ChelseaClocks

The NAUTICAL COLLECTION Born from a 115-year heritage of crafting fine maritime timepieces, Chelsea Clock nautical clocks offer extraordinary precision and durability. Now at Hawkins Clock Center in downtown West Allis. Since 1897, the Chelsea Clock Company has been making the finest ships’ clocks here in the USA. A Chelsea Ship’s Bell clock is an exquisite time machine–each one an individual work of art–made by an elite group of master clockmakers with the same relentless precision and craft for more than 100 years. Since the turn of the 19th century, Chelsea clocks have been deeply rooted in a tradition of keeping time at sea. Their nautical clocks have sailed the seas with the US military and graced the ocean’s most expensive yachts. THE SHIP’S BELL CLOCK Regarded as Chelsea’s signature timepiece, the Ship’s Bell is renowned by mariners and collectors worldwide. Each clock is designed to last for generations. For more than a century, the clocks have been assembled by hand in their original factory just outside of Boston. This distinctive, handcrafted timepiece signals the passing of time with gentle rich-sounding chimes–eight bells at 4, 8 and 12 o’clock–to mark the end of a mariner’s four-hour watch. One bell marks the first half hour after the watch begins, plus one additional bell is added with each subsequent half hour. Continued on page 41

We are pleased to continue our support and participation in this year’s Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse, supporting its mission to raise funds for research to combat both breast and prostate cancer. This year Cathy William’s and Michael Carter’s design focused on creative uses of color and texture. Their concept was to use colors of a traditional lake home in a more dynamic way. Gold accents were used to create juxtaposition against deep navy walls and furniture, while the off whites were used to ground and calm the space. Using soft linen like textures throughout the space, this room’s design works equally well lakeside or in an urban environment.

Throw Down on the Grill This Summer Tired of the same old go-to grilling recipes? Shake up your backyard barbecue with fresh pork this summer. From tender ribs to mouth-watering tenderloins and juicy chops, the options are endless. Take your cookout to the next level with these grilling tips and recipes from award-winning celebrity pit masters Tuffy Stone and Moe Cason: n Use fresh, high-quality cuts of meat, like Smithfield Fresh Pork, which is available in a variety of cuts and seasonings. n Allow cooked meats to rest 3-5 minutes before serving to lock in natural juices. n Check for proper doneness with a meat thermometer. Remember meats will continue cooking after they’re removed from the grill.

These and other great grilling recipes are available at SmithfieldThrowdown.com. Behind its classic hand-silvered dial, 364 precision brass parts, many plated with gold, and 11 jewel movements–all of which are made in Chelsea, Massachusetts–ensure accuracy in time and enduring quality for years to come. Since the first patented Ship’s Bell left their factory in 1900, it has been held as the standard by which all other Chelsea clocks are measured. The Ship’s Bell clock features a lacquered, solid forged brass case, and hinged bezel, as shown on or ad on page 14, on a traditional mahogany base. THE MARINER Considered one of the finest inspired clocks made in this country, the Mariner is a true masterpiece of American clock making. An exact reproduction of an original yacht wheel, the Mariner was first patented and produced by Chelsea Clock Company in 1911. Featuring their renowned chiming Ship’s Bell mechanism, this exquisite timepiece has an 11 jewel movement and 364 brass and gold-plated precision parts. Its forged solid brass bezel opens with the original “shield” hinge and latch design. The clock’s dial is painstakingly crafted of deeply etched brass that is hand-silvered, enameled and lacquered. The wood case and back are crafted of solid mahogany, while the wheel ring and base are finished using Chelsea’s own lustrous hand-rubbed copper bronze process and lacquered to prevent tarnish. 6" SHIP’S BELL BAROMETER IN NICKEL ON A TRADITIONAL BASE The classic Ship’s Bell Barometer, designed as a companion piece to the Ship’s Bell Clock, features a double bellows holosteric movement that mechanically measures changes in atmospheric pressure to foretell changing weather. Readings of “Stormy,” “Rain,” “Change,” “Fair,” or “Very Dry,” are displayed on the piece’s rich handsilvered dial. The 4" and 6" dial editions also include a thermometer tube that provides accurate temperature readings. The Ship’s Bell Barometer on a traditional base features a lacquered solid forged brass with nickel finish, screw bezel and hand-crafted solid mahogany base. Barometer movements are calibrated to sea level and can be adjusted for altitudes up to 5,000-ft. above sea level, upon request.
