The agency posted a photo on social media Wednesday, saying it’s the largest seizure of pot the department has ever made. Obama drops a new mix President shares what keeps him dancing all summer long

MUSIC President Barack Obama shared his vacation vibes Thursday by releasing his annual playlist of jams that have presumably been on heavy rotation around the executive mansion lately. Surprisingly, it didn’t include a single Beyonce track — a shocker, since Queen B is a close pal of the Obamas and has turned up at the White House for all kinds of events. But Beyonce’s husband, Jay Z, made the cut: His “So Ambitious” (with Pharrell) is on the list of “daytime” tunes. Other artists whose songs appear on the playlist have also been guests of the Obamas, including state dinner attendees and performers Jannelle Monae, Common, Mary J. Blige and Sara Bareilles. But some playlist performers are ones we couldn’t imagine rubbing shoulders with heads of state (sorry, Wale). Ready to Obama-fy your summer soundtrack? Here are the full daytime playlist and the recommended nighttime jams. EMILY HEIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

2nd MetroAccess driver charged with sex assault

SILVER SPRING Two people died, dozens were injured and others were unaccounted for after a massive explosion and fire at an apartment complex in Silver Spring, authorities said Thursday. Among those injured were three firefighters, treated and released after a large-scale rescue effort in which some people dropped children off balconies to safety below. The two people found dead in the debris of the four-story building have not yet been identified. Montgomery County Police Assistant Chief Russ Hamill said at a news conference Thursday the explosion’s cause remains under investigation. Residents reported smelling gas before the explosion, and officials responded to calls for a potential gas leak at the complex last month. In all, 34 people, including the three firefighters, were taken to hospitals for treatment. Hospital officials said most were released Thursday. People more than a mile away

They used ladders to rescue them. “People were dropping children and jumping out of other windows,” Goldstein said. “Everybody was getting out of the building as rapidly as possible.” An off-duty police officer working part-time nearby heard

the blast, saw large flames and began a “very heroic” effort to rescue people with other officers and firefighters, Hamill said. Keni Flores said she was in an adjacent building when she heard an explosion and saw the flames. “I just see fire everywhere,” she said. “I was thinking nobody can survive in that fire.” Karina Hauffen was also in a nearby building at the time. “It was a big boom, the building shook and everybody ran out,” she said. nation+world Chain trying to adapt to online shopping era as sales keep dropping ECONOMY Department store giant Macy’s said Thursday it plans to close 100 stores, a dramatic step that is aimed at helping the chain get ahead of a potentially crippling problem: America, executives say, has too many stores for the online shopping era. Macy’s has been steadily pruning its portfolio, often moving to close several dozen underperforming stores right after the annual holiday rush. But in dropping a summertime announcement that it will close almost 15 percent of its locations,

the chain appears to be moving more aggressively than many of its retail industry counterparts to adapt to a fast-changing shopping environment. Macy’s has plenty of reasons to scramble: Many of its stores are located in small, regional malls, the kind whose foot traffic has been especially hard hit by the rise of e-commerce. Shoppers increasingly turn to off-price retailers such as T.J. Maxx and fast-fashion players such as H&M. These factors, along with a pullback in spending by international tourists and unseasonable weather, have left Macy’s in a rut that has stretched for more than a year. On Thursday, the company said it saw a 2.6 percent

Macy’s said the store closures would probably cost it about $1 billion in annual sales. In some ways, it should not come as a surprise that Macy’s is downsizing. It has about 675 fullline stores, 728 including outlets such as Macy’s Home stores. Jeff Gennette, the Macy’s executive who will take over as CEO in 2017, said in a statement that nearly all of the stores the company plans to close are ones at which sales volume and profitability have been sliding.

U.S. keeping marijuana in same class as heroin

“These circumstances are unlike any party you have attended before. ... One rule: No crying.”

DEA says it will allow more research into pot’s potential benefits

HEALTH The Obama administration has decided marijuana will remain on the list of most-dangerous drugs, fully rebuffing growing support across the country for broad legalization, but it said it will allow more research into its medical uses. The decision to expand research into marijuana’s medical potential could pave the way for the drug to be moved to a lesser category. Heroin, peyote and marijuana, among others, are considered Schedule I drugs because they have no medical application; cocaine and opiates, for example, have medical uses and, while still illegal for recreational use, are designated Schedule II drugs. The Drug Enforcement Administration said the agency’s decision came after a lengthy review and consultation with the Health and Human Services Department, which said marijuana “has a high potential for abuse” and “no accepted medical use.” The decision means that pot will remain illegal for any purpose under federal law, despite laws in 25 states and the District that have legalized pot for either medicinal or recreational use. Advocates have long pushed for the federal government to follow suit.

