Short Films Accidental Beach A music video about Accidental Beach in Edmonton. Director: Jason Kuchar, Edmonton, Alberta Jason Kuchar is a musician and film producer from Edmonton, currently performing with several bands (Electric Audrey 2, Night Howl, Whyte Ave Womprats). Despite having no education or training in film studies, his ludicrous short films have won several awards and have been screened in numerous film festivals across North America.

The Preparator Take a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the role of an art museum preparator from arrival of artwork all the way through to final display. This short mini-doc features Contemporary Art Gallery, Esker Foundation’s Head Preparator, Doug Haslam, and the work of artists Jeffrey Gibson and Nep Sidhu. Director: Aquiles Ascencion, Calgary, Alberta Aquiles Ascencion is a Calgary-based producer and director originally from Venezuela. Ascencion graduated from the Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, Geneva, Switzerland in 2003, with further studies in Writing for Film and Television, graduating in 2013 from the Vancouver Film School. Ascencion has a background in acting, collaborating with renowned directors in Europe, at the time, including Claude Stratz, André Steiger and acted in Alain Tanner’s feature film “Paul s’en va”; (2004).

Quarantinis While three ladies video chat, they discover the power of a quarantine + martinis. Director: Girl Brain, Edmonton, Alberta Everything in our ‘Girl Brain @ Home Sketch Series’ was filmed with maximum social distancing. Like, no one was ever in the same house, or even neighborhood. Not even the production crew - a weird dude named Frederick - who used video chat software and did everything remotely.

Illusion: The Fear Thinking that she has been freed from the grip of her pimp, a young sex worker named Dice who works in the street is surprised by her assailant, who reminds her that she is his property and she belongs to him. Director: Valécia Pépin, Edmonton, Alberta I have been living in Alberta since the fall 2014 and since then all I have been doing is chasing my dreams. Illusion was born in Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in September 2017 as part of Entr’art , an opportunity offered by the Regroupement Artistique Francophone de l’Alberta (RAFA). Then, Illusion was read at l’UniThéâtre, in January 2018, as part of À Voix Haute. My second version was presented in 2019, as part of Coup d’oeil. Today, my goal is to bring Illusion to another level. I am also a radio host and music manager for Radio Cité 97,9 FM!

One Bad Day An eager detective interrogates an evasive suspect, but it’s clear that they both have secrets. Director: Max Montesi, Devon, Alberta Max Montesi is an actor and cinematographer, known for “The Magicians”, “Sacred Lies”, “The 100”.

Perspective It is one thing to break away from societal expectations but it’s another thing to know if you want to. Where is the line between what you believe and what you have been programmed to believe since childhood? Through dramatic movement and music, this project explores the struggle to recognize your voice and show your own colours in order to make authentic connections while being continually drowned by outside rules and propaganda. Director: Delanie Tiedemann, Tofield, Alberta Delanie is a graduate from the Motion Picture Arts program at Red Deer College and has worked as a producer, set designer, and as an actor in short films in Edmonton, Alberta. She is passionate about nurturing human connection and communication through art and storytelling. Her training in film, theatre, and education gives her practical knowledge for the artistic vision of the piece and the guidance needed for directing.

Black Acid Teenager tries acid for the first time while he should be babysitting his brother and sister. Director: Ben Metcalf, Okotoks, Alberta Ben Metcalf is an amateur film maker and music producer. Ben has been making electronic music for over 20 years but has only recently started making films. In fact Ben’s first and currently only finished film is a music video he made recently. It seemed a good idea at the time to make a music video for one of his owntracks, little did he know how hard it would be and how much he would love the challenge.

Ghosted The day in the life of a Medium with an extraordinary, yet burdensom gift: the ability to take over people’s hauntings. Director: Taya Walter, Calgary, Alberta Taya Walter is an emerging independent filmmaker from Calgary, Alberta who graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications Studies in 2015. She has worked in the directing department on various short film projects in her city, including assistant directing “Chasing Tears”, “Just Ask”, and “Lucid Dream” (music video for Calgarybased artist Hello Moth). She has directed the web series “High Strung”, which earned her an award of merit from the Southern Shorts Awards out of Roswell, Georgia, the short film “Ghosted”, as well as her feature film debut “From Hell, With Love”, which she also wrote, produced, and acted in.

