It’s been ten years now since Tramlines Festival first arrived in Sheffield, and suffice to say, it’s been nothing short of a gamechanger for the city. What previously would have been a quiet weekend for many music venues, who often took a hit once the student population took their leave for the summer, has been transformed into our biggest annual party – showcasing hundreds of artists and packing out pubs, bars and clubs with thousands of festivalgoers. Naturally, over time the festival has been through some big changes. Last year saw the main event move to the roomier surroundings of Hillsborough Park, while over in the centre Sheffield City Council, Sheffield BID and Tramlines Festival worked together in curating the Fringe at Tramlines. Over at Exposed Magazine, a longstanding partner of Tramlines and ardent supporter of the local music scene, our job is to bring together all of the diverse events and performances into one easily navigable publication (that would be this thing in your hands, dear reader). Musical innovation and creativity flows through the very veins of this city; from its pioneering influence on UK synth-pop in the 80s to Jarvis Cocker becoming one of Britpop’s most iconic characters, not to mention those Arctic Monkeys chaps making something of a splash in the noughties. Buoyed by such a rich history, there’s a constant stream of talented local artists coming through the ranks – so many of which you’ll be able to catch during The Fringe at Tramlines this year. Plenty of work has gone into ensuring it will remain a varied offering, with something for those of all ages and tastes to enjoy. The Fringe Stage on Devonshire Green, programmed by Papa Al of famous international music night Juju Club, is one of the main highlights and will again be showcasing a wide range of global music with a local twist. Topping the bill are the inimitable 12-piece ska act Jungle Lion, who will once again be bringing some energetic party vibes to the main stage. If DJs are more your thing, they don’t come much bigger or more eclectic than a Gilles Peterson set.
The renowned artist, broadcaster and label owner will be playing at Peddler Warehouse on Saturday, supported by some of the North’s finest DJ collectives. You’ll be able to find plenty of other late-night shenanigans listed in this programme if you’re looking to keep things going until the wee hours. Pretty much every pub and bar will be getting involved, and whether you prefer the city’s traditional gig haunts such as The Washington and The Frog and Parrot, or somewhere a tad grander like Sheffield City Hall and the ever-popular Crystal Bar, there really is plenty to go at. Aside from the veritable smorgasbord of live music on offer, there’ll be street performers in Barker’s Pool, an 80s/90s disco in Peace Gardens, a traditional funfair on Fargate, plus plenty of street food vendors and pop-up bars on-hand to keep you well-fed and watered. Don’t forget you can keep up to date with all the latest happenings by following the official Tramlines social media channels, while exposedmagazine.co.uk is a handy place to stay up to date with any fresh announcements. It’s back! The many-headed multitentacled beautiful thing that is Sheffield’s annual fringe at Tramlines event. To say it’s the diverse treat you’ve come to expect would be to do a grave disservice to the fizzing and popping line-up of undiscovered, breaking and headline musical names, big communal moments, left-field activities and pop-up events that will take place across the city over Festival Weekend. It’s here, and our job is to guide you through it…
Church – Temple of Jazz // Sunday
Bring your Fringe at Tramlines party to an opportune climax with the Temple of Jazz, kicking off at 4.20pm and taking you through the Sunday evening. Blancmange Lounge takes over the Temple of Fun to bring you an evening of the best jazz, R&B and soul from across the world. Live acts will take the stage throughout the evening – including hypnagogic bedroom soul crooner Jackie Moonbather, Leeds based vocalist B-ahwe, the melancholic beats of Tonia Victoria and plenty of others.
The Peace Gardens will be completely transformed over the weekend with licensed bars, an 80s/90s disco, a big helter skelter and plenty of deckchairs to kick back in. There will also be an exciting and varied range of food traders present - providing the perfect spot to enjoy the festivities.
Barker’s Pool // Saturday and Sunday
Slap-bang in the centre of the city, Barker’s Pool will be playing host to some of the best street entertainers on the UK circuit. The University of Sheffield will once again bring a two day programme of great street entertainers featuring acts that regularly perform at Covent Garden and Glastonbury. This year’s line-up is also supported by Orchard Square and features (amongst others) George Orange from Chicago, The Comedy Waiters and the infamous Granny Turismo. In addition to performing in Barker’s Pool, some will also roam the streets of the city centre, helping to create a unique festival feel.
Peddler Warehouse - Giles Peterson // Saturday
There’s no better way to crown off your Saturday night than by heading down to Peddler to party with DJ legend, Giles Peterson. The BBC 6Music presenter and purveyor of the finest world music take to the stage for a 2 hour dancefloor journey with support from some of the North’s finest DJs – Banana Hill, Nice Like Rice and Apricot Ballroom. This is not one to be missed, the ex-industrial warehouse is the perfect place to get your groove on and enjoy some good music.