Pot is legal for medical or recreational use in 25 states and the District.

“If the scientific understanding about marijuana changes — and it could change — then the decision could change,” DEA acting administrator Chuck Rosenberg wrote in a letter to the governors of Rhode Island and Washington, who sought the review of marijuana’s classification in 2011. “But we will remain tethered to science.” Rosenberg said designating marijuana as a Schedule I drug does not necessarily mean it is as dangerous as other drugs. “It is best not to think of drug scheduling as an escalating ‘danger’ scale — rather, specific statutory criteria [based on

While the DEA won’t reclassify marijuana, the agency did announce plans to make it easier for researchers to study pot’s possible medical benefits by expanding the number of entities that can legally grow marijuana for research purposes. Currently, only researchers at the University of Mississippi are allowed to grow marijuana, as part of a contract with the National Institute on Drug Abuse. ALICIA A. CALDWELL (AP)

Huffington leaves HuffPo for startup site MEDIA Arianna Huffington, the former conservative commentator who in 2005 co-founded The Huffington Post and has built it into one of the web’s most prominent liberal media giants, said Thursday that she will step down to focus on a new healthand-wellness startup. Saying on Twitter that she had thought “HuffPost would be my last act,” Huffington, 66, announced she would instead focus on a new venture, Thrive Global. Launching in November, it is focused on “ending the collective delusion that burnout is a necessary price for success.” In June, Huffington said she was working on a new startup but that her “primary focus” would remain her namesake site. But in a statement Thursday, she acknowledged she “simply couldn’t do justice to both companies” as Thrive Global’s prospects evolved. Rumors swirled about her role after HuffPo parent company AOL was sold to Verizon last year for $4.4 billion. Verizon said in July that it would also buy Yahoo, whose online news business closely parallels the HuffPo’s. Huffington’s leadership has been called into question in recent months due to worries about her decision-making and her sharp focus on side ventures. In April, she was named to the board of directors for Uber, a potential conflict of interest given that the HuffPo covers Uber news. DREW HARWELL

Clinton: Don’t trust Trump Hillary says her rival’s policies will only benefit ‘millionaires like himself’ WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX

Trump’s ISIS remarks keep his base happy

ANDREW HARNIK (AP)

WARREN, MICH. Hillary Clinton cast the presidential election Thursday as a choice between policies that would lift up American workers and those that would mostly help the very rich, attacking Donald Trump for advancing an agenda that “only benefits millionaires like himself.” In a rebuttal to Trump’s economic speech in Detroit on Monday, the Democratic presidential nominee offered a bullish assessment for the prospects of the middle class if she is in the White House — and accused Trump of peddling pessimism and misleading voters with claims that he’s “on the side of the little guy.” “Donald Trump wants America to work for him and his friends, at the expense of everyone else,” Clinton said. Appearing in a largely bluecollar area outside Detroit, Clinton broke little new ground on policy proposals but highlighted her plans to invest in jobs and infrastructure in a manner calculated to appeal to white working-class voters who have been Trump’s strongest constituency. “I want to invest in veterans, our kids, our police officers and so much more,” she said. “You can then draw your own conclusions about values.” Clinton touted previously released proposals to make public college tuition-free for families

Clinton highlighted her plans to invest in jobs and infrastructure at a policy speech in Warren, Mich., on Thursday.

making up to $125,000 a year and to raise taxes on corporations and the wealthy. She also attacked Trump on his signature economic issue, a promise to renegotiate the terms of trade with China and other countries. Clinton acknowledged that past trade deals had often been sold with “rosy scenarios,” and she repeated her opposition to the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership with several Pacific Rim countries, vowing: “I oppose it now, I’ll oppose it after the election, and I’ll oppose it as president.” Clinton also criticized Trump’s approach on trade. “He may talk a big game on trade, but his approach is based on fear, not strength,” she said. Trump’s campaign responded

$575K

to the speech with a flurry of press releases highlighting Clinton’s support of some past trade deals and claiming she would “100% enact the TPP if she gets the chance.” One release called Clinton a “trickle-down globalist.” The site of Clinton’s speech, at a Macomb County company that expanded its auto-supply business into the defense and aerospace industries, was selected with electoral politics in mind. The jurisdiction has sided with the Democratic nominee four times and the Republican nominee four times during the past eight presidential elections. It is key to Trump’s chance of carrying Michigan in November. In her remarks, Clinton chided Trump’s companies for making clothing and other products

overseas and unveiled a website that lists companies making similar products in the United States. She also zeroed in on a Trump proposal to dramatically reduce taxes on “pass-through” businesses, which do not pay corporate income taxes but whose owners are taxed at individual rates on their share of profits. Such entities are the most common structure for small businesses — which would benefit from Trump’s plan — but they are also heavily utilized by companies that make up the Trump Organization. Clinton said Trump is attempting to give himself “a backdoor tax cut” and characterized his proposal as the “Trump Loophole.” JOHN WAGNER AND JIM TANKERSLEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

