Halloween Traditions several apples placed in the water. Then you would take it in turns to see who can bite an apple first. The first to bite an apple out of the water, will be the first to marry. Over the years apple bobbing has been called ‘Snap Apple’ or ‘dooking’ in Scotland.
All Hallows Eve or Halloween as it is now more commonly known is one of the oldest and most popular celebrations in the world dating back to the years when the Celts lived in Britain over 2000 years ago. Many of the traditions of All Hallows Eve like apple bobbing and carving a pumpkin are still practiced today, but did you know what these traditions mean and where they came from?
PUMPKIN LANTERNS Ever thought why we carve scary faces into pumpkins and light a candle? Well this custom was associated with Irish folklore and the Irish Halloween festival, Samhain. Irish folklore has it that jack-o-lanterns carved into pumpkins are named after an Irish trickster named Jack who one day decided to play a trick on the devil. Jack trapped the devil in a turnip and paraded the devil in his town. The devil put a curse on Jack and made him a spirit in hell, who every Halloween, would be released to terrorise the living. To ward Jack away, the Irish began carving a face into a turnip and placing it outside their home to scare Jack. This custom has developed over the years, and now a pumpkin is more commonly used.
OCTOBER 31ST Traditionally, All Hallows Eve was celebrated on 1st November by the Catholic Church. This day named All Saints Day was dedicated to paying respect to all the Saints in England. For the Celts, October 31st marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. This evening was also believed to be the night that the door to the Otherworld was opened for the spirits of those who had died the year before, to return to the living world. Feasts would be held for the good spirits with a place laid at each table to welcome them to the living world. To ward off the evil and harmful spirits, you would wear a guise to threaten them. This idea of wearing a guise (or disguise) is still practiced today with many Trick or Treaters choosing to dress up as witches, vampires, ghouls and monsters.
TRICK OR TREAT? Halloween has always been associated with mischief makers and Trick or Treating on All Hallows Eve is the perfect way for all tricks to be had. Like apple bobbing and the Jack-o-Lanterns, Trick or Treating was part of the Irish celebration of Samhain, where people would dress in a disguise and travel from door to door, collecting food or fuel for the Samhain bonfire. There was a similar Christian tradition called Souling which involved the baking of soul cakes which would then be offered by children to neighbours. How many of these customs and traditions are you going to take part in this Halloween?
APPLES For a long time apples have been associated with the celebration of Halloween. Apples hold many myths behind them and are a symbol of evil in the Christian religion. However to Pagan’s, apples were a symbol of fertility and love, and would be used to help young girls discover their one true love. Games were created on the basis of this myth including the highly popular, apple bobbing. The game involves a tub of water with

Ghostly Goings On in Bedminster and Bristol
ARNOS VALE CEMETERY Opened as a cemetery in 1839, Arnos Vale Cemetery is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the UK, with its architecture and landscaping designed to reflect classical Greece. Amongst the classical beauty of the statues and monuments, the cemetery has a very prominent feeling of another presence that fills the cemetery and the crematorium. It has often been noted that in the crematorium, visitors suddenly are overwhelmed with grief, with some even bursting into tears, many believing that they are feeling the sorrow of the families who have cremated their loved ones. Even stranger than these outbursts of emotion though is the sightings of some female ghosts dressed in black. One ghost is of a woman who walks the area named Soldiers Corner. She is often seen crying, mourning the death of her husband who was killed in action during World War One. The other notable woman, has often been seen stumbling around the cemetery screaming, her hands are cut and it is thought that she was accidentally buried alive, only being discovered when the cemetery underwent maintenance and her body was exhumed. So dig out your torches and warm clothes, stoke that fire up and discover the truth behind some of Bristol’s most haunted locations.
As Halloween approaches, we celebrate the eve when the gate from the Otherworld is opened and its ghosts and ghouls enter the living world roaming the land to haunt us Halloweeners and cause some extra scares and bumps in the night. Bristol’s dark and murky history has many tales which will send shivers down your spine and here is a few of the darkest ghost stories to get you in the Halloween spirit. ASHTON COURT ESTATE Bristol’s stateliest country estate is one of the oldest in England. Owned by the Smyth family for over 400 years, there are many family secrets that are permeated into the estates history, including the presence of a few ghosts. There have been many sightings of spectres roaming the country grounds, but none are more mysterious than that of the Smyth Family Headless Huntsman and the ghost of Ann Smyth. According to family legend, the ghost of the Headless Huntsman has haunted the estate for over 400 years. Although the identity of the Headless Huntsman is unknown, it has been noted that he usually roams the grounds of the country park, galloping towards you at such a speed that makes the sounds of the horses hooves reverberate throughout the grounds. Then in a flash, the Headless Horseman is gone leaving no trace of his ever being there. The ghost of Ann Smyth is not as well known as the Headless Horseman but is a sadder tale. As a young girl, Ann Smyth was stabbed in the heart in the Long Gallery of Ashton Court. Her ghost is said to

