Address From the Chairman

The Hawk ezine

It is a blessing and privilege to be able to celebrate such a significant milestone in our Company’s history. It hardly seems like it was that long ago, but twenty-five years have indeed passed since our humble beginnings in February 1988. In those days, electronic security, with 24 hour monitoring and armed response, was just being introduced on the security scene in Jamaica. It was September 1987 when a decision was taken by my brother Mark and I to invest in what we believed would become an emerging market. In February 1988 after months of preparation we were able to secure a location for our office and Hawkeye began operations.

Hawkeye for over 10 years and 35 of these persons for over 15 years, is not only a testimony to their dedication and commitment to the Company but also to the family environment we have been able to create. I must pay special tribute in acknowledging the outstanding loyalty and dedication of three men who started with me and have remained with me for 25 years of unwavering service, Mr. Owen Gibson, Mr. Clifton Johnson and Mr. Linton Whyte.

One of our first missions was to identify the right personnel to be a part of the company and we were very fortunate to have found several individuals whose effort, dedication and commitment are a big part of why we are celebrating this milestone.

To all our customers I extend a sincere “Thank You” for entrusting the security of your families, homes, businesses and properties to us. I say a special thanks to those twenty customers who have been with us from the beginning. Your contribution goes way beyond the monetary; by serving you, learning to meet your needs, and applying lessons from your feedback we have become a more adaptable and more efficient company.

Even as we reflect on the achievements of the past twentyfive years, we conclude that success cannot be defined merely by length of tenure, or even by the health of a Company’s balance sheet. While these are important, they form only a part of the picture. The vision and values on which the Company was formed are founded on honesty, integrity, a commitment to customer satisfaction, a caring attitude towards our staff and customers, and being engaged in the communities in which we are involved. It is our commitment to our mission and vision that has kept Hawkeye Electronic Security at the forefront of a very competitive industry, in an increasingly challenging economic environment. Of course, such a milestone is an occasion for gratitude and recognition of staff and I wholeheartedly salute all our staff, past and present. This truly is your celebration, regardless of your tenure with us. The fact that over 70 members of staff have been with

To our suppliers, we gratefully acknowledge your role in helping us to offer our customers increased peace of mind through the latest technology and highest quality products available. Our goal for the future is to continue to be the leading electronic security provider. Finally and most importantly, I give thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ for His guidance, and direction that He has graciously provided through the years, enabling us to accomplish what we have.

Hawkeye Introduces

Drone Surveillance Technology

The Hawk ezine

Hawkeye and Ranger have a sibling relationship and like most siblings they look out for each other’s best interests. Zomian Thompson, the Fleet and Equipment Officer at Ranger, has been flying drones for more than a year and was inspired to create one specifically for Hawkeye and so the HK 550 Hawkdrone was created. GPS is another useful feature of the device, it allows the drone to return to the operator in the event of signal loss or if the operator decides to fly the drone manually. The features of the HK 550 Hawk-drone include an on board camera that provides aerial surveillance and is operated via the controller. The camera affixed is a GoPro full HD, enabling 1080p and can produce 120 frames per second, a monitor allows the operator to get a first person view of what the camera is picking up. The drone also has the ability to travel distances up to 60km depending on the set up. The telemetric features on the device allow for data (such as battery life, speed and altitude) to be transferred wirelessly from the device to the operator. These features make this an effective tool for numerous kinds of operations. Assessing the extent of damage done to a property after a natural disaster is one potential avenue to explore. Let the drone do the work for you by provising a video recording of the damage. Search and rescue operations can be made safer by sending the drone into hazardous situations and then making decisions based on factual information. The features of the drone and the benefits that come along it ensure a safer future for security response.

25 years of service Twenty-five years ago when Hawkeye was founded, there were some members who became a part of the team, twenty-five years later their invaluable contributions have ensured that they are still a part of Hawkeye’s family.

Owen Gibson has been working to protect Jamaica for most of his life. At age 17 he joined the army and after spending 22 years there he went on to become a founding part of Hawkeye. Protecting is in Gibson’s DNA, after retiring from the JDF he was looking for something similar and having gone to Ranger he was told that a sister company, Hawkeye, would be starting soon and would be somewhat paramilitary and so similar to JDF. After working with Ranger for one year until Hawkeye was founded, he then started with Hawkeye as a supervisor. In those early days the company was still establishing their name and so his initial duties included distributing flyers to potential clients to make them aware of the services offered. As a supervisor Gibson was responsible for rostering and visiting locations to see that everything was being done according to the company’s standard.

Gibson recounts one occasion when his team was doing a cash in transit transaction at a bank that used to be located in Three Miles. Upon arrival he noticed a suspicious looking fellow nearby. “I spoke to my men and said that you’ve got to be very alert and watch this person.” We did our transaction and departed without an incident. The following day the team was greeted with resounding applause and it was then that they learnt that the man had been a criminal with a gun, he robbed and held up a courier that came after the Hawkeye team. For Gibson, working with Hawkeye has been both challenging and rewarding. “It has been very challenging in that you’re faced with so much, it’s a different approach from a military approach. It is really a service operation at Hawkeye, but your military experience will help you a lot in how you maneuver in the streets, so I combine both the services, from a civilian point of view as a service organisation and then the military experience. I’ve found it [Hawkeye] very rewarding in that people recognize [your efforts] immediately”.