BERNIE BACKLASH

Berniephiles and Bernouts alike shamed Sanders on social media this week for the purchase and accused him of betraying the socialist values that built his movement. Some even demanded donor refunds. (THE WASHINGTON POST) Ex-University of Colorado student avoids prison after sex assault conviction

Despite Donald Trump’s repeated assertions — on Wednesday night at a rally in Florida and again on Thursday morning in an interview with CNBC — President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are not the founders of the Islamic State. But Trump’s actual point is that Obama’s foreign policy during Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state created the vacuum where ISIS took power. This is just another example of how Trump’s rhetoric overlaps so poorly with his campaign effort. Trump prides himself on outrage. He’s got the perfect excuse, rolled out a year ago this week: He’s not politically correct. “All I do is tell the truth,” he said on CNBC on Thursday. “I am a truth-teller.” What motivates Trump to make questionable statements is that he feeds off the approval of his base. He has been repeating the line about Clinton being responsible for the rise of the ISIS for a while. But the response to his blaming Obama was different. His description of the president as the founder of ISIS at that rally this week gained volume and frequency as the crowd ate it up. In other words, Trump embraces arguments common among a subset of the conservative right and that subset applauds his candidacy. You don’t have to like what he says, but as long as the fans at his rallies do, that’s what seems to matter most. PHILIP BUMP (TWP)

Elimination on the pitch

Bethesda’s Katie Ledecky has already added three gold medals to her haul and could win another Friday in the 800-meter freestyle.

This pool is our pool 21 Ledecky spearheads U.S. swimming team tearing through Rio

SWIMMING In one way, Katie Ledecky is morphing, right here in front of an international audience, into a everyone-knows-who-she-is star, the premier female freestyle swimmer not just of these Olympics, but of all-time. In another way, she’s just doing her part. She is an American swimmer at the Rio Games. So she must win medals. Ledecky did that Wednesday, taking the third gold medal, and fourth medal overall, of her Olympics as the anchor leg of the victorious women’s 4x200meter freestyle relay team. She is delivering in the way others can only fantasize about, the latest

a sizzling leg that turned what looked like a massive deficit into a walk-in-the-park advantage, taking over for Maya DiRado and simply putting away Australia. “I knew Maya put me in the right spot to get out there,” Ledecky said. “I knew I had to just kind of pace myself and not jump on it too fast too early. I knew I could get it done.” As did everyone at Olympic Aquatics Stadium. Ledecky’s swim Wednesday would be the performance of a lifetime for almost anyone else in Rio, but she made it feel normal. When DiRado finished the third leg, the United States trailed Australia by 89 hundredths of a second. Then Ledecky’s first 100 meters were the fastest of any on the American team, and the crisis had become casual. Her split of 1:53.74

was the fastest of any swimmer in the race by nearly a second, and she touched 1.84 seconds ahead of Australia. “That was so much fun,” Ledecky said. As the 19 -year- old from Bethesda pulls all this off — as she makes it just seem natural even as she defines “outlier” — she merely fits into a larger

puzzle here for the U.S. swim team. Let us recognize not just Ledecky and Michael Phelps, but also Ledecky’s teammates in the relay final, Allison Schmitt, DiRado (who added a gold to silver and bronze won already) and Leah Smith. Recognize, too, Josh Prenot, who snared a silver in the men’s 200 breaststroke, just seven hundredths of a second behind surprise winner Dmitriy Balandin of Kazakhstan. The last time the U.S. didn’t lead the medal count in swimming was 1988, when it was beaten by the drug-laden East Germans. Four years ago in London, the Americans crushed all comers, winning 31 medals, including 16 golds, trouncing second-best China’s 10 medals. After five nights in Rio, the U.S. is on pace to edge that total.

The women’s soccer quarterfinals are set. Here are three people to watch while the defending gold medalists from the U.S. match up with Sweden on Friday (noon, NBCSN). GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

3 Pia Sundhage Before she took over as coach of the Swedish team, Sundhage coached the U.S. to two gold medals. She led Sweden to a 0-0 draw against the U.S. in 2015.

2 Hope Solo The goalkeeper could use a rebound performance after allowing two goals on free kicks in the U.S. team’s final game of group play, a 2-2 draw with Columbia.

