youth dominated? If you fancy expanding your circle of female friends then try WHAT, a group for Lesbian, Bisexual and Trans* women over 25 at the Together Women Project. The group meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month and run a range of activities

from arts and cookery workshops to film and relaxation nights. Putting the ‘social’ in social networking we have Out of Office, a social group for LGBT Professionals, with events taking place once or twice a month ranging between boat trips, restaurant socials and theatre trips – it’s the perfect way to expand your friendship group and check out some of Sheffield’s cultural offerings. For those of you under the age of 25, and in addition to the LGBT social groups at both universities, there is Off The Scene (under 25) and Fruitbowl (under 18) both meeting weekly in the city centre, and back in the day – not that long ago! – this was where I met some of my best friends. These are just a handful of the many varied offerings amongst Sheffield’s LGBT community – there are many more beside, check out the websites/ Facebook pages of LGBT Sheffield, Pride Sheffield and Gay Sheffield for more comprehensive listings than I can fit here. Happy exploring, I’m off to fill my new Hello Kitty diary with an array of new groups and activities for me to try out. Until next time, Lots of New Year love and alka seltzer,

Angry Video Game Nerd Reviews: Are The Games Really THAT Bad? Since 2006, the Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) has been posting reviews of games he deems terrible, unplayable, and so forth. A lot of the time, he is right and I can’t argue one bit (Superman 64, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, E.T.); however there are times I think he’s being a little unfair. And as much as I love The Nerd, you just have to play these games for yourself, then make up your own mind.

Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest Simon’s Quest did take a departure from its predecessor, in the way there is no linear path to take – there are no stages, rather an open-world of sorts that promotes exploration and puzzle solving. Intimidating at first, Simon’s Quest can be challenging as hell but once you get to terms with how the game works, you’ll have a good time, I promise you. This is one of those games that, with a little determination, will reward you with a massive sense of satisfaction. A Nightmare On Elm Street I don’t really know what is going on in this game to be honest with you – nothing really makes sense. But it doesn’t matter – the gameplay is pretty damn fun, whether it be killing massive rats, navigating different locations within

BY KIERAN WADE Springwood, or taking on Krueger himself... multiple times. Battletoads Now, Battletoads is one of the hardest games of all time; however it does manage to flow really well with the use of multiple gameplay elements. With practice, you’ll be getting through Battletoads like it’s no business, just don’t fall into the trap of ‘this game is bad because it’s too hard’ – Battletoads is hard, but fair. And awesome. Ninja Gaiden This starts off as a relatively easy game, but once you get onto stage 2, you’ll be getting game over screens like there’s no tomorrow. This is another extremely difficult game, but don’t let that overwhelm you, just take your time, memorise enemy movements, and you’ll eventually be kicking this game in its (ninja) arse. Metal Gear With the massive success of Metal Gear Solid throughout the years, Metal Gear has sort of been forgotten. It does have some flaws, but this is a must-play for any fans of the series as it consists of gameplay elements that were way ahead of its time. Some key characters in this game will ring a bell if you’re familiar with the franchise in any way, so play it. Play it until your fingers come off.

: 2016 The year of the Colon!

Ali Bianchi looks ahead to what 2016 has to offer film-lovers... As has become standard, the biggest releases of 2016 are set to be sequels, reboots or franchises. However, in an effort to trick us, Hollywood (those cheeky monkeys) have taken to replacing a number with a colon. So now, instead of Captain America 3, we have ‘Captain America: Civil War’, which is much more interesting. Hopefully. It is this Marvel film, and DC/Warner Bro’s ‘Batman v Superman <COLON> Dawn of Justice’, that is set to be this year’s battle royale. Initially scheduled for the same release day, these two superhero collisions are likely to duke it out to take the year’s highest gross (leaving aside a certain adventure taking place in a galaxy far, far away, at the year’s end). Captain America

vs Iron Man VERSUS Batman vs Superman would have once seemed to be inevitably in DC’s favour, but with Marvel’s meteoric rise, and a decidedly mixed response to current trailers for the Justice League setup, it will be interesting to see who takes the greater spoils. There are, of course multiple other comic book movies this year. Marvel Studios have Dr Strange, exploring the more mystical elements of Marvel’s universe, and starring the delightful Benedict Cumberbatch. X-Men continues to be a strong series, with X-men <COLON> Apocalypse raising the global catastrophe stakes still further. 20th Century Fox also have a wildcard in an R-rated Deadpool movie which could be a surprise

