controlled by an Augustinian Priory but when the new castle was built it rivalled the power of the Priory. New Carmarthen was ruled by the castle and Old Carmarthen remained under the rule of the Priory. This changed when Henry VIII introduced the Reformation bringing the old and the new together making it one of the largest towns in Wales up until the Industrial Revolution.
Carmarthen Town History
Carmarthen has been heavily associated with the Arthurian figure of Merlin who was thought to have been born in a cave just outside the town. This belief features heavily in literature written at the time such as The Black Book of Carmarthen, Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History of the Kings of Britain and also The Mabinogion.
Steeped in mythology, Carmarthen is thought to be one of the oldest towns in Wales. Caerfyrddin, the Welsh name for Carmarthen, translates to ‘Merlin’s Castle’ and is thought by many to have been influenced by the Arthurian magician, Merlin.
Local legend has it that Merlin made a prophecy regarding an Old Oak Tree (Merlin’s Oak) that when it fell, then Carmarthen town would follow.
Founded in the Roman era as ‘Moridunum’, Carmarthen was established as a civitas around the time of AD 75. Carmarthen’s history lies within the Middle Ages when Carmarthen was split into two towns, Old Carmarthen and New Carmarthen.
This prophecy was taken so seriously by the townspeople that Merlin’s Oak was maintained up until it finally had to be taken down in 1970. Fragments of the Old Oak can be found in the foyer of St Peter’s Civic Hall.
Before the reign of William II, Carmarthen was

Mother’s Day first all digital, 3D multiplex six-screen, fully air conditioned cinema.
This Mothers Day, there are lots and lots of treats to be bought in Carmarthen to make your mum feel special. Carmarthen town has plenty to offer with its huge selection of shops, making it the perfect place to start looking for those Mothers Day gifts.
Remember, Mother’s Day is 10th March this year, so pop down to Carmarthen now to find her that perfect gift.
The oldest part of Carmarthen is full of independently owned shops. A stroll up from the town centre past Carmarthen’s Guildhall will take you to the historic King Street. Dotted along King Street are privately owned boutique clothes shops displaying current fashion trends, gift shops full to the brim of special presents, jewellers showcasing their most beautiful jewels and home furnishing shops to browse through. King Street also has a great selection of cafes and delicatessens offering mouth wateringly delicious foods.
Gift Check List Visit the florist and choose the perfect bouquet for your mum. Ask them if they can deliver on Mothers Day for you, this will be a lovely addition to her day. Chocolate treats are at the top of every mums list this Mothers Day, especially if they’re her favourites.
Head back down toward the Guildhall in the centre of Carmarthen and you’ll find your way to Carmarthen Market. Dating back to Roman Times, the market was redeveloped and opened in 2009 by Princess Anne. The indoor market is bursting with local businesses and produce including antique jewellers, arts and crafts, fashion and of course the all important food hall. You are bound to find something worthy for mum in the market hall.
Book in advance for her spa or beauty treatments, collect her favourite pampering treats to prepare her for beauty treatments. Remember the card! Pick your mum a card that best reflects your relationship with your mum. A sincere hand written message will mean more to your mum than the verse written in the card.
If you’re looking for more mainstream shops, then take a walk on from the Market and you’ll soon be in the midst of Carmarthen’s latest addition, St Catherine’s Walk. Opened in 2010 as part of Carmarthen’s redevelopment, St Catherine’s Walk is home to a number of shops and restaurants to keep you entertained for hours. St Catherine’s Walk has a great selection of clothes shops and has Europe’s

