TIFFANY

“GLAMOROUS LISTENING PARTY” Tiffany Greens’ Glamorous Listening Party goal was to have an intimate setting with 30 close relatives and friends at the Preston Hotel’s Pink Lounge Room on March 16, 2009. But once the word got around they decided to expand their audience to approximately 80 guests that also included music labels, artists and producers.

SEM: “Once again, it is always a pleasure to interview you Mrs. Tiffany. Thank you for performing in January at the “Fire Red Glitz and Glam” ExpoStyles Magazine Release Party. Those in attendance really enjoyed your musical style and performance that night. So Tiffany, tell me about your Listening Party.” Tiffany: “The Listening Party was such a great experience and major accomplishment for me as well as all the people who have supported me throughout the completion of the CD project. Normally you don’t perform at listening parties, but I wanted to allow my guests to experience Tiffany Green’s music and fashion style.” SEM: “What songs did you sing from your new album?” Tiffany: “I chose three soundtracks titled “I Can’t Wait,” which was distributed as a single in 2008; “Glamorous,” which is the title of the album; and “My Everything.”

Tiffany’s Beauty Quote: “I don’t identify beauty by one’s outer appearance. I see beauty in all of God’s creation.” SEM: “Can you tell us a little about yourself?” Tiffany: “Well, I am a child of God – a church girl. I grew up in the church because my parents are pastors. I am a writer of music, and I am a worshipper. I love to worship and be in the presence of the Lord. I wear many hats like most of us do. I’m a loving wife, a proud mother of six children, a daughter and a friend. SEM: “Wow Tiffany, you look great to have six children! How do you keep your hair and skin glowing and youthful?” Tiffany: “I have a very good diet that I follow based on organic and natural food products. I started eating this way five years ago and introduced it to my family three years ago. I believe that a good diet and plenty of rest helps with the overall health of my hair, nails, skin and with maintaining my weight. It has also been a great way to detoxify my body. SEM: “What made you change your diet to organic and natural products?” Tiffany: “I was working as a personal assistant to Neo-Soul Artist, Lisa McClendon, when she introduced it to me. At that time I was experiencing sore throats and frequent headaches. However, once I started eating organic products, I noticed a positive difference in my condition. Soon I began to both enjoy and love eating this way and started encouraging others to incorporate some basic dairy products into their diet for a healthier lifestyle.” SEM: “Okay, let’s talk about your hair. Who is your stylist and what products do you use?” Tiffany: “Oh that’s the jazzy part,” she laughs. “I may visit my stylist, Tonya, at Expressions Unlimited Salon in Nashville once a month. I maintain my hair by regularly shampoo and conditioning it. The products my stylist uses during my visits is the Mizani product line and protein treatments.”

“Tiffany is living her life as an example with mothering six children, a healthy lifestyle with a diet of organic and natural food products and managing a career. That alone has encouraged me to do more by continuing with what God has called me to do.”

SEM: “Thank you Lisa for taking out the time to talk with us today.” Lisa: “No problem. Thank you!” SEM: “Describe yourself in three words.” Lisa: “Compassionate, sincere and honest.” SEM: “Tell me about your new album Reality.” Lisa: “Reality is an album that signifies my being on a mountain top of my life right now. For so long I felt as if I was trapped in someone else’s body –allowed to let some things out, but not everything. I personally wanted to bless people lives. So for me this album is freedom and truth that challenges you to love. It’s all I wanted it to be.” SEM: “Where are you from?” Lisa: “A little town in Palatka, Florida; and the more I travel, the more I love the country.” SEM: “How long have you been singing?” Lisa: “I would sing in front of the TV at the age of 8 with my siblings yelling for me to stop so they could hear the TV,” Lisa laughs. “Mom was torn between me singing and the others wanting to hear the TV, but out of respect for my siblings she had to tell me to stop. But I couldn’t control it – I just loved to sing.