1 Megan Rapinoe After undergoing major surgery on her right knee last December, Rapinoe has recovered quickly. The winger made her first start back with the team Tuesday.

Rose scores Rio’s first hole-in-one

Justin Rose hit the first hole-in-one in modern Olympic history Thursday on the par-3 fourth hole of the Olympic Golf Course. Grabbing a 7-iron, the British player knocked the ball within about 10 feet of the hole before two bounces and a short roll sent it into the cup. Australia’s Marcus Fraser shot an 8-under 63 to take a three-shot, firstround lead over Henrik Stenson of Sweden and Graham DeLaet of Canada. Rose shot 67. Biles soars at the finish to grab all-around gold Arena, Biles invited a raucous crowd to her coming-out party, which concluded with a floor exercise that bristled with highflying acrobatics and radiated total abandon. After losing the lead at the end of her weakest event, the uneven bars, Biles stormed back to claim all-around gold, her sport’s most coveted prize, by more than two points over her American teammate, Aly Raisman, who took silver. Russia’s Aliya Mustafina took bronze. It was Biles’ second gold medal of the Rio Games, coming 48 hours after leading the fivewoman U.S. squad to team gold over second-place Russia. GYMNASTICS If there’s a quibble to make with Simone Biles, it’s that she does herself a disservice in making gymnastics look so easy. You won’t catch her grimacing. She’ll never double-over with exhaustion, tongue dangling, between routines. In Biles’ hands, the sport is such a celebration, such a party, that no theatrics are needed other than the few flecks of glitter she lines around her eyes so they match her sparkly leotard. for the U.S., which became the first country to claim four consecutive golds in the women’s all-around with the young Texan following Carly Patterson, Nastia Liukin and Gabby Douglas. With two golds draped around her neck so far, Biles has a chance for three more in the coming week, when she competes in the event finals of vault, beam and floor exercise. In her final event Thursday, the tumbling mat turned into Biles’ canvas. She painted brilliantly, flipping to impossible heights as she crossed the mat. There was no need to wait for a score. No one could touch Biles. No one could soar quite so high.

Since participating in its first Summer Olympics in London in 1948, Puerto Rico has amassed a total of eight medals. Six were bronze, and two were silver. The island has never won gold, but singles player Monica Puig, a firsttime Olympian ranked 34th in the world, could change that. With her emotional win over Germany’s Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinals Thursday, Puig advanced to face Petra Kvitová of the Czech Republic in the semifinals. The berth ensures the 22-year-old Puig will have at least the chance to play for the bronze on Saturday. But if she beats Kvitová on Friday, she’ll advance to play for a Puerto Rican first. Reservations for first base

Werth currently riding longest on-base streak in majors at 40 games

Playoff chances come down to conference ties

THEARON W. HENDERSON (GETTY IMAGES)

NATIONALS Saying that Jayson Werth does not pander to the opinions of others is an understatement equivalent to saying that he is not exactly clean-shaven. By now, Werth is aware of what works for him and what doesn’t, a creature of health-conscious habits and years of experience. But this season, Werth, 37, decided to heed outside advice. Instead of being patient, like he always had, he would try to be more aggressive, like everyone always said he should. When that didn’t work, he went back to hitting his way, and the longest on-base streak in the majors — which reached 40 games as he doubled and homered Wednesday — was born. “Everybody that’s anybody always told me, ‘You need to be more aggressive, you need to swing at the first pitch, you need to do this, you need to do that,’ ” Werth said. “That’s just not really been my game, but for whatever reason I thought this was the year I was going to do that. And I think I’ve silenced all those people that have told me over the years that that’s the way I should hit.” Werth struggled in April (.211 batting average) and May (.235), working 13 walks combined in those two months with an on-base percentage below .300. That figure jumped to .438 in June, and

After slumping in the first two months of the season, Werth’s switch back to a more patient approach has paid off.

has been better than .350 since. As of Thursday morning, Werth ranked 13th among NL outfielders in on-base percentage. Heading into Friday’s home game against Atlanta (7:05 p.m., MASN; CBS), he was three games away from tying Ryan Zimmerman’s team record of 43 straight games on base. “It’s more of a product of my approach and having good atbats. I’m not putting a whole lot into it,” Werth said. “A little before that whole thing started, I got back to trying to work counts … and seeing pitches.” Manager Dusty Baker — an avid proponent of aggressive hitting — said Werth assured