We Are Crush A group of four women band together to make rock climbing more accessible in Banff, Alberta. Every run is a puzzle waiting to be solved, and if the Crush Collective has anything to do with it, gender norms will not be part of the equation. Director: Julia Gunst, Calgary, Alberta Julia Gunst grew up in Calgary, Alberta and explored her love for film in Montreal where she studied Communications. She has created short documentary projects for various arts organizations and recently completed a Video Production practicum at the Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity.

Melted Hearts A snowman who is tired of being on his own decides to “make” a friend in this CG animation which pays homage to classic stop motion films. Director: Cole Stevenson, Sherwood Park, Alberta Cole Stevenson is a 21-year-old actor, writer, director, and animator. Originally from Sherwood Park, Alberta, Cole is currently studying Computer Science at the University of Alberta with plans to pursue animation as a career.

Absence Absence is a short film following 13-year-old Kasey, her older brother, Mason, and her mother, Lauren, in the wake of her father’s mysterious disappearance. The family struggles to cope, while Kasey begins to believe that her father – a man deeply interested in UFO sightings and close encounters – may have been abducted by aliens. Director: Sarah Clarke, Edmonton, Alberta Sarah Clarke is a writer and director from Edmonton, Alberta. She graduated with a BFA in Film Production from the University of British Columbia in 2019, where she completed her first short films “Eggshells” and “Absence”. Drawing inspiration from video games and a lifelong love of fantasy and horror films, her work focuses around the supernatural and fantastic elements present in mundane life.

Form and Function A look into human perception, how humans evaluate possible interactions or affordances – and expectation revision. Through the lens of a shared experience – getting ready. Director: The Art Collective called: “Are You Artists or Cops?”, Edmonton, Alberta “Are you Artists or Cops?” is a new collective interested in exploring exploration.

Orwell’s Debut A family is confronted by their teenage son who tells them that their smart speaker is listening to them. Director: Thomas Stachura, Edmonton, Alberta As a youth, Thomas Stachura was a whiz with computers, inventing online card games and mastering programming. With inventiveness and a flair for entrepreneurship, his path led him to become CEO and co-founder of Pleasant Solutions, which contains the in-house Pleasant Studios. “Orwell’s Debut” for the Paranoid brand is Thomas’ directorial debut.

Touch My Skin It’s the story of two lovers in search of something that’s pure. Director: Greg Sorenson, Edmonton, Alberta Greg Sorenson is a New Media and Fine Art teacher from Edmonton, Alberta. He has been making short films since he was 11 and competing in short film festivals since he graduated high school. Gregos Matthews is a seasoned local actor and musician from Edmonton, Alberta who works in studio and performed on tour throughout Canada and the West Coast. Mia Haddad graduated from MacEwan University with a Diploma in Music Composition and a Bachelor of Music with a minor in Music Technology. In 2016 she provided sound design for the short film “Prevent the Cause” directed by Devin G. Squire.

Hacked Social media power-couple perform a social experiment where they only communicate with each other via picture for 30 days. But on the day of the husband’s return, what is originally seen as a cute display of love turns into a twisted horror show. Director: Erick Delgado, Edmonton, Alberta Born and raised in Mexico City and now a Vancouver local, Erick Delgado has been working as a writer, director and cinematographer in the world of storytelling and interactive media for over a decade. He has worked all over north America where he has shot TV Pilots, feature films, commercials and advertising. Additionally to filmmaking, Erick has shipped multiple AAA games and to this day continues to push the boundaries of interactive storytelling, attempting to blur the lines between games and film.

Midnight Lady Midnight Lady is a music video for Edmonton’s own Mallory Chipman and the Mystics’ third single from their debut album Aquarian. The video is an animated collage exploring the themes of the lyrics which seek to demystify the ‘witchy’, ‘black magic’, women of songs written by men. Director: Molly Little, Calgary, Alberta Molly Little is an animator and illustrator based in Calgary, Alberta. She holds a diploma in graphic design and illustration and is currently studying animation and character design at the Alberta University of the Arts.

The Wiles A lone Centurion flees his city that is under siege, as a dark enemy tries to find and destroy him. Director: Ryan Northcott & Kyle Tiernan, New Sarepta, Alberta Co-Director: Kyle Tiernan developed an early love for cinematography which has taken him around the world, working on a wide variety of projects including commercial. Kyle’s unique eye for natural light, paired with strong abilities in VFX allow him to tackle a broad spectrum of projects.