Owen Gibson “I’ve found it [Hawkeye] very rewarding in that people recognize [your efforts] immediately.”

“From the moment I been here I like the style and how we do our duty, how we carry out our duties and how we always respond at our best to protect our clients.”

Clifton Johnson

After twenty-five years with Hawkeye, Clifton Johnson doesn’t regret a single moment of it. Johnson made the move from Ranger to Hawkeye and from he has been with the Company he appreciates the way they carry out their operations. Johnson’s feelings towards the company and his job are obvious, with nothing but good to say about the company, he considers it his second home. As a Senior Supervisor with the company Johnson is responsible for overseeing dispatches, and ensuring that equipment (such as firearms and ammunition, flashlights, radios, vehicles) is distributed and that the team is appropriately equipped.

during 2012. He feels that the course helped and empowere him. It has helped him to interact better with clients and colleagues. One of his most interesting memories is from Hurricane Gilbert, shortly after Hawkeye was founded, and the team had to patrol Mall plaza throughout the hurricane to ensure that no looting took place and that everything was okay. For the newer staff and anyone looking to work at Hawkeye, Johnson says, “Hawkeye is like a college and I would advise them that this company is one of the most entrusted companies. when you come here you can feel it that you’re in a good company. The company always protects you.”

Johnson’s gratitude towards the company results from more than Hawkeye being great employers, they also sent him back to school. Johnson did a course at Utech

”Sometimes when you get a call, you don’t know what you’re going into and you go there and whatever situation is, you have to deal with and have a successful outcome.”

Linton White

A craving to learn about the electronic side of the security industry was what brought Linton White to Hawkeye. A brand new company at the time, but one that promised to become the future of security in Jamaica. White is currently a Senior Supervisor in the Operations Department. His job entails supervising response teams that react to signals, he also issues them their equipment for duty.

Having been with the company since the beginning, White has seen Hawkeye grow over the years. He remembers the days when there was only one vehicle and the patrol team would be dropped off at the plazas on Constant Spring Road. “I used to do footpatrol, on the Mall Plaza, we were stationed on the plaza and we’d have to walk from store to store and you’ll get a call. For instance you’ll be at Mall Plaza and you get a call way down at the end of Tropical Plaza and

you want to get there within a specific time and you have to do it on foot.” With his job, White knows that he has to be prepared for anything, and that’s one of the aspects he enjoys, the element of the unknown. He says, “sometimes when you get a call, you don’t know what you’re going into and you go there and whatever situation is, you have to deal with and have a successful outcome. I think that was the most interesting part.” As Hawkeye has grown over the years, so too has White, both professionally and personally. He worked his way up to being a Senior Supervisor and he also began his family while working at Hawkeye. White has been able to educate his two daughters through high school and on to University so far. He feels that the company has played a huge part in helping him to achieve this.

Branch Feature: Montego

The Hawk ezine

Five years after Hawkeye started operations, they opened their Montego Bay branch, catering to clients in and around Montego Bay going as far as Rhyne Park, Great River, Anchovy and Irwin. From day one their services were subscribed to and some of their clients have remained with them for the 20 years they have been around. Hawkeye, Montego Bay offers the same services that the Kingston branch has and of course the service remains the same. Excellence is their standard and that doesn’t changed based on location. While the level of service is the same the security landscape however is a little different. Manager of the Montego Bay branch, Stevo Chin, has held his position for the last 15 years, he explains how the landscape differs, “it is a little different from Kingston as we do not have a lot of large corporate clients. The security industry here is not as regulated and you find a lot of companies opening overnight without the proper infrastructure.” Stevo loves his job as Manager, insisting that he has no regrets and he doesn’t consider what he does as work. He manages a team of 52 people; 30 in Operations (Armed Response), 15 in the Technical Department and 7 in Sales and Admin.

Bay

His challenge lies in keeping the team motivated and ensuring that they practice the core values and maintain the vision of the company, “Protection is our goal and excellence is our standard”. Hawkeye while their focus is their customers the passion for safety and security they have is evident regardless. Recently a team was patrolling and came across a young victim of a robbery who had been stabbed and left for dead. “Our team was patrolling and spotted a gathering and investigated, and without hesitation rushed him to the hospital where he had emergency surgery that saved his life” said Stevo. Some time later he returned with his mother to thank the team. Hawkeye clients subscribe to the Hawkeye Advantage, this means that they feel like a part of the family. Stevo recounted two recent recommendations from clients and said, “We has just assisted his wife and he called to say thanks. He said, ‘he doesn’t feel like he is a customer he feels like he is a family member.’ Another customer said to me that whenever the team responds to his home, he gets the feeling that it is their own home they are responding to. It’s the Hawkeye wayonce you join, you are family.”