Don’t Move. Improve! For many homeowners nowadays, the sensible and affordable idea is to improve your home rather than packing up and moving. With house prices having rocketed in the last few years, more and more of us are taking the time to refurbish and improve our homes before considering moving to another one. Let’s face it, redecorating is so much more affordable than moving and will make you that one step closer to achieving your perfect home.
dining room or vice versa. If you move your furniture around into different rooms you may discover that it looks and fits better there. If you are bored of your current furniture then you could always replace it. Many second hand furniture shops now breathe new life into old furniture and transform them into totally different pieces, so these shops are worth a visit to either give you some inspiration or encourage you to rehome a transformed chest of draws.
DECLUTTER THE JUNK Don’t ever think that this is going to be a quick and endless task. Unfortunately your fairy godmother isn’t going to magically appear with her wand and sweep all your clutter away with a simple flick of her wand. But with a little time and elbow grease, you should see a great improvement immediately after you’ve decluttered! Get rid of everything that you don’t use anymore and make sure you take them to the tip! If you come across some items that are in good condition or are unused, then this is the perfect opportunity to have a car boot sale or sell them on the internet. The money you make from them can go towards your redecorating fund.
EXTEND YOUR LIVING SPACE Ever thought of extending your kitchen or converting your attic into living space? As well as giving you more space, an extension or attic conversion could add between 10 to 50% value to your house. So if you do have the space (and the planning permission) to extend definitely look into it. Kitchens are the most popular and the best investment when thinking about extending, and will give your home the ‘new build’ feel. Converting an attic is ideal if you are looking for a bigger bedroom, a warm and cosy snug or a home theatre! Improving your home instead of moving to another one is a very good way of investing in your future. It is also a good habit to keep as you will be encouraged to move with the times and keep your house updated. Improvements don’t have to be major, a few small improvements like decluttering could greatly improve the appearance of your home and even give you some spare pennies for that rainy day fund!
FRESHEN UP Now you’ve gotten rid of all your clutter, you will have a clearer vision of your home and be able to spot which parts need attention the most. Come up with a plan of what you want each room to be. Maybe you’d like to change rooms a bit and make the living room into the

Looking After Your Car Checking your oil can be the difference between a healthy engine and an engine in need of dire repair
If you’re anything like me, your cars engine only gets a look at when it’s in the garage for its MOT. Even if you did open the bonnet from time to time, how many of us would actually know what to look for and fiddle with? At this point, it’s probably best to step away from the engine and leave that to the professionals at your local garage. There are a few simple steps that all of us can take to keep our car in tip top condition helping those garage bills stay low.
A QUICK WAX, POLISH & VALET CAN WORK WONDERS: A clean car will help to maintain its overall interior and exterior appearance. A car valet these days often cost below £10 and will keep the spec of your car looking as it did when you first bought it. A wax and polish will help preserve your car’s colour too.
CHECK YOUR TYRES: Nightmare situation, you’re driving along and you hear the dreaded sound that tells you your tyre has blown. That’s when you start wishing you checked your tyre pressure more often. Defl ated tyres are more likely to puncture and are less fuel efficient. Getting your tyre pressure checked could not be easier. Buying a tyre pressure gauge will be a valuable asset to your car, allowing you to check the pressure as often as you like. If you do find you need more air, you can easily top this up for free in petrol stations.
DON’T LET THE COLD GET TO YOUR ENGINE: If the weather is a little on the cold to freezing side make sure you check your antifreeze levels in your tank. You should check this in the winter especially to avoid your engine not starting on a cold winter’s morning. PREVENT YOUR ENGINE FROM OVERHEATING: You can do this by regularly checking your coolant level in your car. The coolant liquid in your engine will help transfer the heat generated by your engine. A burnt out engine usually means that you need to replace the whole thing so make sure you add this to your check list.
HAVE A LOOK AT YOUR DIPSTICK: Checking your oil on a regular basis can be the difference between a healthy engine and an engine in dire need of repair. I bet checking your oil levels more regularly sounds like a good idea now?