him he would heat up. “Glad to see him come to life,” Baker said. “Even though he’s struggled, he still has 15 home runs. He assured me he’s a second-half, hot-weather player. Boy, we’d sure like to see him get hot.” While Werth has proven himself capable of driving in runs, he sees himself more as someone who starts rallies — a role he can fill in the second spot in the order, where he has hit .279 this season. “That’s kind of just what I’ve done. I know I’m not a 140-RBI guy. I’m an on-base guy that can drive in runs,” Werth said. “Just sticking to my approach and just being true to myself, again, has

been the best way for me to go about it.” A season after playing 88 games, playing in 102 thus far has been perhaps the most impressive part of Werth’s year. After he returned from shoulder surgery, then a broken wrist, Werth has drawn credit from Baker for understanding the difference between being “hurt” and “injured.” “Now, in the days of modern baseball, something’s wrong with a couple guys, even if it’s minor, they have a tendency not to play unless they’re 100 percent,” Baker said. “Jayson shows you how to go out there and get the job done.” CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NFL denies Dallas commemorative decals

The Dallas Cowboys’ plan to wear helmet decals honoring the city’s five slain police officers during preseason and regular-season games has been turned down by the NFL. “Everyone has to be uniform with the league and the other 31 teams,” Stephen Jones, the team’s executive vice-president, told the Dallas Morning News on Wednesday. “We respect their decision.” Dallas can wear the decals featuring a five-pointed star and the words “Arm in Arm” in training camp. (TWP)

Reynaldo Lopez likely to start for Nationals on Saturday (7:05 p.m, MASN) against Atlanta

D.C. UNITED What a difference a conference makes. D.C. United (5-8-9) enters Saturday’s home game against Portland (7 p.m., NewsChannel 8) in the midst of a six-game winless streak that includes four draws and two losses. Assistant Chad Ashton will coach this weekend because Ben Olsen was ejected against Philadelphia and suspended one game. Without a win since June 25, the club could be facing a lost season. Luckily, United plays in a weak Eastern Conference. In the East, the club is still just two points outside of the sixth and final playoff spot. Were it in the West, United would be eight points out of the postseason. Were they in the same conference, the top four teams in the West would all be leading the East’s top seed, New York City FC, which is 10-7-7 with a goal differential of 0. The New York Red Bulls, Montreal Impact and Toronto FC are all ahead of United in the East, but each has flaws that could be exposed in the postseason. If United manages to finish in the top six in the East, it wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest the team could score an upset. Saturday will be the last time D.C. United faces a Western Conference foe all season. With 11 straight matches against conference opponents to close out the season, United still has playoff hopes for 2016. SETH VERTELNEY (FOR EXPRESS)

A treat on every corner Bloomingdale is only 12 blocks, but it holds plenty of surprises

HOT ‘HOODS For a neighborhood of only about 12 square blocks, Bloomingdale manages to pack in a lot of hidden treasures: unassuming dive bars, surprise parks and award-winning restaurants. Tucked between Shaw and Eckington on the border of the District’s northwest quadrant, Bloomingdale stretches from Second Street NW to North Capitol, bordered by Florida Avenue NW to the south and Bryant and Channing places NW to the north. And while its old-timey rowhouses help the neighborhood maintain its turn-of-thecentury charm, it’s also become the home of shiny new restaurants and bars — and soon, to even more residential space.

The G8 runs along Rhode Island Avenue NW and goes into the heart of downtown or up north through Brookland to Woodridge, and the 90, 92 and 96 cut along Florida Avenue, making trips down to H Street or up to Woodley Park a (somewhat lengthy) breeze. The 80 line travels along North Capitol and over to Foggy Bottom. You can also find Capital Bikeshare stations at the corners of R Street and Florida Avenue NW and up at First Street and Rhode Island Avenue NW.

Housing options Bloomingdale is known for its ample rowhouses — their colorful conic and pyramidal turrets are even featured in the opening credits of Netflix’s “House of Cards.” The large homes draw families and young renters looking for roommates, and many are split into smaller units. A handful of small apartment buildings are also nestled in amongst the Victorian-era houses, including The Providence (70 Rhode Island Ave. NW), The Rhode Island (1929 First St. NW) and The Nebraska (51 Randolph Pl. NW). One of the most notable is the Parker Flats at Gage School, which converted a 1904 multi-building brick school campus between U and V streets NW into a set of 92 condominiums. Another area of note, McMillan Park (and its reservoir) sits just to the northwest of Bloomingdale proper. This longshuttered former sand filtration site is set to be polished up with acres of updated public grounds, restored grain silos and a slew of new apartment buildings. The first buildings are set to be complete in 2018.

Offerings at the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue, First Street and T Street NW include, clockwise from top left, Bloomingdale Wine and Spirits, Grassroots Gourmet, Aroi and the colorful bicycle display at S & S City Cleaners.

