Honey Harfat Historic Town By Derek Rees Author of local books ‘Rings and Rosettes’ and ‘Haverfordwest and Brunel’s Railway’ Huddled round its Norman castle like chicks round a hen, Haverfordwest is a rather quaint old market town over 900 years old whose history is both colourful and distinguished. It started life in around 1108, developing gradually under the protection of the castle, which originated as a wooden palisade motte and bailey structure erected by a Fleming named Richard fitzTancred. He was one of the first immigrant Flemings brought over by Henry 1st to bring trade and stability to the far westerly corners of his kingdom, for the people of the inundated Low Countries were fierce warriors, skilled craftsmen and tradesmen ideally suited to the task of subduing the native Welsh and governing the areas in which they were settled. Just as Dylan Thomas described his native Swansea as “a lovely, ugly town.” Haverfordians have traditionally named their town ‘Honey Harfatʼ, which Visitbelieve www.haverforwesteye.co.uk they to be the sweetest place on earth.

The town is said to have derived its name from the fact that it is the lowest fording point on the river Cleddau where Buck or Haefer (he-goats or male deer) could cross the river. Haeferford became Haverfordwest in the 25th century in order to distinguish it from Hereford on the other side of the Welsh border. The medieval town, besieged down the ages by Welsh Princes and by Civil War soldiers under Cromwell, became the County Town, and not long after the Norman Conquest its imposing castle was erected on the site of fitzTancredʼs fortress and was visited by several Kings and Queens of England. The townʼs status and its importance as a river port caused several monarchs to grant it special privileges in the way of markets and fairs, the right to appoint a Mayor, Sheriff and Admiral of the Port and to call itself a Town and County. Its river trade faded after the coming of the railway in 1853 and finally died with the outbreak of World War Two. Its impressive quayside warehouses and riverside pub ‘The Bristol Traderʼ are among the last memorials the West country and beyond. 08443 911618 4 to its trade links with Telephone:

Picton Castle and Gardens The Families Of Picton First built just before 1300, Picton Castle has descended by unbroken inheritance through three famous south west Wales families. Initially in the care of the Wogan family from 1295 to 1485 Picton has been in the capable hands of the Phillips family since 1485. Over the centuries, the Phillips brought many changes to Picton, greatly increasing the size and beautifying its interiors with fine fillings, furnishings and a notable library. In 1987 the costs of maintenance and taxation prompted the Hon. Hanning Philipps, his wife and his sister Hon. Gwenllian Philipps to create the Picton Castle Charitable Trust which now safeguards the house, contents and gardens for public benefit.

From Castle to Stately Home In 1697, Sir John Phillips created a new front entrance accessed by a raised terrace giving direct entry to the principal rooms. By 1820, the whole area was raised to form a carriage circle with stone stairs placed either side of the area, designed by local architect Thomas Rowlands. The original medieval entrance is now some twelve foot underground.

Cheere, were carved in stone and the finest marbles to create a magnificent air of grandeur in each room. Then in the 1790’s, the large block at the rear of the castle including a grand new staircase, dining room, drawing rooms and bedrooms were added to replace the medieval solar tower designed by Griffith Watkins.

Grounds and Garden Much like the castle building, the grounds of Picton are a fusion of many centuries worth of different gardening styles and periods in history. The gardens are acknowledged as one of the most beautiful and atmospheric in Wales and are affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society. Considerable changes to the grounds occurred between 1746 and 1880. It is believed that in the 1820’s the present walled gardens were made. Around the end of this period many of the older trees in the garden were planted. This planting structure remains as the basis of the garden today and was upheld and redeveloped by the late Lady Marion Phillips and her husband the late Hon. Hanning Philipps accompanied by the late Head Gardener, who worked in Picton for over 40 years.

Today, the gardens cover an extensive area of more The 18th century was a particularly productive period than forty acres, varying in atmosphere from the in the modernisation of Picton. In 1749-52 a major formality of the walled garden to the wild and change in the interior was believed to have been luxuriant areas like Peach House Wood. At Mill Bay Homes we understand the demand for quality housing needed to suit not only budget but lifestyle too. We know how important it is to find a home that isn’t only affordable but designed to accommodate a whole range of different buyers.

We recognise that it has become difficult for first time buyers to purchase a property and, as such, we have worked hard to ensure that our properties can be sold at affordable prices without any compromise on standards.

Based in Pembrokeshire, we have recently begun construction for houses at Longstone Court, Letterston with early bird prices starting from £105,950 to £139,950.

However, it’s not just first time buyers who can benefit from this hard work, those looking to retire or downsize need to feel comfortable that they have the home they want at an affordable price.

Looking After Your Car If you’re anything like me, your cars engine only gets a look at when it’s in the garage for its MOT. Even if you did open the bonnet from time to time, how many of us would actually know what to look for and fiddle with? At this point, it’s probably best to step away from the engine and leave that to the professionals at your local garage. There are a few simple steps that all of us can take to keep our car in tip top condition helping those garage bills stay low. CHECK YOUR TYRES: Nightmare situation, you’re driving along and you hear the dreaded sound that tells you your tyre has blown. That’s when you start wishing you checked your tyre pressure more often. Defl ated tyres are more likely to puncture and are less fuel efficient. Getting your tyre pressure checked could not be easier. Buying a tyre pressure gauge will be a valuable asset to your car, allowing you to check the pressure as often as you like. If you do find you need more air, you can easily top this up for free in petrol stations. HAVE A LOOK AT YOUR DIPSTICK: Checking your oil on a regular basis can be the difference between a healthy engine and an engine in dire need of repair. I bet checking your oil levels more regularly sounds Visit www.haverforwesteye.co.uk like a good idea now?

Check your antifreeze in the winter to avoid your engine not starting on a cold winter’s morning A QUICK WAX, POLISH & VALET CAN WORK WONDERS: A clean car will help to maintain its overall interior and exterior appearance.
