Welcome to The Fringe at Tramlines Believe it or not, Tramlines is ten this year. You heard it. If we’re not careful, before long it will be going to big school and staying up after 9 o’clock. So it’s a landmark year for the festival…and one that has seen the main event move to the larger surroundings of Hillsborough Park, as well as the official launch of The Fringe at Tramlines, where we bring all the free happenings around the city under one, great, big, happy umbrella. The Fringe at Tramlines is a collaboration between Sheffield City Council, Sheffield BID (Business Improvement District) and Tramlines Festival. And they have collaborated with us here at Exposed Magazine to produce this programme and bring all the events under one roof. There is heaps going on, including outdoor stages, impromptu performances across the city and musical delights in every nook and cranny of Sheffield city centre. Sheffield is a city to be proud of. Our musical heritage is world-beating and this weekend-long celebration gives everyone a chance to join the party. As you’ll see, there is more than just music on offer. Devonshire Green will play host to the Fringe Stage, featuring global music with a Sheffield twist and the best in fresh and exciting bands from across the country. A big screen at The Peace Gardens will give you a chance to stay in tune with all that’s happening across the city as well as featuring outdoor screenings of classic musicals such as Sing, Moana and Grease. We also have street theatre presented By The University of Sheffield’s Professor Vanessa in Barker’s Pool at the City Hall, which includes roaming circus performers, busking stages and even a brand new parkour performance from ‘The Boulderers’ that can be followed through the city.
Meanwhile, if it’s hot, up-and-coming music you’re after, then The Fringe at Tramlines is where you’ll find it. Highlights from the pubs and bars around the city include a superb selection of local and UK-wide acts on at staple venues like Crystal and The Frog and Parrot from Friday to Sunday, while The Washington's location right next to the Fringe Stage means it's always home to a great atmosphere. Throw into the mix an intoxicating weekend of blues and ale at CADS, some serious funk and soul at Leopold Square (a highlight being Saturday’s show from Universal Tree), while venues like Maida Vale (which has ex-Seahorses lead singer Chris Helme on the bill) and Shakespeares have live music literally wall to wall from Friday through ‘til close of play Sunday, so there really is no let up. Don’t forget you can keep in touch with what’s going on at the main festival with all of Tramlines social media channels, while Exposed Magazine will be keeping you up to date with all things Fringe. The Tramlines Times, the festival’s daily newspaper comes out each morning, and will have all the latest reviews, news, interviews and updates from the main festival and the fringe. It’s also good for a paper aeroplane or two. The bottom line is that The Fringe at Tramlines is a celebration of the best of Sheffield. Make sure you’re a part of it.

Professing Green
Although it’ll all be going off city-wide, the Fringe Stage at Devonshire Green will, as always, be a focal point over the weekend. With an emphasis of inclusivity across all ages and backgrounds this year’s line-up has a world-music feel perfect for that summer sun, hands-in-the-air, all-together vibe that Tramlines excels at. Saturday is programmed by Papa Al, so expect infectious reggae grooves, afro-beat, jazz, ska, and funk from midday onwards, and a more local-looking line-up perfect for those who want to keep it going into the Sunday.
Keeping the Peace It’s back! The many-headed multitentacled beautiful thing that is Sheffield’s annual Fringe at the Tramlines Festival. To say it’s the smorgasbord you’ve come to expect would do a grave disservice to the fizzing and popping line-up of undiscovered, breaking and headline musical names, big communal moments, left-field activities and pop-up events that will take place across the city over festival weekend. It’s here, and we’re here to guide you through it… 6 | the fringe at tramlines programme
Summer in Sheffield can be summed up in one image: children of all ages (some with mortgages and proper responsibilities and stuff) splashing around in the sun in the Peace Garden’s fountains. Always a draw on festival weekend, this year the organisers are going with a family-friendly vibe. A big screen will be showing classics for all ages to enjoy, so if you need a break from the bacchanalian debauchery that we’re sure will be happening elsewhere, or just want to hang out, get yerself and the munchkins down, bag a pew, and settle in. Kick-off is at twelve on both days.
Crystal
For a few years now, Crystal has regularly played host to one of the best fringe line-ups at Tramlines, and this year is no exception. Programmed by Aggressive Management, the live music kicks off at 6.30pm Friday and there’s no let up until close of play Sunday. Among the top acts on the bill are long-running indie tunesters Alvarez Kings, anthemic rock purveyors Sabella as well as bluesy rock and roll meisters Liberty Ship. You could literally bed yourself in here all weekend.

