hether in the countryside or in urban areas, Extremadura offers one of the best destinations in Europe for bird watching. And not only in spring but throughout the year, a feature that differentiates it from other places. The evidence? 74.1% of Extremadura’s surface area is included in the inventory of Important Bird Areas, which is exceptional in Spain and Europe. An impressive 369 bird species have been recorded. There are more than 50 protected areas, including Monfragüe, Tajo Internacional and the Sierra de San Pedro, key areas for the conservation of some of the most endangered species on the continent, such as Spanish Imperial Eagle, Black Stork, Egyptian Vulture and Cinerous Vulture.
And there are more than 70 Special Protection Areas for Birds
(SPAs), of which 23 are located in urban environments such as Cáceres, Trujillo, Plasencia, the Badajoz weir, Almendralejo, Zafra and Jerez de los Caballeros.
With these natural resources, Extremadura has specialized in welcoming, and providing services for, national and international tourists who are interested in birds, insects and botany, without neglecting aspects such as culture, historical heritage and gastronomy.
Places to stay, professional guides, activity companies, travel agencies, interpretation centres and tourist offices from across the region have come together in the Birding in Extremadura Club, a pioneering initiative in Spain and an example of public-private collaboration that works to promote birding tourism and offer quality customer services.

Godfried Schreur, promoter of the ECOTUREX company, was one of the first professional guides specialized in birding in the region. He has led dozens of nature tours in Extremadura, sometimes in combination with Coto Doñana and Sierra de Gredos. Godfried is a friendly guide who finds great satisfaction in sharing his wide knowledge and extensive experience with people. He understands the geography of Extremadura and other areas good for wildlife in Spain. he hide with spy glass with drinking pool located in the Sierra del Castillo de Monesterio (Badajoz), installed in 2021, has capacity for three seated photographers with their tripods and cameras. It is located in an ecotone with a great variety of plants and fauna, within a private nature reserve of 3.5 hectares. Up to April 2024, 66 species of birds have been observed. On the same plot is the Casa Rural Siquem, which can sometimes be rented together with the hide, although the most common thing is to rent the hide exclusively. HIDE EL VENERO DE LOS RABILARGOS

This protected site is an old iron mine of Roman origin that was worked right through until 1921. Since the abandonment of mining work, it has been transformed into a natural oasis where flora, fauna, geology, mining and ethnographic heritage come together. In this place, environmental education and conservation activities are carried out on the natural and historical mining heritage. We carry out guided tours, conferences, workshops and everything necessary to highlight the richness of this jewel in the south of the province of Badajoz, on the mountain edge of the Southern Campiña.

The interpretation centre of the Cornalvo Natural Park is located in the Dehesa Boyal de Trujillanos. It has five thematic rooms, where through panels, models and audiovisuals it interprets the cultural, historical and natural values of the protected area.
In addition, it has environmental monitors to assist visitors and inform them about all aspects related to the place and its surroundings. A visit here is recommended before entering the Park.
t is located next to the Turrón Museum and integrated into the La Serena Nature Interpretation Centre. Specialized staff will offer you advice and tourist information about Extremadura in general and the La Serena region in particular, regarding accommodation, tourist activities, fairs and festivals, crafts and gastronomy.

he Nature Interpretation Centre is recommended stop before visiting the “Sierra Grande de Hornachos”. You will be able to learn about the different species of birds, with special emphasis on the majority of birds of prey that can be seen in the Sierra Grande de Hornachos. It has an audiovisual section of photo trapping, to discover nocturnal mammals. In addition, guided maps of the main hiking routes in the Sierra Grande are offered.

C.I. ZONA DE INTERÉS REGIONAL SIERRA GRANDE DE HORNACHOS
Located in the town of Cachorrilla. It has two rooms, one dedicated to the projection of audiovisuals, holding workshops, courses or conferences and the other houses the thematic exhibition. The visitor discovers, through the interactive topographic model and panels; the Canchos de Ramiro and Ladronera SPA and its diversity of flora and fauna, especially its birdlife.
01 Guided tours are organized from the centre, two eco-itineraries that run through the protected area, Canchos de Ramiro and Aceña del Tío Jeromo.
The Interpretation Centre, a former shepherd’s house, is located about 3km from Casar de Cáceres, next to the Soriana Occidental Drovers’ Trail and the reservoir that supplies the town’s water. In the centre the pastoral culture, transhumance and livestock routes are shown, as well as the ‘secrets’ of the artisanal production of Torta del Casar. At the top it has an observatory terrace over the body of water for watching the birds nearby.

Orchydarium is a contemporary interpretation centre, where you can enjoy and learn about the universe of orchids. Equipped with interactive exhibition resources, you will discover botanical aspects of the flower and curiosities of this plant, in a space structured around the Almaraz orchids. Outside, you will find the greenhouse, a place to learn about interesting plants and where workshops and other environmental educational activities take place. In addition, you will be able to visit the Sierro, declared a SCI (place of scientific interest) and the “Dehesa Camadilla” Peri-urban Conservation and Leisure Park, within aa SPA.

IInterpretation centre of the International Tagus in which we inform tourists about the nature of the Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve through different information panels, videos and other interactive elements. The visit is divided into 3 parts:
- An explanation at the reception of the IC.
- A projection with images of the International Tagus with a duration of 18 minutes.
- Visit to the exhibition room where the interactive museum is located, with touch screens, audiovisual model, sound, trivia game, etc.
The Garganta de los Infiernos is located in the Jerte Valley region, between the northwest slope of the Sierra de Tormantos, the southwest slope of the Sierra de Gredos and the Jerte River. It was declared a Natural Reserve (1994) due to the important ecological value of its montane ecosystems (riparian forest, deciduous forest and high mountains). Water plays an important role in maintaining the balance between the different ecosystems, hence the importance of the water network... To better understand this area, we can visit the two Interpretation Centres and take one of the recommended routes.

Almendralejo, and especially its popular church, has established itself as one of the best “cradles” of the Lesser Kestrel, a small falcon classified as “vulnerable”, and became the first Special Protection Area for the Urban birds (within the Natura 2000 Network) in Europe.

It was during its Portuguese period when the fine fortified town was built, full of white houses, buildings with arcades with Manueline touches and cobblestone floors, which since 2019 has been considered one of the Most Beautiful Towns in Spain.

Inform and advise the visitor in planning their trip to Alcántara, to the Tajo International Biosphere Reserve, on hiking routes, cycle paths, bird watching, star-gazing, boat trips, fishing and water activities in the Alcántara reservoir, interpretation centres and nature... the cultural heritage is another of its greatest attractions, declared a BIC historical site, with monuments such as: the Roman bridge, the Convent of San Benito, the church of Santa María de Almocóvar, town walls, palatial houses, the Jewish quarter and its medieval streets make Alcántara one of the most visited towns in Extremadura.

Tourist office located in the town of Saucedilla, which offers free guided routes (as long as you reserve in advance), environmental awareness work with schools in the area. Great variety of birds (marsh, aquatic, steppe and wading birds) to observe in every season of the year, spring being the best option. From March, you can visit the Lesser Kestrel colony located in the town church, on the orange route.

CÁCERES
Cáceres is one of the most important urban enclaves in Spain for birding, with three Special Bird Protection Areas (SPA). Walking through its streets, on the towers of its walls and palaces or among the vegetation of parks and gardens, we will discover a numerous and varied community of birds that are easy to observe and with great beauty, such as White Stork or Lesser Kestrel. Surrounded by protected areas, forests, dehesas and traditional farming areas, it is one of the few cities of its size that still attract numerous species to its parks and suburban areas, among which birds of prey and steppe species of interest stand out.
