Perc Place owners talk about their business.
How long have you been in business?
For the Nassopoulos family the restaurant business it’s a way of living …it’s a lifestyle! My family came to America from Greece in the middle of the 1980s, to a restaurant in Menomonee Falls. As long as we can remember we were running around the tables, talking with people, and making many new friends.
What do you most Love about your Industry?
Most restaurants are labors of love or passion. We want to share our passion with the world. We also enjoy the creative freedom and independence that come from owning your own company.
People and friendships are given when you are a restaurant owner. Putting a smile on their faces is PRICELESS.
What changes have you seen over the years open?
We have only been in Hartford for a short period of time, just one and a half years. The first change we made was to downsize and customize the large and lengthy menu to the size of our abilities. By making the menu our own we put the costumer first. Do less, and

do it extremely well is the most intelligent approach towards running any business. Our NEW menu is serving breakfast all day–every day–along with brunch and lunch.
All of our dishes are made FRESH to order. The customers can add, change or mix and match ingredients and make it to their preference.
What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?
One common myth is that running a restaurant is an easy way to make money.
Running a successful restaurant takes hard work, dedication, and a lot of financial investment. It’s important to understand that profit margins in the industry are slim, and even the most successful restaurants have to constantly adapt to changes in the market to remain profitable.
Another common myth is that the food is the most important part of a restaurant.
For most people restaurant is an outlet to get out their house, meet with family and friends and socialize. We have turned our restaurant into a place where customers can have fun, relax and de-stress.
What are you most grateful for?
Successful restaurant owners are backed with a great team of employees, very supportive customers, suppliers and technical support. True leaders are more than just proficient on the job. They’re passionate about the operation, the whole process that makes this crazy business worthwhile and rewarding. This passion shows and, better yet, it’s contagious. It motivates the entire team, attracts fresh talent and encourages everyone to perform even better.
What would you like people to know about your business?
Perc Place isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a Restaurant AND a Coffee Shop. Two businesses under the same roof, which both serve a similar purpose.
The coffee shop has a full menu with specialty coffees, teas and refreshing drinks, whether you walk in and out the door, or take a seat and enjoy your hot or cold-icy drink.
There is also a full bar creating a variety of cocktails to pair with your food…from a Watermelon Mint Mojito or Irish coffee to a Mimosa and a Bloody Mary. Cheers To That!
The benefits of having a small coffee shop in the community are endless. They provide jobs, support other local businesses and create a more diverse local economy. Local coffee shops like our Perc Cafe, serve as gathering places, bringing people together in a more organic way, over a shared love of coffee and good food.
Our Cafe serves as a meeting place with friends, catch up with family, or simply unwind and relax. There is something really inviting about going somewhere, where you are greeted warmly by name. Your coffee is being made without having said a word, and the conversation is easy.

What is the biggest compliment customers give you?
Our biggest compliment is when we see our customers regularly entering our doors bringing their families and their friends. When they refer Perc Place to whoever asks for a good spot to eat and have a drink.
We are very fortunate to have families feeling that Perc Place is their home away from home. For example when I asked my Perc Place friends and customers to tell me a few of the reasons they love to come here they gave me in writing the following:
“What we like about Perc Place?
“We choose Perc Place because it is like eating with friends. The staff are amazing and work very well together, it’s like family. We feel at home as soon as we walk in the door, the staff takes the time to get to know everyone and treat them like old friends. The food at Perc Place is elevated Breakfast and Lunch cuisine, they take simple meals and make it elegant. With a name like Perc Place you know the coffee better be phenomenal, and it is truly made with love. It is a comfortable, casual, high end place all rolled into one. You can scoot in for coffee, get out your laptop and work, have brunch with family and friends or even have them host your wedding reception or bridal shower. This is a one of a kind find!”
From Sarah and Tom Heideman “
What message would you most like to share with people?
We want them to know that Perc Place is their home. We care about them and we worry when regulars don’t show up on their usual day. To us this isn’t just a business! It’s a labor of LOVE in every aspect! The reward is when customers see and feel that! They see us work every position in the restaurant, day after day, from start to close. We want them to feel very important, because they are!

Sheeping Beauty
After teaching myself to spin on a wheel while working at Old World Wisconsin I decided to start my own business. I needed a job but I wanted to be home with my children more. When my first son was born, (my fourth) a dear friend of mine gave me my first baby black lamb. My business began.
My first shop was in our antique log home in Richfield where I turned the summer kitchen into a retail store/school. From dye workshops with the local guilds to tea parties with the Milwaukee Spindle and Dyepot. We had great times at our farm. One year a ranch owner from Australia came and demonstrated sheep shearing and shared a video of his colored flock. We had quite a crowd that day. From this point my business really started to grow as I continued to demonstrate at shows and fairs to drum up students for classes.
I think the worst thing that has happened to small businesses in this country is the internet and the revealing of wholesale prices to customers. I saw this when my shop was in Cedarburg. Companies were starting to post to our customers their prices and accepting orders online. They were also selling to our customers in bulk for lower prices. It’s hard to compete with that when you have

