THE EXTERY STORY A million different stories interact and intertwine in the urban environment every day. A star-crossed lover awaits her Romeo in a park; old friends set the world to rights on a street corner; a girl walks her dog beside a duck pond; kids run about on a beach with shrieks of delight; an old man stares longingly into the distance from a pier. We don’t know how these stories
started, or where they’re headed – but we do know that together they form a rich and fascinating environment. EXTERY inhabits that space, creating collections that give life free rein in the urban environment, that engender pleasure and satisfaction, and that are naturally inconspicuous and perfectly eye-catching at one and the same time. Simple, comfortable and harmonious.
EMOTIONAL AND RATIONAL Our products are built to last. They have to withstand rain and snow, the beating sun and snap freezes, year in, year out. They live alongside people – couples on benches, children playing on climbing frames, workers peddling furiously to get to the office on time, teens on skateboards – from one day to the next. They are suited to their environment, whether that be a cobbled street in the Old Town, a wooded park in a new residential district, the banks of a river or the entranceway to a shopping centre. Today and tomorrow. Our designers and engineers create beautiful products that meet all of these demands and are clearly thought through to the tiniest detail. In doing so, they make our lives just that little bit more comfortable and urban space a more enjoyable place to be.
The materials we use and the production technology we employ are both economical and environmentally friendly. We eschew the use of tropical timber and other vulnerable resources. It’s important to us that creating a better environment today is not done at the cost of the future. Our products take into account everyone who lives in a city, regardless of age, and irrespective of whether they’ll be the ones primarily using them or looking a#er them. Ensuring that the streets are clean takes far more than just installing some rubbish bins on footpaths. Taking care of them and making sure that emptying them is a simple process are just as important as an elegant solution. That’s the only way you can guarantee an urban space that is polished, functional and high-quality.

ASH WOOD AND LARCH What gives a product that perfect polish is clever details and thoughtful choice of materials. Our benches are made from glue-laminated larch and thermotreated ash wood. The Siberian larch is known as the ‘tree of eternity’ and has been used for centuries in the construction of durable and exacting buildings. What gives larch its unique resilience to weather conditions is its unusually high resin content, which protects it against both damp and pests. The thermo-treatment of timber is an unparalleled method of processing during which the wood is heated to a temperature of 210 °C. This changes the structure of the wood cell without the addition of any chemical agents. Moisture, bacteria and acids are drawn out of the wood, rendering the nutrient-depleted timber unsuitable as a breeding ground for fungal blight such as wood-rot and mildew. Thermal processing ensures the long shelf life of the finished product and the stability of its measurements. It also gives the ash wood a lovely chocolate tone. That’s why we’ve chosen glue-laminated larch and thermo-treated ash wood for our range of benches.
