2010 Winter Games To Accommodate LGBT’s Gay Whistler—a group that works year-round promoting the Whistler ski resort (where skiing and bobsled

events will be held) to the LGBT community, is doing more than just welcoming gay competitors and fans. It’s opening Pride House, a meeting place in Pan Pacific Whistler Center (located right in the middle of the Olympic hubbub). Pride House will feature a lounge with TV screens. Information about upcoming Gay Games, Outgames and the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association will be available. Athletes, coaches, families and friends who live in gay-intolerant countries can also obtain legal information about seeking refugee status in Canada. The main effort of Pride House will be social. Relieving the pressures of the Olympics (athletic, media, emotional), a place LGBT people and their allies can go to escape.

No Promo Homo Law The Lithuanian Parliament on July 14 overrode a presidential veto of a bill that bans from schools and public places any information that “agitate(s) for homosexual, bisexual and polygamous relations.” The vote was 87-6. The Parliament previously had passed the measure 67-3, with 67 MPs not voting. Seventy-one votes were needed for an override. The new statute is called the “Law on the Protection of Minors Against the Detrimental

Effect of Public Information.” The law specifically states that it is meant to cover movies and websites, so domestic and foreign gay websites might now be banned in Lithuania, along with hundreds of films such as Milk and La Cage aux Folles. The law also bans information that promotes hypnosis, “bad eating,” paranormal phenomena, gambling, lotteries, physical passivity and other things legislators consider “detrimental” to minors’ bodies or thought processes.

Burning up Gay Dance Floors By Patrick Fleming

There are more DJs than ever in 2009— 150,000 and counting if you believe the national DJ registry. It seems these days, any guy or girl with a headset, mixer and an iPod can call him or herself a DJ.

But there is more to being a star DJ than just hitting the play button on a stereo. You need to be a master in track selection, own technical skills, spark creativity, be consistent, and most important: you have to be able to pack a dance floor. The mix masters on this year’s top nine not only meet all the criteria—they excel in it. That’s why they’re ranked above the 149,991 other so-called DJs as the best of the gay dance floor. Here they are in descending order of gay-er–greatness.

DJ Wayne G

eXpression808.com

Wayne G rose to prominence as the original headliner of London’s “Heaven” nightclub, but it’s his seagig aboard Atlantis Cruises that most gay fans know him for. Circuit crowds also hail him for spinning gay super events including Sydney Mardi Gras, Berlin Love Parade, Folsom St Fair, and Fire Island’s Pines Party.

8

A talented producer, Wayne G has remixed for the likes of Cher, Christina Aguilera, and Celine Dion—but don’t call him a commercial DJ. He eschews being categorized in any one particular genre. He weaves house, anthemic vocal tribal, and Latin flavored percussion to create a melodic high energy journey all his own. You can get a taste of it in his latest remix compilation album, Move: Atlantis Dance 2009 (Silver Label), in stores now.

William Umana House music runs in William Umana’s blood. It’s been a part of who he is for over 20 years and after fueling the sets of some of the most esteemed DJs in the dance music scene with blistering original tracks such as “Declaration” and his Star 69 Records release “Tribal Evolution”, Umana jumped into DJ booths throughout the United States in 2009. “I have a very specific approach to the way I create music,” Umana explains. “I concentrate initially on laying down meticulous drum programming. Only after I’ve got the drums perfect will I even attempt to add keyboards or samples. If you don’t have a solid beat, you won’t have a solid track!” He carries the same technique into the DJ booth. “Tribal drums are at the core of my sound,” he continues. “My music also has a bit of a Latin flavor—no doubt due to my heritage and the way my sound grew as I was playing gigs in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico as I honed my DJ skills—but the common denominator is always hot basslines and driving beats. I don’t care who you are or where I’m playing—if you’re on my dance floor, you will be moving!”

Scotty Thompson Scotty refuses to take himself too seriously; and that is the treat that’s endeared him to fans around the world. Sure, guys lust for his bod, but they yearn his for his beats too—and enthusiasts call Scotty a savior from the boring, self-important circuit DJs of yore. “I’m not afraid to take risks,” explains Thompson. He differentiates himself from other DJs both in approach— mixing on the fly, layering tracks on top of one another—and in content: he refuses to constrain himself to strict genre boundaries. He also strives to offer the circuit crowd something different. He plays a diverse array of House, Electro, Vocal and Tribal sounds. “You don’t always have to listen to Beyonce,” laughs Scott. “There are other names in dance music, people.”

