Farm Girl

Art & Antiques

Farm Girl store owner Lisa Goldner talks about her store How long have you been in business? Anniversary month? We have been in business for 11 years. We opened December 4. How did you get started? What inspired you to Open? I have loved antiques since I was a kid. My parents loved them too and so our house was filled with them. I decorated my home with them and then stared doing shows and opened a booth with my friend Nancy Wade. We had lots of fun collecting, selling, and displaying our booth area together. We often talked about having a shop and what it would look like etc. So 12 years ago as many of you know times were tough and they were for me as well. My oldest son was starting college and I need some extra money so I started working on the weekends on the space in the building we are in now with the help of our friend Shannon. Well the space took a year to come together! So I started Farm Girl with a bunch of antiques my friends and I had along with some handmade items. I felt I had nothing to loose times were already pretty bad when we began in 2008-2009! Lol. What changes have you seen over the years open? Antiques are very trendy what’s popular one year is not the next. WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE

WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE Summer 2020

Farm Girl Art & Antiques What do you most Love about your Industry? What I love most about this industry is the whole idea for recycling the items we have not just tossing them away. Giving new life to really well made furniture and saving trees by doing so! Learning about the history and design of different years and what was going on in history at the time to produce these vintage everyday items we can decorate our homes with and still use today because they were made so well. What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? I think one of the most things I come across is just because its old it should be worth a lot of money. What is vintage and in trend is what sells and in antiques that changes all the time so just buy what you like. What message would you most like to share with people? Thank you for coming to our store and keeping us in business, it still amazes me when people walk through the door I’m so grateful and thanks for shopping local. What would you like people to know about your business? We all work very hard to, find, fix, clean or make something for your home or a gift you can be proud of. What is the biggest compliment customers give you? The biggest compliment we are given is they love the displays, and the space the store is in they love the cool, old building. What are you most proud of? My Sons They are awesome! How many employees/Family work with you? My vendors work with me and sometimes my sons help out What are you most grateful for? I’m most grateful for the customers who keep coming back…Thank you! What is the primary focus of your business? The primary focus is to give my shoppers an experience, a place to escape for little while and to bring something into there home with a story of a great day they had at Farm Girl! To who or what can you credit your success? My husband and my friends/vendors it really has been a great team effort! n

We Love

Antiques Creating modern country style with antiques and flea market finds.

Two folk-art painted wood butlers for your enjoyment. The first is Jiggs, a character from the “Bringing up Father” comic strip. The second is your typically attired butler holding a metal ashtray. These Butlers would have sat next to your favorite chair so you didn’t have to get up during your favorite TV or radio program. Both are believed to be circa 1930s. May be viewed at Riverview Antiques, 2045 West St. Paul Ave. in the Historic Menomonee River Valley in Milwaukee. Call 414-278-9999 or check www. RiverViewAntiqueMarket.com for more information.

Shown are 2 different pieces of Jewelry in their original boxes from the early 1900s. One being Francis D. Brancroft Jewelers and the other Estberg & Sons Jewelers. Both had their businesses in Waukesha, WI, the same city where Metropolitan Antiques is located! 259 West Main Street, in historic downtown Waukesha, WI. Call 262-352-8888 to sell your quality antiques or 262-547-5000 for additional information.

This solid handcrafted gold cast bonze statue shown is a very unique and rare! It is Gothic style with very long legs and wings and is estimated to be from the 1940s. The lamp shade is original to this piece as well, with a carmel colored swirl through the glass. The Lamp has been re-wired, and is in excellent working condition. Elkhorn Antique Flea Market

An Elkhorn Promoter talks about the market. How long have you been in business? How many years the Flea Market has taken place in Elkhorn? 2020 is the 39th year. How did you get started? What inspired you to Open? Nona is an antique collector herself. She attended shows in the 1980s and saw an opportunity to start one in Elkhorn, that didn’t have anything like it. What changes have you seen over the years open? There have been many trends that come and go. Its getting harder and harder to find certain antiques and collectible items so shoppers need to keep their eyes open. What do you most Love about your Industry? The culture of the vendors that we welcome back each year. It’s a circuit of close knit people that share a common interest and have become friends over the years. What are some of the common myths you come across in your business? A lot of people think that flea markets are just full of junk. We have strict criteria for vendor entry so there are great treasures to be found. Since we stress antiques only, you won’t find mass produced, commercial items. What message would you most like to share with people? I would tell people to take their time and look in as many booths as you can, WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE

Elkhorn Antique Flea Market sometimes the best treasures are hidden where you wouldn’t expect it. What would you like people to know about your business? Our flea market is an “Antique Flea Market”. We specialize in original, as intended, merchandise from 1970s and earlier. You will find very little upcycled, repurposed, hand crafted items at our show. What is the biggest compliment customers give you?

