Five Fun

Party Tips

by Kandice Moncrieffe

1

Have a swagged-out, sexy outfit from head to toe for the party and make sure you’re fresh (pun intended). Remember you’ll be dancing and moving about for over four hours. Always try to look your best when you go out, while still being comfortable so you’re able to totally let go and have a great time. Nobody wants to be worrying about an outfit at a party, so dress appropriately.

2 3 4

If you’re over 18 years old and legally allowed to drink alcohol, ensure that you drink responsibly. Know your limit and always have a designated driver to carry you home, to ensure your safety if you got a little carried away.

5

HAVE FUN! Whether you’re just a person who drinks all night and doesn’t dance, or you’re a dancer that goes wild on the dancefloor, have fun in your own way! I’m sure you don’t want to spend your money and not have fun, even if the party doesn’t have a good vibe, try to build the vibe with your friends and be the life of the party.

Ensure you have a definite way to get home. Don’t just assume that a neighbour or a friend will be your transportation. Call ahead of time and ask if you can get a ride home. Nobody wants to be stranded on the road at 3 o’ clock in the morning.

When you get to the venue, based on your preference, find a good spot to stand up and chill with your friends. Some persons like staying closer to the bar, but hey, to each his own. If you’re not a dancer leave the floor open for persons who genuinely want to dance.

Royanne DeSilva Angel of Love

by Ava Gardner

W

hen changes happen, people often tend to fail to recognize those individuals who worked towards invoking those changes. Royanne DeSilva is one of those individuals creating change in our society. The 17-year old Glenmuir High School Economics student has dedicated her life to giving back, working with the charity Angels of Love Jamaica, which helps to keep critically ill children alive. She also participates in numerous outreach programs with her school and church. After talking with Royanne for hours recently at the Wyndam Hotel in New Kingston, I was able to get a good insight into this young lady’s authenticity. She is a very honest, positive, funny, engaging, unique but relatable person determined to make an impact on her country. She has been doing charity work since she was ‘knee high’. Even the word ‘charities’ excites her. Her earliest involvement was through her church’s youth fellowship, which she’s currently the president of, and the Belair High School Key Club in Mandeville. Angels of Love Jamaica is one of Royanne’s top priorities. Her best experience was in December of 2010, where she was the playwright and director of a Christmas Production which raised J$50,000 for the non-profit organization. “I put so much sweat and tears into the production, so seeing it become a reality was amazing,” she said. Royanne also recalled her worst experience there: On April 7 this year, she purchased a birthday gift for one of the Angels of Love beneficiaries, who was to turn seven on the 10th. However, on her way home from the gift store, Royanne received an email that the child had died. She recalled being stunned and crying. “I work with critically ill children, so I know that death is always a possibility, but it really hit me that time how fragile life is,” she commented. Royanne has also learned how important it is ‘live it up’ because people die every second. Charity work opened her eyes to reality and to what was happening in the larger society. On the bright side, she described her voluntary work as something that gives her an indescribable feeling which arises whenever she knows that she has positively impacted someone’s life, and this motivates her.

Royanne DeSilva Angel of Love She stated that voluntary work is a prime example of how to love someone and that, in order to be happy, one must love and be loved. Royanne is honoured that she has had opportunities to do so. Besides charity work, Royanne enjoys socializing, engaging in conversation with just about anybody. She also enjoys drawing and admits to being extremely feminine, playing dress-up almost every night and having a blast. Her summer plans include going out with friends, shopping for college and competing in the Miss Teen World (Jamaica) pageant – along with her charity work, of course. “I have always been in love with the whole concept of pageants, especially being a beauty with a purpose, so when my friend Joel told me about the competition, I could not let the opportunity pass me by,” she said. When asked what she’d do if she won, she joked, “Scream! I was telling my friends that I need to practice how to faint with a smile on my face in case anyone takes pictures.” As an ambassador for Jamaica, Royanne would educate the world on the many wonders of her country to attract investors and tourists, which would boost Jamaica’s economy. Secondly, she’d want to be an advocate for teens worldwide, especially on the issue of HIV/AIDS. The HIV/AIDS pandemic affects children, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean, so she’d want to work with the World Health Organization (WHO) to again maximize the life span of children worldwide. Ultimately, Royanne wants to intervene in all aspects of society where she can make a positive impact. She embodies the famous quote to “be the change we wish to see in the world.” Being charitable is very important to her because she believes that in order to be blessed, one must first be a blessing in other people’s lives. “Many persons view it as abnormal to be charitable, but I find it abnormal not to be,” she said. Royanne encourages her peers to give back and is impressed with the influx of teens who contact her every day wanting to join The Angels of Love Jamaica organization. She doesn’t think that teens refuse to give back; they just need to look for the opportunities and grasp them wholeheartedly.

