Virus is a picnic table in various guises. Dirk Wynants has designed different versions based on an identical seating frame for two to five

people. This is a fun way of filling a space with a mixture of small to medium-sized seating sets without losing uniformity.

Virus for residential use

What is more, the compact design responds to the trend for smaller living spaces, offering a solution that enables you to use our tools on balconies and in urban gardens. Virus requires only the exact space that is needed for a company of 2 / 3 / 4 or 5 people.

The identical seating frame is configured around a tabletop that fits exactly what you need for a simple lunch or breakfast. Nothing more, nothing less. There, too, is an ideal Virus table for every gathering. So expect nothing less than togetherness everywhere!

Saison Tremist, the new Extremis farmhouse ale, now available!

The ‘Saison’ or ‘Belgian farmhouse ale’ originates from the time that farmers brewed beer in less active months and stored it until seasonal workers doubled the countryside’s

population during Summer, especially in the south of Belgium. Saison Tremist is a refreshing bottle conditioned brew with hops from Extremis’ backyard in Poperinge.

Extremis’ Picnik celebrates its 15th anniversary! 15 years ago, Dirk Wynants took up the challenge to give people the feeling of space despite the trend towards smaller and compacter living. As he experienced urban life, he discovered how many citydwellers (mainly couples)

lived in apartments with a small terrace, and he came up with an innovative design that could make efficient and functional use of the space available. The Picnik was born.

Happy birthday Picnik!

Optimal material use The basic shape is exactly half the size of a standard 3 x 1.5 metre aluminium sheet. Apart from the saw cuts and the minimal rounding off, material wastage is nil. Most of Dirk Wynants’ pieces are designed to minimise material wastage. Picnik comes closest to this theoretical ideal.

Every aspect of Picnik’s shape is based on a functional need. The rounded surfaces are necessary to increase its strength; the sloping feet are necessary to enable the tables to be stacked. This last factor is essential for transport and storage.

With seven prizes and counting, it is hardly surprising that the Picnik is considered a style icon in design history.

Enhancing conversations Most of the people who like design live in big cities. But city dwellers do not usually have much outdoor space. He decided to design a small, compact “Tool for Togetherness” for two people. This also led to his discovering a sociological reality: the two person family is currently the most common family unit!