Shades of Worth An exploration of beauty and self-worth in Black women. Director: Nauzanin Knight, Edmonton, Alberta Nauzanin Knight is a Canadian writer/director/producer of Caribbean and Middle Eastern descent. Her stories reflect the uniqueness of her heritage as well as her international life. Nauzanin began her career in creative writing before directing film projects such as, “My Lyric I Never Knew” (CBC Canadian Reflections & GEM 2020); “From the Grassroots” (Bahai.org, Bicentenary); “Precarity” (Telus Optik On Demand). As a storyteller, Nauzanin is interested in exposing striking stories which tell us about the universality of human emotion despite diversity of human experience. She is cofounder and CEO of 1844 Studios Inc., a production company that creates thoughtprovoking, transformative content which resonates with audiences globally.

What Happened to Heritage Mall Take a step back in time, to the infancy of the 1980’s, and visit Heritage Mall. Its very existence hinged upon its ability to survive in an over-saturated, recession-era retail market. Director: Matthew Dutczak, Edmonton, Alberta For years, Matthew Dutczak has been documenting and preserving the history of Edmonton’s Malls (and more!) via his YouTube Channel: Best Edmonton Mall. Appointed as Edmonton’s unofficial “Mall Historian” by outlets such as StarMetro Edmonton, CBC, and 630 CHED, he is enthusiastic about sharing his passion for Edmonton’s history, in all its forms.

The Campaign Two step-brothers attempt to bond over Live Action Role Playing. Director: Jakob Densky, Calgary, Alberta Jakob Densky is an emerging film director/writer/producer from Kamloops, British Columbia currently living in Calgary, Alberta. Jakob’s style tends to fall in the comedy/drama realm, with realistic and gritty undertones, all tied together with a smirk. Jakob writes and directs projects ranging from advertisements to feature films and everything in between.

Bearcat A young woman attends a survivalist-themed birthday party hoping to avoid her ex. Dressed as a not-so-fierce bearcat, she fights her way through the night. Will she make it out alive? Director: Jenna Turk, Calgary, Alberta A theatremaker, Jenna has spent most of her career in Toronto’s indie theatre scene, but came to Calgary three years ago to take on the role of Artistic Associate at Theatre Calgary where she worked in new play development. Most recently, Jenna directed Nicolas Billon’s “Iceland” for Theatre Calgary, this winter she trained in puppetry at the Banff Puppet Intensive, and she is proud to be the dramaturg in residence for YOUth Riot – a creative writing program for queer youth. She is extremely grateful for Herland’s support and guidance on her first short, “Bearcat”.

Cut The Light Classmates Quinn and Kurt enter an old house to film a scary movie for a project. They soon realize that it is safer in the dark than in the light. Director: Anthony Seto, Matt Mckinney, Calgary, Alberta The co-directors’ first movie production together was a spoof on “The Lord of the Rings” for a Grade 9 English project. Two decades later, they began to collaborate to make short films. Anthony is a physician and medical school teacher. Matt is an actor and video producer. Both are beginner river surfers.

Paradise Motel - High Water After being diagnosed with a terminal disease, Patrick and Rowena decide to do a final road trip through the prairies. Narrative music video for the band Paradise Motel. Director: Adrian G. De la Pena, Edmonton, Alberta Adrian is a Mexican director/editor based in Edmonton, Alberta. Among his most outstanding work is the recently award winning short film “T – Minus” (2018) at the British Screenwriters Festival for Best Short. In 2014 he directed a segment for the International horror anthology World of death called Σ:Math with international distribution through a digital platform. During his career he has been commissioned to create music video clips for world-known punk-hardcore band Acidez and her music bands from Mexico and Argentina like Machingón, Katmandú and Dream Master.

Long Shorts As You Like It An animated adaptation of the famous play by William Shakespeare. It transposes the setting to a Southeast-Asian environment. Created in close collaboration with the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon and its director Prof. Michael Dobson. Director: Hannes Rall, Singapore Hannes Rall is Associate Chair Research and Associate Professor (tenured) at the School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University Singapore. He is also a successful director of independent animated short films. His films, primarily adaptations of classic literature, have been shown in over 650 film-festivals worldwide and won 72 international awards.