The Fringe at Tramlines Stage on Devonshire Green has been programmed by Papa Al, of the JuJu Club - originally a Sheffield club night with live music from around the world - and will represent the best ‘made in Sheffield’ acts with some international additions. The highlights of the weekend are on Saturday - the big, brassy sound of Jungle Lion, the outlandish antics of Latin music lovers Mango Rescue Team and home-grown rap talent from Medley. Join them for a good sing-a-long on Sunday, which will include a 20 strong brass band, The Tin Soldiers and the funk and soulful stylings of Son Montuno and Papa Soul.

Whether you’re looking to create your first release, or make a statement with a deluxe boxset, Breed Media can help to guide you from start to finish. Operating out of the Workstation, the team has been manufacturing for music and media since 2008. They’ve worked with some great bands from Sheffield, such as the ‘Everly Pregnant Brothers’, ‘In The Nursery’ and ‘Heaven 17’, along with many acts based further afield such as ‘Sleaford Mods’, ‘Goat’ and ‘Edwyn Collins’. Breed is run by Graham, Jack & Ben, three Northerners who have found a home in the Steel City. With an extensive amount of experience in the design and music industries, along with a strong belief that making a record should be as enjoyable as listening to one, the trio are the perfect fit for independent labels and bands looking to make beautiful physical media.

PINK CIGS If dirty stinking rock riffs, impromptu moshpits and Somerset cider are your sort of bag, Sheff four-piece PINK CIGS could well be your next favourite live act. We checked in with the Ciggies ahead of the carnage.
What’s the PINK CIGS story to date? Give us the full shebang. Sheffield super group PINK CIGS are a bubble and squeak of dry heaves, skip lickers, Dead English Gentlemen and Halcyon Days fuelled by all things alcoholic and rock'n'roll. We developed over time to brew our 70s hard rock sound. Last year, we brought out our debut EP which was featured in Classic Rock magazine’s compilation of the best new bands on the planet. The EP was also featured on a live session for BBC Introducing’s Februheavy month. Currently, we are getting ready for Tramlines, as well as other gigs throughout the country. At the backend of October, we're going to be heading out to tour Europe. How have you been prepping for the Fringe at Tramlines? Press-ups? Plenty of fluids? Practising your instruments perhaps? What do you mean prepare for Woodstock – sorry, the Fringe at Tramlines – we were born ready! For those out there, perhaps attending their first Fringe at Tramlines, who are unaware of what you guys are all about, how would you neatly and succinctly sum up the PINK CIGS shtick? Picture the toilet bowl after Sabbath, Deep Purple and James Gang went for a big stinking curry at Balti King… That’s us!

Best Fringe at Tramlines memories? For us, it’s probably the gig we played at BrewDog last year. We headlined the Sunday and blew the roof off. Everyone had a banger – there was beer everywhere and people dancing on the tables. Worst Fringe at Tramlines memories? All the previous years that PINK CIGS were never on! We hear on the grapevine that there’s some new music on the way. Tell us more… We recorded our debut EP with James Atkinson at Station Studios in Leeds. Over the past year, we have been recording our follow-up to this in our own DIY studio (Harvest Studios) which we’ve built down at Kelham Island to take our time and develop the sound of the band. If you could invite one person to a PINK CIGS gig, someone who needs some PINK CIGS action in their life, who would it be and why? We’ve been inviting the CEO of Thatchers Cider down to all of our shows since we started gigging – but to no avail. So if you like a can of Thatchers and hard rock, then come on down!