Brett Henrichsen “I never saw myself becoming a DJ,” says Brett Henrichsen, whose smarts, talent, good looks and chiseled body took him from working in marketing to masterminding the Masterbeat download site. “As a marketing specialist for IBM, I had access to CD burners in the early ‘90s, way before they were in everyone’s computer. I would make CDs of all my favorite dance tracks.” A friend told him that the mixes were good enough to sell, and Masterbeat was born.

Authentic Italian Dining Homemade Pastas Tuscan Pizzas Fresh Island Ingredients

Being a sought-after DJ has sent Henrichsen around the world, mixing at hotspots in Ibiza, London and Paris—and at every White Party imaginable here in the United States.

”If it weren’t for the gay community,” Henrichsen says, “not only would there be no Masterbeat, [the world would] have little to wear, bad hair, no entertainment…basically no spice to life! Growing up I remember wishing, ‘If only I could change, I would.’ Knowing what I know now, I would never change who or what I am—we are the lucky ones!”

9

Escape While many of today’s top DJs complain of the lull in today’s dance scene— arguing that the crowds are waning and that clubs are not investing enough money in parties—Escape says the gay club land is actually experiencing a resurgence. “The scene is more fun than ever, he says. “All of a sudden, the industry is back to high energy, happy music. The dark, monotonous beats that took over dance floors at the start of 2000 are history.

Alyson Calagna Alyson Calagna admits she doesn’t play by the rules. She spins a wide variety of music from pop to electro, some tribal and even funky house. Her love of beats and her passion for making people feel alive on the dance floor have made Alyson one of the most in-demand DJs on today’s dance floor.

In addition to his DJing gigs, Escape is one of the most sought after remixers on gay dance floors today. His remixes of Kristine W’s “Never and Sarah Altereth’s “It Doesn’t Take Much are among the most popular mixes in clubs right now. But it’s his remixes of Beyonce that are really getting all the single ladies’ hands up.

Last year, Alyson’s career reached an important pinnacle when she headlined Arabian Nights at Disney’s One Mighty Party event. The exposure rocketed her to the top of the DJ pool, landing her even more gigs. In fact, this summer, Calagna will be appearing in twelve US cities—an impressive feat in these tough economic times.

Junior Vasquez They say that legends are made, not born. And after years of making the beats, playing the clubs, and producing the names that have kept club-goers partying for years, Junior Vasquez can easily count himself a legend. But that doesn’t mean it’s time to count him out. Twenty years after he started his meteoric rise to international fame and invented the notion of the superstar DJ, papa’s got a brand new bag of tricks up his vinyl sleeve. “When I look back at my discography, even I’m impressed,â€? admits Vasquez with a laugh. Indeed, he’s worked with countless divas including Whitney Houston, Cher, and Britney. He’s also one of the few people out there to piss off Madonna‌and live to tell about it. “I like being controversial,â€? he says. “I’ll keep doing whatever I can get away with, because if you don’t cross boundaries, you don’t get attention.â€? Junior Vasquez’s latest cd, Generation Next, is in stores now.

Tracy Young In between her gigs at the nation’s best gay parties, Young spins for celebs like Lenny Kravitz, the Smashing Pumpkins, Sean “Puffy” Combs, and Russell Simmons. She is most famously connected with the Material Girl, who has personally called on Young to spin at her movie premieres, cd release parties, and even her wedding! Tracy has nine music CDs under her

belt including her latest—and, in our opinion, her greatest—Genesis, which celebrates her highly praised annual New Years day event in Miami. Young has been a top five DJ since 2000. She was ranked alongside the original super DJs Manny Lehman, Tony Moran, Vasquez, and Peter Rauhoffer. But where the other giants have seen their stars fall, Young has continued to rise.

