clients and work with a trusted team to provide clients all aspects of the home design process, from the large-scale aspects of construction down to the details of wallpapering and more. Haven Interiors designers strive to meet and exceed client expectations as they are guided by some of the principles that influence the design process. These include utilizing a creative, flexible view; working to achieve an effortless, connective flow, or balance, between rooms; selecting appropriate focal points for rooms; working from larger elements in a room, like furniture, down to selecting the smaller details; and creating an overall design that unifies and connects all of the elements in a space. Donna Sweet, Interior Designer and one of the partners of Haven Interiors, described the process used to help clients personalize and design their living spaces. She and the designers at Haven Interiors share their broad expertise with clients, starting by examining the architecture of a home and even accompanying clients when they select lighting fixtures, flooring, plumbing and more. Sweet and her team can help clients choose furniture and carpeting as well. “We can do it all, from floor on up to finish,” Sweet explained. She and fellow designers help facilitate the “flavor of (the) house so it’s cohesive, so it’s saying what (the client wants) to say. Whatever someone needs—we can do that,” Sweet said. Above all, the designing of a home’s interior reflects a careful and thoughtful dialogue and understanding developed between an interior designer and client. “We really want to respect the person and what they’ve come to be, what pieces are meaningful to them,” Sweet explained. Sweet works to facilitate her clients’ personal and individual expression in their home. “We’re trying to make it the best ‘their house’ we can,” Sweet said. Re-imagining or creating the design of a living space may

feel exhilarating, and the vast varieties of colors, patterns, and selection of furniture needn’t become daunting. Skilled interior designers are familiar with the current trends steering the field and are happy to help clients design and furnish the home of their dreams. Current trends may be liberating as well, allowing use of an array of choices of design details and furnishings. According to Emily Ebben, Director of Design at Warren Barnett Interiors, “It is acceptable and encouraged to mix metals (and) bold pops of color with more earthy, grounding elements, geometric patterns with plush textures, and pattern play of different scales.” Angela Graw, Interior Designer at the Greenfield location of Ken Michaels Furniture, agrees: “Everything’s pretty eclectic now; everything isn’t matchy.” Sweet concurs: “You can really mix things—you just have to know how.” Design of living spaces as an art has evolved through the centuries, with earliest examples often cited as emerging in

Stasney explained:“It’s part of the trend of creating a haven in the home, a safe place where you can curl up and relax.” As in many of the arts through history, the field of interior design shares influences with other forms of creative or artistic expression. According to Ebben, “We see home trends closely mirroring what is currently walking the runway in fashion. Menswear-inspired textiles— black and white mixed with camel, and touches of navy are also pretty hot right now—a classic palette, just with a fresh face. Mod shapes mixed with transitional colors and fabrics can be a playful way to mix shapes and styles as well.” Color choices, or the color palette, used to decorate a given space may also reflect personal preferences of the client or homeowner. Goggio’s work can spot her paintings from a distance. Her signature is the lush flora and fauna combined with female figures. For more than 25 years, images of

women and birds have been represented in Goggio’s works. During the past five years she has been focused on the painted lady. As described by Goggio, “She is my portrayal of Mother Nature; personified.” “I depict her sentiment as a nurturer, a giver and the bounty she provides.” Goggio paints the painted lady in scenes where her en gratis manner is hardly unnoticed, painted poetry, surrounded by the loveliest of life’s offerings; animals, birds, bees, butterflies and dragonflies provide her with the flowers, greenery, berries and buds. Mother Nature mingles simplicity with complexity, where it’s true that these creations depend on each other. Goggio continued, “The woman I paint isn’t a woman per se, but rather she’s a concept representing benevolence to the core.” Simply stated, Kristy paints beauty. For centuries, a beautiful woman, birds,

As a child Goggio was wowed by nature and her love of nature continued throughout her life. It makes sense that nature is the subject of her work. On the topic Goggio said, “The workings of nature are nothing short of profound.” “Whether one considers the work of ‘Mother Nature’ to be spiritual, religious or scientific, the miracle of it inspires me.” Goggio feels it was her destiny to create her Mother Nature painted lady. She looked back to her saved sketch books from college and discovered drawings of birds, women, flowers and dragonflies. They were waiting for her to develop them into outstanding, inspirited paintings. As described by Goggio, “My objective when painting Mother Nature is to conjure sentiment,

GOD’S CORNER by Ger trude M. Puelicher

n

NATURE IS NOT ALWAYS the idyllic state poets would have us

n n

believe. At the moment winter and spring are feuding. Winter doesn’t want to let go; spring wants to come in. Winter is no longer the handsome Norseman creating a scintillating diamondstudded wonderland. This is an Old Man Winter, weary of his own buffeting winds and biting cold, tenaciously hanging on to his power. Spring is a sunny, silly young thing teasing the old man in a calculated attempt to wear him out and get rid of him. Many react irritably to nature’s idiosyncrasies, but not so a friend whom I found seated at her dining room table, surrounded by seed catalogues. She is an outstanding gardener each of whose fingers must be a green thumb. From deliciously tender asparagus through a long list of vegetables to luscious raspberries and strawberries, to flower beds that are the envy as well as joy of all recipients of her beautifully arranged bouquets, she paces her life as wife and mother through the medium of her garden. In late winter she plans it, in spring and summer she spends endless backbreaking hours tending it, in fall she reaps the harvest, cans it and stores it away for winter use. Her philosophy of life is the result of her living and working with growing things, with the invisible life within the seed, the life that has its source in God consciousness. Hers is really a contemplative meditation that results in a rarely ruffled kindliness and serenity. “It’s just that I don’t let myself be burdened with thinking mean things about people,” she says. “When you let what people do or say disturb you, then that makes a load you have to carry. It’s like a burden on your back that gets heavier and heavier. I’m just not going to be burdened with something I can avoid. There’s so much to be thankful for, and when I’m working in my garden, even though I get physically tired, I’m thinking kind thoughts about everybody.” Analyze that philosophy, and you find it is clear detachment from any unpleasant situation or thought. The marvelous effect of such detachment is complete freedom, a freedom available to you and me as we turn from the human picture that is usually distorted, to that inner Self, the life of us as it is of the seed. The Nazarene carpenter recognized the power of that inner Self. “He that is within you is greater than he that is in the world” was the law that governed him. As you and I dwell in the power of the Spirit within us, so do we bring forth, regardless of untoward weather conditions or disturbing personal problems, an impersonal love for all mankind that gives us dominion and sets us free.