Of course, Tramlines is about more than music. It’s always been celebrated by the whole city with all sorts of events and activities. This year is no different. Starting at midday on Saturday and Sunday, Barkers Pool presents some of the biggest names in festival and street performance for your delectation. Curated by Professor Vanessa Toumlin at The University of Sheffield, it also offers a food, drink, craft and entertainment area in conjunction with Yellow Bus Events.
In a festival where there are class artists around every corner, it seems unfair to single one out, but we’d be failing in our duty if we didn’t suggest that you get yourselves along to Leopold Square to see Universal Tree. This Sheffieldbased act play a winning blend of neo-psychedelic classic Blaxploitation genres. Think the best of soul and funk fired through with infectious grooves and stellar vox. With Grammy-nominated members responsible for multiple worldwide hits collectively, this is a set not to miss.
As Tramlines celebrates its 10th year, one of the festival’s finest fringe parties is back with a bang. Delve Deeper will be taking over Bloo 88 all day Saturday once again, inside and outside, and this year they’re bringing highly-rated Dutch soul, jazz and disco infused house DJ Cleanfield over to headline their enormous free party. Supporting Cleanfield on the terrace will be Delve Deeper regulars Jenny Fu, Liam Connolly, Dave Platts, Duncan Allott and Jamie Williamson.
Self Esteem (aka Rebecca Taylor)
Bolstering its reputation as one of Sheff's hippest hangouts, a superb line-up at Picture House Social will see Rebecca Taylor performing live. One half of the Sheff’s coolest ramshackle indie-pop band Slow Club, now the creative force behind Self Esteem and the awesome debut ‘Your Wife’ – a slice of synth-pop magic so good it pretty much buried the opposition in the field. As a way to kick off your Saturday, frankly, it’s pretty darned good.

30 Stax Following up their traditional Saturday night slot, 30 Stax will be delivering their customarily eclectic mix of psychedelic soul, instrumental jazz-fusion, afro-beat, funk, rock, post-disco grooves to weaponise the dancefloor. Expect some classic hip-hop and R&B by way of light relief too. The Cremorne // Saturday // 20:00

The Americas
A rock covers band influenced by 70s and early 80s rock. The 88s sound is soulful and accessible – expect muscular vocals, bluesy riffs and all your classic rock favourites.
Making the perilous journey across the Snake through the badlands of Glossop, this Stockport-based hardcore band will be tearing it up with an entertaining blend of alternative hardcore and post-hardcore.
Championed by BBC Introducing as a band "that makes you feel life is good", and specialising in that thin, wild mercury sound this West Midlands-based trio will be hitting Tramlines in support of their rather good ‘Guitar Music is Dead’ EP.

For those with any anger issues which might need processing, and also those with a love of getting sweaty and shouty, this Guildford four-piece will be unleashing a set of sweat-drenched spiky punk rock for audiences who like to pogo.
If you're craving some classic blues, brothers Cameron and Brendan Hoare, ably assisted by Remi, Cundy, and Ash will be delivering all things twelve-bar in the best possible way.

The former vocal foil to John Squire’s (The Stone Roses) generation-defining guitar in 90s Brit-poppers The Sea Horses. Chris Helme returns as a solo artist bursting with tuneful, well-constructed melodic songs to share.
Tuneful racket built on the great vocals, hypnotic guitar hooks and driving rhythms reminiscent of the great Manchester bands of the 90s. Already highly-rated, they’re bringing the magic to The Fringe at Tramlines.

This Sheffield indie rock ‘n’ roll band wants to make you feel alive. Big Choruses and head bopping riffs make for an engaging sound – their energetic live show provides an ideal to Friday evening’s festivities.
Self-described as four middle-aged men desperately fighting off midlife crises in a search for lost youth, the mighty FoB are reforming after two-year hiatus. They’ll be delivering the Steel City-flavoured punk showcased on the recent ‘Pain’ EP.

A Leeds-based electronic funk trio, the Galaxians will be kicking out the jams for those with itchy feet and an eye for the dancefloor.
Managing the neat trick of referencing the primarily American genres of alternative metal and grunge whilst being from South Yorkshire, Hands Off Gretel serve up their neat blend of powerful vocals welded to catchy crunchy tunes.

A fuzz-fuelled four-piece hailing from York and characterised by all of the true elements that made rock n’ roll important: a surging, pounding drum attack, crunching riffs and a swaggering, soulful heart.

