But it’s no wonder why the daytime diva and her devoted minions think Sarabeth’s preserves are the bees’ knees; the NYC-based Kitchen cuts the fruits by hand to avoid bruising, and each batch is slow-simmered and allowed to thicken until it reaches peak flavor Certified kosher by the Orthodox Union (Hellooo, Hanukkah!), these awardwinning jams are available by the jar or in no-need-to-wrap gift and sampler boxes. DIRTY ‘POP’ An homage to the surrealism that defines New York City, celebrated pop artist Olan Montgomery’s new pocket-sized book, POP—Art inspired by New York’s Own Subcultures from Celebrity to Subway, examines with hyper color sunglasses the individuals that affectionately rub the Big Apple’s underbelly, including glittering nightlife personalities, gay idols and the fragile homeless. Combining elements of photography and hand painting with poetry and famous quotes, the images contained within the coffee-table tome are digitally manipulated, printed on canvas, then personally stroked with color and rhetoric by the artist himself—all in a neon-hued attempt to answer the question, “Why can’t a nanosecond last forever?” Cultural icons Boy George, Rufus Wainwright, Alan Cumming, Anna Nicole Smith and Amanda Lepore are among those featured. MERRY-TINIS With flavor infusions like Pomegranate, Chocolate, Tomato and Triple Shot Espresso, Three Olives Vodka is quickly gaining a reputation as the gourmand’s drink of choice. But that doesn’t mean you have to be a food and beverage snob to get your hands on a bottle. For less than a Jackson (Andrew, not Tito), you can snag 750 ml of the smooth stuff to give as a gift to the host of your next holiday party. Extra points for playing guest bartender with this Ho-Ho-Hojito recipe: Muddle 10 mint leaves and half a lime in a tall cocktail glass. Pour in two tablespoons of simple syrup and fill the glass with ice. Add two ounces of Three Olives Pomegranate Vodka (and a dash more for good measure) and top it off with club soda. Garnish with a mint sprig and lime, and voila! Just don’t over do it, OK. Remember what happened last year? ($19.99; ThreeOlives.com)

Resolve to Get Organized in 2010 by: Nui Start 2010 with a bang: organize your home and workspace! Take the first step by installing shelving that is specifically suited to maximize your space. To successfully clear out and keep out clutter, you need storage space. The folks who operate Shelving.com and TheShelvingStore.com have been providing shelving and storage fixtures for over fifty years. They know that one size does not fit all when it comes to maximizing your available storage space. When measuring the space for your shelving project, go up as high as you can. If you have a 9-foot ceiling, use shelving units that are 8-feet high. If you have large and bulky items to store, use shelves that are as deep as your space will allow. Shelving units that are 24-inch, 30-inch, 36-inch deep or even deeper provide much-needed room.
space per square feet of density. For example, a 24-inch-deep by 48-inchwide shelving unit will occupy 8 square feet of floor space. If you erect a shelving unit 8 feet high and add eight shelves to the unit, you would create 128 square feet of shelving space in just 8 square feet of floor space. Think higher, deeper, wider and add as many shelf levels as possible if you want to get the most density out of your floor space.
The more shelves you have in each unit, the greater your storage

shelving. Wall-mounted decorative shelving is a wonderful complement to just about any room, and they create shelving space where free-standing shelving wouldn’t be appropriate. Consider glass shelving for a more contemporary design, or wood grain shelves for a softer, warmer tone. Whatever your interior design tastes, there are shelves that will satisfy your desire for form and function. With decorative wall-mounted shelving, you can display your prized items like trophies,
pottery and pictures in frames. Your home and office should reflect your personality, so choose personalized displays. Using the right shelf will get you on your way to being organized. An efficient home is a happy home. Start 2010 happy and organized with the help of The Shelving Store. Visit their Web sites at www.TheShelvingStore. com and www.Shelving. com for more ideas on how to better utilize your existing storage space. They offer free shelving designs for any project.

