The Locked Door !
In a huge mansion, just across the border of Birmingham, lived a small family, a young couple with one kid. The young couple was white, but they respected Africans-Americans, so the father, Aaron, drove to Birmingham to help stop segregation. So usually Lucy, the mother, would stay alone at home with her AfricanAmerican helper, May. ! Aaron and Lucyʼs little 9 year old son, Harry, went to the best private white school in Birmingham and he would learn at school that doing anything bad to African - Americans, was good. But of-course, his parents disagreed with this. ! On the first day of December, Lucy sat on her fabulous grey sofa and watched May clean her house. She couldnʼt understand how she survived, so poor, with ten children! Lucy thought that there could be some way to help May, there had to be. She stood up as she thought of her idea. ! “May, you have ten children, right?” asked Lucy. ! ! “Yes, maʼam” replied May. ! ! ! “What about your sweet Marold comes to play with my dear Harry?” asked Lucy. ! “Why, that would be amazing! Iʼll arrange my dear little Marold to come,” said May and turned around to go and get Marold. “Oh, Marold do you want a friend! Come on dear, I arranged you a friend!” Lucy felt incredibly proud helping May, after seeing how happy her son was. ! Harry came home one day, and when he was writing a letter to his faraway friend, he heard a polite knock on his door. knock. So, he opened the door and saw an African-American 7-year-old smiling and waving in his doorway. ! “Mommy! Who is this? And what is he wearing?” shouted Harry ! “Aw, my poor little Harry is scared,” awed Lucy, but then she heard the little child screaming and running into the living-room. “What happened? Is everything alright?” she asked, confused. ! “Your young son, Harry, is making fun of my clothes, and me! He says Iʼm mean even though I didnʼt say a word! I tried talking to him but he shut the door in my face. And, my name is Marold, Mrs. Henry.” ! On the following days Lucy tried to convince Harry that Marold was a nice kid. ! “But mom, Marold wears all these strange clothes and he is very mean to me!” complained Harry to Lucy. ! “Oh, no! Do not dare lie to me, he told me what happened, you laughed at his clothes and shut your room door in his face!” ! While Harry laid on his bed he overheard his mother talking on the house phone with his dad and calmly saying, “Tomorrow night is New Yearʼs Eve, will you be home in time for 1958?” ! Then she waited a minute and said in a sad voice, “Come home whenever you can, okay? But remember, help save the nice African Americans.” ! After the call Lucy went into Harryʼs room “Iʼm so sorry darling, daddy canʼt come, not until March. You see, your daddy is working to prevent segregation, do you know what that means?” Lucy asked. ! Harry shrugged, because he really didnʼt care But when Lucy started to explain what segregation means to Harry, he furiously ran out of his room. ʻOh, so now dad is against me? Yea? Thatʼs how itʼll work?ʼ Harry said to himself. ! “I will say this very calmly, come to your room now! Oh, and Marold is coming today” screamed Lucy, and stomped away. ! Later that same day Marold was playing all by himself in the living room when he heard a scream from the direction of Harryʼs room. ! “What happened, Harry?” asked Marold, running to the direction of Harryʼs room. ! “Where is my mom?” exclaimed Harry “I want my old mom!” ! “She went grocery shopping,” then Marold tried opening the door, “Are you locked?” ! “Yes, okay! After a while of waiting, and a while of screaming, Lucy finally came back home. ! “Oh, thank god that you are back Mrs. Henry,” said Marold to Lucy, “Harry is locked in his room”!! ! ! ! “Oh, my poor Harry!” exclaimed Lucy, “Are you all right?” ! “Oh, mom! Just be quiet and open my door!” sneered Harry. ! Lucy frowned at her childʼs behavior and tried to open the door. Everyone tried, Lucy, all of their neighbors, and even Lucyʼs helper, May (although Harry didnʼt want her to). Suddenly May remembered that the person that was extraordinary with locks, was Marold. ! “No! Donʼt dare try open my door,” Harry started, but suddenly stopped when his mother asked “Harry, do you want to get out?” ! “Yes mom.” ! ! “So, let Marold try open your door.” ! ! ! “NEVER!!!” ! “Go and try unlocking Harryʼs door” said Lucy and then nodded at Marold who went and tried to open the door. ! After many times of trying, Marold finally opened the door and surprisingly Harry writing ʻMEAN MAROLDʼ on a piece of paper, Marold ran out furious. ! The next day, Harry felt really bad, and finally, he invited Marold into his room. He said “Iʼm sorry, letʼs play together, and thanks for being so nice,” said Harry with a shy smile. Then, confidently, Marold hugged Harry. ! One year later Harry confidently stepped into his classroom and announced to all his teachers and classmates “People, you guys are all mean, treating African-Americans like this! My mom and dad will sue you all when this is over!” ! Now, Harry and Marold are best friends! ! ! The End! No,! thatʼs not the end, yet. Harry and Marold are still trying to stop segregation all over the world until this very day!