The Hempolics If you love a bit of organic lo-fi reggae (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), then the Hempolics roots soul via London Town are for you. Sheffield’s favourite rambunctious rock ‘n’ roll duo Hot Soles are back with the promise of fresh tunes and the usual stellar live shows Nah then. It’s been a tad quiet on the Hot Soles front over the last year or two – but now you’re back with a bang! Yup. We’ve got enough songs recorded for an album now, and we’re just gauging when it’s best to release tracks – it’s all killer, no filler, and we want our music to display exactly where we stand right now For those who haven’t yet had the pleasure, could you neatly summarise the Hot Soles shtick? Let’s go with Motown garage. It’s not a matter of being perfect; we’re balls-tothe-wall and it’s more about capturing a moment in time for us. We want the record to sound like our live shows, not the other way around. You could say it’s all about the soul – or the sole – and not the sound. What do you make of Tramlines this year, the move and that? It’s fine because you can now go to Tramlines almost anywhere in the city. It’s amazing for the fringe events, too, and that side of things just seems to get bigger and bigger. We can’t wait – it’s the best way to pick up new fans. Picture House Social // Sunday // 21:45

p Gifted rapper-poet Otis Mensah is, frankly, smashing it so far this year. So far in 2018 he’s released a number of fresh singles to critical acclaim, supported Wu Tang royalty Killah Priest, and will be bringing his heartfelt flows to the Great Gatsby for the Fringe at Tramlines.
Do you always prefer playing to a hometown audience? Yeah, it’s definitely always a blessing to play to people in your hometown. Sheffield’s got so much talent, and there are different pockets of creativity and art forms to take in so it’s nice to be in that environment. As a Sheffield-born artist, I am hoping to do more out of the city and kind of span out if possible; I'd like to try to do more in Manchester, Leeds and London. But yeah, Sheffield is always a blessing. Who would you say are your main inspirations in the music world? I’d say people who are more a little bit to the left and quite vulnerable lyrically, so people like Atmosphere, P.O.S, Open Mike Eagle, Milo, Busdriver. Did the poetry writing come first for you and did it then blend in to rapping? I think my love for hip-hop was always the initial influence for me culturally. It just started off with me imitating the people who I look up to, beginning from the love of music, that genre and the culture around it. That’s what Universal Tree is all about, right? Yeah, we’re bringing people in. We don’t want anyone to ever feel like we’re simply playing to them, as they’re all just as much a part of it as we are. That’s the whole idea behind the name: a Universal Tree for everyone to come and gather under.” What are the main musical influences behind the group? Think of it as similar to Sly and the Family Stone, but if they came out now. There’s the tradition, but we’re also very current. The live experience is a massive part of what you guys offer. Why should people come and see you in Leopold Square on Saturday 21st? Going to a gig and watching four lads playing indie tunes and starting at their feet is fine, if that’s what you like, but we think it’s time to offer a bit more than that. We started off as a studio-based band and got the album sorted, but it was always going to be a live band. We want as many people to see us live, to experience what we can offer. Naomi Mann catches up with Rebecca Taylor to hear about the Slow Club singer’s fresh change of musical tack with a new solo project. What’s the story behind Self Esteem? I’ve had the name since about 2010, for if I ever went and did anything solo. Obviously, it means what it means but it’s also a cool band name. My other idea was Sex Appeal, but I thought Self Esteem was better suited! When I was in Slow Club, I didn’t feel confident enough to go solo and didn’t think I could do it. But over the years I started to get loads of things building up that I wanted to do but couldn’t do in Slow Club, so a couple of years ago I played some songs to people who I really respected musically and they were like, “You’ve got to do it!”. So it’s about giving yourself a bit of freedom musically? Yeah, it’s quite interesting because Charles and I had always had a grouped relationship on what we were working on, yet there was so much frustration on my part and I thought, ‘What if everything I couldn’t do was given a space to do it in?’. It can happen in any creative field, and a bit of me didn’t really care if it was successful or not; I just had to get it out there. I’m glad I’ve done it – it makes me feel very happy and liberated. I’ve just made the album, which sounds quite different to the single I’ve put out, but I always describe it as Kate Bush meets Destiny’s Child meets Sister Act 2 meets Kanye West. Rebecca has curated a line-up of acts for Self Esteem Presents taking place on Friday 20 July as part of Picture House Social’s Neighbourhood Fringe Event. Self Esteem will be performing at 10.30pm.
Was it always going to be a solo project, or did you toy with the idea of another band? Yeah, I think it did matter that I was on my own. I loved being in a band but I desperately wanted a sense of identity because I’m quite different to Charles. Slow Club was this kind of indie folk world which I could play the part of, but it’s not actually me. It might backfire massively but just being able to be myself – I’m 31, there’s not much time left! – is important to me, and hopefully people will like it too. So is the project more of a temporary thing or do you see it growing into something greater? Do you think you’ll go back to Slow Club? Yeah, I think when we both feel like it we’ll go back to it. I love making and playing music with Charles, and he’s also done a solo thing and feels a similar way – that it’s nice to not have to please me for a while! I think we will do something else and I’m hoping Self Esteem will do well as I’m really ambitious and want to be as big as I can be, play to as many people as possible, make the live performance more of a show and experience rather than just a gig. I’ve got loads of plans that I want to pursue but it depends on how things go. I want to do more exhibition stuff, and I’d like to do projects for people who need to know that it’s okay to be whoever you are. I think the overriding feeling of this is that I’ve spent my whole life feeling sorry for being what I’m like. The minute you start to stop apologising for being yourself it creates a nice place to be in, especially for women. Is that the main message – to be yourself? Yeah, I’m actually in the process of writing a manifesto that I’ll stick to. I’ve not actually done it yet but it’s constantly circulating my mind. By my age, if you’re not married and having children you’re perceived as “not succeeding”, and I’m obsessed with calling that as bullshit! Your journey is yours and it still baffles me that I should wonder what people think of me and when I’ll settle down. I think we’re still so obsessed with it as society, so I guess that’s the message – but, still, doing all those things is fine of course! It’s not ground-breaking stuff, really. I feel like the movement at the moment is generally towards selfacceptance and feminism, but even in my friendship groups some desperately want to meet a man and settle down and it just blows my mind. It’s good to be able to say, “What if you don’t do that, babe? You’ve got your whole life ahead of you!”

