Call for applications JOURNALISTS, EDITORIAL ASSISTANTS 73rd International Session, Zurich 2013 The 73rd International Session of the EYP will be held in Zurich, Switzerland from the 19th to the 28th of July 2013, under the motto “Global Europe – Working towards sustainable economies”.

We are now looking for 15 journalists and 2 editorial assistants. There will be one editorial assistant for videos and one for support with the written media products. Members of the Media Team will be required to arrive in Zurich one or two days prior to the start of the session in order to prepare for the session. Departures are on Sunday 28th July. Criteria According to the policies of international EYP, the Selection Panel is looking for individuals with the following qualities: • relevant EYP experience, • motivation and commitment to further the session media team’s objectives, • good writing skills, • creativity in all aspects of the pressroom, • excellent knowledge of the English language (French desirable) • ability to work as a member of a team. The overall team will also present a cohesive and suitable balance of nationality, gender and levels of experience. Applicants should be aware that failure to be selected is not a reflection on their talent or ability. The selection panel will consider first the individuals who have applied for the position. The Panel will follow guidelines given by the GB. It will consist of the Past Session Editor (Sophie Debrunner Hall), the Session Editors (Franziska Maier and Luca Olumets) and a member of the Governing Body (Robert Torveleinen).

How to Apply? If you are available and interested in attending, you should follow these steps to apply: 1. Log on to the EYP Alumni Portal at (if you do not have access or encounter any other problems, please get in touch with support@eyp.org); 2. Update your profile on the Portal; 3. Sign up for the 73rd International Session as either journalist or editorial assistant and fill in the “additional fields” in the application form. If you would like to apply for multiple positions, please send one of your applications to hr@eyp.org. 4. If you already registered for Zurich for another role, you will have to send your application to hr@eyp.org by email. In this case, please include in your offline application your contact information, nationality and whether you comit to respecting the relevant policies if selected. 5. Once you have submitted your application via the platform, please send your updated session history using the attached template to hr@eyp.org. Please note that this is a prerequisite for your application to be considered. 6. The deadline for submitting your application via the platform and sending in your complete session history is Monday, 10th June at 12.00 (noon) CET. 7. All officials are also asked to make sure they are aware of the relevant policies of the EYP as listed in the official EYP Policy Compilation at http://alumni.eypej.org/eyp-materials. The selection process for Zurich will be unique as the GB has decided to run a trial on external recommendations. Therefore, if you do not possess a recommendation to be a journalist written by a EYPer and stored in the database, you may seek one from someone working in an academic occupation – a teacher, tutor, professor etc. The template for the recommendation letter is attached to the call. Please note that the recommendation needs to be submitted by the author of it and not the applicant, by emailing it to hr@ eyp.org before the deadline. Application questions All applicants: 1. What is your motivation to be part of Zurich 2013 Media Team? (max. 350 words) 2. Write a letter of recommendation for your participation in the Zurich 2013 Media Team. Please include relevant experience, skills and interests you would bring to the session. (max 250 words) Example letter: http://businessmajors.about.com/od/samplerecommendations/a/RecSample4.htm 3. Please write an article of no more than 450 words on one of the following topics: i. Have the changes introduced by the Lisbon Treaty been sufficient to increase the democratic quality of the EU? ii. Could the current economic crisis be described as a new period of Eurosclerosis? iii. Politicians and the press have always been locked in a love/hate relationship. What would be the ideal role of media in politics? iv. Does the common EU citizenship contribute to a shared European identity? 4. Please comment on one of the following quotations (max. 150 words): i. “Journalist: a person without any ideas but with an ability to express them; a writer whose skill is improved by a deadline: the more time he has, the worse he writes.“ (Karl Kraus, Austrian journalist, critic and playwright ) ii. “Every journalist has a novel in him, which is an excellent place for it.“ (Russell Lynes, American writer, managing editor of Harper’s Magazine) iii. “Journalism without a moral position is impossible. Every journalist is a moralist. It’s absolutely unavoidable.” (Marguerite Duras, French writer and film director) For those applying as editorial assistants: i. For video editors: Please outline your vision and ideas for a high quality video coverage, the interaction with the Media Team and the delegates, and specify your technical skills. If possible, please provide us with material from your previous work. ii. For written products of the media team (newspapers and social media etc): How do you imagine the co-operation within the editorial team before, during and after the session?

The deadline for submitting your application is Monday, 10th June at 12.00 CET. All applicants will be informed individually about the outcome of the selection process.
