Message from the NOC The 76th International Session of the European Youth Parliament will be held in the Mediterranean city of Barcelona. For the first time in our National Committee’s history, EYP Spain will have the honour to host an International Session of the EYP. The theme of the session will be ‘Walking Towards a Common European Spirit’. This will have a great influence in both the content of the topics to be debated and the rest of activities of the session. With the current European Union (EU) in crisis, there is an increasingly negative public discourse towards the European project. The latest Eurobarometer (EB) results show that from 2006 to 2013 the percentage of population who sees the EU as a ‘total positive’ image has declined from 50% to 31% while the amount of people who evaluate it as a ‘total negative’ image has raised from 15% to 28%. The raise of Eurosceptic parties entering national parliaments in Europe, a certain democratic deficit in the EU institutions and a lack of common European public sphere for discussion of societal issues between citizens and policy-makers are some of the problems that our community has been facing for the past years in order to make citizens feel close to the European Union. However, it is easy to claim that European unity should be based on common values and ideals, such as peace, human rights or democracy. In this sense, it seems that a common European identity appears as the solution that can bind us all together both through good and bad times. In line with this, we believe that the multicultural city of Barcelona possesses a strong bond with the construction of a common European spirit. The National Organising Committee would like to welcome an experienced candidate, who will be able to find the right balance between the academic and social aspects of Barcelona 2014. We hope for a President who knows well and/or has closely followed the growth of the Spanish National Committee, someone willing to help the NOC provide the Session with the warmth, yet professionalism that characterises Spanish sessions. Best of luck to all the applicants!