If you haven’t heard of the #1 ranked spinner of 2009, Seth Gold, it probably means you’re over thirty. If you’re in your twenties, well then, kid, you need to get out more. Two years ago both Out Magazine and Instinct Magazine heralded Seth Gold as the next “It” DJ. Last year, Genre Magazine named him “America’s Hottest DJ”.

eXpression! August 2009

It’s not just because of his good looks. Gold has something most other DJs don’t—the ear of the young gay crowd. His previous national parties—“The Varsity Tour”, “The Black out Tour” and last year’s “Spring Break Tour”—were smash hits with newbie gays. This year, Gold embarks on “The Knock out Tour”, featuring the stars of TNA Wrestling. The wrestlers may have the hard physiques, but it’s Gold that has the muscle to pack gay dance floors in 2009.

eXpression! August 2009

emember when you were a kid and someone wanted to insult you on the playground? Although the slurs against our mothers have always been popular, some kids were very good at zeroing in on vulnerabilities and going for the kill when we least expected. If you were self-conscious about a zit, some smart ass would know just how to make a joke about it. We could escape just about anything back then, but never the playground affront. For what I’ve been able to observe, the rules haven’t changed but the stakes have become higher. I recently watched a group of kids engage in similar type of exchange that ended with one of them announcing loudly “this is so gay!” Before I could react I realized that I had been the only one offended by the remark. In fact, for days I walked around bothered by the thought that being called gay is supposed to be insulting. That, of course, is only one way of looking at it. It wasn’t until I met with Paul Tamaoka that I was able to look back on the whole situation with a fresh perspective.

13

If you are looking for a brighter point of view, a prettier version of reality or an optimistic opinion, Paul is the person for you. With over twenty years of experience in the practice of turning ordinary into amazing, Paul’s vivacity and sense of style is contagious, to say the least.

is creating art in different ways, watercolors, flower arrangements, fashion design…all that is pretty fits into his artistic hat of tricks. He lovingly credits his mom for his love of art and nature. Growing up in a household filled with music and freedom to be artistic is one of his fondest memories.

When I told him about my thoughts on the word gay being used as ways of demeaning others, his attitude surprised me.

His latest project involved working with recently crowned 2009 Miss Hawaii, Raeceen Woolford.

Tamaoka: Why does it have to be bad though? The word itself means happy, it’s a good word! I personally don’t take offense when I hear it thrown around by others because the way I figure it, when people use any word to demean others it tells me more about who they are than who I am. As far as this particular expression…I confess to have used it before! And here’s why: being gay is more than a lifestyle, it’s a culture! We do have our own history, our customs and traditions, we have a way of dressing and carrying on and even our own language. So why not embrace it? Next time you see a well dressed man, an assertive woman, a beautiful bouquet, a piece of art, claim it! It’s so gay! So it is with renewed optimism that I introduce this self proclaimed local boy. Tamaoka is a hair and make up stylist whose life passion has been to search for, enhance and expose beauty. When Paul is not at the Bottega Antoine working his magic on faithful clients, he

eXpression: What was your role in the pageant? T: I am not a pageant coach; I don’t tell people what to do or how to act in order to win a pageant. I worked with Raeceen on her presentation, enhancing her positive aspects and encouraging her to be who she is onstage and off, to put her best self forward. And of course I took care of her hair and make up as well as helping her to design her evening gown and choose her interview attire. e: Putting one’s best self forward sound like good advice even if you are not trying to be Miss Hawaii. Do you live by your words? T: Absolutely! Whether I am at work or living my personal life, I am always striving to be the best I can be and why not? e: Do you think of yourself as an advocate to the gay community? T: Not really, not in the sense many people would consider advocacy. I go about my business

like everyone else. Some (gay) people may say that I’m a “bad gay” because I don’t have a rainbow sticker on my car, I don’t go to parades…<laughs> but I have other ways in which I impact the community.

divorced, has full custody of his five year-old son and the three of us hang out together all the time. He has told me that his parents have changed the way they think after meeting me. This is very nice to hear.

e: Such as…

e: You have lived here all your life, what would you like to see happen in Hawaii as far as gay rights?