hit, while Suicide Squad, about a team of bad guys forced to work for the government, is Warner Bros second, and actually more intriguing, comic book title. Elsewhere, we are heading into space with Star Trek Beyond, continuing the new adventures of Kirk and the team. Rogue One <COLON> A Star Wars Story, is the first of a series of standalone adventures set in the fictional universe, exploring the exploits of the rebel fighters who stole the plans for the original Death Star. Disney have a lot riding on this film as they seek to expand the world of Star Wars beyond the story of the new trilogy. However,

these two pale when placed next to the arrival of the sequel to the greatest film ever made, Independence Day <COLON> Resurgence. ‘We always knew those pesky aliens would come back, but this time we are ready’ – sounds like a recipe for further awesomeness to me! There’s more comedy, though largely in the form of sequels (ironically with the very unfunny suffix of the number “2”). Zoolander 2 is a welcome sequel, whereas it is difficult to see who was actually demanding a sequel to 2002’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Whoever it was, will be happy to learn that there’s a

film review

number 2 on the way. For the kids, Kung Fu Panda 3 is on the horizon, as is Finding Dory, the long overdue follow-up to Finding Nemo. However, it is Disney’s Zootopia that looks the most promising. Trailers suggest something quite unique, and if you haven’t yet seen the one with the sloths, please search for it right now. Actual LOL. Outside of these, Tarantino returns with The Hateful Eight, about a set of bounty hunters caught in a blizzard in post-Civil War Wyoming, involving a plot of betrayal and deception. And finally, set in the world of Harry Potter (world building franchises is another theme of 2016), Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them follows a writer exploring the secret community of wizards and witches, 70 years before the events of the bespectacled Potter. T’is a big year ahead!

film review

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (12A) At the very outset, let’s ease your minds: The Force Awakens is better than any one of the Star Wars prequels – by about a million per cent! More important, however, is the fact that this latest in the Star Wars saga is actually better than it needed to be, standing proudly shoulder-to-shoulder with any of the original trilogy. Director JJ Abrams and the team have managed to create a film that is a noble extension to the beloved universe, full of romance and the thrill of adventure. Every frame oozes a nostalgic quality. Gone are the paper-thin CG environments, and returned are the real world environments, with their dusty, lived-in feel. Old friends mix with the new in a way that feels natural to the story, rather than simply shoe-horned in. John Williams’ epic score carries proceedings with energy and enthusiasm, adding a mythic quality to each scene. Even the lightsaber battles – so manically over-choreographed in the prequels – have the same sweaty workmanship of the

classic Skywalker/Vader duels. This is a film that understands the debt it owes. Occasionally flying perilously close to being a reboot of ‘A New Hope’ with regard to plot and character beats, it manages to avoid pastiche by injecting the familiar with fresh and talented actors. The overwhelming sense is that this is about passing on a baton (or a lightsaber, if you will), rather than attempting to relive former glories – a mistake Abrams previously made with ‘Star Trek: Into Darkness’. Fans of Star Wars can find very little to complain about. The Force Awakens is joyful and energetic, overblown and intimate, set in a galaxy of breath-taking scale and beauty. And it’s just really great fun! The film does raise more questions than it answers, which after such a long wait is slightly frustrating, but also serves to highlight that this is only the beginning. The Force has awoken, and now is ready to stretch its legs… Rating: 4/5

The Peanuts Movie (U) It would seem that nostalgia is the order of the day in the world of movies right now. However, where Star Wars and Star Trek are very much aware of the need to bring their older audience with them, ‘The Peanuts Movie’ is a more clearly focussed on finding a new audience for these classic characters. While it is a bouncy, enjoyable ride, the film maintains the same sense of melancholy as the classic Schultz comic strips, as Charlie Brown and his band of armchair psychologists evaluate and learn from their various successes and, mostly, failures. It is frequently funny, and as a trip down memory lane, it’s a welcome and enjoyable treat for parents, but it is doubtful whether Snoopy and the crew will manage to succeed in winning over that new audience it aims for. Rating: 3/5

2015: The Best and The Worst Saul Holmes sorts out the triumphs from the turkeys in 2015 FAVOURITE FILMS 2015

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD

Not only is Fury Road one of the best films of the year, it also serves as an excellent lesson in storytelling. From the smallest detail to the biggest fight scene, every physical act in the film is caused by and affects change. Most action movies deliver adrenaline in bursts, but director George Miller trusts that we can handle the rolling thunder of Fury Road. Charlize Theron’s performance as Furiosa provides one the greatest female characters in cinema history, and one of the very best action heroes to boot.

