The Spirit of Enterprise

A Shop with its Heart in Pembrokeshire The Spirit of Enterprise project provides an opportunity for those in Pembrokeshire wishing to start their own business, to ‘test trade’ in a risk free environment for up to three months. During this time budding entrepreneurs will be able to sell products that they have made themselves in a dedicated, high street, retail space.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN JOINING THE PROJECT? As long as you are not already running your business and you are based in Pembrokeshire, Spirit of Enterprise could help you. As well as providing retail space or desk facilities, being a PBI project, you get access to a wide range of business support and advice just when you need it most. PBI’s business advisers will be on hand to guide you through your test-trading experience and you will also receive dedicated training from external business experts.

However, the project is not just limited to artists and craftspeople. Spirit of Enterprise, based at 44 High Street, Haverfordwest, also has office space which can be used by those people looking to start up in selfemployment, running a service business. Downstairs, Cafe 44 also accepts test-traders, specifically those making cakes and other similar tasty treats. These will be served in the authentic Italian barista style coffee bar.

The Spirit of Enterprise project has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013, which is funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

Add these ingredients together and you have a unique shopping experience in Haverfordwest. With new traders being added every four weeks, each monthly visit to the shop will be different, with different stock and new traders showcasing their work.

Visit www.haverfordwesteye.co.uk

More details on the project can be found by visiting www.spiritofenterprise.org.uk or via www.pbi.org.uk or you can call the shop directly on 01437 760693.

SAW Cymru members health and fitness is an area Simon is keen to develop and links in well with his teaching of Physical Education.

Pembrokeshire Weightlifting Federation has created a new project ‘SAW Cymru’, a high performance Olympic Weightlifting and Strength and Conditioning centre specifically created to aid Pembrokeshire’s aspiring sports people to reach their potential.

Simon is very enthusiastic to develop the Sport of Olympic Weightlifting in Pembrokeshire and has an aim to coach local residents up to Welsh and British standard, with a specific aim for local lifters to achieve the Welsh squad for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in Queensland, Australia.

Based in Sir Thomas Picton Leisure Centre in Haverfordwest, SAW will be opening on the 5th August. The project lead at SAW Cymru and Chairperson of Pembrokeshire Weightlifting Simon Roach stated,

Coaching at this level is not unfamiliar to Simon. In the previous Weightlifting centre of excellence in which he managed, he coached many junior and senior lifters up to Welsh and British standard, three of which competed in the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Simon was also head coach for Team Wales at this prestigious event.

‘This is an exciting time for Pembrokeshire sports people, SAW will be providing an outstanding coaching service and combined with its excellent equipment, will be on par with some of the top training centres in the UK.’ Simon will be working closely with the Scarlets, WRU Performance coaches and also Jonny Llewhellin – WRU Player Development Officer. The Pembrokeshire Schools Under 18 Rugby Squad and Scarlets West Under 16’s squad have already been booked into SAW for conditioning sessions. These are the most promising Rugby players in the County and will soon be starting their pre-season training. A strong partnership has been created between SAW and the Scarlets.

SAW is not the only project Pembrokeshire Weightlifting has under way. Pembrokeshire Weightlifting has been working with Sport Pembrokeshire, the Sports Development Department within Pembrokeshire County Council and Dragon LNG ‘Energy in Wales’ to set up a Secondary Schools project and in September there will be a 5 x 60 Weightlifting & strength training club at Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Ysgol Sir Thomas Picton and Ysgol Pembroke. This will also see the start of a 5x60 weightlifting league.

Simon Continues, ‘I still believe too many sportspeople in Pembrokeshire carry out the wrong type of conditioning for their sport. Although the science behind conditioning can be complex, a sports person basically has to do in training what they do in competition. Therefore, there is little point an athlete or team games player using multi-gym equipment where they are only using one or two muscle groups at a time, contracting their muscles slowly and often sitting down.’

‘The centre will be open in the evenings where coaching will take place for Olympic weightlifting, further coaching sessions for sports people and members can also join SAW and carry out their own training without joining the coached sessions’. All information about SAW, how to join, opening times and coaching sessions are on our website. www.strengthacademywales.com Facebook: SAW Cymru Twitter @academy_wales

‘This is the way members will be training at SAW, training correctly for their sport and receiving an excellent coaching service, support and advice.’ The centre is also open to junior and adult members, who want to develop their health and fitness, learn how to train safely and correctly and learn how to plan their own individual programmes. A History of Haverfordwest’s Trade The successes and tragic failures

halted and decelerated by the Black Death in 1348. The Black Death caused a serious de-population of over 50%, significantly reducing Haverfordwest’s economy and working age population, resulting in the diminution of trade. Large parts of the town became abandoned to the point where the town was significantly smaller than in the 1300’s up until the 17th Century which was not helped by the town being burned by the French allies of Owain Glyndwr in 1405.