The great outdoors Tucked away behind stately rowhouses, Crispus Attucks Park is the buried treasure in Bloomingdale’s center. At just over an acre, the park is like Brigadoon, appearing only once you’ve walked a few dozen yards down an alley between U or V streets NW. Summer afternoons there are calm, with quiet reading nooks under trees, sun-soaked benches and stretches of open field to accommodate as many cartwheels as your heart desires. There’s also nearby LeDroit Park, which sits just west of Second Street NW between Elm and V streets NW, which offers a jungle gym for kids and a fenced-in area for pets. It’s also home to Common Good City Farm, a community farm where locals can volunteer to farm, shop for produce or learn about gardening.

The culture Behind the dive bar Showtime’s

unassuming facade, you’ll find Bloomingdale’s premiere entertainment, Granny and the Boys. From 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Sundays, Granny, a skilled musician and octogenarian, plays sweet funk fusion melodies on the keyboard, with “the boys” (men in their late 50s and beyond) as her backup. Across the street at Boundary Stone, a whiskey bar with better-than-pub fare, Mondays are open mic nights, with halfpriced drafts after 10 p.m. For those looking for a lower decibel level, Yoga District offers classes seven days a week for pre-work, post-dinner or weekend stretch sessions.

The markets Bloomingdale doesn’t have a major grocery chain within its borders, but it has a string of little independent markets that supply staples (though sometimes at a steep price). Giant at City Market at O in Shaw takes just a quick G2 bus ride, and a Harris

Teeter near the NoMa-Gallaudet U Metro is not far away. For something a little closer to home, a bright corner near Big Bear Cafe hosts a farmers market each Sunday between May and November, where you’ll find hyper-local produce, baked goods, fresh pasta and more. The market participates in the city’s Produce Plus program, which gives $10 toward fruits and vegetables to any D.C. resident participating in various foodpurchasing assistance programs. When city cash runs out, the market has additional privately funded resources for matching food stamps. And for those looking to take to the open road, Bike House is on hand at the Sunday farmers market to help Bloomingdale residents fix up their two-wheelers free of charge.

Island Avenue and First Street NW. The Red Hen is the star of the show, with upscale Italian dishes and wine that have made it a favorite among food critics. That buzz has led to long wait times, so arrive early and go for a seat at the bar. Steps away, Bacio Pizzeria’s menu lists pies with names Bloomingdale locals will appreciate, like the Randolph Place or the Crispus Attucks. A variety of sweet and savory scones, muffins and cookies line the glass case around the corner at Grassroots Gourmet on Rhode Island Avenue NW. Fresh bread from D.C.’s Metropolitan Baking Company is also in stock on the weekends, along with Grassroots’ own cinnamon rolls. Aroi’s Thai cuisine, El Camino’s tacos, Crisp’s fried chicken, and Rustik Tavern’s brick-oven pizza round out the options at the bustling intersection. MEGAN DOWNEY (FOR EXPRESS)

Various foodstuffs embrace their taste for adventure in “Sausage Party.”

‘Miss Sharon Jones!’ SONY PICTURES

Unrated, 93 min.

A deliciously foul feast ‘Sausage Party’ takes viewers on a profane — and surprisingly profound — journey FILM REVIEW It’s happened. Someone has outdone the “Team America” puppet sex scene and even made it look somewhat quaint in comparison. Co-writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have used their singular and delightfully twisted imaginations once more, to concoct “Sausage Party,” easily the year’s most audacious film. And it’s packaged in animation cutesy enough for Pixar. In the grand tradition of “Toy Story,” “Sausage Party” imagines the lives of the foodstuffs in the local supermarket aisle. Frank (voiced by Rogen), a nondescript hot dog, waits somewhat impatiently with his fellow mates to be selected by the gods (humans) to be taken to a

paradise in The Great Beyond (purchased). All of the foodstuffs in the store know something good is out there waiting. The foods begin each day with a rousing song about The Great Beyond and the gods, each putting their own spin on it (i.e., the German mustard adds a line about exterminating Juice). For Frank, it’s all about paradise and the chance to match with his soul mate, Brenda (Kristen Wiig), a sexy hot dog bun with Barbie legs and a desire equal to Frank’s. They’re waiting for the gods to choose them before they act on anything. Things go awry when they are chosen. A jar of Honey Mustard (Danny McBride) that was returned to the store by a customer

is so traumatized by what he’s seen “out there” that he jumps out of the cart to his death. A few follow him out of their packages to try to save him and get tossed from the cart, including Brenda, Frank, Sammy Bagel Jr. (Edward Norton), Lavash (David Krumholtz) and a Douche (Nick Kroll). A nd that group goes off