Both of my parents played instruments, so music has just been a part of me. I started singing professionally at the age of 19 and recorded my first album at age 25.” SEM: “How long have you been producing your own music?” Lisa: “I started producing with my second album Soul Music to ensure the album reflected me and that I could tell my testimony in a way that only I could do. In the end I have a lot of ideas and input.” SEM: “How do you balance your music career and family?” Lisa: “Practically. We follow a schedule which includes precious time with our children, so at the end of the day we won’t be successful and have missed out on our children’s lives. It’s just like a budget, if you don’t make a financial plan something will get neglected. And that’s how we balance – with a plan where our family is our first ministry.” SEM: “What are your words of encouragement for someone who wants a career in music?” Lisa: “Be true to yourself. Don’t sell out. If you are called to be a Sunday morning worship singer, do that. Don’t jump on the band wagon for something else, sells or money because you won’t be happy.

Don’t be afraid to be different even if it means being a Neo- Soul or Inspirational Artist. Be who you are – be a trailblazer. Make sure you know the business, have the right team with all your legal business in place. Have integrity and always represent Christ.” MSE: “So Lisa how long have you been wearing your natural hairstyle?” Lisa: “I was natural in 1997 and went back in 2007. It really was a spiritual thing for me. A lot of us hide behind our hair, clothes and whatever else, and I could not hide any more. I didn’t realize I was afraid to face myself, but the Lord was pulling on me and it started with my hair. Now I’m not telling anyone to cut their hair – that was for me. He taught me I was more than my hair. Now I know who I am and I embrace me.” MSE: “What products do you use on your natural hair?” Lisa: “I love Out of Eden Body Works, an all natural product started by a sixteen year old, and Loc ‘n’ Twist. I also find great articles on YouTube. Just type in natural hair tutorials and you will find styles, beauty tips and more.”

Owner: Kenya

Owner:Shelley Stylist: Brandy

Kenya Carter, a Cosmetologist since 1999, has taken the steps necessary to build a successful Salon with her sister, Shelley. Redz Salon is a full-service salon with a laid back family atmosphere consisting of four stylists and one nail technician. The styles at Redz Salon literally vary from stylist to stylist, but her personal style is on the edgy more colorful side. She does a lot of natural styles, cuts and colors.

Natural transition Style Tips by Kenya: It all starts with your lifestyle I recommend texturizing new growth with Sentonics in order to leave some of the wave pattern in the hair to make the transition smoother when going all natural. I take a conservative approach when relaxing hair because I feel hair with some texture better enables it to have both body and bounce. It is best to keep natural hair straight by pressing so the tension from combing will not break the hair at the stress point. Make sure to keep from becoming wet as it will convert back to its natural state. & Shelley Chris Kyger Photography, Make-up: Gwen Pettie