By Aled Nelmes During the mid 1200’s Haverfordwest’s woollen cloth trade was booming with most of the industries produce being distributed by sea using the Cleddau as its main access point to shipping around the world using the busy tidal quay on the river below the “New” Bridge. This flourishing trade was one of the biggest contributions to Haverfordwest’s booming development in the 1200’s eventually leading to Haverfordwest receiving its first marcher charter from William Marshall, 1st Earl of Pembroke some time between 1213 and 1219 and obtained the lucrative trading privileges of an English borough.

Despite suffering from the Black Death and various attacks in its early history, Haverfordwest suffered less than most towns in Wales from such depredations. Haverfordwest today has the air of a typical small country market town, but the centre still conveys the feel of the important mediaeval borough and you can still hear the whispers of its conflicting past.

Things were looking up for Haverfordwest’s development into the 1300’s which was abruptly

Summer Motoring Tips in the summer take non drowsy medication, keep some tissues handy and your sunglasses close so that you can whip them on as soon as you feel your eyes becoming irritated.

With the summer sun shining high in the sky you may be thinking about packing up and taking a summer road trip to some your favourite beaches around Pembrokeshire/Carmarthen/Bedminster. If you’re taking a longer journey in the car then the thought of driving on a hot summer’s day probably isn’t filling you with joy. But do not fear for we have come up with a few helpful tips to make the whole driving experience a little more bearable for you, your passengers and your car.

DRIVING COUNTRY ROADS If your trip takes you through a few country roads then remember to drive a little more carefully. You will come across obstacles like tractors, cattle or sheep being herded and narrower roads which will require patience and distance so that you can pass through them safely.

BEFORE YOUR JOURNEY Having a quick once over your car before you set off is a must. High temperatures can cause punctures to tyres and lead to overheating in your car engine. To avoid such possibilities check your tyres are at the correct pressure as specified in your manufacturer’s handbook and make sure that your engines coolant level is correct. Bring a spare bottle of water to cool down your engine on stops and some extra coolant just in case.

KEEP YOUR KEYS CLOSE

DURING THE JOURNEY

If you are going on holiday then you will definitely be wanting to save as much money as possible on fuel. Opening your windows wide open causes extra drag especially when driving at a fast speed and air conditioning uses fuel to work so keep use to a minimum. On a hot day, the inside of a parked car can reach up to 80°c so to reduce this you may want to invest in a windscreen shield which are only a few pound and park in a shaded area. If you have dogs please remember not to leave them in the car at all as they may suffer from suffocation.

There is nothing worse than losing or misplacing your keys on holiday. Remember to bring a spare pair with you just incase and bring your handbook so that you can check if there is another way to get in to your car. If you’re off on a beach trip out your keys in a sand and water proof container. SAVING FUEL

If you have a long journey of over 2 hours ahead of you then you may be a little worried at the prospect of getting tired while driving. The night before your journey have a good night sleep, and fill your car with plenty of water and refreshments to keep you going. It is advised that you take regular 20 minute breaks (maybe every 2 hours), avoid heavy meals which can sometimes lead to drowsiness and get as much fresh air as possible. If you suffer from hayfever

A garage that aims to go that extra mile With one year under their belts, JT Auto Services have gone from strength to strength... AS well as employing James Perkins and Chris Riggs, JT has also asked another former colleague, Matthew South, to join the JT team. Dan Stanton has also recently started on his apprenticeship. With honest and impartial advice to customers and a friendly staff attitude, the JT ethos has paid dividends. The pick-up and drop off service has also been a great success with customers finding it easier to book in for MOT/services/tyres and so on. JT has also added two more vehicles to the courtesy car fleet - another benefit for customers. With a large stock of tyres, a paint refurbishment service through Sior Jones of Paint FX, and electrical diagnostics, everything your vehicle needs is covered at JT Auto Services.

The garage is open 8.30am-5.30pm, Monday to Friday, and 8am-12.30pm on Saturdays, making it even easier to fit essential motor maintenance around your busy schedule.

Servicing • MOT Repairs • Tyres

JT Autos would like to thank all customers and suppliers for their appreciated support in making their first year in business an enjoyable success. Visit www.haverfordwesteye.co.uk
