The fifth annual Bristol BrouHaHa Comedy Festival launches this month at the Tobacco Factory Theatre and the Hen & Chicken from July 12th to 20th. Most of the shows are double bills featuring many warm-up previews for the mighty Edinburgh Festival in August plus hour-long stand-up sets from some of the most established acts from the world circuit including Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Malawi, Norway, Ireland and the UK. Bristol BrouHaHa is organised by The Comedy Box who have been based in the city for twenty years running shows in various venues, but they are probably better associated with Bedminsterʼs Hen & Chicken where theyʼve been promoting stand-up shows since 1998. The large upstairs function room in this famous Bristol boozer has played host to the likes of Bill Bailey, Russell Howard, Russell Brand, Dylan Moran, Al Murray The Pub Landlord, Ardal OʼHanlon and many other comedians who have gone on to become household names. Since 2009, The Comedy Box has been running the Bristol BrouHaHa comedy festival in July and it has now become an eagerly anticipated annual fixture on the Bristol events calendar. Comics such as Sarah Millican, John Bishop, Russell Kane, Rhod Gilbert and Henning Wehn have aired their brand new shows here in the past few years. Which unknown comedians might you discover this year who could be headlining their own nationwide tours before long? Bristol BrouHaHa is a cornucopia of stand-up styles with many comedians at the top of their game. Comedians returning this year are Richard Herring, Ian Stone, John Robins, Jarred Christmas and Celia Pacquola, while newcomers include Dana Alexander, Romesh Ranganathan, Gary Delaney and Tom Allen. Most of these shows are brand new. Some are current touring shows such as David OʼDoherty, Alan Francis and Daliso Chaponda. And alongside all of the human stand-up there is also the wonderfully silly Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre. BrouHaHa is a true celebration of the best of stand-up (& sock puppet comedy!). And if youʼd like to introduce your young off-spring to the delights of stand-up comedy there is a Comedy-Club-4-Kids show at the Tobacco Factory at 4pm on Saturday 20 July. Three circuit comedians perform an hour long show for 6 to 11 year olds without any rude words! You can still book multiple shows for Bristol BrouHaHa using the 3-SHOWS-FOR-PRICE-OF-2 facility where one show is completely free if you also book a show at the Hen & Chicken.

Blackbeard: Bristol’s most Notorious Pirate… Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard, was an infamous pirate active during the Golden Age of Piracy. Blackbeard’s place of birth was thought to have been in Bristol in 1680.
Blackbeard was feared by many for his threatening appearance, which consisted of a black beard (hence the name) which was said by some to cover his whole face. He’d braid candle wicks or bits of rope into his beard and set them alight to evoke fear and terror into his enemies during battle. Dressed in a crimson-coloured coat, with swords and pistols crossed across his chest, Blackbeard’s frightful appearance would strike fear into even the bravest of enemies. Blackbeard’s time in power only lasted two years, but those two years were full of terror and despair from those in Blackbeard’s way. Blackbeard was a proper pirate of the Caribbean as he mainly operated the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Blackbeard was a calculating and intelligent pirate and his method of marooning merchant ships was particularly interesting. When a ship was approaching, Blackbeard would trick the merchant vessel into believing it was friend and not foe. Then, just as there was no escape, his crew would hoist Blackbeard’s flag up. Because of Blackbeard’s reputation, this would usually lead to surrender and Blackbeard’s men would ambush the ship, looting it of all its treasures then set it alight as a warning to other vessels.
Visit www.bedminstereye.co.uk In 1718, Blackbeard had settled in Ocracoke Island,
North Carolina where he could easily attack merchant ships travelling the American coastline. On Ocracoke Island, Blackbeard held a huge pirate party with lots of dancing, drinking and celebrations. Pirates from near and far came to enjoy the party having heard news of it. Unfortunately, the governor of Virginia had also heard of the party and organised two Royal Navy ships to attack the island. Commanded by Lieutenant Robert Maynard, the navy approached the island ready for attack, knowing that Blackbeard had nowhere to escape. Maynard and his crew approached the island in the morning having prepared through the night for attack. Taking on some of Blackbeard’s own tactics, Maynard and his men tricked the pirates into thinking he and his crew were dead by hiding under deck. Once the pirates were aboard the ship, Maynard and his men jumped into attack and a bloody battle began. Blackbeard came face to face with Maynard in a pistol fight. Two shots were fired. Blackbeard missed but Maynard’s was spot on. Injured, Blackbeard raised his sword to fight back but was taken from behind by one of Maynard’s men who cut his throat. Victorious, Maynard cut Blackbeard’s head off and as a warning to other pirates, suspended Blackbeard’s head on the bow of Maynard’s ship.
Blackbeard’s reign as a pirate was a short lived one, but despite this he still managed to be one of the most 8 notorious pirates Follow twitter.com/bedminsterEye of his day.

Cycling in Bedminster This summer, the 100th Edition of the Tour de France will be taking place in the beautiful French countryside. Following the success of Bradley Wiggins in last year’s Tour, more and more of us are taking inspiration from the competitors and dusting our bikes off. With Bristol being voted England’s first Cycling City, there are many cycle routes around the Bristol and Bedminster area that have been redeveloped to become safer and easier to access. BRISTOL AND BATH RAILWAY PATH Part of the National Cycle Network, The Bristol and Bath Railway Path is a 15-mile off-road cycle path. The route follows the old railway line of the Midland Railway Mangotsfield and Bath Branch Line which was closed in the 1960s in favour of the Great Western Railway.