Good Mood Food by Ava Gardner

E

ven if you burn water or happen to be Cordon Bleucertified, here are some innovative and savoury recipes that are easy to prepare whenever you’ve get the munchies:

Breakfast: Fruit Pizza

People don’t normally eat pizza for breakfast, but a fruit pizza is perfectly suitable. This will give you a good serving of carbohydrates and vitamins to start your day. All you need is a cookie dough crust, a container of cream cheese and an assortment of your favourite fruits. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and bake cookie dough crust until light brown. In a bowl, mix together cream cheese with a 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla and spread over baked cooled crust. Top with your fruits.

Dinner: Breaded Macaroni & Cheese Casserole with Sausage

This is the ultimate comfort food. To make this savoury dish you’ll need: a pack of your favourite type of sausage, elbow macaroni and cheese, milk, grated cheese and breadcrumbs. Cook sausages and cut into penny sizes. Secondly, cook the macaroni and cheese according to the instructions on the box. In a pot, melt the cheese in a proportionate amount of milk to make the sauce. Then, mix everything together and pour into a large oven dish and sprinkle the top with bread crumbs and bake for one hour at 300 degrees.

Dessert: Rainbow Cake

Lunch: Deluxe Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Salute the protein lovers and take a grilled cheese sandwich to the next level! The recipe is basically the same as the traditional sandwich, you’ll just need pieces of your favoruite meats. Some meats that go well together are chicken, turkey and bacon. Leftovers are perfect for this recipe. Prepare the sandwich as you normally would by toasting and buttering the bread and melting cheese in between. However, at different stages of the sandwich just insert your favourite meats. Very tasty!

This colourful recipe will be irresistible. To make a rainbow cake you’ll need: white cake mix, the ingredients listed on the cake mix box, food colouring, baking pans and non-stick baking spray. Cake icing is optional. After following the directions on the box, separate the batter evenly into bowls. The number of bowls you’ll use depends on the array of food colouring you have. For example, add red to one bowl; green to another bowl; blue to another bowl; yellow to another; and to make orange, add red and yellow to another bowl. Ensure that you mix each colour separately with different spoons. Spray the baking pans with the non-stick baking spray and pour in the mixtures according to the color sequence you desire. Do not mix or touch the batter once you’ve poured into the baking tins or the outcome will not look like a rainbow. teen spirit eZine

Finding Your

E

Perfect Swimsuit by Francine Derby

very girl falls into one of five basic body shape categories. They all have their pros and cons, but with the right type of swimsuit, every girl can look great as she struts down the shoreline this summer. Find out which body shape category you fall under and learn how to work it so you always look your absolute best.

Apple-shaped

Apple-shaped girls are proportioned in such a way that they carry their weight around their mid sections and are without a well-defined waist. They usually have full breasts and fabulous legs and should work to accentuate these, since they are their best assets. They may have broader shoulders and upper arms with thinner hips and thighs and a flatter rear end than most. Their challenge is concealing their midsections and bringing out the best in their breasts and legs. If you’re apple-shaped… Your goal will be to have a slimmer top and a more defined waist. You can do this by accenting and showing off your great legs and thighs while giving the appearance of a more balanced top. Try a swimsuit that cuts straight across the top or a bandeau-style with halter strings for a minimizing effect. Aim for suits that have extra breast support and tummy control.

Pear-shaped

Pear-shaped girls are shaped like triangles. They are bottom heavy so their hips are quite wide in comparison to their breasts. They tend to have fairly flat stomachs and a well-defined waist. Their challenge is balancing out their shape by making their breasts appear larger and their hips appear narrower. If you’re pear-shaped… To achieve balance, mix and match bikinis are great for you. Choose a patterned top, or a top with ruffles to draw attention to your top half. Pair that with a solid bottom to draw attention away from your bottom half.

