Here we are at the end of another beautiful summer!
Anyone else get a bit sad at the end of summer? Maybe it’s just me, but I have truly enjoyed my extra time spent with grandkids and friends and family these past few months.
Lots of hot sunshiny days spent cooling off in the water and enjoying family time and friends, kids sleeping in, baseball and softball games and time at the beaches.
Now that it’s time for kids to be back
in school and routines to return to routine. I don’t know about y’all but I’m going to try to eek out every drop of warm days we have left and make the weekends just as memorable as the summer days before we are looking at forecasts of cold weather.
Maybe we will plan a picnic by the river or cookout in the backyard before I am ready to say farewell to the warmth of the sunshine.
Get out and soak up some sun!

Daisy Patch Quilters
Gina SlagleyWater’s Edge Magazine recently connected with a local club/organization of avid quilters who meet at Hope Lutheran Church on the second Wednesday of the month from 10 to noon.
The group donates their talents to local organizations for various fundraising events and community outreach. Their artistry and passion is displayed in each stitch while keeping a worthy art form alive.
(WE): When did the Daisy Patch Quilters group form?
(DPQ): Daisy Patch Quilters started in the spring of 1998, 25years ago by Jean Beisenstein and Margaret Cartstens. Jean is still an active member today.
What is the group’s main focus?
The group has two missions. One goal has always been to provide community support. Daisy Patch Quilters have supplied quilts, blankets, bags and pillowcases to various local organizations including The Call of Cleburne County and the Arkansas Sheriff’s Youth Ranch, who support foster families and children, Margie’s Haven House and The Community School. The club has also been a member of Quilts of Valor Foundation, a national organization whose mission is to wrap servicemen who have experienced combat in a comforting quilt to let them know their service has not been forgotten. Daisy Patch also supports the Cleburne County Fair and encourages all members to enter projects and participate in fair-activities. Members have contributed to National Quilting Day activities, the Literacy Council fundraising and local Quilt Shows.
The second mission is to encourage, teach, inspire, and applaud all members and guests quilting, sewing, and creating efforts. There is a lot to learn to create a meaningful quilt. Daisy Patch members offer help and information to anyone who asks. The club has members at all levels of experience from beginners to craftsmen. Fellowship and comradery are part of every monthly meeting. The club has two quilting retreats a year which provide opportunities for uninterrupted sewing, quilting and fun for 3 days. Members have made lifelong friends through the club. Members are from Tumbling Shoals, Wilburn, Shirley,
Clinton, Quitman, Batesville, Mt. View, as well as Heber Springs.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of taking up quilting as a hobby?
As a newbie myself, my first advice is to come to the Daisy Patch meetings and get involved and inspired. Next, get a sewing machine that sews a good, consistent stitch with a ¼” foot attachment, a rotary cutter and a ruler. Then, plan to ignore all your other hobbies and chores. Quilting can become addictive!
What is one of the most stand out moments the group has accomplished?
A few years ago, preCovid, the Daisy Patch Quilters organized a large presentation of patriotic quilts to be presented to local war veterans at the Veterans Day Memorial Ceremony held on the grounds of the courthouse. Ten or twelve veterans and their families were honored that day for their service and sacrifice.
Daisy Patch Quilters have organized a couple of bus trips and invited other area quilting groups. One trip was to the Missouri Star shop in Hamilton, MO and another shop hop trip to Central AR quilt stores.
The quilters also welcome any visitors that might want to drop in to join their monthly meeting.
The history of the club has been preserved in beautiful scrapbooks which have recently been moved to the Cleburne County Library History collection. They are available to view in the History Room.

I served 10 years in the military before becoming an officer at the Heber Springs Police Department. I’ve always wanted to help out.
How do you remain calm in difficult situations?

What are three qualities that you think would make a great police officer?
Patience. Lack of an ego. The ability to care for others more than yourself.
Tell me a little bit about your family.
I grew up in Heber Springs my whole life. I’m married with one daughter.
What got you interested in this line of work?
I became interested because it allowed me to give something back to the community.
What do you find most rewarding about being a firefighter?
The most rewarding part would be helping others.
What do you find most challenging about the job?
The most challenging would be having to adapt to a new situation on each scene. No two are alike.
