The city of Rio de Janeiro founded March 1, 1565 Samba, carnival, Maracanã Stadium, Copacabana and girls from Ipanema – no wonder Rio de Janiero has been nicknamed the Cidade Maravilhosa or “Marvelous City.” The former Brazilian capital, reputedly the most visited city in the southern hemisphere, is gearing up for two of the greatest shows on earth over the next three years – World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 2016.
Wilt Chamberlain scores 100 points in a single NBA game March 2, 1962 Wilton Norman Chamberlain set the basketball world on fire when he racked up an unprecedented (and still unmatched 100 points in a 169-147 win for the Philadelphia Warriors over the New York Knicks. Chamberlain holds numerous NBA all-time records in scoring and rebounding and is the only NBA player in history to average more than 40 and 50 points in one season. Move over, Kobe!
Rodney King beating caught on tape March 3, 1991 Rodney King, a former California construction worker paroled for robbery, was involved in a high-speed chase that ended very badly when he was caught and beaten by five furious police officers. Start the month off right! It’s a brand new month and while no one really celebrates March, there’s no reason you can’t set some resolutions for the month. 1. Practise gratitude. Being grateful for the things you have around you is one way to make the best of this month. Remember, so many others have nothing. 2. “Do the thing you think you cannot do.” Take Eleanor Roosevelt’s advice: push past your comfort zone and do something that really challenges you. 3. Surround yourself with those better than you. If you want to improve your life, spend time in the company of those you admire and want to emulate. However, in all this, don’t forget to stay true to who you are. Live your best weekend, every weekend!
