Your Guide to hiring a Professional Photographer
owen imaging at exposure
When you hire a photographer you want the best. With such a large community of both professionals and photography enthusiasts it can be hard to know what to look for and what questions to ask. Why does hiring a professional matter? Photography lives on long after the event is over or your children have grown. So whether its capturing your wedding day, the way your 4 year old daughter always smiled from the bottom of her feet to tip the very tips of her fingers or documenting the growth and success of your business, hiring a photographer who has both the artistic and technical knowledge to do the job properly matters. A photography enthusiast can take great images. A professional however can duplicate great results every time because the pro always knows what she is doing and why she is doing it. Owen Imaging
It is as difficult to properly expose an image in bright light as it is in low light. The photographer is able to use her manual settings to ensure the white dress is properly exposed while not losing any details in the landscape and sky
This guide has been designed, with the guidance of the Professional Photographers of America, to help you find the best photographer to fit your needs.
An experienced photographer ensures your shoot runs smoothly. During an event such as a wedding a professional can anticipate where to be and easily adjust to the unexpected. She will know what to capture and provide valuable advice on your timetable and recommend family and group shots. An experienced photographer is able to pre plan shots and direct guests during photos so that you stay on schedule and enjoy your day. There are no re-dos in wedding or event photography. Your photographer must be able to anticipate moments over and over in uncontrolled lighting situations. She needs to know her gear inside and out so that she can be alert and able to react when a great moment happens.

Capturing great candid moments is about the photographer knowing their gear inside and out so that their attention is on you and not on the camera
Your photographer should know the principles of photojournalism, portrait photography, creative posing, composition and how to shoot in all situations: in the dark of the night, sunny beaches, the inside of a church and in all weather. If you come across a beautiful dark space or brilliantly lit open beach during your shoot you will want your photographer to be able to use them.

We all hope for the perfect day when we plan events such as family reunions and weddings but you never truly know what will unfold and its your photographers job to be prepared and able to shoot regardless of the light and circumstance.

Questions to ask your Photographer How would you characterize the style of your photography? Photo-journalistic? Traditional? Whimsical? You don’t want to hire someone and then discover that you don’t like the photographer’s style. Could I see an album, perhaps one that includes all the photos of a shoot? This will allow you to see the progression of a shoot, which is especially important for weddings and other events that involve a storytelling aspect. What’s your backup plan in case you become too ill to photograph that day? It happens. You don’t want to be left trying to plan for another photography session if the photographer can’t make it (especially for events). Ask if they have another photographer who will back them up, etc. Many photographers have close working relationships with others in the industry. Don’t be afraid to ask your photographer if they have those relationships and who with. Do you carry Liability Insurance? Just as a professional in any other business your photographer should carry proper business and liability insurance. Some venues will not allow your photographer to shoot without a Certificate of Insurance. Even if they will, should a guest trip over a piece of the photographer’s equipment, without proper liability insurance you could be financially responsible.
What is your photography background? How long have you been working as a professional photographer? Do you attend classes and seminars to stay up to date? A photographers willingness to continually invest in themselves and their profession demonstrates a commitment to a high level of quality.
Do you offer design/portrait consultations before the actual photo session? Consultations give photographers the chance to get to know your likes/dislikes, to see the rapport between you and your family, and to learn your vision.
Do you use professional quality cameras capable of capturing great images in all lighting conditions, or do you use consumer-level cameras? Do you have backup equipment if something happens to your camera or lights? Do you bring additional lighting equipment if it is needed? A professional will carry at LEAST one complete pro-level backup kit (camera/lenses/flash) in case of equipment failure. You never know what could happen and you do not want your photographer to show up on the day without professional equipment.
Do you work with a second photographer? If so what is your agreement with that photographer and what is that photographers background? Photographers often work with another photographer to ensure that more images are captured from different perspectives. This is a very worthwhile service. When you are paying for this service you want to ensure that the other photographer has been chosen with care. Better yet look for a photographer who works in a consistent team.
Will you sign a contract stating everything we have discussed and agreed upon? It is important that you sign a contract with your photographer that states both parties expectations.

Now that you know what skills to look for in a photographer you want to make sure your photographers personality is a good match for you and your family. Your photographer should make you laugh. He should be someone you naturally feel comfortable with. Your kids shouldn’t want the photographer to leave at the end of the session and you should feel like your photographer was a calming influence on your wedding day.