exploring — some trying to get back to the store, some searching for the truth, and some (the Jewish bagel and Middle Eastern flatbread) waxing philosophical on the nature of belief. Those that made it to The Great Beyond, including Frank’s hot dog buddy Barry (Michael Cera), experience the horrors of dinnertime. And then there’s the food orgy. Words can’t even begin to do this sequence justice, but you’ve never seen anything like it in a mainstream studio movie. It’s jaw-dropping. As with all Rogen-Goldberg films, no matter how raunchy, there’s a big heart at the center. Anything goes, but it’s rooted in something deeper and infinitely more earnest. LINDSEY BAHR (AP)

Rihanna will be presented with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. The singer, whose hits include “Umbrella” and “We Found Love,” has previously won two VMAs for video of the year and is nominated four times this year, with two nods each for “Work” and “This Is What You Came For.” The awards will be broadcast live from Madison Square Garden on Aug. 28. (EXPRESS) New show “Star Trek: Discovery” will have a female lead but she won’t be a captain, says executive producer Bryan Fuller

Sixty years old and less than 5 feet tall, singer Sharon Jones is no typical frontwoman, and she spends most of the documentary “Miss Sharon Jones!” without any hair, the result of cancer treatment. Jones’ fans are already hip to her dynamic live shows, but director Barbara Kopple’s film — which explores but never exploits Jones’ illness — will create new converts. ALAN ZILBERMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Equity’ R, 100 min.

“Equity,” a drama about female executives navigating sexism on Wall Street, has received lots of attention for being a movie written, directed and produced by women that also stars women. “Equity” feels ham-handed and obvious, but it’s an intriguing attempt at rebalancing a system that’s been dreadfully out of whack for far too long. CBS: ‘We need to do better’

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Really necessary: There be dragons, and there be hope I didn’t expect Disney’s new “Pete’s Dragon” to replace the old one, the one my sister and I videotaped off “The Wonderful World of Disney” and played so often that we knew exactly at what point during the fast-forwarded Jhoon Rhee commercial (“Nobody bothers me!”) we should hit “play” so we didn’t overshoot the mark and have to rewind. I knew going in that the new “Pete’s Dragon” wasn’t a musical, but I assumed it would hit the same basic plot points. Aside from “boy named Pete” and “dragon,” I was entirely wrong. It’s not the same movie; it’s superior on every level imaginable. The first version was a movie for children; this is a movie about being a child. Pete (Oakes Fegley) faces unfathomable trauma in the film’s first scene — his parents die

in a car accident (the event is handled with a sensitive grace by director David Lowery), leaving the 5-year-old alone in the woods, crying as wolves surround him. Then, out of the shadows, Elliot appears. Elliot is a dragon, and Elliot is real. “Pete’s Dragon” pushes this point: Dragons. Are. Real. And of course they are — the only thing strong enough to protect a 5-year-old boy from the unimaginable circumstances of being utterly abandoned is something that everyone thought was imaginary. Facing fear requires that we call upon

‘Pete’s Dragon’ (PG, 102 min.) DIRECTOR: David Lowery STARS: Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley IN A NUTSHELL: Disney revisits the story of Pete, a 10-year-old with no family who claims to have a giant dragon as a friend.

something greater than that fear: You always bring a dragon to a wolf fight. Of course, those of us who live in this world don’t get Elliots, no matter how much more interesting they would make our commutes. Children and the best stories about them possess an odd but sensible logic: If the world we live in contains powerful cruelty, it must also contain powerful hope. It is not always seen (Elliot is sometimes invisible), but it is always there. And kids believe in those symbols of hope right up until we tell them they don’t exist. It’s just that we too often forget to clarify that, while there is no Superman, what Superman stands for is very real. “Pete’s Dragon” is about a belief that things will be OK. And what else do we tell our children after every skinned knee, every lost game, every heartbreak? The thing is, we adults don’t tell ourselves that often enough; “Pete’s Dragon” tells us that not only is it fine to believe that everything will turn out all right, it is vital that we do so. Our real-life Elliots may be friends or family or religion or just blatant optimism in a world fueled by negativity. Whatever form our hopes take isn’t important. What is important is remembering that they are real, and they are present, and they are powerful.

