Visit the award-winning Cwmcerrig Farmshop and Grill The award-winning Cwmcerrig Farmshop is the No 1 choice for the finest local produce in West Wales.
We are the Watkins family (Roland, Reuben, Stuart, Tom and Davina) and we’ve been farming here since the 1950s. In 2008, we decided to make the big leap and open up a shop here at Cwmcerrig. We don’t like to do things by halves so we built a whopping 8000 sq ft facility with a restaurant, too! The shop opened in 2009 and we’ve not looked back. Since opening, we’ve won many awards, including several national farm shop of the year competitions. In the Taste of Wales awards, the shop won the’ local sourcing’ section and the firm’s sirloin steak took Gold in the beef section. Other recent prizes include two National Trust Fine Farm Produce Awards. We’re proud of the meat we produce here at Cwmcerrig and are delighted to now be selling it direct to our customers in our shop.
Our Texel lamb and Hereford beef are reared here at Cwmcerrig to high standards of animal welfare. Our welcoming grill restaurant offers a wide selection of meals and attracts customers from far and wide. Our deli counter is bursting with a fantastic selection of delicious items. We have –
Delicious home-made pies, quiches, scotch eggs, traditional homemade Welsh favourites such as rissoles and faggots, a fantastic range of cheese, including some cracking local ones, cooked meats (we cook the ham, pork, beef and turkey here at Cwmcerrig). and paté, home-made coleslaw, potato salad and stuffing, olives and other antipasti, homemade cottage pie, chicken korma and chicken tikka masala. In short, there’s something for everyone at Cwmcerrig, with the accent firmly on fresh and local.

What’s On
in Carmarthen this Month Carmarthen has plenty of activities to keep you and your family busy. With the new shopping centre St Catherine’s Walk and the National Botanic Garden of Wales right on the town’s doorstep, you are spoilt for choice for things to do in Carmarthen. The National Botanic Gardens of Wales is just a 12 minute drive from Carmarthen town centre and has the world’s largest single span glasshouse displaying a huge array of Mediterranean plants and flowers. The gardens are spread across 560 acres of beautiful Carmarthenshire countryside and are home to some of Wales’ rarest wild plants. You can spend the day wandering through the garden’s award-winning Japanese garden, transporting you from the Welsh hills to an authentic Japanese world, incorporating three traditional Japanese gardens into the display – the Stream and Lake Garden, the Gravel Garden and the Tea Garden. The gardens have designated nature reserves and beehives and a plant-themed children’s area to let the kids run off some steam. If you are hungry by mid day, then the gardens have it’s very own Med Café VisitThe www.bedminstereye.co.uk and Gatehouse Café, both using organic and local
Carmarthenshire produce making a yummy selection of light food and drinks. If a day out shopping is more your thing then St Catherine’s Walk is the place for you. St Catherine’s Walk opened recently in 2010 and has been the centre point of Carmarthen’s thriving shopping scene ever since. The shopping centre comprises of plenty of high street shops for you to choose from and also has a great selection of restaurants and a 3D multiplex sixscreen cinema right in the centre of the complex. St Catherine’s Walk Square has in its centre a monument to its farming and droving heritage, depicting a drover walking with his duck and sheep, designed by sculptor, Tony Woodman. St Catherine’s Walk is not the only location in Carmarthen to have a piece of local artwork. Carmarthen is dotted with art sculptures from local artists and sculptors who have created art embodying Carmarthen’s heritage. On the banks of Carmarthen Riverside you will find three Salmon landforms representing the town’s history with coracle fishing and on the bypass of Llangunnor Road is a steel sculpture in tribute to the Old Oak Tree that Merlin 6 prophesied that whenTelephone: 08443 911618 it fell, so would Carmarthen.

Llandovery Prep School Llandovery Prep School is bucking the trend and continuing to grow at an unprecedented rate. The independent school has seen a remarkable 40% increase in numbers this year and is getting bigger! The number of Prep school boarders is also on the up as the school attracts more boys and girls from Carmarthen, Lampeter, Brecon, Swansea and Pembrokeshire. Occasional boarding is also a popular option. Day pupils and boarders enjoy an incredibly broadbased curriculum and a rich and varied co-curricular activity programme that includes swimming, hockey, rugby, netball, fencing, athletics, cross country, Chess, Welsh, French and Spanish, Drama, Music, LAMDA, Nature and Photography, ‘Big Sing’ Choir and a Philosophy and Debating Society. Small class sizes at Llandovery Prep are guaranteed and focus on reading, writing and arithmetic is a primary focus. The school is free from the constraints of the National Curriculum and takes pupils from the September following their third birthday. Llandovery Prep is a feeder school for Llandovery College which is one of Wales’s oldest and most respected independent schools. Within 45 acres of safe wooded campus there is a wonderful mix of the traditional and modern - a truly global approach to education and an international reputation for sport. Mellow old buildings blend with modern teaching faculties and pupils have access to the very latest technology and facilities. Headmaster Guy Ayling says: “Our parents and pupils speak of the ‘unique feeling’ they get at Llandovery College which, they say, sets us apart from other schools. We believe this is because we are a small school with a strong sense of community and which values respect, honesty, integrity and academic determination. All this is strongly rooted in our Welsh Visit www.bedminstereye.co.uk
culture and heritage.” Academic excellence is Llandovery College’s primary aim and our 2012 A Level examination results reflect this. A record 64 per cent of students achieved A*-B grades – a four per cent increase on last year while a total of 81 per cent gained A*-C. At the heart of Llandovery College’s ethos is the emphasis on the importance of individual effort, talent and attainment - a philosophy that extends beyond the classroom onto the field of play and across the wide spectrum of cultural and leisure activities. Through our thriving Combined Cadet Force and the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, pupils often discover unexpected talents while acquiring the vital skills of leadership, responsibility, consideration and endurance. Star of stage and song, Rhydian Roberts who rose to fame as an X Factor finalist, is a former head boy at Llandovery College. Rising star Iwan Lewis, who recently appeared in the film version of Les Miserables alongside Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman, is also a former pupil. As a broad-ability school, Llandovery College offers both day and boarding places to boys and girls from the ages of three to 18. Classes are kept deliberately small, creating a strong sense of community within a unique home-from-home environment. Cosy boarding houses are run by houseparents, themselves teachers with their own families, ensuring pupils thrive in a stable environment. Well-known for its sporting excellence, Llandovery College takes great pride in having four former pupils in the Wales squad. George North, Andy Powell, Rhodri Thomas and Alun Wyn Jones are all old boys. Buses run daily from Carmarthen, Ammanford, Llanelli, Lampeter and Brecon.