Let’s take a hair care quiz: Does your hair look and feel like you want it to? Do you ever wish you had a different grade of hair? Are you doing all that is necessary in order to obtain a desired head of healthy hair? Whatever your answers, please know help is within reach – you can achieve optimal hair care. First, we must admit to our natural tendency to follow certain expected trends when it concerns our hair. The latest trend should be limited to being the driving force of the fashion industry rather than the definition for the status of one’s hair. While you may be able to do an outfit within a designated range of sizes, the same does not hold true for hair care – one size does not fit all and one brand does not work best for every person despite a myriad of marketing claims to the contrary. Your stylist’s highest priority should be to shop for and utilize products that your hair will “wear” well. If, however, you have no other choice but to ransack store shelves, I want to give you some practical tidbits of hair care knowledge to ensure your hair is not only healthy, but is also beautiful. While your hair should always look and feel its best, there are factors that can and often do leave us with less than positive results. So, if your answer to the first question is “No”, allow me to identify some possible causes as well as propose a few suggestions to remedy your dilemma: Dull hair can lead to limp and lifeless hair, which basically means your hair has lost its elasticity, flexibility and has little or no strength. In most cases dull hair is the result of a build up of shampoos, conditioners and even particles deposited from hard water. These build ups deprive your hair of the desired bounce and sheen for which you purchased the product in the first place. Instead, try a shampoo specially designed to remove build up or you can use equal parts of plain apple cider vinegar and water to restore the acid mantle essential to a healthy scalp and clean, shiny hair. (To use: Shampoo with the apple cider solution allowing enough time to massage well into your scalp. Thoroughly rinse your hair then condition. Repeat process every two weeks.) The loss of elasticity, flexibility and strength can be corrected, and in some cases prevented altogether. If your hair appears limp or flat shortly after it is cleansed, make sure you are utilizing the proper tools (i.e. detangling combs, etc.) and use styling products in moderation. If you use a commercial conditioner that contains a fabric softener such as stear alkonium chloride or some other quaternary ammonium compound, this, too, will cause your tresses to lay flat destroying your hair’s natural body. Instead, choose a shampoo with a PH of 4.5 to 5.5 that contains protein to re-infuse strength. If you answered “Yes” to the second question, let me first apologize to you for any and everyone who has ever lied to you claiming it is possible to change the grade of your hair (LOL!). What God gave you by way of genetic heredity at birth is what you will ultimately be laid to rest with. However, with proper care and treatment your texture can be temporarily changed via conditioning treatments, relaxers, heated styling tools, etc. Be sure to consult your Stylist!! Finally, if you are not doing all you need to do in order to obtain a desired head of healthy hair chances are you already know what to do to correct the situation. In short, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which includes a proper diet and nutrition, is critical to Aisha Gant: Salon Owner beautiful hair. Even if you have poor eating habits if you will use hair nutrients and follow some general guidelines, you can keep your hair in great condition. Excellent of Completions Salon hair care is a goal you can achieve if you will look at hair care Life’s Way… Tulsa, OK, Author of “Chaya’s First Death ” Submitted by A. Life

A self-employed business owner or individual must take the proper steps to put aside funds for retirement. The good news about saving for retirement is you call the shots – the bad news, you call the shots.

Another factor to consider when preparing for your retirement is securing an adequate plan for risk management or the things that can hinder your retirement plan.

Additional services offered through Storehouse Financial Group address other concerns when planning for retirement such as final expense coverage, which ensures that your final expenses are not left to burden your family.

What if you were to: “When you're self-employed you have more choices about when you retire as well as how you will save for retirement," says Victor Griffin, President of Storehouse Financial Group in Tulsa, OK. There is no mandatory retirement age unless you set one. And rather than using the 401(k) plan selected by an employer, you can choose your own retirement savings vehicle. While such flexibility is nice, it also carries some responsibility because you must be sure to set money aside for your retirement plan. .

Shei Atkins’ new album, “Letting Go” released in 2009 is an exhortation to free yourself from everything that prevents you from reaching your full potential spiritually, mentally or physically. It is a declaration that it is time to experience joy, peace and happiness in your own personal life. Visit: myspace.com/sheiatkins

SEM:

“What inspired the

title of the new album?” Shei: “I was discouraged at the end of 2008 and wanted to give up as a music artist. I know we all have had these moments when things aren’t moving as fast as we want them to. But I discovered it is during that time of waiting that God can and will put your motives in check and have you re-evaluate your purpose in life by asking yourself “Why am I really doing this?” Once, I could answer that, I do it because God told me to and it’s not about money then I knew I was ready.” SEM: “Shei, tell me about the tour you went on with Kelly Rowland.” Shei: “In 2008, I had the opportunity to do some background singing in Germany for Kelley and because it happened during the time of my discouragement,

God gave me that experience as a special gift to give me strength to pursue – to let me know He had not forgotten about me. I had time to seek God as well as glean some pivotal things from the tour. I began to let go of past hurts, disappointments and literally everything that was holding me back from my full potential. That’s when the title of the album came.” SEM: “How long have you been doing music? Shei: “My first album, “Life in Stereo” was released in 2004; “The Lita Mae Show” came forth in 2006; “Girl Talk” in 2007 and here we are in 2009. I would like to thank my husband, Drathroven, for helping to pull out the gifts that God placed inside of me. I don’t know anyone else who could do that because I grew up in the hood, I had a tendency to be content with where I am – he pushed me further.”

