Carmarthen Castle No traveller through Carmarthen can fail to notice County Hall, the French-inspired mock ‘chateau’ that commands the main road to the west. How many of them, until recently can have guessed that beneath this grand building lay a real castle, a medieval stronghold that was once one of the largest in Wales? Because it is only in recent years that the earlier remains have been fully revealed through clearance, excavation and conservation. From its origins as an earthwork castle, Carmarthen Castle was founded as a springboard for the Norman invasion of south west Wales, and is now a massive stone fortress whose remains can be seen today. As the headquarters of the Norman Kings in south Wales, it was one of the most important castles in the country. It was the hub around which the medieval walled town of Carmarthen developed, and it still dominates the Visit www.carmartheneye.co.uk townscape. After the Middle Ages the castle became
ruinous but continued to be used as a gaol until the 1920s. The site returned to being an administrative centre with the demolition of the gaol in 1938 and the construction of County Hall in 1939-55, and in this sense the castle continues to flourish. The enhancement works were begun by Dyfed County Council in 1993 and have continued under Carmarthenshire County Council, and managed by the Welsh design company TACP. Meanwhile archaeologists from Cambria Archaeology have been following every step of the work. The programme has been funded by grants from both County Councils, and from Cadw, the Welsh Development Agency, the European Community and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The castle has now been opened to the public to explore the last surviving parts of the castle. They include a massive twin-tower gatehouse, several other medieval 4 towers, and remnants of Telephone: 08443 911618 the County Gaol.

It follows an official opening, a schools day, plus an exclusive evening for Golden Ticket winners. Xcel Bowl has created around 20 jobs and regenerates around half of the vacated property. Profits from the facility will help fund community projects. A second phase is proposed to be delivered in future years to incorporate a 500-seat auditorium, a conference and meeting venue, debt counselling centre, café/ restaurant, catering training, luncheon club provision and office accommodation. Carmarthenshire County Council has supported the project. Leader Cllr Kevin Madge said: “It’s fantastic to see such a great project being delivered in Carmarthen.
Xcel Bowling opens its doors
“This is the only facility of its kind in Carmarthenshire and I am certain it will be a success with families and young people both in and around the county. “I would encourage everyone to come and visit here to see what a wonderful bowling alley we have on our doorstep.”
The new Xcel Bowling Alley has officially opened its doors in Carmarthen. The first class facility, the only one of its kind in Carmarthenshire, has 12 bowling lanes.
It also houses a cafe, a play and games area, and caters for birthday parties or special events. The new attraction, developed by Towy Community Church at the former St Ivel premises in Johnstown, opens to the public on Saturday, June 15. Visit www.carmartheneye.co.uk

Cycling in Carmarthen This summer, the 100th Edition of the Tour de France will be taking place in the beautiful French countryside. Following the success of Bradley Wiggins in last years Tour, more and more of us are taking inspiration from the competitors and dusting our bikes off. Although there aren’t many designated cycle paths in Carmarthen, there are areas where you can take your family for a leisurely afternoon bike ride. CARMARTHEN PARK Carmarthen Park has long been associated with cycling being the home of Wales’ first ever velodrome, opened in 1900, and is still in working condition today. Carmarthen Park is an ideal location for a bike ride if you have a young family as it is commonly used as a recreational area for many different activities and events. There is a play area for the kids and The Tea Shop for you to stop off for refreshments. THE MILLENNIUM COASTAL PATH If you’re looking for a slightly longer cycle path to try your hands at then why not hop in the car and travel to the Millennium Coastal Path in Llanelli. Set on the coastline of the Burry Estuary, the Coastal Path is a traffic free route covering a 12 mile stretch. Perfect for a relaxing walk or bike ride, the route is mainly flat making it easy to cycle with your family.
PEMBREY COUNTRY PARK Set against the Gower Peninsula, overlooking Carmarthen Bay, Pembrey Country Park is one of Wales’ top visitor attractions and is a lovely location for a family day out on the bikes. Pembrey has a 2 mile long off road cycle track which is fun for beginners and families. You are welcome to bring your own bike, or you can hire one of the Park’s mountain bikes. Pembrey Country Aprk has designated picnic and barbecue areas for you to use and also a Giant Adventure Playground for the kids to play in while you’re relaxing. CELTIC TRAIL WEST For the more avid cyclists out there who are looking for a challenge, the Celtic Trail West is a 146 mile bike ride beginning in Carmarthen and passing through the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The route is mainly traffic free and ideal for cyclists wanting to test themselves on a route that takes advantage of Wales’ natural terrain. You have two options to take advantage of: The Challenge is the longer of the two at 146 miles, beginning in Carmarthen and taking you through to heart of neighbouring Pembrokeshire. The second route, The Weekender is a mere 42 miles long and is a good chance for you to enjoy the scenery of Capel Sion in Llanelli, The Millenium Coastal Path and the River 17 Towy on your way back into Carmarthen.

Tips on Finding a Local Tradesman in Carmarthen Finding a tradesman who you can trust to carry out work in your property can be a very daunting process, especially as you want to get it right the first time. If you find a tradesman you can trust then you will be set for the next few years if any little incidents occur. WORD OF MOUTH One of the most common and successful methods of finding a reliable tradesman is through word of mouth from friends, family, neighbours and colleagues. If they’ve used an electrician or plumber in the last few months and have had a positive experience with them and have a well rounded idea of well they performed in the short and long term. You’ll probably be more likely to give them a call and hopefully receive the same experience.
CALL A FEW DIFFERENT TRADESMEN If you’ve found a few different tradesmen that have had good recommendations either from your friends and family or the Council, then there’s no harm in calling all of them and arranging to meet them at separate times to discuss the work needed and cost. Ask them to write up a job specification and cost estimate for your record, then you can compare the level of work they’ve suggested and the amount it will cost you.
CHECK THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS To double check that the tradesman you’ve chosen is the definitely the one you want to hire then have another look at the recommendations you have researched. Find out via the internet whether they are registered with a trades industry body like Check RECOMMENDATIONS a Trade, look over their council recommendations Your local council may have a list of local builders, again and it wouldn’t hurt to ask them for their own plumbers, electricians, roofers etc. who have references and researching their previous work. undergone thorough checks via the council. Council Although this may not guarantee the level and quality recommended tradesmen will give you extra peace of of work you will receive, it will help you confirm 20 your choice. Visit when www.carmartheneye.co.uk Telephone: 08443 911618 mind you’re looking.
