Bedminster Bugs and Gromit Unleashed As one of the most cultural cities in the UK, Bristol is playing host to two major public art exhibitions this year and both are perfect for families. BEDMINSTER BUGS – HAVE YOU SEEN THE BUGS YET?
GROMIT UNLEASHED With all proceeds being donated to the Bristol Children’s Hospital Charity, a public art exhibition of giant Gromit sculptures which have been placed around Bristol and surrounding areas has been organised by Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal.
Since mid March, there has been an infestation of 82 giant, brightly coloured and patterned bugs swarming the streets of Bedminster, have you seen them?
The giant sculptures of Gromit have been painted and decorated by local artists, local school children and even some celebrities like Harry Hill, Joanna Lumley and One Directions Zayn Malik.
As part of the Bedminster Town Team, the Government’s Town Regeneration Grant Scheme and Mary Portas’s Portas Pilot Town, Bedminster has undergone a huge transformation in the last few months in an aim to revitalise the towns trade and retail potential. Using part of the £100,000 government grant, the Beautiful Bugs of Bedminster trail has seen giant butterflies, ladybirds, beetles, caterpillars, earwigs and bees attached to shop fronts, road signs and buildings all along East Street.
You can see these sculptures all around Bristol and in Ashton Court and Windmill Hill City Farm. You will find on your travels a Union Jack Gromit, a Beano themed Gromit, a Vincent Van Gogh Gromit and a Buzz Lightyear inspired Gromit Lightyear sculpture… you name it and you’ll probably find a Gromit sculpture of it!
Urban street artists took charge of the design and painting of the brightly coloured bugs and they’ve also had help from local school children adding their own touch of colour to the bugs.
All in all there are 80 Gromit’s for you to find in Bristol and there is a map that you can download available on www.gromitunleashed.org.uk. The exhibit will run throughout the summer holidays until September 8th 2013.
Accessible via the Bedminster Facebook page is a map of the Bug Trail and a Checklist of all 83 bugs for you to tick off as you go along East Street.

Tips on Finding a Local Tradesman in Bedminster Finding a tradesman who you can trust to carry out work in your property can be a very daunting process, especially as you want to get it right the first time. If you find a tradesman you can trust then you will be set for the next few years if any little incidents occur.
CALL A FEW DIFFERENT TRADESMEN If you’ve found a few different tradesmen that have had good recommendations either from your friends and family or the Council, then there’s no harm in calling all of them and arranging to meet them at separate times to discuss the work needed and cost. Ask them to write up a job specification and cost estimate for your record, then you can compare the level of work they’ve suggested and the amount it will cost you.
WORD OF MOUTH One of the most common and successful methods of finding a reliable tradesman is through word of mouth from friends, family, neighbours and colleagues. If they’ve used an electrician or plumber in the last few months and have had a positive experience with them and have a well rounded idea of well they performed in the short and long term. You’ll probably be more likely to give them a call and hopefully receive the same experience.
CHECK THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS To double check that the tradesman you’ve chosen is the definitely the one you want to hire then have another look at the recommendations you have researched. Find out via the internet whether they are registered with a trades industry body like Check a Trade, look over their council recommendations again and it wouldn’t hurt to ask them for their own references and researching their previous work. Although this may not guarantee the level and quality of work you will receive, it will help you confirm your choice.
RECOMMENDATIONS Your local council may have a list of local builders, plumbers, electricians, roofers etc. who have undergone thorough checks via the council. Council recommended tradesmen will give you extra peace of mind when you’re looking.