The holidays are upon us. Again! And once the shopping is finally done, the gifts opened, the turkey sliced, the candles blown, the relatives sent home or whatever it is that you do to celebrate the end of another year, most of us will have at least two things in common: too many leftovers in the fridge and a pile of unpaid bills in the mail. This, leads to the dreadful New Year’s resolutions, you know the ones…Next year, I will eat less and save more! Although it is a fact that these two heartfelt wishes make the top ten resolution list every year, very few people are able to stick to their own decisions for more than a week! I am not very sure what to tell you about all that stuff in your fridge, but I do have the solution to some of your financial problems, and his name is William Fernandez! Fernandez holds a title that usually makes me think of balding men in bad suits, he’s a Financial Advisor. His debonair looks and youthful personality did not fit my preconceived stereotype. When Fernandez is not busy working at Wealth Strategy Partners, he can be found at various LGBT functions representing the Imperial Court as their Prince. He is also Mr. Galaxy of the Pacific and can be seen in ads for Life foundation—with equally stunning boyfriend, Loren. I wasn’t a hundred percent convinced that I could learn anything about money from someone who looked like he had just left a shooting of ‘Queer as Folk’ to meet with me. Nevertheless, within minutes of speaking to him I was ready to hand him my checkbook and say: here, you take care of this! Were you the kid with the piggy bank who always wanted to tell others how to use their allowances?
<laughs> No, not at all! I wanted to be a doctor! I was pre-med in college and have a degree in Biology and Hawaiian Language from UH Manoa. I graduated 2007 and was deciding what to do next when a chain of events lead me to the world of finances. Take me through these events. eXpression! December 2009
Well, at the time I had a boyfriend who lived in the Mainland. I’d taken some time off to visit him but we ended up breaking up before I even got there so I decided to visit my family in Maui instead. My mom had come upon some money then and gave me some of it as a gift. I used it to go to the Big Island and watch the men’s volleyball tournament. On the way home I sat next to a very nice guy, we started talking and he is now my manager!
13
He talked you out of med school??
How can you help?
<laughs> Not exactly! He told me that one must inspire trust in order to get people to talk about money and that he believed I possessed that quality. It made me think. I had wanted to be a doctor out of a desire to help others. I’ve always believe that I had the ability to make others feel comfortable and I wanted to use that in medicine, but I’ve discovered that there are many other ways to help and I’m happy doing what I do now.
No matter how much money you have or what you want to do with it, I can make sure that your money works harder for you, that you are saving enough to meet your goals, whether it is to save more for next Christmas, to pay for medical bills or retire by age forty-five.
Who are your clients?
Anyone who needs help planning for their financial future. Whether you’re saving to buy a house, to go on a trip, to attend college or to retire, I can help you. That said, I do draw a lot of my clientele from the LGBT community because I understand the special needs of this population.
eXpression808.com
What are some of these needs?
14
I believe that our needs have changed a lot over the years. As a whole the community has started to think about the future in different terms. More of us have families now, or are thinking of starting one. With that comes the desire to grow roots, buy homes, plan for children and their college expenses, etc. We’ve started to think in terms of leaving something that our partners can benefit from without the fear of unfair allocation. Until we can have the benefits of marriage, there is a lot to think about when it comes to protecting our families. Also, some of the needs of the transgender community are of sensitive nature and I hope that they can feel comfortable talking to me about them, knowing that I am not only familiar with their needs, but that I am not judging their lifestyle
Are you “out” at work? How do your colleagues react to you?
Yes, I am out and I’m very comfortable at work. My assistant also happens to be gay and we are known as “team rainbow”. Together we bring in a lot of business and we are respected by the quality of our work. We have no problems; we work with a very nice group of people. What would you say is a common concern amongst all your clients?
A lot of folks want to be sure they have enough savings to be able to retire at a decent age. With the mortality tables changing and people living longer lives, it becomes very important to ask yourself whether or not you can afford your current lifestyle for another thirty or forty years after you stop working. If you have a partner or children, will they be protected in case something happens to you? I think these are concerns everyone shares. What is your advice to these folks?
Long-term savings, relocation of funds, wise investments…there are many things that can be done and it’s very personal. I would have to take a close look at where you are, where you want to be and how long you have to get there. I advise people to come and sit with me

