Christmas Traditions CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS

Christmas is that time of year when we spend more time with our loved ones, indulge ourselves in rich food and boozy drinks and fa la la la la la with Christmas carols to our hearts content. But have you ever wondered why we decorate our homes with Christmas trees, hung stockings from our chimneys and counted down the days to Christmas Day with an advent calendar. These traditions are what makes Christmas, well Christmas, but why do we practice them? CHRISTMAS TREE Each year, we proudly decorate our Christmas trees with baubles, twinkly lights, Christmas ornaments, ribbons, stars and an Angel making it the centrepiece of our home at Christmas. In Britain, this tradition began when a young Queen Victoria had requested for a tree to be placed in her room at Christmastime as her German cousins had done when she had visited them. Victoria loved her Christmas Trees and once she married Prince Albert in 1840 the tradition of the Christmas Tree became much more popular throughout Great Britain. Since then, the Christmas Tree is now a permanent fixture in our homes and is often used as a symbol of the season. Each year, Norway presents London with a Christmas Tree as a token of gratitude for the part Great Britain played in supporting Norway during World War 2. ADVENT CALENDARS Another German tradition adopted by us Brits, the Advent Calendar counts down the first 24 days of December. Advent is a Christian practice which marks off the four Sundays leading up to the birth of Christ on Christmas day. It is thought that the first occurrences of a calendar being used to mark down the 24 days originated in Germany in the early nineteenth century. The German Lutherans would draw a line of chalk on each door, each day, until Christmas day arrived. Some of the wealthier families would light a candle and place them in a wreath much like the ones we decorate our homes with today.

‘And their stockings were hung on the chimney with care in the hope that St Nicholas soon would be there’. On Christmas Eve children hang their stockings upon their chimney or bedpost, eagerly awaiting the gifts Father Christmas will bring them. The story of the Christmas stocking comes from the story of St Nicholas. Visiting a village St Nicholas heard of an old man who had lost all of his wealth and couldn’t afford to provide dowries for his three beautiful daughters to get married. After hearing of this sad tale, St Nicholas visited their home late one night with a bag full of gold and dropped it down the girls chimney and into one of their stockings which were hanging up to dry. He then returned for two more nights to drop a bag full of gold into the other two sisters stockings. The old man and his daughters were overjoyed with these gifts of money and the three daughters were able to marry, living happily ever after. FATHER CHRISTMAS AND HIS RED SUIT When we think of Father Christmas, the image that greets us is that of a jolly old man, with a white beard, dressed in a red suit with white fur trim, a red hat, a belt with a big brass buckle and of course is black shiny boots. But where did this image come from? Many people believe that this idea of Father Christmas came from the Coca-Cola Christmas adverts that we all know and love, but infact Father Christmas as we know him today was designed by illustrator Thomas Nash who used to illustrate for American publication Harper’s Weekly during the nineteenth century. So when you’re decorating your Christmas tree, hanging your stockings on the chimney and opening the doors of your advent calendar, think back to the reasons why we celebrate these traditions and your Christmas will become all the more special to you and your family.

Easy Christmas Recipes 200g of Desiccated Coconut or Icing Sugar for rolling METHOD Pour all the cream into a saucepan and bring to the boil. Chop the chocolate into small pieces and place in a large bowl. Pour the boiling cream into the bowl and stir until the chocolate and cream are well blended. Cool the mix and leave in the fridge for up to 2 hours until mixture is solid. Scoop out teaspoons (or use an ice cream scoop) of the mixture and roll into small balls with your hands. Sprinkle the coconut or icing sugar onto a plate and roll the chocolate ball until evenly covered. Leave the truffles in a cool place.

Christmas just isn’t Christmas if you don’t make at least one or two small treats to welcome your guests into your home with. Here are a few quick and easy recipes so you can always be prepared for unexpected visitors.

Mulled Wine

On those cold wintery nights, there is nothing better than a hot glass of spicy mulled wine while you’re putting your feet up. Mulled Wine is very easy to prepare and is a cold winters night in a glass! A lovely way to welcome your guests into your home, mulled wine instantly fills you with warmth. INGREDIENTS 2 Bottles of Red Wine (eg, Chianti) 2 Cinnamon Sticks 6 Whole Cloves 1 Whole Nutmeg 1 tbsp of Whole Allspice Rind of one Lemon 1 Orange, rind and juice 200g Caster Sugar

Heart & Star Cheese Biscuits Perfect for the cheese plate once you’ve finished your Christmas dinner, these heart and star shaped cheese biscuits are simple and moreish. INGREDIENTS 200g of Mature Cheddar 250g of Butter (softened) 200g of Plain Flour One Egg Whisked Poppy Seeds to decorate METHOD Mix the butter and the cheese in a bowl until fully mixed into together. Slowly add the flour while mixing to form a dough. Preheat the oven to 180c or gas mk 4 Once the cheese dough is formed, using a rolling pin, roll the dough until it is 2-3mm thick. With a star shaped or heart shaped pastry cutter, cut out your cheese biscuits and place on a baking tray. Once all your hearts and stars are laid out, whisk the egg and with the pastry brush, dab a little egg onto each one. To decorate, sprinkle some poppy seeds on to each biscuit. Place in the oven for 20 mins or until the biscuits are golden in colour.

METHOD In a large saucepan over a medium heat, add the sugar and lemon rind with the juice and the rind of the orange. Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg and allspice into the mix. Then pour in the red wine. Leave to simmer until the sugar has completely dissolved into the wine and then bring to the boil. Leave the mulled to simmer for up to 20 minutes so that the spices can infuse the wine. Serve your mulled wine in hot glasses.

Snowball Truffles

Treat your guests to some yummy bite size Snowball Truffles which are easy to make and will keep little mouths and big mouths satisfied until the Turkey is cooked. INGREDIENTS 200ml of Double Cream 200g of Chocolate (can be dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate)

Preparing Your Car for Winter Keeping your vehicle well maintained is important all year round, but as the winter draws on us, it is even more important to check that it is in full working order. For example, worn tyres don’t grip the road properly in wet, slippery conditions as well as tyres with a good, deep tread. Check all your exterior lights are working correctly and that your windscreen wiper blades are in good condition. Check your oil gauge, coolant and washer fluid levels. Always make sure you have over half a tank of fuel left before you embark on those long trips over country roads. The worst thing would be to run out of fuel when the night has fallen. Here’s our tips for you to run a few last minutes checks:

minimum and maximum markers. It is also a good idea to invest in a sufficient anti-freeze coolant. If you’re unsure what to check for, look in your handbook or visit your local garage who will be offering winter car checks.

CAR BATTERY During the winter, your car battery will run down due to the colder weather. It is recommended that you check your battery at least once a week to ensure that it is well charged. This especially important if your battery is over four years old

When replacing your screen wash for winter, make sure the concentration is suitable for very cold conditions. Ideally it should accommodate temperatures which drop to -35c.

TYRES It is very important that you check the overall condition of your tyres. Damage like splits or bulges could mean that the tyre pressure is incorrect. Winter tyres or snow socks are available if the weather is very snowy so you may consider buying some of them. SCREENWASH

WIPER BLADES Check your wiper blades for damage and replace if necessary. When wiper blades become frozen, they can do a lot of damage to your windscreen.

COOLANT Check that your coolant levels are between the
