If you were lucky enough to go to overnight summer camp, you probably learned fun songs while sitting around a campfire under a blanket of stars. Just a short walk from the rustic cabin you called home for two weeks, the small, pristine lake where you learned to paddle a canoe sparkled like diamonds under the full moon. After repeated attempts under a sweltering sun, your friends shrieked with delight as your bow and arrow finally found that elusive bull’s eye. And 20 years later, your best friend, whom you met at camp, cherishes the same memories of simple, summer fun. “My religion doesn’t help me,” sobbed a grief-stricken woman. “I’m so unhappy, I don’t know which way to turn or what to do. I’ve always gone to church regularly, and now when I really need help, I can’t get it. Why? That’s what I want to know. Why?” Somewhere along the years, when worry, fear, discouragement, unhappiness have beset us, you and I have asked ourselves that same question, haven’t we? Why, when we have been trying to the best of our ability to live good Christian lives should we be left seemingly destitute of spiritual help at the exact moment of our need? The Bible is filled with promises—“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all the ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy path.”—“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you, not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”—“I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you.” If merely to read these verses brings relief, there must be some value to the promises. Do they fail to meet our need because our concept of religion is at fault? Have we made religion a denominational creed with a white fence around it representing man-made laws, or are we permitting what we call our religion to be a single and direct line of contact between God and ourselves? Is this frenzy of living full lives so overwhelming that we fail to take a half hour each day to think positively, gratefully, affirmatively about the good that is already ours? To think about good is to think about God. To think positively is to be secure in God’s goodness. To think affirmatively is to have faith in that goodness. To think gratefully is to open ourselves up to a love that can overflow to everyone we meet, and love is without question the greatest solvent in the world. People who love are invariably happy and selfless, with an inner strength that carries them protectingly through the deep waters of our human existence. It is impossible, therefore, to think with God, talk with God and then listen to God? Are we not beset with problems because we fail to use that direct line of communication between God and ourselves? Are we not beset with problems because we fail to cultivate God? How to cultivate Him, you ask? Gratitude, positive thoughts and love are simple ways of cultivating God, ways anyone can easily adopt.