Not only does this place serve some of the best pizzas and cocktails in Sheffield, but Bloo 88 is a classy, beautifully designed bar with a central location making it a perfect spot for the festival weekend. On Saturday, Jenny Fu and Liam Connolly will be presenting the awesome Cleanfield DJ sets as part of this year’s Delve Deeper Festival Fringe event. Bungalows and Bears
A staple of the Fringe at Tramlines scene, and perfectly located on the heart of Division Street, Bungalows is a must-visit venue. The vibe is always perfect, the acts are always top notch and the drinks will be flowing. Highlights this year are Moomin (Friday 00:30), Life Aquatic Band (Saturday 18:30) and Sourdough (Sunday 23:00). Look Out For: Nova Twins // Sunday // 21:30
CADS
A stalwart of the festival sees the Blues & Ale Stage return to CADS over the festival weekend. It kicks off on the Friday with Highway Child and James Taplin and Mick Holmes before returning on the Saturday with a full programme from 1pm through until chucking out time. It’s hard to pick standouts, but Black Thunder Revue and The Gansu Rhythm and Blues Revue will almost certainly complement the real ale, ciders, and food that’ll also be served up. CAFE TOTEM
Formerly The Rocking Chair, Cafe Totem on Furnival Gate is home to a regular array of live music, so it goes without saying that the venue is pulling out all the stops for the Fringe at Tramlines. Commonside Street Party
A collaborative effort between Closed Shop and Hallamshire House, as well as Martin Bedford and his Honey Bees Blues Club, this event boasts an old-school street party vibe for those who aren’t heading elsewhere in the city. This cracking little pub already has a great reputation in Sheffield for its live music programmes as well as its range of guest beers alongside the local favourites. Being just a short stroll from the city centre on London Road, it's perfectly situated for festival shenanigans. A nice, open-plan feel means the lower level area (where the bands usually play) leads out into the courtyard. Its regulars love it – and with good reason. Crystal
Crystal is always buzzing during festival weekend, with some of the UK's most in-demand touring bands regularly gracing the stage. Once again the lineup here is arguably the strongest programme of live music with a great vibe. Highlights this year include Hands Off Gretel, Alvarez Kings and Liberty Ship. The Devonshire
A converted Georgian townhouse in the heart of Sheffield’s city centre, The Devonshire offers something a little different – a venue that’ll suit your mood from morning until night. It’s the kind of place that works whether you’re waking up with your first coffee of the morning or imbibing your nightly pint. Quiet drink? The range of gins and spirits is second to none. Feel like tying one down? They have bands on from midday until 10pm throughout Saturday and Sunday. A great balance of elegant and cool. Look Out For: Femur // Saturday // 19:00