Eat Healthily
How to change your outlook towards dieting Dieting. There comes a time in everyone’s life where you just have to face facts and except that maybe you could do with losing a few pounds. The thought makes you shudder with dread at the thought of spending the majority of your day thinking about food, which normally just ends up making you hungrier than when you were not dieting. Anyway, as soon as you get off the diet it all goes pear shaped and you end up eating more in a week than you have in the last three months and begin piling the weight on again. The thing is, dieting should be more of a frame of mind than a chore you’re expected to do once every three months. So how do you put yourself into that mindset and educate yourself to lead a healthier lifestyle and change the way you think about food for ever. A few simple steps is all it takes, the only rule is, you have to stick it out if you want to achieve your healthy eating goal.
for example turkey, which is a great source of protein and tasty too. Reducing your carb intake may be obvious, but you will be surprised at the effect it has on your body. Another dieting phenomenon to match high protein diets, low carb diets are proven to reduce cravings and to steady the rate at which you lose weight. You don’t have to cut out all carbs, as you do need some to sustain a balanced diet so cut out the right carbs like white bread and white pasta and replace them with brown or whole grain bread and pasta. Many people forget that vegetables like sweet potato and green beans are a form of carbohydrate so you can include these in your healthy eating and make yummy sweet potato chips with your fresh green beans. Walking is something we have to do every day, whether it’s walking from your bed to the bathroom or walking to the shop to buy some milk. But again, this is something we associate with hard work and effort rather than something you should embrace and enjoy. Even if it’s a case of parking your car a little further away from the shops or the office, walking can greatly improve your overall fitness and health, helping you lose weight. Walking is not like other exercises as you can do it pretty much without getting breathless and lightheaded, so try it out, you never know you may enjoy it.
High protein diets have come to the forefront in the last few years with diets like the Dukan Diet becoming a very popular weight loss method for many people. The Dukan Diet is based on a process of four phases that focus heavily on the basic food groups of protein and vegetables. A protein diet can encourage your metabolism to work faster and has a natural diuretic effect helping you maintain that trim and toned figure you’ve been working hard for. It’s not just a matter of eating any food high in protein, If you can adapt your diet to include these basic steps be careful of meat with high levels of fat, as lean then you will be well on your way to improving your meats are far more effective sources of protein. Try, 14 overall health and diet. Visit www.bedminstereye.co.uk Telephone: 08443 911618

Grow Your Own Herb Garden There is nothing better than using fresh herbs while cooking, and it’s an even better feeling when you know you’ve grown your herbs yourself. Surely a herb garden is a must have? Herbs have been used for centuries in perfumes, medicines and remedies and can turn any meal in to a culinary masterpiece. But if you’re struggling to think of what herbs you need in your garden or window box, then here are a few ideas to help you. TO START OFF prepare your window box or herb patch with a soil based compost which will help retain the moisture herbs need to flourish. You don’t need to worry too much about positioning your herbs in a sunny spot as herbs don’t need much sunshine to remain healthy. Looking After Your Car If you’re anything like me, your cars engine only gets a look at when it’s in the garage for its MOT. Even if you did open the bonnet from time to time, how many of us would actually know what to look for and fiddle with? At this point, it’s probably best to step away from the engine and leave that to the professionals at your local garage. There are a few simple steps that all of us can take to keep our car in tip top condition helping those garage bills stay low. CHECK YOUR TYRES: Nightmare situation, you’re driving along and you hear the dreaded sound that tells you your tyre has blown. That’s when you start wishing you checked your tyre pressure more often. Defl ated tyres are more likely to puncture and are less fuel efficient. Getting your tyre pressure checked could not be easier. Buying a tyre pressure gauge will be a valuable asset to your car, allowing you to check the pressure as often as you like. If you do find you need more air, you can easily top this up for free in petrol stations. HAVE A LOOK AT YOUR DIPSTICK: Checking your oil on a regular basis can be the difference between a healthy engine and an engine in dire need of repair. I bet checking your oil levels more regularly sounds Visita good www.bedminstereye.co.uk like idea now?
Checking your oil can be the difference between a healthy engine and an engine in need of dire repair A QUICK WAX, POLISH & VALET CAN WORK WONDERS: A clean car will help to maintain its overall interior and exterior appearance. A car valet these days often cost below £10 and will keep the spec of your car looking as it did when you first bought it. A wax and polish will help preserve your car’s colour too. DON’T LET THE COLD GET TO YOUR ENGINE:: If the weather is a little on the cold to freezing side make sure you check your antifreeze levels in your tank. You should check this in the winter especially to avoid your engine not starting on a cold winter’s morning. PREVENT YOUR ENGINE FROM OVERHEATING: You can do this by regularly checking your coolant level in your car. The coolant liquid in your engine will help transfer the heat generated by your engine. A burnt out engine usually means that you need to replace the whole thing so make sure you add this to your 20 check list. Telephone: 08443 911618
