Town Guide Bedminster Town History
in 1748, Sir Jarrit Smyth, the Lord of the Manor, introduced the first mine shafts to Bedminster. From this moment on, Bedminster became a popular and successful mining community at the very beginnings of the industrial revolution. This encouraged a huge growth in population and also generated other industries like engineering, tanneries and glassworks.
With evidence of Roman origins, Bedminster was listed in the Domesday Book as a royal manor which belonged to Robert Fitzharding, the Baron of Berkeley. The manor remained for 300 years as the Lords of Berkeley’s favoured residence until 1605 when the Smyths of Ashton became the new lords of the manor.
Up until WW1, Bedminster flourished in industry and local shops, businesses and pubs opened in East Street, West Street and North Street making Bedminster a very popular place to visit. Unfortunately, this was not to last. During the ‘Bristol Blitz’ as it became known, Bedminster was badly hit in air raids from 1941-1944. The old parish church, St Johns was the biggest casualty of the air raids and as it was beyond repair had to be demolished.
Up until the 17th century, Bedminster was a wealthy community due to its ideal agricultural conditions and popular parish church, St Johns. However this was soon to end when in 1644, during the English Civil War, Prince Rupert and his Royalist forces captured Bristol, resulting in the sacking of Bedminster. The town was burnt down reducing it to a market town in desperate need of recovery and repair.
Today, East Street has been redeveloped with a pedestrian area laced with local businesses, shops and pubs to restore the old charm it held before WW1.
Bedminster remained in this state of desolation for over a century. Change only began to happen when

Visit the award-winning Cwmcerrig Farmshop and Grill Our Texel lamb and Hereford beef are reared here at Cwmcerrig to high standards of animal welfare. Our welcoming grill restaurant offers a wide selection of meals and attracts customers from far and wide. Our deli counter is bursting with a fantastic selection of delicious items.
The award-winning Cwmcerrig Farmshop is the No 1 choice for the finest local produce in West Wales.
We are the Watkins family (Roland, Reuben, Stuart, Tom and Davina) and we’ve been farming here since the 1950s. In 2008, we decided to make the big leap and open up a shop here at Cwmcerrig. We don’t like to do things by halves so we built a whopping 8000 sq ft facility with a restaurant, too! The shop opened in 2009 and we’ve not looked back. Since opening, we’ve won many awards, including several national farm shop of the year competitions. In the Taste of Wales awards, the shop won the’ local sourcing’ section and the firm’s sirloin steak took Gold in the beef section. Other recent prizes include two National Trust Fine Farm Produce Awards. We’re proud of the meat we produce here at Cwmcerrig and are delighted to now be selling it direct to our customers in our shop.
We have –
Delicious home-made pies, quiches, scotch eggs, traditional homemade Welsh favourites such as rissoles and faggots, a fantastic range of cheese, including some cracking local ones, cooked meats (we cook the ham, pork, beef and turkey here at Cwmcerrig) and paté, home-made coleslaw, potato salad and stuffing, olives and other antipasti, homemade cottage pie, chicken korma and chicken tikka masala. In short, there’s something for everyone at Cwmcerrig, with the accent firmly on fresh and local.
We hope you enjoy visiting Cwmcerrig as much as we enjoy working here!

Mother’s Day 2013 so now’s the time to get the kids excited at making those Mother’s Day gifts!
While the kids are young, making presents for Mother’s Day will not only keep them busy for a few hours but is a lovely idea guaranteed to put a smile on their Mum’s face.
Gift Check List
Make a Mother’s Day Card Get out the colouring pencils, glue sticks, glitter and scissors. Clear a space on the kitchen table and let the kids get creative. Let them draw pretty pictures of them and their Mum and decorate them as they wish. If they’re struggling for ideas of how to decorate their card, get them to think of things they love doing with their Mum. Whatever their cards turn out like, Mum is bound to love it regardless.
Visit the florist and choose the perfect bouquet for your Mum. Ask them if they can deliver on Mother’s Day for you, this will be a lovely addition to her day. Chocolate treats are at the top of every Mum’s list this Mother’s Day, especially if they’re her favourites.
Beautiful Bouquets
Book in advance for her spa or beauty treatments, collect her favourite pampering treats to prepare her for beauty treatments.
Bouquets of flowers don’t always have to be expensive! Pop down to your local craft shop with the kids and get them to choose a selection of tissue paper in pretty colours. Then look for some green coloured pipe cleaners. Now comes the easy bit. Take a rectangular piece of tissue paper and fold it accordion style (each fold should be about half an inch wide). Do this with several pieces of tissue paper and stack them on top of each other. Fold a pipe cleaner over the tissue paper and twist to secure. Cut the ends of the tissue paper into a curved shape and then separate the sheets of tissue paper by pulling them up towards the middle.
Remember the card! Pick your Mum a card that best reflects your relationship with your Mum. A sincere handwritten message will mean more to your Mum than the verse written in the card. It’s all in the wrapping, so accessorise your gifts with pretty tissue paper and ribbon – she’ll notice the effort!
Repeat this with other coloured tissue paper and before long you’ll have made a beautiful bouquet to keep. Personalised Mug If Mum likes a good cup of tea or coffee why not get your kids to decorate a mug? All you’ll need is a plain mug and some permanent marker pens. Get your kids to draw pretty pictures or write a sweet little message to their mum. Breakfast in Bed On Mother’s Day morning, wake the kids up a little earlier to prepare a perfect breakfast in bed for Mum. Ask them to help you prepare toast, cereal, pancakes, or a full English breakfast, and don’t forget the tea or coffee! Place the breakfast treats on a tray and decorate it with the card, bouquet of tissue flowers and personalised mug. Mother’s Day this year, falls on March 10th