Avernus Successful businessman and golden boy, Jack Wells, is unscrupulous, immoral and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Along the way he has made many enemies – and today they’re out for revenge! Director: Simon Ross, United Kingdom Simon has spent much of his career shooting and editing. Starting out shooting documentaries, whilst editing trailers and promos on the side, he developed an interest in combining CGI and VFX with live action. This led to directing opportunities in commercials and going on to direct major campaigns for some of the world’s most recognizable brands, including BMW, Virgin and Oxfam. He has filmed everywhere from the Arctic ice sheet to the Congo jungle.

Beyond Curls & Kinks “Beyond Curls & Kinks” follows a group of women who are challenging beauty standards and empowering each other and the next generation to embrace their coily kinky curly hair. The film explores the complex relationship they have with their Afro-textured hair and issues such as self-esteem, confidence and identity and challenges society to see women and girls beyond their curls and kinks. Director: Osas Eweka-Smith, Canada Osas is passionate about telling stories that elevate the human spirit and bring out marginalized voices. She is the Founder and Organizer of the Edmonton Natural Hair Show.

Brides of Heaven “Brides of Heaven” is an experimental short film on the awareness of forced conversions and marriages of minor Hindu girls in the province of Sindh, Pakistan. The project was filmed and produced in Edmonton, Alberta. Director: Naeem Rabbani, Canada Naeem Rabbani is a Canadian digital media content producer whose work bridges music, social values, visual art and multimedia. Initially trained in screenplay writing and graphic design, Naeem developed a variety of digital media projects in Pakistan, Europe, the USA, and Canada focusing on Sufi music, life stories, and social justice. In 2016 he collaborated with some film enthusiasts from Red Deer, Alberta and created a forum to celebrate the cinematic culture of Central Alberta. Currently he is working on Sufi music fusion projects in collaboration with local and international artists. Naeem lives in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Flowers Sam is a death magnet. From a young age, everyone around him dies: his parents, foster parents, pets, priests, neighbours. Director: Pete Malicki, Australia Pete Malicki has spent the last decade as a playwright and theatre producer, running the world’s largest short play festival Short+Sweet Sydney, and seeing his work performed over 1,500 times in 20 countries. My focus has always been on the audience but live production just doesn’t have the reach of other formats.

Glory Days “Glory Days”is the story of Tommy Young, a washed-up rockstar who works in a guitar shop with his long time friend, Ty. Tommy refuses to accept the person he once was, not even acknowledging his own music. When a mysterious young woman starts to question Tommy on his past, he is finally forced to come to terms with the inglorious details of himself Director: Kama Sood, Canada Kama Sood is a Vancouver-born and raised director. He is attracted to character-driven stories that are raw, humanistic, and get in touch with our emotional sides. His most recent short film, “Glory Days”, won Best Student Production at the 2020 Leo Awards, along with a Best International Director nomination at the Oregon Short Film Festival. His prior short film, The “Bus Stop”, won Best Student Film at the Whistler Film Festival, Best North American Short Film at VISAFF, along with another Leo Award nomination. Kama has worked internationally as well, currently in post-production in a child sexual exploitation awareness short documentary for Beyond Borders Canada, filmed on location in Phnom Penh’s most dangerous and poverty stricken neighbourhoods. Kama recently obtained a Bachelors Degree in Motion Picture Arts at Capilano University.

Joey Boy Joe has made up his mind: he’s enlisted to go back to war after learning of his father’s death. On the day of his departure, his fiancé Maria rushes in to change his mind. When the decision to leave is all but made, something strange happens that will change their lives forever. Director: Mark Matechuk, Canada Mark is an independent film writer and director from Toronto, Ontario who started garnering some recognition on “Funny or Die” and YouTube, garnering over 30 million views with various shorts. One of his shorts “The Douche” was officially selected to the Friars Club Comedy Festival in recent years and is committed to making insightful, highly produced off-beat comedies for the film festival circuit.

Lana Gets Her Talk A cinematic observation of Indigenous artist Lana Whiskeyjack as she works to complete a mixed-media sculpture of a tortured face – the face of her uncle. This brief study of an artist and her work helps us come to some understanding of the trauma experienced by Canada’s Indigenous people in the Indian residential school system, of its enduring effects on the children of survivors of the IRS, and of one woman’s journey to recover what was lost: dignity, identity, and voice. A story of resilience, Lana’s journey speaks of the power of Indigenous “ways of being” in our time. Director: Beth MacKenzie, Canada Beth Wishart MacKenzie is an independent documentary filmmaker based in Edmonton, Alberta. Using film she seeks to communicate the richness and complexity of cultural-religious life in Canada and to examine the challenges multicultural coexistence presents to Canadians. Her prior experience in the discipline of Comparative Religious Studies allows her to bring an informed and sensitive perspective to her documentary film work and to effectively interpret the symbolic codes and spiritual sensibility of the individuals and communities she engages with. As a socially engaged documentary filmmaker, Beth seeks to use the creative medium of film to build community in Canada.