T: I am proud to say that I have been the first gay person many straight folks have gotten to know as a friend. Perhaps because I don’t come on strong when we first meet, by the time they realize I’m gay, it’s irrelevant to them. e: So, in a way you infiltrate the straight community? T: That’s one way of seeing it! <laughs> I like to think that I’m simply bringing something new into their lives, something they may not have expected to accept. I like to break the stereotypical barriers and show that we are just regular folks and we are everywhere doing all kinds of jobs and having the same joys and problems as everyone else. e: What’s your success rate? T: I would say 100 percent! My best friend is a straight guy. He is

T: What I would like to see everywhere, for everyone to stop being judged on the color of their skin, their gender, their religion or whatever…We must all be allowed to make choices and be who we are without fear. We should all be entitled to basic rights and choosing who we marry is just one of them. e: Do you think it will happen in our lifetime? T: It’s happening a little bit everyday. I have a lot of hope for this young generation. I think things are already a lot easier than they used to be and I hope that we’ll continue to go in the right direction. I am optimistic! How wonderful it would be if more of us looked at the cup as half full more often. Here is my challenge for this month: look ahead with hope, see the best in others, hold yourself to high standards and enjoy everyday! Perhaps more beauty will float around you. Wouldn’t that be so gay??

Colt Model Bo Dixon Competes for Body Building Title

Bo Dixon is the ultimate Colt man. His muscle worship video remains one of the studio’s most popular solo films.

What many fans don’t know about Bo is that he is also a professional body builder. In fact this summer, he will compete as an openly gay man for the Mr. Georgia title. We chatted with the thick-bearded powerhouse about his battle for the title and how nude photos on the internet nearly derailed his bodybuilding career. How is it being an out gay man in a hyper-masculine, testosterone-driven industry like professional body building?

When competing at a show, my focus is on winning. I’m never thinking, “I am a gay bodybuilder.” I’m thinking of how my trainers and coaches have done the best they can to prepare me for this event and how I want to do the best I can for them and for me. How are you treated by other athletes?

In general, I’m treated like any other athlete but at a recent competition in Los Angeles, I did notice some gay bodybuilders would not approach me after I publicly kissed my partner on the lips. Many gay athletes fear being black balled. Have you encountered any bias from judges?

Judges are supposed to evaluate athletes strictly on mass, proportions, balance and showmanship. But yes, there have been times that I suspected a judge’s opinion was fogged by their feelings towards gay men.

How did you begin posing for gay muscle worship videos?

18

At most competitions, there are people that scout bodybuilders for the Gay Male Muscle Worship industry. Colt and studios like them actually send agents to find

their next stars. One day I was approached and a few weeks later, I was meeting with Colt executives. How did the body building industry react to your appearing on the cover of a Colt calendar?

They didn’t really know about it. Those that did distanced themselves from me for fear of others thinking they might be gay.    Were you making a statement by appearing in the calendar or did you simply see it as an opportunity to show off your physique?

It was an opportunity to show off what I had accomplished through years of hard work. Growing up, I was a 130-pound bean-pole. I’ll always be that skinny kid inside but this was my chance to show the world the new me.      How did you go from Colt to porn?

I was young and naïve. I wanted people to like me. But it was wrong from the start. My first day on the set, I was ready to run out the door. I was worried, though,

that the internet bloggers would have a field day saying I was a coward or sissy. Also, I am a southern gentleman.  In the south, when you agree to do something, you do it. I was trapped in my own ethics and obligation. What did appearing in gay porn cost you and your career?

I had no clue that the adult film company would sell my images all over the Internet. They’re everywhere! Today, my image is promoting gay muscle worship sites, muscle bear parties, sex sites, dating sites… you name it! I don’t make a dime from any of the parties or sites I’m promoting, nor do I have any control over who uses my images.   Many of the images on the internet are extremely graphic.

I shot the film three months before meeting my partner so he was aware of it. We didn’t think it would be too big a deal because we foolishly believed it would be for dvd release only. We weren’t prepared to see images of me having sex with another man splashed all over the Internet and posted in blogs. You didn’t think that appearing in an adult film might make you a porn “star”?

The only thing I knew about adult films was that they were rented or sold in the back of a video store. I thought it was a small underground industry. I didn’t know there would be worldwide distribution in multimedia via the internet. I didn’t realize the photos would be searchable through Google. What did you do when you became aware that the film was not going to be something you could sweep under the rug?