Tips on Finding a Local Tradesman in Bedminster Finding a tradesman who you can trust to carry out work in your property can be a very daunting process, especially as you want to get it right the first time. If you find a tradesman you can trust then you will be set for the next few years if any little incidents occur. WORD OF MOUTH One of the most common and successful methods of finding a reliable tradesman is through word of mouth from friends, family, neighbours and colleagues. If they’ve used an electrician or plumber in the last few months and have had a positive experience with them and have a well rounded idea of well they performed in the short and long term. You’ll probably be more likely to give them a call and hopefully receive the same experience.
CALL A FEW DIFFERENT TRADESMEN If you’ve found a few different tradesmen that have had good recommendations either from your friends and family or the Council, then there’s no harm in calling all of them and arranging to meet them at separate times to discuss the work needed and cost. Ask them to write up a job specification and cost estimate for your record, then you can compare the level of work they’ve suggested and the amount it will cost you.
CHECK THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS To double check that the tradesman you’ve chosen is the definitely the one you want to hire then have another look at the recommendations you have researched. Find out via the internet whether they are registered with a trades industry body like Check RECOMMENDATIONS a Trade, look over their council recommendations Your local council may have a list of local builders, again and it wouldn’t hurt to ask them for their own plumbers, electricians, roofers etc. who have references and researching their previous work. undergone thorough checks via the council. Council Although this may not guarantee the level and quality recommended tradesmen will give you extra peace of of work you will receive, it will help you confirm 16 your choice.Follow twitter.com/bedminsterEye Visit when www.bedminstereye.co.uk mind you’re looking.

Summery Plants for a Summery Garden Summer is best spent in your back garden, relaxing on a sun lounger, cool drink in one hand magazine or book in the other and your sunnies on enjoying the warmth of the summer time. Fragrant flowers with brightly coloured petals will perfect your summertime garden and make you feel that you are sunning yourself in an exotic garden.
perennials meaning they’ll last all through next summer, too. No garden is complete without some greenery to break up the colouring of your border flowers. If you’re looking for some stylish additions to your garden then boxed plants are easy to manage and are more often than not the victims of the art of topiary, allowing you to cut them into particular shapes. Box plants have little pale yellow or white flowers and the leaves are glossy giving off that overall primped and preened look that many exotic gardens exude.
Garden borders should be an array of colour and scent for the butterflies to flutter around and bees to buzz around and collect their nectar. A good choice of flowers like Geraniums, Busy Lizzies, Alyssum, Petunias and Pansies provide instant bursts of colour and coverage while still being easy to maintain throughout the flowering season. Many of these plants come in a variety of shades and colours so you could even go so far as to colour coordinate your border.
Now your garden is all kitted out for summer, there’s not much left to do other than sit back, relax and enjoy the sun.
If you have a large area to cover then it may be worth investing in some space filling flowers to disguise the soil and accompany your border plants. Roses, Lavender, Hyacinths, Sweet Peas, Dahlias, Sunflowers, Honeysuckle and Foxgloves will give your borders some height and offer you the bursts of fragrance that every summer garden needs. You’ll find with plants like Honeysuckle and Lavender that the scent will last well into the evening when your barbecue or summer party is well under way. On the plus side these plants are also more likely to be

Buying a Second-Hand Caravan or Motor Home If you’re a first time caravan or motor home buyer you may be a little unsure of what to take notice of when looking. It’s easy to get carried away when making a big purchase and make an impulse buy on a caravan or motorhome that may look or feel perfect but actually has something seriously wrong with it.The internet is a useful and essential research tool to use so make sure you have a browse before you visit any dealer. The internet will provide you with reviews on different makes and models, price ranges, levels of spec and will basically give you a good idea of what’s hot and what’s not in the caravan and motorhome world, leaving you fully prepared to visit the dealers in your area. When you arrive at the dealership, take some time to sit with a member of the sales team and talk to them about what exactly you are looking for in a caravan or motorhome so you can purchase the motorhome or caravan that is exactly to your requirements. Discuss with the dealer exactly what you are looking for in a caravan or motor home; are you looking for one that is comfortable? Or are you looking for one that can Visit www.bedminstereye.co.uk just whisk you off regardless of how comfortable it is?
Discussing these topics with the dealer will help them define what you are looking for and will help make the process run alot smoother. The dealer will most likely present you with three or four motorhomes or caravans they think match your criteria. Take time to look at your choices and make good use of your dealer by asking them questions. Find out the age of the caravans, where it has been kept when not in use and when it was last serviced to gain a more rounded idea of the motorhome you are looking at. If none of the vehicles fit your description, then don’t be afraid to ask to see more and give them a few other ideas of what you’re looking for. Before you purchase your caravan or motorhome make a few final pre-purchase checks just to make sure it’s everything you’re looking for. Look again at the overall condition of the exterior and interior of the vehicle including the electrics and tyres. Once everything has been thoroughly looked over and you’re happy with the vehicle then it’s just your future 20 journey’s leftFollow to plan. twitter.com/bedminsterEye