SEM: What else is Shei Atkins up to?” Shei: “The other great thing that came out of letting go is, I am now a fitness trainer. I have a lot of clients who come to me . We are planning a trip to the beach to create a family unit .This is a time for fun and encouragement from each other when wanting to give up. We all help to keep each other on track.

Shei Atkins’ Fitness Tips: 1. Don’t let your eyes be BIGGER than your stomach. 2. Replace all whites with whole grains. Try to stay away from fast foods as well as processed foods. 3. Workout at least three times a week for 30 minutes to an hour. 4. Eat how much you want to weigh.

So, Stylistix is me all wrapped up in a Retro/Modern/Eclectic Style.” SEM: “What products does Stylistix use?” Tanisa: “Because each client’s needs are different, we use a variety of products including Sentonics, Affirm, Essesions, Design Essencials and Nyrobie. “Stylistix is a place where you don’t mind spending time.” Tanisa has created a place for clients and others to come and relax with the smooth sounds of jazz, the pleasant fragrance of candle scents all highlighted with tasteful conversation and stylists that have a positive interaction with each other.

It may take a minute or a longer time than what you expected, but with God’s help and a business plan your dreams will come to pass.”

Tamiya Lewis has been electrifying the stage with dramatic and vocal performance as a public speaker and spoken word artist. Tamiya’s love for the arts began at an early age when she won a series of essay contests. From there Tamiya continued to develop her craft by joining the debate team and later Langston University Band and Choir. Tamiya is scheduled to release her debut CD in 2009 entitled “An Introduction to The Kingdom.” A rap/spoken word project dedicated to confronting social and cultural issues.

“The vision of Aisha Gant “ A Display of Vocal Art” was held April 18, 2009 at Tulsa Tech Auditorium. Aisha brought together local talent in the areas of poetry, musicians and book authors. Every performer had their own unique style and presence of Art. ExpoStyles Hair Magazine, teamed up with Aisha Gant and presented two photo shoot give-a-ways to two music artist talents that you see featured to the right. The winner of the book feature was presented to Java Collins. The final winner for her dramatic spoken word display was our feature below Tamiya Lewis. On behave of Aisha and ExpoStyles, thank you to all of the performers and supporters.

Health

“Breast Cancer in Women” According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, over 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year at an alarming rate of one person every three minutes with one individual dying every fourteen minutes. It presents itself in a variety of ways and has different cell populations within the tumor itself. While breast cancer tends to be more aggressive in younger women, African Americans are fifty percent more apt to die before the ages of 35 – 50 and are twice as likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage when the cancer has spread and is more difficult to cure. The exact cause of breast cancer is unknown, but research proves women with the following risk factors have a greater chance of developing the disease:

Symptoms

Risk Factors: Elderly – half of all women diagnosed are over age sixty-five Diets high in saturated fat Older age at birth of first child or barren A personal history of breast cancer or benign breast disease A family history, particularly a mother or sister Treatment with radiation therapy to the breast/chest Breast tissue that is dense on a mammogram Estrogen or progesterone hormone treatment Obesity Moderate alcoholic intake – more than two drinks per day Gene changes

There are no symptomatic pains with early breast cancer. If pain persists in the breast see your physician immediately. However, common symptoms of mid to late breast cancer include:

“It is imperative that women be vigilant about their health care and perform self-breast exams at least once a month preferably after the menstrual period ends. If you have stopped your menses, perform the exam on the same day of each month.”

A change in how the breast or nipple feels – you may experience nipple tenderness or notice a lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area. A change in how the breast or nipple looks – this could mean a change in the size or shape of the breast or a nipple that is turned slightly inward. The skin of the breast, areola or nipple may appear scaly, red or swollen or may have ridges or pitting that resembles the skin of an orange. Discharge of fluid from the nipple.