We often hear how great and diverse the merchandise is at our show, a true vintage show. We also love hearing how nice and helpful our staff is. What are you most proud of? The longevity of the show is a true testament to the hard work that has gone into it. When it started, we had just a handful of dealers. We’ve gone from 50 to over 500. How many employees/Family work with you? We have a whole mix of great people. It takes about 25 of us to do a show. Some of

them have worked at the show for decades. What are you most grateful for? I’m most grateful for the dedication of the vendors. They promote the show everywhere they go. They believe it’s the best of its kind in the Midwest and that’s what keeps the customers coming back each year after year. Who/what can you credit your success? Success of the show has come from a lot of hard work by so many wonderful people, dedicated to sharing their love and passion for antiques. n

Cookout Cravings The first thought that comes to mind when picturing grilling in the summer sun might be a perfectly cooked steak or a juicy burger, but no backyard barbecue is complete without the all-important sides and beverages that complete the meal. Whether you’re pairing a main protein with separate side dishes or going all-inone by combining tender chicken with veggies on skewers, the opportunities are endless for a crave-worthy cookout. Find more summer grilling recipes at www.Culinary.net.

Appease summer appetites with grilled fare

Prepare Your Cut Taste preferences (and prices) may differ among sirloins, ribeyes, T-bones and more, but the way you prepare steaks likely won’t change much from cut to cut. You’ll want to trim the thickness down to 1/2-1 inch for proper cooking, and setting the meat out ahead of time allows it to warm to room temperature before hitting the grill.

Add Some Salt Feel free to add any spices you prefer, but remember a good steak typically doesn’t require fancy seasoning–a pinch of salt works just fine. Add your salt anywhere between 30 minutes to a few hours before grilling time to help retain moisture and improve flavor. Aim for High Heat A two-zone fire is usually the way to

5 Steps for Sizzling Steak A sizzling steak is a surefire sound of summer, and the flavors achieved from one that’s perfectly grilled are hard to match. Before you fire up your grill, consider these five basics for cooking a chefworthy steak: WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE

Summer2020

Cookout Cravings go–one side of the grill should be hot (using direct heat) with the other side not quite as warm (indirect heat). This allows you to create a sear over direct heat before finishing cooking through–without burning– over indirect heat. Sear and Slide Cooking your steak over direct heat 1-2 minutes on each side is normally about right for creating a proper sear. At this point, depending on the thickness of your steak, you’ll want to check for doneness. If it’s not quite to the temperature you’re looking to achieve, simply slide it over to the indirect heat for a finishing touch. Keep in mind these general guidelines for doneness: 120-125 F is rare, 130-135 F is medium-rare,

140-145 F is medium, 150-155 F is mediumwell and 160-175 F is well done. Let Rest Finally, as hungry as you may be at this point, resting steaks is an important last step before diving in. Giving your steaks 5-10 minutes (foil or no foil) allows flavors to redistribute and moisture to be retained in the meat. Less Prep, More Summer with a Skewered Solution Make summer grilling easy and delicious by cooking your side dish and main dish together so you can spend more time outdoors and less time meal planning. These Grilled Greek Kebabs pair cubed chicken thighs with little potatoes on skewers, making for a tasty classic cookout combo.

With no washing or peeling required, Creamer potatoes from The Little Potato Company require little prep, which make this recipe a breeze, plus they cook quickly on the grill. Just marinate your chicken and potatoes with this dressing and prepare for a taste bud-tingling backyard barbecue. Visit www.littlepotatoes.com/summertime for more summer grilling recipes. Grilled Greek Kebabs Dressing/Marinade: 3/4 cup olive oil 2 lemons, zest and juice only 1 teaspoon dried oregano 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 1 teaspoon sugar salt, to taste; pepper, to taste Continued on page 28