I took a year off from competitions and was ready to hang up my posing trunks. It was awful.

through it all. He made me realize that shooting the video was a mistake that I’ll have to accept and deal with it. It is my tattoo to wear. Is it true that you now battle internet stalkers?

The Internet has become the doorway for crazy people to get into your home and personal life. I have trusted a few bad people that I met online. One fan stole my cell phone and called everyone on it to get information about me and my relationships. He then posted horrific lies about me and linked it with search engines under Bo Dixon. Unfortunately, the government does not have many laws to protect anyone from cyber bullies.

How did your partner react?

Isn’t that why most adult stars use stage names?

My partner has been my real support system

Obsessed fans will dig as far as they can to find out your personal information. There are gay men and bloggers that find gratification in exposing adult stars for who they really are.   What advice would you give to a young man thinking about entering porn?

If you get into the business, just know that the money does not pay for you to have a bodyguard or extra security. You’re paid once and that’s it. It can be tough because the studio creates a persona for you and then you’re expected to act like your sexual character in public. Where do you go from here?

The videos are so far behind me now. People will watch them forever but I have continued to train and hope to win the overall title at my next bodybuilding contest. If I win, I am on to the nationals.

What is the most important lesson you have learned in your career?

20

I have learned to embrace it all—my bodybuilding, my past and great fans. People tell me that I inspire them to get off the couch and go to the gym. On my Facebook Fan page I tell people what I am eating, give them tips on training and I show them that a man over 40 can still look hot.   Contact Bo via facebook.com/bodixon

“Now serving the BIGGEST and MOST HEAD in Waikiki”

By Paul Baker

SupaNova is an eccentric entertainer that believes music and dance have the power to heal the soul and inspire the heart. The artist first broke into the scene in 2006 with “New Horizon”, a pounding and catchy club track that remains a dance floor fave today. It’s been three years but finally the artist who is part Sylvester, part Grace Jones—and perhaps a dab of beloved Michael Jackson—is back and ready to reclaim the spotlight. “No Secrets” is an edgy euro-infused track about a lady who transforms into a sexual creature of the night. Once again, SupaNova impresses with sharp lyrics and a fresh sound that will add an exciting new flavor to this summer’s dance floors. “No Secrets” is about a woman who transforms into a sexual creature of the night. Is the track autobiographical? How much of SupaNova is in the story? What inspired the track?

“No Secrets” is actually a cover, originally done by an awesome Aussie rock band called The Angels. I was inspired by the energy, grit and rawness of the story. Though not autobiographical, it is biographical in that there are strong themes that resonate for me. My connection to the story and what I channeled when we were recording, is that I am Amanda’s (the songs heroine) narrator, voyeur and/ or alter ego, if you will.  Do you keep secrets? Do tell.

(Whispers) Pssssst...Come here...(Laughs)…I’ll never tell! You have been called part Sylvester, part Grace Jones. How have these icons influenced you as an artist?

Unfortunately, I never got to experience Sylvester live and in person—but I am VERY clear about the ground he broke and the trails he blazed. I can still remember, years ago, up late one night watching videos and here comes “Someone Like You”. I remember being riveted because at the time I was studying dance and Debbie Allen is in this video with Sylvester. I was thinking: is that a man? A woman? Who? What? Even through all these questions something moved in my soul and I saw myself. Now I had heard the other classics, “You Make Me Feel...”  and “Do You Wanna Funk”—but this was looooong before YouTube so there was not nearly as much access to get a visual to connect with what you were hearing. I was forever changed. Did you ever meet Grace Jones?

I have been blessed to meet, see, perform live with and hang out with Mizz Jones. Her voice, that body, and the fashion! I just the other day watched a recent performance of Grace performing “Slave to the Rhythm” in a black corset with her legs up to her neck—but wait—she was hula hooping as she sang the song. She kept it going for the entire song—hula hooping, mic in one hand and cymbals/gongs in other hand and singing! Please don’t get me started on how amazing she sounded and

eXpression! August 2009

Wow—what a gift and blessing to even be acknowledged anywhere in the same space as those two divas. Sylvester’s musical genius and vocal style, that stratospheric falsetto! What? Beyond Ovuh!