Strawberry-shaped

The strawberry is the inverse of the pear. Strawberry-shaped girls have a figure that’s bigger up top than on their bottom halves. They also tend to have flat stomachs and a great waist-

line. They may have broad shoulders and fuller breasts, while their hips are very slender. Their challenge is balancing out their shape by making their hips appear wider and their top halves narrower. If you’re strawberry-shaped… Since you want to balance out your figure, mix and match bikinis are perfect for you. Try making the top as plain as possible – solid colours with no embellishments – and making the bottom patterned. This will draw attention away from your top half for a more balanced appearance.

Hourglass-shaped

Hourglass-shaped gals are blessed with the classic ‘Coca Cola bottle’ shape. Their breasts and hips are equally full, with a relatively small waist. These girls have very few challenges, but should work on getting the best suit to show off their enviable shape. If you’re hourglass-shaped… Your body is perfect for a two piece swimsuit, even if you have a fuller figure. Hourglass-shaped girls can take many risks with their swimsuits since anything they wear is bound to accentuate their figure. Try going for bikinis with bandeau tops or monokinis that come far in at the middle – these will take full advantage of your great figure.

Rectangle-shaped

Rectangle-shaped girls are fairly straight and their top and bottom halves are just about equal with their midsection. They have nothing to minimize like the other shapes, but they might want to create some curves. This can be easily achieved with the right suit. If you’re rectangle-shaped… Women with a straighter figure don’t have much to hide. However, they may want to create a more curvaceous appearance. Do this by choosing monokinis with a form fitting waist or a one piece that is darker around the middle. This will create the illusion of a smaller waist. Wearing two pieces with boy shorts bottoms can make your lower half appear wider. Also consider swimsuits with a soft cup bra.

Meeting

The Parents by Francine Derby

M

eeting your significant other’s parents for the first time can be a nerve- wracking experience. You’re probably worried about what their first impressions of you will be and whether or not they’ll approve of you. It’s extremely important to make a good first impression, as a bad one could cause tension or problems in the future, especially if you plan on getting more serious with your special someone. It’s a good idea to find out what kind of people your partner’s parents are before you meet them. That way, you’ll have an idea of what to expect and how to behave. Here are a few things to consider when meeting the parents for the very first time:

Hug or Handshake?

for an older person to ask you about details of your life, it may be perceived as intrusive if you ask an older too many questions.

Don’t Show Off

If you have something which the parents may find unacceptable, such as a piercing, tattoo or a risqué item of your wardrobe, it’s better to keep it concealed - at least for the first meeting. You don’t want immediately put them off. If you have any visible piercings, it’s best to take them out. Wear clothes that will cover tattoos if you have any. Girls should refrain from wearing tight, revealing clothes which their boyfriend’s parents could be opposed to.

Manners are a Must

If you’re sitting, you should stand to greet them. Smile, say hello and put out your hand for them to shake. A hug may be too forward for a first meeting and they may be taken aback. If you offer a handshake, they can easily decline and ask for a hug instead, if they so choose.

It’s a given that you should be polite and respectful, since you probably want them to like you. Older people love polite, helpful young people, so don’t forget your social graces. If you’re in a situation where you can help with something - preparing for dinner, cleaning up or carrying a heavy box - you should definitely offer to help. Even if they decline, they’ll appreciate your kindness.

Awkward Silences Are Normal

Things Take Time

For a first meeting, most of the conversation is likely to be small talk, which can result in a few lulls. Don’t be worried if there are some awkward silences. Remember, the parents are probably as nervous about meeting you as you are about meeting them. There might be moments where nobody knows what to say. Be careful how you choose to fill those awkward silences, though. While it’s acceptable

Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

PG-13

by Alana Gardner

D

If your first meeting with your significant other’s parents didn’t go as planned, don’t be discouraged. It’s normal for them to be critical of you and they might not take to you immediately. Prove yourself in subsequent meetings and they’ll eventually start to warm up to you. If you and your partner plan to be together long term, then you’ll have a lot of time to prove yourself to the parents.

venture in which he doesn’t know who to fear more, Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise, only this time in digital 3D. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an actionpacked tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise. When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected ad-

Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides earns itself full five stars. I have to say that I really enjoyed this movie, even without Orlando Bloom. This film is another immense hit for producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane really added a lot to the film, but of course Johnny Depp absolutely shines in his return to his role as the swashbuckling pirate in the fourth installment in the franchise. All in all, this movie had everything you’d expect from POTC: adventurous, sea creatures, swordfighting and lots of great comedy; but the new cast members keep it feeling fresh and make a must-see.
