Bonfire Night Party! Remember Remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, Treason and Plot I see no reason why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot
BONFIRE TREATS Bonfire Night is the perfect opportunity to make the most of comfort food! Food like tomato soup and sausages that will satisfy hungry mouths on a cold wintery night. Simple ideas like sausage on a stick, mini hot dogs, bowls of soup and big slabs of rocky road or the season’s favourite toffee apples are easy to prepare for a night beside the bonfire. If you have some barbecue sticks left over from the summer then pop a few marshmallows on them to toast on the bonfire.
Bonfire Night is all about wrapping up all cosy and warm with your hats, scarves, gloves and your sparklers at the ready! If you’re thinking of holding your own Bonfire Night Party in your back garden then you need to have a few tricks up your sleeve to throw the best bonfire party ever. Here are a few simple ideas for you to try out!
KEEP A SPACE FOR THE LITTLE ONES Young children often are frightened by the loud bangs and explosions, especially if they are outside watching them. If you have a room in your home that is overlooking the garden then make this room into a cosy and warm snug where they can sit and watch the fireworks without getting scared. To keep them entertained while waiting for the fireworks, you could set up a crafts area to make glittery firework pictures on black paper.
GETTING STARTED The fireworks you choose for a Bonfire Night party should be a good mix of colourful, noisy and effective fireworks to celebrate Guy Fawkes in style. Sparklers are the best place to start and are fun for everyone to get involved. Make sure you have a bucket filled with sand or water so that you can stub them out when they have burned out and that everyone is wearing thick gloves to protect hands from the sparks. Choose a good selection of ground based fireworks like fountains and Catherine Wheels which are easy to use and are effective. Bigger fireworks like Rockets, Roman Candles, Cakes and Set Pieces often explode with bright colours and loud bangs ideal for Bonfire Night and will leave your friends and family in awe of the display you’ve put on.
THE AFTER PARTY When the fireworks are over and the Bonfire is happily burning away with its warm glow, gather up the remainders of the fireworks and discard them in a bin. Don’t be tempted to throw them on the bonfire or bury them as they need to be discarded in a safe way. If some of your fireworks didn’t go off as expected, then leave them a good half hour before picking them up. Wear thick leather gloves at all times and hold the fireworks at arms length just as a safety precaution, and place them in water.
PREPARING YOUR BONFIRE If you want your bonfire to burn well into the night, then you need to build it like a pro! Find a sheltered spot in the garden that is away from trees and bushes and check for any signs of hedgehogs too. Dig a shallow hole a few feet wide, and then lay some large stones or bricks around the edge of the hole. Fill the centre with dry grass, old newspapers, bark or twigs which will give your bonfire a good base on which to light. Now you can start to build your bonfire with the kindling and larger logs to help it burn all night.

REMEMBER REMEMBER! Fireworks are dangerous explosives and must be used with the greatest care and attention given. You can read up on your firework safety on the Directgov website.

Staying Warm this Winter The colder winter months is probably not everyone’s cup of tea, especially with the longer nights and the freezing cold weather. The drop in temperature means that we have to find ways to keep ourselves warm to ward off illnesses. But with a few simple changes to your daily routine and your home, you can stay warm and healthy this winter.
PREPARING YOURSELF FOR WINTER All it takes is a few health preparations to ensure that you are ready and fighting fit for the winter. If you are over the age of 65, have a serious medical condition, have breathing difficulties like asthma or are pregnant then you are eligible to receive a free flu jab in your surgery. Other than that, keep your medicine cupboard well stocked with decongestants, painkillers, cold and flu tablets and medicines to make sure you are ready when the colds and flu come at you.
PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR WINTER A few simple checks can mean the difference between a warm home and a very cold one. Have your heating system checked and serviced before it starts to get too cold. One of the worst thing that could happen in a snowstorm is that your heating cuts out so it’s best to have it checked over before hand.
Keep some basic foods in your kitchen just incase you are unable to get to the shops. If you have large enough freezer space, then it’s always handy to keep a loaf of bread and a spare bottle of milk in there as they are easy to defrost and last a long time when frozen.
If any unexpected problems occur with your heating system then electric heaters come in very handy during the winter and can warm up rooms very effectively. Investing in an electric blanket can also make a huge difference.
When it is cold outside, it’s important that you eat healthily and keep moving.Soups and broths will provide you with instant heat and will also give you all the vitamins and nutrients you need to aid your body in fighting against harmful viruses. Try to have at least one hot meal a day and include a good balance of vegetables, meats and carbohydrates which will provide you with extra warmth.
Take a look over your boiler and see if the flame is burning blue. If it isn’t and it’s resembling a flickering orange flame then contact your gas company to check over it. Have a look around your home to see if there are any unnecessary drafts coming from doors or windows. The winter often means that winds will pick up and the weather is likely to worsen so any gaps or cracks between doors or windows need to be sealed up and fixed before the cold weather sets in. Set aside a day to bleed out your radiators so that they are in full working order for the winter.
Visit www.bedminstereye.co.uk
When you leave the warmth of your home, make sure that you wear the appropriate layers of clothing to keep you warm. If necessary wear thermal underwear and keep your head covered with a hat or scarf. Wear sensible shoes with nice warm socks to keep your toes warm.

Driving in Heavy Rain Driving in heavy rain and flooding can be very hazardous. Breakdown companies are always busy during periods of wet weather, and report that there is an increase in customers complaining of problems with car engines and electrical systems especially in older vehicles. Many of these rain-related breakdowns are easily avoided if you follow some of our helpful steps you can take to reduce your chances of an accident or breakdown.
drivers behind you. Reduce your speed and leave space between your car and the car in front of you. Your brakes will be compromised with the wet and slippery roads. Be wary of larger or fast moving vehicles as they can produce a lot of extra spray. Tune in to your local radio station as they will have regular updates on conditions and flooded areas to avoid. If you do happen to break down, keep your bonnet closed as the water may damage your electrical system. Avoid driving fast through deep water on the road as this can damage your breaks. Be considerate to other drivers.
BEFORE SETTING OFF: Consider whether your journey is essential. If not, can you delay it a few hours once the rain has passed? Plan your journey in advance and take care to avoid areas which are notorious for flooding. Leave in plenty of time too, allowing time for slower speeds and potential congestion. Check that your windscreen wiper blades are in full working condition. Fill up your tank. The traffic is most likely to be very stop and start and you will probably use both your heaters and lights which will use more of your fuel. Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged before you head off just in case you come across any difficulties on your journey.
DRIVING IN FLOODED AREAS Do not attempt to drive through water if you are unsure of the depth or if it appears to be fast flowing as you could easily get swept away. If you do drive through water, drive on the highest, most visible section of the road. Drive steadily and slowly. Driving at speed will create difficulties for other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. Drive a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Test your brakes after driving through deep water. If your engine cuts out after driving through deep water, do not attempt to restart your engine. Instead call for assistance.
ON THE ROAD Use dipped headlights so that other drivers can see you more easily, but try not to use your rear fog lights as they can mask your brake lights and can dazzle