Gardening Tips for August If the lustre of your garden is slowly disappearing as August arrives here are a few tips and ideas for you to think about to keep your garden looking fresh and bright throughout the summer days.
FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
FLOWER BEDS
You can start picking black currants, apples, strawberries, pears, plums and rhubarb in August and either freeze them to use at a later date, eat them freshly picked or turn them into jams, pickles, tarts, pies or pavlovas to make a delicious fresh summer desert. If you’ve planted vegetables they will probably be making their debut later in the month or even in September so reshuffle the soil, apply a feed and water them so their last few weeks of growth are nourishing.
August is usually the time of year when fruit starts to ripen and vegetables start to pop up from under their cool soil.
There are probably a few dead heads appearing in your flower bed by now so have a look at deadheading them in August. Removing the dead heads will help keep your flower beds and pots looking fresh and may even encourage another bloom of flowers to appear before the end of the summer. Keep your flowers hydrated in the summer by watering them frequently. The best time to water plants is in the evening as it gives your flowers a chance to drink up all the water before the sun dries it all up.
GARDEN FURNITURE If you have bought some new garden furniture for this year, give it a little bit of a clean in August. If you’ve been making the most of the good weather and have had a few garden parties and barbecues, they may be in need of a little TLC by now. Give them a once over with a damp cloth and a fresh quote of paint or water sealant to keep them tidy.
Some weeds may also be popping up in your borders because of the good weather so weed often to reduce the amount of weeds appearing and prevent them from being repeat offenders. Prune some of your hedges so they’re tidy for the autumn and winter and are ready for next summer too.
If you have a barbecue then give it a deep clean as it may still be harbouring a random sausage or chicken strip.
LAWN Mow your lawn once a week or fortnight to keep it looking lush and green. You can apply a lawn feed in the morning so that your lawn looks fresh and green even when it’s boiling hot.
Visit www.bedminstereye.co.uk
Making theses preparations now in August while the weather is fine will ensure that your garden will be looking splendid for next years summer!

Win a Sunday Lunch for Two Including a bottle of house wine Winner of Best Sunday Roast in Bristol awarded by Bristol Good Food The Victoria Park was established in the Autumn of 2010, the goal is simple; to provide fresh, locally sourced food cooked by real chefs, top quality drinks at affordable prices, and a beautiful space to enjoy it all in. “We want it to be a nice relaxing place to read the papers and have a drink or some food. I keep hearing stories about how many pubs are closing every week but not every pub is destined for failure. The pubs that are closing are closing for a reason and that’s usually because they aren’t moving with the times and they aren’t giving people what they want. If you serve great food and drink at the right price, people will come to you.”
To enter, fill in the form below and return to: Bedminster Eye competition, Friday Ad Ltd, Cleddau Bridge Business Park, Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire SA73 1JL. Closing date 23rd August
Enter our competition and you could be in with a chance of winning a Sunday lunch for two, including a bottle of house wine.

Summer Motoring Tips in the summer take non drowsy medication, keep some tissues handy and your sunglasses close so that you can whip them on as soon as you feel your eyes becoming irritated.
With the summer sun shining high in the sky you may be thinking about packing up and taking a summer road trip to some your favourite beaches around Pembrokeshire/Carmarthen/Bedminster. If you’re taking a longer journey in the car then the thought of driving on a hot summer’s day probably isn’t filling you with joy. But do not fear for we have come up with a few helpful tips to make the whole driving experience a little more bearable for you, your passengers and your car.
DRIVING COUNTRY ROADS If your trip takes you through a few country roads then remember to drive a little more carefully. You will come across obstacles like tractors, cattle or sheep being herded and narrower roads which will require patience and distance so that you can pass through them safely.
BEFORE YOUR JOURNEY Having a quick once over your car before you set off is a must. High temperatures can cause punctures to tyres and lead to overheating in your car engine. To avoid such possibilities check your tyres are at the correct pressure as specified in your manufacturer’s handbook and make sure that your engines coolant level is correct. Bring a spare bottle of water to cool down your engine on stops and some extra coolant just in case.
KEEP YOUR KEYS CLOSE
DURING THE JOURNEY
If you are going on holiday then you will definitely be wanting to save as much money as possible on fuel. Opening your windows wide open causes extra drag especially when driving at a fast speed and air conditioning uses fuel to work so keep use to a minimum. On a hot day, the inside of a parked car can reach up to 80°c so to reduce this you may want to invest in a windscreen shield which are only a few pound and park in a shaded area. If you have dogs please remember not to leave them in the car at all as they may suffer from suffocation.
There is nothing worse than losing or misplacing your keys on holiday. Remember to bring a spare pair with you just incase and bring your handbook so that you can check if there is another way to get in to your car. If you’re off on a beach trip out your keys in a sand and water proof container. SAVING FUEL
If you have a long journey of over 2 hours ahead of you then you may be a little worried at the prospect of getting tired while driving. The night before your journey have a good night sleep, and fill your car with plenty of water and refreshments to keep you going.