What is your favorite Sylvester memory?

how fierce she looked: outfit and body. I got up and ran to the gym. Like Grace Jones, your tracks tend to be hauntingly dark but with a ray of hopeful light infused within.

Yes. I would say for my first two releases, “New Horizon” and “No Secrets”, that is accurate. No matter what is going on in the world or my feelings about what is going on, I do hope that my music gives listeners a way to transcend whatever hardship or negativity or despair.  Has the new horizon that you predicted in your 2006 debut come to be?

eXpression808.com

I would not say that I was predicting a new horizon per se, but that every day there is a new horizon. The imagery is that right before the sun bursts forth through clouds, rises over the water or mountains or comes up over a building, there is a moment when the sky changes

26

and the energy changes. The light has appeared and the darkness is dispelled. This moment to me is one of hope and change and the possibility of something positive. How has the world changed since New Horizon was first released?

How much space do we have for this interview? In the last few months, we have elected the first African-American President into office. Welcome to a New Horizon! In the last weeks we have had an avalanche of loss: legends, icons, angels whatever moniker you choose—the new horizon is now new with the stars that have left the Earth plane to shine on us from heaven. May they rest. Do you see a day when the gay community will enjoy equal rights?

Of course. I can close my eyes and see it right now. We must all continue to hold fast to the vision of what

the world will look like when we all have equal rights; bringing about change peacefully, evolving consciousness positively, and moving humanity forward. As a public figure, do you feel a responsibility to make your voice heard in the struggle?

For me, personally, yes, definitely— point me to platform, turn my mic up! “Werq!” How has SupaNova evolved since you first entered the music scene three years ago?

Wow, so much has changed in the music business. I would definitely say that I have evolved as an artist trying out different sounds and

Real is what you get

styles of music, as well as being more active on the production and business side. I am blessed that the work I have done thus far is opening more and more doors. Who is the man behind SupaNova?  What lies beneath the make-up and wigs?

You are really going IN with these questions! I am just naked before you!! HaHa! Nothing about the wigs and/or makeup is there to conceal I use them to enhance; a feeling, an energy, a character. Is SupaNova as strong and fearless as he presents himself to be on his cd covers?

Strong and fearless? I will take that. Thank you! What do you do when you’re not on stage or in the studio? What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I’m sorry, I have to run and get my dictionary to look-up spare time? What is that? (Laughs) Kidding! But you know what I mean. There is always an e-mail to reply to, a text to write back, a face to book or a my to space. You feel me? And don’t even start me twittering—hold on a sec—just got a text...  What is next for SupaNova?

Writing more songs, collaborating on more songs, producing here and there and please stay tuned for my next single “Body Shake” which will be hitting the floors sometime in August. Check out a preview d1music.biz. Peace, love and body shake it! To learn more about SupaNova, visit www.d1music.biz.

No wonder corporations like Microsoft and Lexus hire Ron White, winner of the 2009 USA Memory Championship in New York, to conduct memory seminars. White, who can memorize a 167-digit number in five minutes, teaches clients to quickly recall names and product information. “The human brain is the best computer ever made, says White.

28

Of course, if White’s brain is a NASA space computer, most of our brains look like abacuses. Many people leave keys at home, lose IDs, lock themselves out of cars and forget to pick up the kids from soccer practice—but that doesn’t mean that memory can’t be improved. —NUI

1:32:36 A

Learn the information. You can’t recall what you haven’t learned. Focus when you need to learn something. Involve all of your senses. For example, read out loud what you want to remember. Physically write it down. Use pictures or color-coding in your notes to make a visual impression. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. The more often you use information, the better you’ll remember it. If you’re meeting someone for the first time, try using their name several times in conversation. You’ll be more likely to remember it later. Take care of yourself. Physical health affects memory. Regular exercise, sufficient sleep and good stress management can help you stay sharp, while smoking can constrict arteries that bring oxygen to the brain, thereby harming memory. Stay confident. Tell yourself that you can’t remember anything, and you likely won’t. Believe in your brain power, and you’ll memorize names, faces and facts more quickly than you think.
