Our name says it all Praescius /prae-see-us/ is Latin for ‘having forethought’ or as we like to think of it, planning to know in advance. That’s what we do. We help others to plan for their future today. But it’s more than that. For us, it’s about empowering people to live the life they want, by ensuring they get the advice they need.

Guiding you to financial independence starts with taking an open, honest and in-depth look at your life today, understanding the choices you’ll need to make in the future and how this will influence the goals you seek to achieve.

You may have heard the saying, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

Once we’ve identified your goals, we’ll look to build a deeper understanding of your finances. For example, any existing loans or assets such as shares or an investment property that you may hold, right through to your super fund and insurances.

This will enable us to define the scope of advice you’ll need.

Think of your first meeting with us as laying the foundations for your future – an opportunity for you to talk, us to listen and in questioning, reveal a clear set of specific and targeted goals.

We know the thought of wading through your paperwork is probably as appealing as getting your tax done, so providing you grant us authorisation to access your details, we’ll liaise directly with each individual provider to gather the information for you.

After completing your plan, we’ll provide you with a formal Statement of Advice and arrange a time to discuss it in person. This allows us to confirm it meets both your needs and expectations.

From here on in, it’s all action as we start to implement your plan for you. The steps at this stage will be dependent on the strategies we’ve chosen to apply and may involve us working together with our industry partners – for example fund managers, accountants, mortgage brokers or solicitors.

One of our firmly held beliefs is that you can’t set and forget a strategy. So once everything is in place, we’ll contact you periodically to arrange a time to ‘reflect and review’. And if life changes in between, well then it’s time to pick up the phone and book an appointment with your financial planner.


Strategy in action Question I’m hoping to retire but am worried how long my money will last? What strategies can I adopt at this stage to ensure I can meet my needs throughout retirement?

Question I’m currently paying off my home loan, but don’t have any other assets working to create wealth. I worry that if I focus on my home loan alone, I’m not allowing myself time to secure any high growth, long-term investments. Is there a way I can do both?

The best way to prepare for your retirement is to understand the relationship between your goals and your timeframe for achieving them. This will enable us to ensure the capital you have is invested correctly for you.

Securing assets while decreasing non-tax deductible debt - commonly referred to as ‘bad’ debt - can be achieved through what’s known as a debt recycling strategy.

We’ll identify if your goals are realistic STEP or whether alternative goals should be set.

STEP We’ll ensure your investment portfolio is structured correctly. At Praescius we use three distinct buckets to construct portfolios. Each has been designed with the characteristics required to support different time horizons – short, medium and long-term. The short term bucket, for example, provides greater security but will produce lower returns than the long-term bucket. In retirement, it’s important to get the mix right.

HOW IT WORKS

STEP We’ll review your home loan to ensure it has all the features that will enable you to redraw from your home loan for the purposes of investing. Our industry partners will help assess if you are getting the best interest rate and value from your home loan. STEP We’ll review your budget to identify any surplus cash you can regularly contribute to your loan. As you continue to build equity in your home, we’ll redraw this to invest in a diversified portfolio of assets designed to provide regular distributions and tax benefits.

All income and tax benefits that are STEP generated from the investment are used to repay your home loan sooner. Over time, the non-deducible (bad) debt is converted to deductible (good) debt, achieving your goal to simultaneously repay your home loan sooner, and build wealth for your future.