Gardening Planning your garden this Spring Spring is the perfect time to start thinking about how you want your garden to bloom throughout the summer.
lawn to restore its appearance. Applying a lawn fertiliser can help improve the overall condition of your lawn and also its lushness.
Planning what types of flowers and plants you would like to have in your garden is a brilliant way to start.
If you have a patio area, why not buy some new garden furniture to update it a bit? Garden patio furniture comes in many shapes and sizes, ranging from the humble picnic table to the more luxurious lounging outdoor sofa set. Patio areas can be turned into warm and beautiful outdoor spaces with patio heaters and fire pits. Patio heaters are easy to add to your patio and affordable, but fire pits are more easy on the eye and make for a nice design feature.
If you’re struggling to think of what flowers to choose, maybe decide on a colour scheme first. This way you’ll be able to choose a variety of flowers that compliment each other in colour. When buying plants, take into consideration what type of atmosphere you want to create. If you want to go for a tropical theme, go for a selection of exotic palm trees or ferns. For a more English country themed garden choose some roses and herbs to match. Head down to your local garden centre and pick up some brand new gardening tools. A new set of gardening equipment not only help you with your gardening, but it will also inspire you to get those green fingers working. Over the winter, it is easy to neglect your lawn and let it grow out. Springtime is a good time to begin mowing your Visit www.bedminstereye.co.uk

Motoring Simple Steps to Buying a Car they can offer you anything better. Usually dealer finance includes extras like free courtesy cars and free road tax for a year, so it’s well worth looking into.
Buying a car is an exciting prospect for many buyers, especially for first time buyers. Here are a few helpful tips to consider when buying a car. Draw up a shortlist of potential makes and models. This will help you determine what kind of car you are looking for. Make a note of whether you are looking for a small, medium or large car and whether there are any makes you are more interested in.
Next, negotiate with your dealer. Show the dealer you are interested in the car. See how far they are willing to drop the initial price of the car and what extras they are willing to include. When you have a good idea of what you are looking for and what car fi ts your needs and budget, buying the car will be the easiest bit.
Visit your local car showrooms and garages to see what they have to offer. This can give you a good idea of prices. It also allows you to have a good look at the cars and decide whether you like the overall appearance of them. Now for the fun part, take them out for a test drive. Ask to take them for a spin around the area to see how they are to drive. Take notice of what the gears feel like and how long they take to reach the speed limit. Ask yourself how it feels to drive them. Do you enjoy driving it, or do you find it difficult to handle? What condition is the car interior? Asking yourself these questions is bound to determine which car is your favourite. Once you’ve decided which car is your favourite, check the running costs. How much is the insurance going to cost you? How much is the car’s road tax? Taking into consideration the car’s monthly costs will help you get a rounded idea of its overall cost. Take a look at finance options that the dealer provides to see if Visit www.bedminstereye.co.uk

Distance to work most important factor The distance between a homebuyerʼs new home and their workplace is the biggest priority when it comes to buying a property, according to new research from Santander Mortgages. Brits would pay an average of over £5,000 to live closer to work, and a third of those surveyed said it was the number one factor. Second most important was the amount of living space available for their budget, with good transport links, parking access and south-facing gardens all highlighted as being key in the decision-making process. Families with children also want to ensure they are in a catchment area for a good school. Phil Cliff, director of Santander Mortgages, commented: “Itʼs fascinating to see the value that prospective buyers attach to different property features, and how these evolve as people get older and family situations change. Some of the most in-demand privileges, however, such as close proximity to the city or good schools, come with an expensive price tag. Itʼs therefore important that people speak to experts to ensure that their expectations are realistic and so that they get a good understanding of what they can and canʼt afford.” Paul Goverd, Managing Director of C J Hole in Southville said: “None of the findings in this survey will come as a surprise to anyone who operates within the property market. The old adage of location, location, location being key is as true today as it ever was. Clearly peopleʼs worklife balance and the increasing costs of commuting are key elements when it comes to choosing the location in which to buy or rent.”
Rightmove report says rents set to rise circa 2% in 2013 Rents are set to rise an average of 2% in 2013, tempered by majority of landlords planning a ʻrent freezeʼ. Some 61% of existing landlords are planning a ʻrent freezeʼ for 2013, the clearest indicator yet that landlords will opt for a lighter foot on the ʻrent rise acceleratorʼ next year. Just one in four (25%) of existing landlords intend to put rents up in 2013, and of those only around a third (35%) plan a raise of more than 5% - the result is likely to see the annual rate of growth ease to circa 2%. Landlords becoming increasingly mindful of tenantsʼ ability to meet rising rental demands, heightening risk of arrears and voids. So far more than a fifth (22%) of current tenants pays 50% or more of their take-home pay on rent as ʻaffordability ceilingʼ comes into view. Miles Shipside, director and housing market analyst at Rightmove, said: “The widening gap between tenant demand and rental property supply over the last few years has fuelled upwards pressure on rents. “However, the majority of landlords now seem to be prepared to exercise constraint and are planning a ʻrent freezeʼ for 2013. Lettings agents still report consistently high demand but more are warning landlords of the risks of squeezing tenantsʼ finances too hard. “However, some tenants in rental hotspots like London and Manchester may bear the brunt of higher rises. This combination of apparent benevolence and bullish hotspots may give a less racy rent rise outlook overall, but does not mask the fact that some tenants are again in for a rent rise shock.” Paul Goverd, Managing Director at C J Hole in Southville said: “Every situation needs to be looked at individually in order for a landlord to get the best return on their investment. This should include factors such as the longevity of the tenancy, the avoidance of void periods and the quality of tenant in terms of rental payments and property maintenance.”