to talk about their plans, their fears and their hopes. For some, it can be scary to talk about finances, but once you put it down on paper and establish a plan it is no longer such a big deal, it’s something you can adjust to and get done. What do you say to someone who is living paycheck to paycheck and have nothing left to save?
I say that everyone has some money that they could be saving and I can help them find it by revising their budgets. It’s amazing and very rewarding to sit with someone who has very limited funds and devise a plan that works for them. It brings peace of mind to know you are doing something about your future. How about the people with short term goals, can you give some advice to the folks who are feeling the burn of the holidays right now?
eXpression808.com
Well, it may be a little too late to save for this
16
Christmas, but I do have to say that if you are using a credit card and planning on making minimum payments next year you may want to reconsider it and maybe think of less expensive gift ideas. Debt is what keeps you from achieving financial goals. If you would like to save for next year you can easily hide a little bit of money every month starting now. Money that is not easily accessible works for you. I like online savings because you can send a small amount of cash from your paycheck directly into an account with no minimums, no fees and with good interest rates. You usually need a couple of days to access this money and it’s my experience that if you can’t walk up to an ATM machine and empty your account on a whim, your savings grow a lot bigger. ! Most of us can agree that 2009 went by in flash. The older we get, the faster it goes folks! As we approach the New Year, think of your resolutions with a little more determination. A penny a day keeps the creditors away!
By Steven Perry
Originally, you are from the Pacific Northwest, but now live in ‘the big apple’; do you miss it?
I knew I belonged to New York! I like Seattle, but I can’t handle the rain. It’s depressing. My family is still there so I don’t get to see them as much as I want, but I go back once or twice a year and they come to New York to visit. As a top contestant of Project Runway: Season 4, any juicy gossip for us?
There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that no one ever sees. I’m trying to think of something interesting that wouldn’t hurt anyone’s feelings. It’s interesting to note that when I left the show I was told multiple times that I could come back the next season, but when it came to that time they never asked me back. I thought that was kind of lame. You just returned from the World Outgames in Copenhagen with an astounding eight medals! Did you exceed your expectations?
Actually, yes! I had been training really hard and I was hoping to do well, but I honestly didn’t expect to win a medal in all my events. It was amazing. You were first diagnosed with HIV in the 1990’s and close to twenty years later look exactly the same. What’s your secret to staying healthy and fit?
I work out about three hours a day, so that keeps my body in shape. I try to sleep seven hours a night and I rarely drink alcohol. The rest is just good genes and luck. What’s it like being a role model for the LGBT community in particular, living with HIV?
I just remember all the advocacy work that needs to be done and I try to remember that I am a voice for individuals that can’t, or are afraid to speak on their own behalf. I also get plenty of amazing emails and messages of thanks and gratitude, which continually inspire me. What can we look forward to from Jack Mackenroth in the coming months?
I am covering New York Fashion Week and interviewing tons of designers for Fashion News Live (myFNL.com). Also, I have just finished filming a pilot for a design show with my Project Runway buddy Kevin Christiana and we are shopping it around to networks so hopefully you will see me back on TV. I will also be in New Orleans, Philadelphia and San Francisco in the upcoming months speaking on behalf of Living Positive By Design (LivingPositiveByDesign.com). If disco balls, ecstasy, pearls, Studio 54, sex, crystal chandeliers, Purple Rain, and Crème Brule, could be whipped in a blender and made into a delicious pop-dance musical confection, you would have Pretty Mess, the debut CD from dance-pop’s latest sensation Erika Jayne. Pretty Mess, which includes the No. 1 Billboard Dance Radio Airplay hit singles “Rollercoaster” and “Stars”. It’s typically a no–no to be so bold as to compare any new artist to the Queen of Pop, Madonna. But, when it’s comes to Erika Jayne, it’s impossible not to make the comparison. Just ask the Guardian U.K., which wrote, “Erika Jayne is Madonna trapped in the moment when she recorded the Erotica album. She’s Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge goes trance with a dash of debauchery, or Gwen Stefani goes burlesque. She’s equal parts Hollywood glamour and S&M chic, the spawn of a Sapphic union between Rita Hayworth and Traci Lords.” “That is a perfect description of my music and vibe, actually,” says the Atlanta-bred, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter proudly. “All of that influenced me, as did Purple Rain, the feel of Studio 54, Kylie Minogue, and the Old Hollywood designers Edith Head and Adrian Adolph Greenberg. They were all about having a good time, and that is what my record is about. I want people to have fun, dance, and escape into fantasy. It’s a very sensual, erotic, luxurious-feeling album.”
The third single to follow the two chart-toppers “Rollercoaster” and “Stars” is the upbeat disco-flavored dance track “Give You Everything.” “It’s the first song I recorded. I did it in one take. It’s my favorite song,” she says. “’Run Along’ is my Atlanta song. I love my home-
town. It has Ike Dirty on it. We were feeling very glamour-ghetto-royalty when we wrote it. ‘I Lose Myself’ is about an orgy and the decadence of Paris in the ‘20s. ‘Rollercoaster’ is simple, catchy, and fun . ‘Just a Phase’ is my sassy, blow-off song. ‘Everybody Wants Some’ is a total performance number, very sex kitten.” Erika gravitated to performing as young as her earliest memory. “My mom was a young mom, 18, so she would always have the latest music on in the car. And she was also a classically trained pianist who taught lessons in our home,” explains Erika. “At 3-years-old, I would go in the closet, ask my mom to introduce me, and pop out to put on a show for my family. I would usually sing ‘Little Miss Muppet.’ Then, when I was 5, I won the Best Little Performer award in my dance class, and my first performance was singing Dolly Parton’s ‘9 to 5’ in the third grade school talent show.” The precocious child also did musical theater (she was Val in A Chorus Line and Frastrada in Pippin) and honed her singing, dancing, and acting chops at North Atlanta School of Performing Arts for high school. It was in high school when she got her first real taste of what it would be like to be an international pop star. She toured the world in the school’s revue show where she performed “9 to 5” and Madonna’s “Into the Groove.” “I was singing and dancing five nights a week on top of going to school,” says Erika, who is also a skilled ballet dancer. “At 18, I moved to New York and was in a few girl groups, but I always wanted to step out on my own.” Erika has indeed accomplished more before the release of her debut CD than most artists. Along with two chart-topping dance radio tracks, the sensual video for “Stars”—directed by Scott Speer (Will.i.am, the Veronicas, Paris Hilton)—spent 12 weeks (peaking at No. 2) on LOGO’s The Click List, and the song also hit No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Play chart and is featured in the 2009 movie American Summer. Three other songs have been placed in movies as well—“Rollercoaster” is in 2008’s Deal featuring Burt Reynolds and in the horror