Easter Top Tips for baking the perfect cupcake!
Easter Nest Cupcakes Making cupcakes is simple. Making Easter themed cupcakes is even easier, and is fun for the kids! Ingredients for the cupcakes: 220g butter or margarine, room temperature 220g caster sugar 2 large eggs, beaten 220g self-raising flour, sifted 1 tsp of Vanilla Essence
Cheap to make and easy to bake, cupcakes are the perfect treat all through the year. Recently, cupcakes have become the most popular trend with a great selection of recipe books and online sites dedicated to the cupcake. There are now numerous amounts of blogs advising you on the best techniques and ones that offer you expert tips on fl avouring and design.
Ingredients for the icing: For the Butter Cream: 80g unsalted butter, room temperature 250g icing sugar 25g low fat vanilla yogurt Mini eggs to decorate Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 5. Line a cup cake or muffin tray with paper cases. Beat together the butter and caster sugar until light and fluff y. Add the eggs a little at a time. Fold in the flour and Vanilla Essence. Spoon the mixture into the paper cases until half full. Bake in the oven until golden brown and springy to touch or test using a skewer, if it comes away clean the cakes are ready. Leave them to cool on a wire rack.
Cupcake design has become a huge trend in itself, with more and more extravagant designs coming through, ranging from the cute and simple floral design to the more complicated animal shaped cupcake.
Meanwhile prepare the butter cream. Begin by beating the butter and icing sugar until pale and well mixed, ideally using an electric mixer. Add the yogurt and continue to beat on medium to high speed until the icing is fluff y. The longer you beat the lighter the icing.
The increasing popularity of cupcakes means that making them is no longer a specialist area. Anyone can make cupcakes and there are plenty of resources now available to buy in most supermarkets. A great range of products are available including pretty paper cases, ready made wafer flowers, chocolate shapes and shimmer sprays galore to decorate your cupcake and make it look like a professional job.
Spoon the icing into a piping bag fi tted with a star piping nozzle. In a circular motion, swirl the icing around each cake. Decorate with mini eggs.

Motoring Simple Steps to Buying a Car Buying a car is an exciting prospect for many buyers, especially for first time buyers. Here are a few helpful tips to consider when buying a car.
• Qualified experienced friendly staff. • FREE valve, balancing & fitting on new tyres. • Motorcycles & 4X4’s also catered for. • New 4 Wheel Laser alignment system. • Same day or while you wait service. We’ll beat anyone’s price! Any make, any size! Call in Today!
Draw up a shortlist of potential makes and models. This will help you determine what kind of car you are looking for. Make a note of whether you are looking for a small, medium or large car and whether there are any makes you are more interested in. Visit your local car showrooms and garages to see what they have to offer. This can give you a good idea of prices. It also allows you to have a good look at the cars and decide whether you like the overall appearance of them.

Now for the fun part, take them out for a test drive. Ask to take them for a spin around the area to see how they are to drive. Take notice of what the gears feel like and how long they take to reach the speed limit. Ask yourself how it feels to drive them. Do you enjoy driving it, or do you find it difficult to handle? What condition is the car interior? Asking yourself these questions is bound to determine which car is your favourite.
When you have a good idea of what you are looking for and what car fi ts your needs and budget, buying the car will be the easiest bit.
Once you’ve decided which car is your favourite, check the running costs. How much is the insurance going to cost you? How much is the cars road tax? Taking into consideration the cars monthly costs will help you get a rounded idea of its overall cost. Take a look at finance options to gain that the dealer provides to see if they can offer you anything better. Usually dealer finance includes extras like free courtesy cars and free road tax for a year, so it’s well worth looking into. Next, negotiate with your dealer. Show the dealer you are interested in the car. See how far they are willing to drop the initial price of the car and what extras they are willing to include.

Visit the award-winning Cwmcerrig Farmshop and Grill Our Texel lamb and Hereford beef are reared here at Cwmcerrig to high standards of animal welfare. Our welcoming grill restaurant offers a wide selection of meals and attracts customers from far and wide. Our deli counter is bursting with a fantastic selection of delicious items.
The award-winning Cwmcerrig Farmshop is the No 1 choice for the finest local produce in West Wales.
We are the Watkins family (Roland, Reuben, Stuart, Tom and Davina) and we’ve been farming here since the 1950s. In 2008, we decided to make the big leap and open up a shop here at Cwmcerrig. We don’t like to do things by halves so we built a whopping 8000 sq ft facility with a restaurant, too! The shop opened in 2009 and we’ve not looked back. Since opening, we’ve won many awards, including several national farm shop of the year competitions. In the Taste of Wales awards, the shop won the’ local sourcing’ section and the firm’s sirloin steak took Gold in the beef section. Other recent prizes include two National Trust Fine Farm Produce Awards. We’re proud of the meat we produce here at Cwmcerrig and are delighted to now be selling it direct to our customers in our shop.
We have –
Delicious home-made pies, quiches, scotch eggs, traditional homemade Welsh favourites such as rissoles and faggots, a fantastic range of cheese, including some cracking local ones, cooked meats (we cook the ham, pork, beef and turkey here at Cwmcerrig) and paté, home-made coleslaw, potato salad and stuffing, olives and other antipasti, homemade cottage pie, chicken korma and chicken tikka masala. In short, there’s something for everyone at Cwmcerrig, with the accent firmly on fresh and local.
We hope you enjoy visiting Cwmcerrig as much as we enjoy working here!