Left Hit Valérie, a former high-level fencer, dedicates herself to training the young people of her club. She invests a lot of hopes in Hicham, a 17-year-old with huge athletic potential, who lives in a foster home. Through the years, she has developed a near maternal attachment for him. As summer holidays arrive, Valerie learns that Hicham has decided to leave the club. Director: Alexandre LABARUSSIAT, France After a Master’s degree of Cinema at the University of Paris 8 Saint-Denis and the directing of several self-produced short films, Alexandre Labarussiat directed “La ville est calme”, released in 2012, freely inspired by a short story by Ray Bradbury (OCS broadcast, selections in Rhode Island, Strasbourg...). Alexandre Labarussiat is currently working on his first feature film. His next short “Hit on the Left” is inspired by his years of fencing.The screenplay won the First Prize of the Eure Screenplay Contest and was also selected at the Talents en Courts.

Malcolm Through the teachings of Malcolm X, a young Asian-American college student journeys from self-hate toward self-love. Director: Jimmy Vi, Canada Jimmy Vi is a Toronto-based director whose work synthesizes elements of careful art direction grounded in the realism of lived experience. Working across a wide range of projects, he’s garnered millions of views collaborating with clients such as Footlocker, Universal, and Sony Music. By crafting insightful stories told with a purpose, he’s focused on elevating diverse narratives into the realm of representation.

Not Your Average Bear A daring robbery pulled off by the most unlikely of culprits. What an average man will do when pushed to his limits. Director: Cliff Skelton, Canada Cliff was born and raised on a small ranch in the scenic countryside of Alberta. At age 20, he ventured to New York City to train at the HB Actors Studio under the great William Hickey. Within a year, he found himself in Italy shooting with top photographers for fashion magazines across Europe. After a successful four-year career in Europe in front of the camera, he embarked into the world of film directing music videos and commercials. With an insatiable appetite for all things visually creative, Cliff learned cinematography, editing, and motion control time lapse.

Paradoxical Dream The Paradoxical Dream short film, visualizes a deep dream of a depressed woman through a space and time between a gap of a single breath, from inhaling tobaco and breathing it out. Director: Mohammad Khaki, Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Khaki is an Iranian-American award-winning director and cinematographer filmmaker. Born in Tehran, Iran, grew up in Santa Barbara, California. His passion in analog photography led him to study Visual Arts in college resulting in many official selections in exhibitions and publications. He obtained his PhD of Entrepreneurship from the University of Lyon, France. Much of his work in the last ten years has focused on Fashion Videography.

The Tailor A gender non-conforming person struggling to assert their identity unexpectedly finds courage in an aging master tailor. Director: Nathalie Therriault, Canada A queer woman in her 50s, Nathalie Therriault (she/her) is a Vancouverbased emerging filmmaker. Nathalie began her artistic pursuits at 8 years old as an actor and trained with numerous acting coaches from Vancouver to Los Angeles. Her passion for craft and the examination of truth made for a natural progression to teaching. She has been teaching acting in Vancouver for over 9 years and has mentored many talented artists. In the last few years, Nathalie enrolled in film studies at Langara College where she discovered her love of writing and storytelling. She hopes her films give hope and a voice to the outcasts who feel unseen, unheard and unloved. She firmly believes it is never too late to take a chance. “The Tailor” marks her debut as a writer/director.

The Woman of the House Lucia receives terrible news after her children have gone to school: a stranger reveals they have taken one of her daughters and she must pay for her life. For a few minutes Lucia will live a real horror. Director: Felipe Espinosa, Spain Felipe Espinosa graduated in Audiovisual Media by the UPF. In 2015 he started working as director with the short film “Carne de Gaviota”. Two years later he directed “Horror Vacui” (2017), produced by Visiona TV with an ICEC financing. In 2018 he directed “Freedom”, which it served as a teaser to seek financing for his first feature film. The short film “La señora de la casa” (2020) is his latest work and begins its distribution at film festivals with YAQ.