The Frog and Parrot
Regulars will know that the Frog and Parrot is known throughout Sheffield for its guest DJs and live band sets. The location is perfect – smack bang in the middle of the Devonshire Quarter, and its guaranteed to be one of busiest pub venues when it comes to music. Gin Bar at Vintedge
Should you find yourself wandering down Abbeydale Road on festival weekend, then pop in to whet your whistle at Gin Bar at Vintedge. The gin is, as the name suggests, top-notch, and is more than matched by the beers on offer, the warm, relaxing atmosphere, and the friendly and welcoming staff. The Great Gatsby
Any venue that references a text famous for its style and panache has to go to the top of the must-visit list, frankly. Luckily, it’s a venue that can back up the name. It’s well-regarded for its live programme and can shift easily from being a place to chill out in and catch the vibe to being the place where the festival party starts. The Green Room
After a recent refurb and ideally located right next to The Fringe Stage at Devonshire Green, The Green Room is likely to be one of the most popular fringe hangouts. Its weekend line up is as strong as usual with music and DJ sets running right through from Friday evening until Sunday evening, and if your hangover sets in, the breakfasts are legendary. The Horse and Jockey
A friendly, traditional-style pub with links to Stancill Brewery means that a full range of excellent beers are on tap and always well-maintained. Leopold Square
Leopold Square is a must-visit hub over Tramlines weekend, especially if you like your vibes laid back and accompanied by a glass of prosecco. This classic Sheffield venue and festival hotspot always has a great atmosphere, fuelled by its range of 2-for-1 cocktails and reputation for great live music that tends to focus on the best of local talent. The Peace Gardens
The Peace Gardens has long been a key hub of the festival, especially for a family-friendly vibe, and this year is no exception with a big screen linking up events across the city as well as featuring outdoor screenings of music-based films. There’s also street theatre at Barker’s Pool all weekend which involves roaming circus performers, busking stages, and a parkour bouldering trail for those who fancy getting aerial. Picture House Social
Picture House Social has a cool, inclusive vibe; the food is classic Italian street style, there’s a games room for those who want something a little different and the terrace is a perfect place to chill when the sun is shining. Recent winners of the Best Live Music Venue at the Exposed Awards, its got a great pedigree for the live acts it puts on throughout the year, and it has snagged some gems for the festival weekend. Record Junkee
One of Sheffield’s most versatile establishments, Record Junkee is part record shop, part ticket outlet and part live music venue. At this year’s Fringe at Tramlines it has a pretty stacked calendar, kicking off at 6pm on Friday evening with acoustic vibes from Rachel Webster and running all day Saturday and Sunday, rounding off with indie-punk licks from Youth Killed It. The Red Deer
Few places in the city centre are as perfect for a Tramlines oasis as The Red Deer. Tucked away just behind West Street, on Pitt Street, it serves great beer, fab vegetarian and vegan food and is just plain comfy. Its line up this weekend runs throughout Saturday and Sunday and features the likes of Emily Harris, Gipsy Bears and Treebeard. Look Out For: Treebeard // Sunday // 21:00

The Royal Standard
Handily placed near the train station, The Royal Standard has become a staple of the fringe scene at Tramlines. A regular splattering of live music throughout the year means the acts over Tramlines weekend are always top notch, complimented by a decent range of real ales, ciders and bar snacks. Highlights this year include Friday night headliners Spreading The Disease and Sour Tusk – a local blues duo who kick off proceedings on Sunday at midday. Shakespeares
Since its relaunch in 2011, this CAMRA award-winning pub has gone from strength-to-strength thanks to the excellent stewardship of William Wagstaff, enthusiastic regulars, and a reputation for its live music. Local talent regularly features in the Bard’s Bar, while downstairs has become known for its folk music in a city fast becoming known as the UK’s folkie hub. Sheffield City Hall
Alternative music returns to Sheffield City Hall’s stunning art deco Ballroom, led by headliners Agent Fresco who bring their heady brew of alt-pop, metal and math-rock to us all the way from Iceland. The Washington
A classic Tramlines venue with a prime location, The Washington is always good value over the course of the weekend. Not only can you soak up the buzzing atmosphere from the events on the Green, but the place has a fantastic live music pedigree and always puts on a fantastic mix of great live acts and DJ sets. Yellow Arch
Once an Edwardian nuts and bolts factory for the bridge and shipping industry, Yellow Arch made its name for being one of Sheffield’s most iconic recording studios, producing albums for acts as diverse as Richard Hawley, Kylie Minogue and Jarvis Cocker. These days, it’s also a full time licensed venue and has become synonymous with some of the best parties in the city, and this year’s Fringe at Tramlines is no exception. Expect two late night parties with a tonne of outstanding bands and live acts from across the UK, as well as top drawer DJs, MCs and sound systems.