INSIDE OUT

Without a doubt, Inside Out is Disney Pixar’s best film since Toy Story 3 was released five years ago. A fulfilment of a narrative concept which has featured fleetingly in animation for years, Inside Out is in many ways typical Pixar fare. The strong themes are family, friendship, memories and growing up. The familiarities of Inside Out are definitely a strength, it feels like the near perfection of a formula Disney has been working on for over 20 years. The strong cast, boasting comedy stars such as Amy Poehler, Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling, the potential for raw emotion to spill over is smoothed out by real comedic chemistry,

INSURGENT

Despite lacking the captivating narrative of rival franchise The Hunger Games, the first Divergent film boasted a fantastic female lead in the form of Shailene Woodley, and overall was quite good. The same can’t be said of the sequel. The poorly orchestrated plot twists feel like flip flopping, and many of Insurgent’s problems seem to be rooted in the source material. However, ultimately the film falls victim to the splitting of the final book, Allegiant, into two films, a cynical move which has disrupted the three act structure of the trilogy, perhaps irreversibly.

FANTASTIC FOUR

making Inside Out also one of the funniest Pixar films ever.

AMY

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Amy is that the film manages to be revealing about Winehouse, even though her life was one of the most intruded and speculated on in the 21st century. Furthermore, what’s revealed is not the cold hard facts, but the intangible sensation of who Amy Winehouse was. Ultimately, Amy achieves what any documentary sets out to, by telling a story which informs its audience intellectually and emotionally.

LEAST FAVOURITE FILMS 2015 THE DUFF

The DUFF would have felt dated ten years ago. A tired film in an outdated example of an ever changing genre, with a forgettable script and performances, The DUFF is merely the latest example of a teen film which completely fails to capture any of the reality of modern life for young people. Teen comedy now inhabits a space where films like 21 Jump Street can dismiss the old tropes of movie high school with a shrug. The post-Superbad, post-Easy A world has no place for a film like The DUFF.

Red Carpet Treatment Always looking for new ways to broaden the entertainment appeal of cinema going, last month Cineworld Sheffield launched their first ever premium VIP Experience. Aiming to impress, guests are given the full VIP treatment the moment they enter the cinema, being escorted to an exclusive private lounge ahead of their movie screening. A gourmet food buffet prepared by a local chef is served with unlimited soft drinks available on tap. Guests are also able to purchase a variety of alcoholic drinks from the private bar and take all their favourite cinema snacks into the movie with them. For ultimate comfort the two intimate, exclusive

screens are fitted with 40 ‘lazy boy’ reclining seats and individual tables, so the struggles of fumbling around in the dark trying to find your sweets are now gone. Karen Godfrey, General Manager at Cineworld Sheffield said about the scheme: “We’re extremely excited to be launching Cineworld’s first VIP Experience at Cineworld Sheffield. We are confident this new way to watch a movie will be a huge hit with cinemagoers wanting a premium experience.” The Cineworld VIP Experience costs £29 per person and the whole experience (excluding alcohol) is included in the price. Even though plenty of exciting superhero movies are scheduled for release this year, 2015 showed the pitfalls of the genre which now dominates the box office. While Joss Whedon flung shit at a wall in Avengers: Age of Ultron, hoping something would stick, Paul Rudd struggled to break the shackles of the dullest script Marvel has yet produced in AntMan. However, Fantastic Four was by far the worst of the bunch. With a stretched introduction, no discernible second act and an unsatisfying conclusion, a film which showed so much potential ended up becoming one of the worst of the year.

Little information is really known about the old Jacob’s Engineering Factory. A quick Google search throws up a plethora of industrial estate agents trying their best to flog the 3.38 acres site as best they can, but it’s sat dormant for as long as I can remember, so I guess they aren’t doing such a great job… The site consists of a huge main warehouse made up of four corrugated roofs, amongst other little off-shot rooms. The roof isn’t in great shape with the elements filtering through. Covered in grime and mould the inside is like one giant puddle, with some sky lights letting in moderate light. The factory floor consists mainly of the two far walls covered in graffiti pieces, along the right side are a couple of rooms and a set of stairs which all house more graffiti and basically a jungle, as one room was so overgrown it had a tree taking up the

entire space! The dank, dark atmosphere makes the colour of the pieces really pop and with bountiful puddles there are reflection shots galore. The walls are adorned with the usual suspects: Phlegm, Colorati, Faunagraphic, Rocket01 and plenty more. In the courtyard a makeshift mini skate park has been built by Sheffield skaters and covered in lesser-known artists’ pieces, many involving skate culture such as Sheffield brand Sex Skateboards. Let’s hope the estate agents continue to be unsuccessful in their endeavours so the skaters can keep skating, the graffers can keep graffing and we Urbexers can keep snooping! and we Urbexers can keep snooping!
