Message from the NOC The 78th International Session of the European Youth Parliament will be focusing on democracy, civilization and their roots. The session will take place in beautiful Izmir, with its ancient name Smyrna, which owes its cultural mosaic to its 8500 year-old history (evolved through Roman, Hellenistic and Anatolian cultures) and gifted geographical destination, center of the Aegean coast with two ancient sites. It has been the intersection point of various civilizations that have dominated the human history for ages, hence the birthplace of many cultures and religions that govern our current ideas of civilization, modernity, freedom and democracy. Homer’s birthplace and muse, Izmir represents Turkey in terms of harmonisation of the orient and the occident, both geographically and culturally. As the organising team, we would like to put emphasis on cultural accumulation and history with regard to their roles in the rapid development of human history considering the fact that Izmir has been a setting for mythological and cultural stories. Thus we will be organising cultural trips and discussion sessions. Our session vision can be best described as an “odyssey of wisdom, tolerance and hospitality” for these three concepts are the very roots of democracy, civilization and social order. Delegates will voice their opinions to debate economic, cultural, political and environmental issues of the European Union whilst constantly being engaged in stimulating discussion sessions, forum events and cultural excursions, which will make the session both a social adventure and an academic experience. We, as the organising team, would like to merge the European idea of integration with famous Turkish hospitality and implement the “Respect for the Other” principle widely throughout the session. We hope that it would be beneficial in terms of expanding the pan-European ideal to a bigger community within a non-EU country for ten unforgettable days. Furthermore, all participants of the session will be highly encouraged for maximum intercultural communication and social interaction as a session element. We expect that our Session President will be interested in Turkey’s policies; have sufficient knowledge about EU’s relations with its neighbouring countries and Middle East with a focus on Turkey, for some of the committee topics would be covering these matters. Beyond high academic standard, our further expectations, in light of our session vision, are regarding the ability and willingness to bring people together in a strong and united environment and cultural understanding. We hope that our Session President will meet the goal of positively and objectively supporting our organisation team whilst enjoying, like us, an intellectual odyssey. .