Self-Breast Exam In the mirror with your arms relaxed by your sides, examine your breast for any changes in size, shape texture or skin. Look for skin puckering, dimpling, scales, sores or discoloration. Inspect your nipples for any sores, peeling or change in the direction of the nipple (inverting of the nipple). Next, place your hands on your hips and press down firmly to tighten the chest muscles beneath your breast. Turn from side to side and inspect the outer part of your breasts. Repeat this inspection with your arms raised overhead. Bend forward toward the mirror while rolling your shoulders towards each other and look for any changes in the shape or contour of your breast. Check your nipples for discharge of fluid. Place your thumb and forefinger on the tissue surrounding the nipple and pull outward toward the end of the nipple. Repeat on your other breast. The National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society recommend a baseline mammogram starting at age 40; a mammogram every one to two years for women 40 – 49, depending on previous findings; and a mammogram every year from women 50 and older. A personal calendar should be kept to record your self-exams, mammograms and doctor appointments. To decrease the risk of cancer a low-fat diet, regular exercise and no smoking or drinking is recommended. Stay healthy and live longer!

“Want to look perfect on your wedding day?” “Here are five easy tips for wedding day beauty” 1. Six months before the wedding, have a major consultation with your hair stylist and make-up artist of choice. Bring along the headpiece and a picture of the dress if possible. The more the stylist knows about the aura of the wedding, the better he or she can create the perfect hairstyle and make-up application. 2. Consider the time of day and type of wedding when choosing a style. Loose styles are appropriate for informal or daytime weddings, while updos portray a formal, evening look.

3. Do not have any chemical treatments the day of the wedding – that is not the time for surprises! 4. Hair color looks its best during its first two weeks, so have hair colored a week to two weeks before the wedding. 5. Believe it or not, the wedding gown can also dictate the texture of the finished hair design. A smooth, shiny updo of curls or glossy stick straight hair complements a smooth satin gown. Whereas a gown comprised of sweeping tulle is beautifully accented by soft flowing curls.

“IT’S ALREADY DETERMINED” Pastor Pamela Wiley In life we all have experienced tragedies that seemed insurmountable – failed marriages, unhealthy relationships, wrong career choices, unplanned pregnancies, domestic abuse, betrayal and death of loved ones, and many of these have been beyond our control. We have silently wished for an opportunity to start over again. We’ve said in sincerity, “If I had a second chance, I would do it all so differently.” I want you to know that your life’s experiences do not define who you are. I had a friend who once told me that your shame is not your name, and I agree. You are not the sum total of what you have done or what you have been through. You are who God says you are. Psalms 139:14 says, “I will praise Thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Thy works, and that my soul knoweth right well.” You are uniquely, fearfully, wonderfully, beautifully and INTENTIONALLY made. God created you to be who you are. Everything about you – your looks, personality, ethnicity, shape, size, smile and even the inflection of your voice reflects that God made YOU.

Switch! Is a program designed to teach, engage, and entertain boys and girls in our community 8 to 13 years old. The focus is giving kids the tools they need to succeed in life at an early impressionable age. Kids learn practical life skills, healthy living, creative self expression, and they have a fun safe place to play and unwind at the YMCA.

Tulsa Oklahoma Cares about our youth!

Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which He ordained that we should walk in them.” And Psalms 37:23 says, “The steps of a good (or righteous) man (or woman) are ordered by the Lord; and he delighted in His way.” God is a God of order. As such, everything that God did and everything that God does has a plan and purpose to it. From the creation until now there is an order, a process, a sequence or a system that God follows. Order means to regulate, systematize, arrange and command. God wants to regulate, systematize, arrange and command your progression through life with precision in a predetermined way. And since God predetermined that our life and purpose is to have a glorious end, what we experience during the course of life does not determine our outcome nor our ending so long as we follow His plan. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Expected is defined as foreseeable, predictable, to wait for an anticipated thing, to receive something because of a perceived right to it or because it is due or appropriate. The Bible says the plans and purposes God intends for us to experience shall prevail or stand, and it (the plan) is good. I want you to understand, your ending has ALREADY BEEN DETERMINED.

It does not matter what our past has been. The end is better than the beginning. So hold your head up high and look towards your future with Great Expectations because it’s “ALREADY BEEN DETERMINED”.