rent, utilities, advertising etc. as a store. We had teachers coming all the way from Russia to teach workshops and they expected a lot as well. I only had self contracting teachers working for me and I handled the rest.
The “hands on” with this art form is so fulfilling from raising a lamb, spinning their fiber, dying the yarn, knitting a sweater and sharing your experience with like minds. My first experience was not like this and was kept quite secret. I swore I would share this beautiful legacy of our past with interested parties and family.
I always find it funny when people see me spinning but say “I don’t have the patience or time”. I have five children and that takes patience. lol. This is just the greatest form of relaxation and therapy for any time in your life. My favorite verse in the Bible is Proverbs 31 on the Virtuous Woman that guided my life. I even shared a business with that name. I may have failed in a lot of ways but this verse has always been my goal. The Lord has always been there for me.
I think as a teacher you should be very informed about what you are teaching along with the experience in doing it. I always try to keep in mind how it felt to be a beginner. With over 40 years and fourteen different stores I think I qualify. There have been lots of compliments on my work but you can’t live on that one. The Amish always leave a mistake on their quilts just to keep them humble. My mother was a great influence along with my grandmother with both being Mennonite they taught me how to do handwork and work hard. My father taught me to never think you are better than anyone else.
I am so thankful for blessed years in my business that kept me home when I needed to be, a taste of success on TV and many newspapers, wonderful students along with customers. My memories and experiences will be in a future book if I live that long. “Leave and Cleave, Spin and Weave”. This business has been my life. ~

StoneSuede Boutique +
Stone + Suede Boutiques’s owner, Lauren Tillema, talks about her Waupun business.
How long have you been in business?
A little over 2 years. We opened in May 2022. How did you get started?
We were nurses that also had a love for clothing, beauty, and design. That naturally flowed into looking for locations we could renovate and then a LOT of research and learning the retail business! We attend markets for buying all over the United States, take non-stop classes, & learn every day we are open. Our nursing background makes taking care of others easy!
What changes have you seen over the years open?
We’ve seen prices increasing dramatically in some cases for us (both from vendors and shipping costs) which unfortunately leads to higher prices for consumers. We’ve also seen a huge surge in the Temu/Shein advertising all over social media. These businesses illegally use boutique images and create cheaply made copies of products and have zero support for the American economy. This has made the boutique industry more
challenging in some ways as consumers search for lower prices and it can be tempting to fall for these products. What you find in boutiques across the country not only is almost always not only a superior product, but you also get to experience the hands-on shopping experience, the customer service, and you are supporting the American economy both locally and throughout the country.
What do you most Love about your Industry?
The community it builds! And let’s be honest… the clothes. There is nothing more exciting than getting to shop for the amazing women we serve and being the one to bring in the trends and cool finds for them. There is something magical about knowing your clothing comes handpicked at a market where you know who is buying it and that they have a friendship with the rep from that brand. It truly touches so many hands that care before it comes home with you. (We actually name some of our styles after the customer it reminds us of and it almost always gets brought to the checkout by them. The best!). We get to build each other up and create a sense empowerment.
What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?
That it is easy. That all we do is shop. That we make a lot of profit. That we are able to compete with Amazon & the “big box” store prices. That brands make it easy to be size inclusive (spoiler-they don’t!).
What message would you most like to share with people?
We do this to foster a community of women. We always think of our customers first and it is an absolute joy to serve them. We believe that your sense of purpose, confidence, and personality is reflected in how you present yourself and how you dress and we are here to foster that! We are here to educate, lift up others, and create a place of belonging long before just selling clothes. The clothes and accessories are the icing on top.
What would you like people to know about your business?
We are here for the “middle-aged Mom” but also the other ends of the spectrum! We have customers as young as teenagers (or younger if you count the fun accessories) all the way up to 90+. We have a very tailored & classic style that spans not only age ranges but styles as well. We do bring in fashion trends but overall want to bring you quality pieces and elevated basics you reach for over and over again. From athleisure to glam we have a little bit of it all, and we love to educate you on how to wear it and style customers! We also offer size ranges from XS3X in styles if available to us.
What is the biggest compliment customers give you?
You made me the best version of myself. I feel confident. I can easily put together outfits that say “me”.
What are you most proud of?
-This question is hard. Instead of proud, we would say thankful. We are thankful to be here

in this community and for all that it has grown in the last few years. We are thankful for the women we have served and continue to get to serve. We are thankful to have been a part of growing a Downtown by investing in it, hosting events, networking, and recruiting other businesses. We are thankful for the growth our business has experienced. We are thankful we could renovate an old building, bring it to life, and do what we were made to do! Most of all, we are thankful the Lord has blessed us with a passion, a vision, and the support of family, friends, and customers (that have become family and friends) to make it possible!
How many employees/Family work with you?
The 2 of us as co-owners; 1 full time employee, seasonal help of 2-3. Our family is invaluable during Holiday times, cleaning, etc.; 2 husbands that are full time “project employees” and landlords.
What are you most grateful for?
That we get to do this with our sister and best friend every single day! The customers and fellow business owners we have that have truly become amazing friends we never would have met. The unwavering support of our husbands and family members that have never doubted we could do it (even when we do). The talent God has given us for fashion and people (if only he could have given us the talent of getting on camera without fear!).
Who/what can you credit your success?
-100% this is the Lord. NEVER could we dream, execute, or take this incredible risk without him (stop in sometime and we’ll tell you our story). We also can’t leave out husbands, family, and friends that cheered us on and the amazing Kathy Schlieve (City Administrator & Economic Development Director of Waupun), the City of Waupun, and numerous others. A small business owner is the product of support and we have had so much of it. Success is an interesting word because it means something different to everyone. No matter what happens, this adventure has certainly been a success! ~