CW’s “Supergirl” and “The Flash” to air two musical crossover episodes this season

When CBS announced its 2016 fall TV schedule a few months ago, the lack of diversity was glaringly obvious: All six new shows are led by white male actors. CBS executives came face to face with critics Wednesday during a Q&A session at the 2016 Television Critics’ Association press tour. The first question dove right in: “You still have no people of color as the leads in your new fall shows. Why is it so difficult to get more inclusion for people of color in the top level of casting at CBS?” one reporter asked. CBS president Glenn Geller, below, admitted that when it comes to lead characters, the network is “definitely less diverse” than last year. “We’re very mindful at CBS about the importance of diversity,” Geller added. “We need to do better and we know it. That’s really it.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Florence’ sings a sweet song Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant share a moment in “Florence Foster Jenkins.”

PARAMOUNT PICTURES

FILM REVIEW Meryl Streep steps up to the plate with another cheerfully game performance in “Florence Foster Jenkins,” a warm, generous-hearted portrait of the title character: a wealthy music aficionado who, in real life, became a cult figure in the 1930s and ’40s with her earnest, wildly off-key singing. “Florence Foster Jenkins” chronicles the final year of Jenkins’ life, opening with a tableau vivant at the New York arts club she founded and following the preparations for her infamous performance at Carnegie Hall in 1944 — a boisterous affair attended by rowdy sailors, camp followers, sundry gawkers and the likes of Cole Porter and Lily Pons. Streep does a pitch-perfect imitation of a tone-deaf diva, donning copious padding and a slightly askew wig to play a dotty dilettante who becomes a heroic avatar for sincerity and well-meaning amateurism in spite of cruel, persnickety critics. Music lovers — indeed, anyone who admires discipline, virtuosity and intellectual

self-awareness — may chafe at that aesthetic calculation. But even with that troubling question nipping at its heels, “Florence Foster Jenkins” manages to be tender and surprisingly affecting. Nowhere is that truer than in her curious relationship with her young manager and commonlaw husband, St. Clair Bayfield, portrayed by Hugh Grant with his signature ingratiating charm and, ultimately, admirable steel. Part of the mystery of “Florence Foster Jenkins” is whether St. Clair is yet another user in

rarely wins laughs at the title character’s expense. Most of the humor comes by way of Simon Helberg, as Florence’s accompanist, and Nina Arianda, as a tough-talking showgirl who leaves her first Jenkins recital in fits of uncontrollable laughter, but eventually becomes a fan. Directed by Stephen Frears in a series of handsomely composed frames reminiscent of Woody Allen at his most ambered and gently affectionate, “Florence Foster Jenkins” brims with love for its characters and forbearance for even their most blinkered self-deception. Like Jenkins herself, the filmmakers abhor sharp and pointed things, preferring soft edges and tact. (Their suggestion that her poor pitch might have been the result of her long-term syphilis is handled with discretion.) And, like her, they share the belief that music should be an act of spiritual connection rather than technical rigor or talent. Even when her notes are intolerably sour, Jenkins’ story is never less than touchingly bittersweet.

The week’s best movie previews

‘Bad Santa 2’

‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Nov. 23

EXPECTED RELEASE: Jan. 27

SUMMARY: It’s been 13 years since Billy Bob Thornton, left, put the expletives in “Merry Christmas,” and here we are again. Willie is back in the suit and is here to bring cursing, sex, cursing and drinking to the Yuletide season. It’s just like a regular family Christmas, with fewer questions about why you’re not married yet.

SUMMARY: Apparently we’re still making “Resident Evil” movies? So there’s a hidden government lab, and of course they’ve got this super-powerful virus, and of course something goes wrong, and then Milla Jovovich, left, has to save the world by running around in a tank top and kicking a (presumably evil) dog thing. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Something long awaited may finally arrive, but you are not likely to be satisfied. There is something missing, and you know what it is. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’ll want to explore all of your options, especially when it comes to a partnership that is only now in its infancy. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You have more time available than you had originally thought. Use it to your advantage, and be more creative than usual. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You needn’t do things in a routine way. Focus on methods that give you a bit of a buzz, and you’ll have the advantage.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’re keenly aware of what the competition is doing, but you may not know exactly why. Observe all maneuvers with great care.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’ll want to settle down to work as early as you can. Don’t let anything pass you by that might enrich your perspective. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may feel trapped by circumstances, but at least you can say that what is happening is not at all your fault. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’re nearing the end of a highly creative phase during which you worked with a great many interesting people. Is it time to move on?

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Pop and hip-hop producer Timbaland will create new songs for STRONG by Zumba, a non-dance workout that focuses on high-intensity interval training, bodyweight exercises and strength training paired with music. The songs will be used by instructors during training sessions. Timbaland says his music is designed to help people get through workouts with more ease and inspire people to push their limits at the gym. Timbaland said he’s never taken a Zumba class. “I try to find all different types of avenues to express my talent when it comes to music,” he said. (AP)