To honor her love of all things Prince, Erika scored Prince protégé Sheila E. to play percussion on the sexually charged “Time to Realize,” one of the four songs Erika co-wrote. “Having Sheila play was a dream come true!” she says. The singer also recorded a cover of Apollonia 6’s 1984 hit “Sex Shooter,” which was featured in Purple Rain. “When I saw her perform the song in the movie in lingerie, I was totally shocked. It was so provocative, and I loved that.” Erika also scored heavyhitters on the production side for her 14-song collection of dance, rhythmic pop, and dreamy electronica songs. Peter Rafelson (Madonna, Britney Spears, Stevie Nicks) and Eric Kupper (Shakira, Destiny’s Child, Kylie Minogue) produced and co-wrote Pretty Mess, while Canadian singer-songwriter Esthero (as Pinklake), Jahi Lake (Chris Brown) and Ike Dirty (Lil’ Scrappy, Ying Yang Twinz, and son of legendary artist Isaac Hayes) contributed additional production.

“I couldn’t have asked for a more fitting scene in The Neighbor for ‘Just a Phase’ to be playing in,” Erika explains. “These young girls are having a slumber party and they are just jumping up and down and going crazy to the song. It reminded me of when I was a little girl and would jump on my bed singing along to music. Just pure, unadulterated fun! It’s what I hope everyone will do when they listen to Pretty Mess. It’s all about that feeling.”

India is a country that enchants with her beauty and diversity. She enriches with her culture, stuns with her modernity, embraces with her warmth, and overwhelms with her hospitality.
26
For centuries, the Taj Mahal inspired travelers to cross continents to view its incomparable beauty. But only recently, with the popularity of the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, has the rest of the country sparked the interest of westerners. Leading the pack to rarely charted cities like Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur and Mumbai (Bombay) are, as usual, the gays. Traveling gay, Bryan Herb of ZoomVacations.com, will lead an exhibition to the enchanting country.

Is the India portrayed in SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE the real India?
Bryan Herb: The movie does an amazing job of illustrating the beauty of the people, the spirit, strength, and grace of India. However, the movie doesn’t portray much of the tourism side of India. India has some of the best hotels in the world, and adventures that you won’t find anyplace else, like riding elephants, centuries old castles, and tiger safaris. And don’t get me started on the food. The food in India—just heaven. What surprises await travelers in India?
It’s incredible to go somewhere where you feel like you’re not in Kansas anymore. In Dehli, businessmen walk to work and have to wait while a cow crosses their path. In Udaipur, women ride on motorcycles with their long saris flowing in the wind behind them. In Mumbai, there are professional ear cleaners on the street! We asked our guide why someone would want their ears cleaned by some dude on the street, and she said, “Men get their ears cleaned to feel like a maharaja.” I guess it’s their way of feeling decadent and pampered. How breathtaking is the Taj Mahal?
CY
The Taj Mahal does not disappoint. There are these unbelievable inlaid fine stones and jems, nestled within intricate carvings all over and throughout the Taj Mahal. It’s gorgeous, magical, romantic…there really is nothing like it. CMY

Can travelers stay in the real palaces of Delhi? Are these the palaces of Sultans?
Yes! You want to talk about feeling like a maharaja? Not only is the atmosphere beyond belief, the service at the palaces is spectacular. What does India offer gay travelers specifically?
eXpression! December 2009
Gay men and women love stylish, beautiful things. They appreciate fine cuisine, and unique, multi-sensory experiences. We also love to learn and I think because of our own struggles, we embrace diversity. No, you do not go to India to party in gay bars and clubs. There are out gay people in India and some gay bars, but it’s small. You go to India to experience all of the incredible things the country has to offer. It’s truly a trip that can change your life.
